I feel very strongly about Yuuta single-handedly deciding to take down kenjaku by himself during the culling game arc, because I have a feeling that this could be the beginning of a very cool cycle/arc of him going from "I have been repeatedly told how dangerous I am" to "I have mastered how dangerous I am" to "I can use how dangerous I am to protect my friends" to "nobody would really be able to stop me if I did" and whether this ends with him over-estimating his abilities and getting destroyed by Kenjaku or Sukuna, or going over the edge and his old friends having to take him down, I would be so here for it.

A small sigh of relief is heaved from his chest upon hearing of Nanami-san and Ijichi-san’s recoveries. After all those months at the school, after Geto-san’s intrusion and the Night Parade, one would imagine they would grow used to the dangers and the risks posed to friends and mentors. Truthfully, Yuuta cannot tell if he’ll ever get used to it. Perhaps it is better he does not. Still, the boy cannot help but look at the more experienced sorcerer and feel a pang of guilt tugging at his heart. Nanami-san has seen many battles, experienced who knows what hardships... will there come a day where, maybe, he will be strong enough to take the burden from his shoulders, and from every sorcerer’s shoulders, who deserves a long, peaceful life? What other purpose could the power bestowed upon him have?
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, Yuuta is far from having reached that stage yet. Hopefully, someday soon. “That’s good to hear.” He nods. “Hopefully there will be no need for reverse cursed technique on this mission.” A few months have passed since Rika’s release now - Yuuta has almost fully regained his old abilities and gotten acquained with the new Rika... but he has learnt better than to walk blindly into a fight. “Let’s handle this quickly so you can enjoy a day off or two.” He adds with a small smile.

zorkaya
It was vital for her not to be kicked out of Japan because of how prevalent the cursed object from her country remained for herself and the balance of the world. Master Tengen, upon meeting her, would utter a name of the curse instead of her own, causing an immediate adverse reaction. Still, it was alright as now she was working with those of Jujutsu Tech as a teacher to exchange her knowledge with others. As it was proven, Sokolova-sensei was far more knowledgeable about fighting techniques than many other teachers (surprisingly for her age). Satoru Gojo’s jokes about her powers didn’t make it less tense between her and other students who didn’t yet know her.
Well, Okkotsu Yuuta’s case was already known to her thanks to the cautious and paranoid higher-ups. Truly, a laughable bunch. They should be proud that this person was a kind-hearted boy, judging by how he reacted to her and how quiet he remained. So docile, she almost wanted to squish his cheeks as if he were her youngest sibling Aleksey.
Tumblr media
“You don’t need to be that nervous! My goodness, what did that rascal Gojo Satoru tell you about me? Chill, chill~ I won’t bite. Heard all about you, but don’t worry. I’m not here to make your life harder.” The woman laughs with a smile, bringing out the friendliest behavior she could without missing a beat. “Oh, that piece of art?” She looks at the motorcycle, her delight immediately becoming even brighter. “Yes, indeed! That’s my precious baby. Well, one of them. I usually use it to drive around since it’s easier than a car if I want to get somewhere.” She hums, pleased that Okkotsu would ask about it. If this were a tv-show, she’d have stars circling around her to signify her delight and pride over this possession.
“Say, Okkotsu,” she pauses. “…-kun, -san? Argh, Japanese mannerisms of speech are so different compared to where I came from,” Zarina sighs, shoulder drooping as if she were embarrassed over such foolish mistakes. All of this was only to create a friendlier image. “Anyways, ever rode on one o’ those?” She points at the motorbike.
No need to be nervous is easier said than done, when you sport one of those white jackets the higher-ups have required him to don. He stands out like a sore thumb amongst his peers, and from what he understands? With Rika by his side, he doesn’t even need the white jacket to be noticed from miles away. Of course he would be nervous. Gojo-sensei barely needed to say anything, really... but perhaps his glorious review was not entirely innocent in the matter.
Sokolova-sensei promises she doesn’t mean to make his life harder, and Yuuta is unable to come up with a better answer than: “Thanks?”. Good job Yuuta. Thankfully, she moves on in a heartbeat; his circled eyes too return to the bike, unable to hide childlike curiosity and a little hint of awe. What sixteen year-old by wouldn’t find a motorbike insanely and inherently cool?
“Ah - Okkotsu-kun is fine!” He offers as a helpful prompt. Japanese honorifics can be confusing for foreigners, he supposes (not that he has much experience with foreigners; actually, one could argue he has more experience of cursed pandas than of foreigners) (his life is completely normal, can you tell?). His shoulders start to relax, taken in and convinced by the woman’s amicable demeanour. What a nice change from some of the people here who still cast him sideway glances... he wonders, silently, ow Rika’s aura may be affecting her. Panda-kun had told him it was pretty damn suffocating - how might it feel to a sorcerer of her standing?
Tumblr media
The boy shakes his head. “No, never. My parents used to have a car, when I was living with them.” ... which hasn’t been the case in even longer than he has been at the school. That is a story for another time. “It’s really cool, though. There aren’t that many of them back in Sendai - how long have you had it? Must be really convenient when you’re going on missions.” More convenient than coordinating with poor Ijichi-san anyway.

