Seventeen years and two days ago, my friend Eric Ng was riding his bike when he was hit and killed by a drunk driver. Rest in peace, Eric.

Ten years!
Ten years ago today I started the Cops in Bike Lanes project as a Tumblr site. I expected it to be my way of screaming some frustration into the void of the internet, nothing more. I was pleasantly surprised when it began to get traction, and guest submissions, and press, and followers. I'm still a bit surprised and very, very grateful. Thank you to everyone who has contributed, shared, or just viewed on any channel.

I know I haven't been posting much for the past few years. Party that's because work and life got in the way, but the main reason is that I moved out of New York City to be closer to my family out West. Nowadays I don't bike to get around nearly as often, and when I do there aren't many bike lanes in which police officers can park. I am still taking submissions, though, so if you have pictures to send in please do so. I will get around to posting them at some point! This project is on hiatus but is not dead.
Ride safe.

Sixteen years.
My friend Eric Ng was killed 16 years ago today by a drunk driver while riding his bike on the Hudson River Greenway.
This summer I rode 465 miles across the state of Iowa, along with about 15,000 other people.  It’s an annual group ride called RAGBRAI, and it was an absolute blast.  I sent out a mass invite to a bunch of friends and a few did come along....I can’t help but wonder if Eric would’ve come, had he still been alive.  I feel like there’s a decent chance he would have.  I wish he could have.
Requiescat in pace, Eric.

Nine years!  (Kinda...)
This project first started nine years ago today with a Tumblr post that I figured maybe a dozen people would see.  Somehow it got a bit of traction with the cycling community, especially in NYC, and I was soon getting user submissions regularly.  Sadly, I’ve been negligent in keeping up with it in recent years, but if you send in a picture I will post it eventually.
In addition to this Tumblr, you can view Cops in Bike Lanes on these channels:
Twitter: https://twitter.com/copsinbikelanes
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/copsinbikelanes/
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/copsinbikelanes
Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/CopsInBikeLanes/
Thanks to everyone who has contributed, shared, or viewed any of these.  This may have been lying dormant, but it’s not dead.
Ride safe.

Wow.  It was hard enough to believe when it had been ten years.

Dean Street at Washington Ave, Brooklyn.  January 22.  Submitted by Laura:
“I was riding with my 7 year-old son on the back of our cargo bike and had to cut into rush hour traffic to get around the officer idling in his car.  Lots of cars turning onto Dean from Washington so waiting for the light wasn’t even really an option. There are generally cars or trucks parked in that bike lane on every block from Underhill to Kingston  while I take my kid home from school.  Great to see that beyond not ticketing any of them, the NYPD is setting the example.”

March 10.  Santa Cruz, CA.  Submitted by Phil, who says:
“After biking by, when I calmly and politely asked the officer about it, he said that cop cars are exempt so that he can park anywhere he pleases. He asked if I wanted to know why he was parked there. When I said yes please he replied 'well too bad, I'm not going to tell you'. Obviously no apology or understanding as for why it may be dangerous for me or any other cyclist.”

Seven years!
Yesterday marked seven years of this site.  It’s been a weird year to say the least, but as always I’m eternally grateful for everyone who has contributed, liked, shared, and/or written about it.  Thank you all.
The project remains semi-active, despite an egregious lack of activity (especially here on Tumblr) that may suggest otherwise.  Keep sending pictures in and I’ll eventually get them posted on some medium or another.

Six years!
Yesterday marked six years of this project. Thanks to all who have contributed, followed, shared, liked, etc. It really means a lot to me that people have responded, and it helps inspire me to keep it going (albeit sporadically). But instead of a birthday cake, I want to share a death day video.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately - okay, always, not just lately...but even more than usual since the memorial ride for Jose Alzorriz last month. I hope it's never me. I hope it's never anyone. But if it is, let's make sure that the headlines are right. Don't we owe at least that small kindness to the dead?
