What do you do if your school application is rejected
Summer starts full-time school this September.  My little princess is going to a big school.
She already attends nursery every morning at the school in which I would like her to go to Reception, the same school Jacob goes to. However, this school is out of our catchment area (only by a few meters), so there is a chance that our application will be rejected.
On the application, I only put one school down and chose not to add a 2nd or 3rd choice, because I don't want her to go to any other school, not when this is where her friends are and where Jacob goes to school.  I know that doesn't guarantee anything, but I don't see any point as I will simply appeal if our application is rejected.
So what do you do if your application is rejected? You can read this helpful guest post on the Schools Improvement website written by Simpson Millar law firm "How to deal with the appeal process" for some great advice.  Simpson Millar law firm describes the appeals process for parents whose children do not get an offer at their first choice school.  What do you do, what's the process and how best to appeal it?
We were in that position 2 years ago, Jacob's application was rejected and we appealed, and he finally got into the school he wanted. But it was an upsetting process, a long process and Jacob had to attend a different school for a short period, away from where his friends were. After being on the waitlist we finally heard the good news and Jacob was transferred to the school he wanted - the school where he went to nursery, and where all his friends were.  And, I have everything crossed, hoping that the application is successful for Summer and that she doesn't have to go through the same. We will find out soon.

My Battle with Chronic Illness: The Power of Gratitude
Gratitude
It's easy to feel overwhelmed and defeated when facing life's challenges, especially when you suffer from chronic illnesses like ME/CFS, and chronic pain, but have you considered the power of gratitude? Well, in my journey with chronic illness, I've found it to be immensely helpful in practising—gratitude.
Throughout my life, I have always made a conscious effort to practice gratitude. I firmly believe that being grateful for the people and things in my life is essential for my overall happiness and well-being. I am grateful for my amazing husband, my wonderful children, my mum, my home, my life-long best friend; as well as everything else that positively touches my life. It’s a tool I’ve used throughout my life, and I’ve continued the practice of gratitude with my chronic illness journey; the power of gratitude has shown me that it consistently works wonders. It helps.
I have always felt that it is crucial never to lose sight of the things I am thankful for, especially when life throws curveballs my way.
When I was diagnosed with a chronic illness it changed my perspective on gratitude. My thought process shifted, and I began focusing on being grateful for things that I might have taken for granted before, such as my health, the ability to the everyday activities, even the most mundane/smallest of activities, and especially the support of my loved ones during difficult times.
Gratitude has helped me reaffirm the importance of cherishing what I have and not taking anything for granted. It has helped me maintain a balanced and positive outlook on life despite the challenges I face.
Gratitude as a Resilience Tool
Why Gratitude Matters in Chronic Illness Management
When you're living with chronic illnesses, such as MECFS, focusing on gratitude might seem counterintuitive. Yet, acknowledging the good in my life can significantly impact my mental and emotional well-being. Gratitude diverts attention from the pain and fatigue to the aspects of life that bring joy and satisfaction, however small. It's about finding value in the every day—a conversation with a friend, a comfortable moment, or a personal achievement. Embracing gratitude can help build mental resilience, providing a buffer against the depression and anxiety that often accompany chronic illnesses. By reinforcing a positive mindset, we can cultivate a more hopeful outlook on life, which is crucial for managing long-term health conditions like MECFS.
Grateful for my Support System
I am incredibly grateful for my family and friends, especially during the challenging times I face with my chronic illness. Their unwavering support and understanding have been a source of immense comfort and strength for me. My family members have been my pillars of strength, accompanying me to countless medical appointments, ensuring I adhere to my treatment plan, and providing emotional support when I feel overwhelmed. Similarly, my friends have consistently shown their support through their kind words, encouraging gestures, and simply being present to lift my spirits when I'm feeling low.
Knowing that I have such a strong support system makes dealing with my chronic illness much more bearable, and I am truly blessed to have them in my life.
Transform Perspective
Gratitude has not only helped me cope with my chronic illness, but it has also transformed my perspective on life. Instead of focusing on what's going wrong or what's missing, gratitude allows me to appreciate what's going right and what I already have. It creates a sense of emotional "white space" in my mind, giving me a moment to breathe and refocus amidst the constant health concerns. One personal step that stands out is when I started jotting down things that made me happy despite the pain, and I began to experience unexpected moments of joy. Gratitude truly has the power to uplift me during the toughest of times.
Gratitude has the ability to shift perspective and bring about a sense of peace and contentment, even in the midst of challenging circumstances. It allows me to focus on the positive aspects of my life and appreciate the small moments of joy that may otherwise go unnoticed. By cultivating a grateful mindset, I can find solace and strength in the midst of adversity, knowing that there is always something to be thankful for.
Final thoughts
So, whether you're battling chronic illness or simply navigating through life's general ups and downs, don't underestimate the power of gratitude. It can be our emotional cushion during tough times, reminding us of the good that still exists around us even when it may seem hidden.