@fuyumine whispers:  ❝  i think the whole idea of ‘finding yourself’ is kind of bullshit.  we are what we chose to be.  we make ourselves.   ❞ ( maki / @fuyumine) (conversational starters)
“Haha - how very you, Maki-san.” There is no malice or tease in his words, borne by a light and airy chuckle; how very her, he thinks again, this time to himself, a fondness in his chest as they sit together by the training field. Their respective weapons rest in the grass a few feet from them, replaced in their hands by two cans of iced tea as self-granted reward for all their efforts. He has missed this, Yuuta muses, inwards. He has been travelling more and more, regaining his special grade  week after week, mission after mission - some of which would take him to the other side of the country or even abroad.
He has missed this; being on those training grounds, sparring with the best swordswoman he knows, trading thoughts afterwards as tried muscles recover.
Tumblr media
Yuuta hums and looks to the sky - a murder of crows flies over their heads, heading towards the city beyond the trees. “I suppose you and I are good examples of that, aren’t we.” He muses; before looking back at her with a smile. “Especially you, Maki-san. I still don’t know how you do it, but - your resolve is amazing. I’ve always admired you for that, you know?” Fanboy, he can hear Panda’s voice murmuring at the back of his mind. Yeah, well. She is amazing. Like it or not, it takes a particular kind of soul to have the strength to defy everything her world has been built upon. He had never been able to do that... until she had pulled him from the pits of despair he had so complacently sunken into.
Of course Maki-san is one of the most amazing people he’s ever met.

“Nanami-san.” The boy jumps from his seat on the pavement stairs by the school gates onto his feet; at the ready, his katana strapped to his shoulder, black case against the white fabric of his shirt. The uniform of problem children, he had been told - a way of singling him out, should something, in his vicinity, somehow go wrong (it’s easier to point fingers if you can visually spot the alleged culprit, right?). “I’m ready. We should get going.” Fortunately, Nanami-san has never been one to actually single him out for the colour of his shirt.
Tumblr media
There once was a time when Yuuta would look at Nanami, and hold his breath, and fear that he would do something that would earn him a stern glare and a sliced arm (tripping in his own feet / being impolite / accidentally releasing Rika??). Nowadays, thankfully? Yuuta’s posture has noticeably relaxed; and he doesn’t hold his breath anymore. He knows he doesn’t have to. “Gojo-sensei said your last mission was a difficult one.” Then again, with Gojo-sensei, you never quite know when he tells the truth and when a complete fabrication may come out of his mouth! “I’m glad you seem okay.”

so this page always got me confused ever since it got published, because?? yuuta was already established as a descendent of sugawara no michizane (like gojo), who are the fujiwara where are they coming from why are they even being mentioned? so i did some digging, and surprise surprise! connections! fun facts galore!
- sugawara no michizane was a poet and politician of the heian era, who eventually got into conflict with the rising fujiwara clan, who took over as emperors of japan. this led to sugawara no michizane’s slow demise from court and eventual banishment - he died in exile. - according to wikipedia, sugawara no michizane did indeed become a vengeful spirit who unleashed droughts, floods and storms, and plagued and killed the emperor’s (again, a fujiwara) sons. - to appease him, the fujiwara imperial clan built a shrine dedicated to him, restored his title, honour, and struck his exile from official records. several decades later, sugawara no michizane’s spirit was finally appeased, and he turned from vengeful spirit into a deified being (kami): tenjin, god of sky, storms, and as most commonly known today, god of scholarship. - apparently, somewhere down the line, the sugawara and the fujiwara bloodlines were united by marriage, so yuuta could indeed be a descendent of both clans.  - either that, or uro mistakes him for a member of the clan who actually plotted the exile of his real ancestor.  - either way, it’s fun and i’m praying these tidbits of information will eventually lead somewhere.

i’m also stealing from the film’s opening scenes and saying that for his first few weeks/months at the school, Yuuta lived on the outskirts of the premices, instead of the shared dorm with the other students. The higher-ups confined him to a repurposed old temple, only inhabited by Yuuta and a few members of staff running the place - there is no other student there, and every day after training, Yuuta would have to walk twenty minutes across the massive school property to get back to what was essentially his temporary cage. It was a precautionary measure until Gojo and other staff members felt confident enough that he could be let loose on campus without posing (too much) of a threat to the other students.

@zorkaya whispers:  ❝   did you come by for a reason or did you just want some company?    (conversational starters)
Your cursed energy perception sucks, Yuuta. He remembers Panda-kun pointing it out before; and he hates to admit it, but he supposs his friend kinda sorta has a point. Else, there is no way (probably??) he would have missed on the impressive aura that materialised behind him; no way he would not have noticed his teacher walking up behind him unannounced. Predictably, Yuuta jolts and clutches the strap of the katana around his shoulder - a child caught red-handed doing... well, nothing reprehensible, but Yuuta tends to assume he did something wrong on principle. “Ah! Sokolova-sensei...”
There are many intimidating terrifying individuals, in the jujutsu world, as he has come to learn over the past few months. Zarina Sokolova is, very undoubtedly, one of them (be careful around her, Yuuta-kun - she might turn you into a popsicle in the blink of an eye if you piss her off! Gojo-sensei had warned him) (Gojo-sensei’s warnings were almost never useful, but this one, he’ll chose to trust).
Tumblr media
But - Zarina Sokolova is a teacher at Jujutsu Tech (right??), so... surely, existing within the same space should be fine.
Well. Unless she is one of these higher-ranked sorcerers who deemed his existence a liability. Yuuta does not forget that there are more people like this than there are Gojo-senseis. “Ah, no - I mean, I was just taking a walk...” He answers at last. The corridors of the temple he is still confined to at the moment in lieu of school dorms can get lonely and suffocating. Grey eyes drift back to the object that caught his attention: a motorbike he doesn’t remember seeing before. “And I found this. Is it yours, sensei?”

Comparing the JJK 0 film and the prequel manga, the manga establishes that Yuuta has to be taken in because he’s (obviously) highly dangerous, but doesn’t explain how/why besides the locker incident, and I’m glad the film picks up on details gege confirmed in interviews; specifically that after the locker incident, some sorcerers were sent to capture Yuuta, and Rika killed them all - leading to Gojo being asked to do it.
The film also reveals how many sorcerers went after Yuuta and got killed in the process: three grade 2 sorcerers, and one grade 1 sorcerer, meaning that by the age of 16 and with no awareness of what curses even were, Rika and Yuuta had already (voluntarily and involuntarily) killed the equivalent of three Inumaki and one Nanami.

@fuyumine whispers:  “   we  are  below  rock  bottom  right  now .   we’re ,  like ,  in  hell .   ” ( maki / @fuyumine )   (sticky situations starters)
“You know, I thought we would never have to face anything worse than Geto-san and his night parade.” Yuuta echoes, a pensive hum rumbling in his chest. There were things they knew back then, and there are things they know now - there were opponents they defeated then (narrowly, clinging to victory by the tip of their nails) and there are opponents that seem too formidable now. When Yuuta got wind of the events unfolding in Japan and jumped onto that plane, he had no idea just how badly things had truly spiralled.
Principal Yaga is gone. Nanami-san is gone. Gojo-sensei is trapped in the prison realm. The Kyôto students are nowhere to be contacted, Panda-kun has all but vanished, and Inumaki-kun is slipping in and out of limbo with an arm torn off that even Yuuta’s reverse cursed technique was too late to save. And next to him, sitting with her back up against a wall in this makeshift hideout their allies have established, Maki-san looks like she has been through hell and back, too.
No, not to hell and back. She’s right: they are still in hell, right here, right now, in this Culling Game.
Tumblr media
“I was pretty naive, huh.” He mutters. His head rolls back against the wall behind them, and he casts a glance towards his companion - a familiar instinct telling him to expect retaliation. Maki-san has never let anyone or anything bring her combative spirit down. Even now, as they sit and talk of hell; he half expects her to yank him by the collar of his shirt and ask him if he’s chickening out. He has always admired her for that; so, for once? Maybe he’ll surprise her. “We have to fight back. Everyone is exhausted, but you and I - we have what it takes, don’t we?”