Schleich Bayala Mermaid
I have yet to be disappointed in the Schleich products.
They are beautifully made, extremely detailed, vibrant colours and the sets are always designed so the individual pieces stay together without being stuck together, allowing you to play more interactively with them. Schleich encourages positively creative and imaginative play.
And, with Schleich you can easily mix and match with the other sets from the range, you can easily collect and build a mermaid fantasy world by adding other sets from the Bayala range.
Summer is really into her mermaids at the moment, she loves the underworld magically theme and she adores her new Schleich Bayala Mermaid set. The mermaid's arm moves and she can hold either the seaweed or the violin. The turtle is super cute.
Not only are they lovely toys to play with, but they look great when displayed, and they are reasonably sturdy as long as they are treated with care. Schleich toys will last a lifetime and be played with for years; they are ideal for passing down from generation to generation.
Schleich's Bayala collection includes various mermaid figurines and sets as well as other fable creatures.

Clangers Squeeze and Whistle Plush
The Clangers first made their appearance on our screens back in the late 60s, a cute little family that lived on the moon, and they communicate only in whistle. Their diet was different, being that they lived on the moon, they ate green soup which was supplied by the Soup Dragon and blue string pudding.
Clangers is a true British show which is iconic and means a lot to that generation. They've made a successful return this year and now have a lovely range of soft toys to complement the new series.
The lovely people from Character sent us this adorable Squeeze and Whistle Plush Clanger for review. And, in festive spirit Character they sent it wrapped up in christmas paper, and Summer opened it excitedly.
Tiny Clanger is not only super cute, he is also soft and super cuddly - you squeeze his tummy and he whistles just like on the show.  What I really like and appreciate about this cuddly little plush is, just like on the original show Tiny Clanger is made from knitted material and he wears his little waistcoat.
With Christmas around the corner this Clangers Squeeze and Whistle Plush would make a lovely gift for any child, or Clanger fan.
Another great thing about Clangers this Christmas is that from 6th December until Christmas Eve, Toys ‘R’ Us will have them all at 30 % off!

How to Turn an Old Book into a Storage Box
I have wanted to make a keepsake box out of one of my old books for a while now. The idea of upcycling a beloved book into something practical and sentimental has been tugging at my heart. There's a particular book that is worn from multiple readings, its pages scrunched and fragile. Rather than letting it collect dust on the shelf, transforming it into a keepsake box feels like a fitting way to honour its role in shaping my love for books. I envision carefully cutting out a compartment within its pages, a secret space to store trinkets and mementos that hold special memories.
This project not only allows me to give new life to a cherished book but also serves as a constant reminder of the power of literature in sparking creativity and nostalgia.
Materials needed:
1-metre fabric – Hatti Raspberry
1 old hardback book
A paintbrush
Multi-purpose glue
A ruler and pencil
Scissors
Stanly knife
First I painted the back book cover and spine with glue and covered them with fabric. I then turned the book over, positioned it on the fabric, pressed down, turned it over so the back was now facing me, and smoothed it out with my hand. And again I did the same for the front cover and then the inside cover. Cutting two slits on each side of the spine, and using a butter knife I tucked the fabric into the spine - both ends.
I then closed the book and painted all three sides of the pages with glue. Make sure to coat them thoroughly. I then placed a heavy iron (turned off) on top of the book and let it sit and dry for about 12 hours.
Now that the pages are all glued together, I started cutting out the middle of the pages. First, I measured out the size and shape of the compartment I wanted, then carefully I started slicing around the marked shape with a Stanly knife. I went deep enough to place some jewellery bits in, but you can go deeper if you so wish. And that is finished - you can see my pictures below.
Fabric-covered books (with a secret hidden compartment) are pretty, cheap decor pieces that will look beautiful in the bookcase, or on a shelf - and you get to hide some bits and bobs.

Navigating Menopausal Hair Loss: How Hair Growth Products Can Help
Experiencing hair loss during menopause can be a challenging and disheartening aspect of this stage in life. However, there is hope in the form of hair growth products specifically designed to address this issue. With a focus on promoting healthy hair regrowth and combating the effects of hormonal changes, products like the Hair Growth Set for Unisex from Luxuriant168 aim to provide a solution for individuals navigating menopausal hair loss.
The Science behind Menopausal Hair Loss
Menopause brings about significant hormonal shifts that can lead to hair loss. Estrogen and progesterone levels, which support hair growth, decrease sharply, while androgens, which can shrink hair follicles, may remain constant or even increase. This imbalance often results in hair thinning and loss, primarily affecting the top and sides of the scalp. Additionally, other factors like stress, nutritional changes, and metabolic speed alterations during menopause can exacerbate hair thinning. Understanding this science is crucial because it informs the development of hair growth products. These products aim to nurture the scalp, strengthen hair follicles, and sometimes even stimulate hormonal balance, providing a targeted approach to countering the specific type of hair loss that menopause causes.
Personal Experience with Hair Thinning
Dealing with hair thinning during menopause is a journey I know all too well. It started with more strands than usual in the brush, then a noticeable change in volume and texture. It was a silent struggle at first—one that felt uniquely mine and somewhat vain to worry about given the other health changes I was experiencing. But hair is so closely tied to identity and self-perception that its loss can feel deeply personal. I've learned that opening up about these experiences can be both validating and helpful. It's not just about vanity; it's about the way we see ourselves and how we cope with change. By sharing our stories, we build a support system and discover that we're not alone in our challenges. Through this connection, we often find new solutions and ways to manage our health.
Ingredients that Promote Hair Growth
Hair growth products come packed with ingredients that target the root causes of menopausal hair loss. Look for products containing biotin, a vitamin that plays a key role in hair health and can help thicken hair and stimulate growth. Another powerful ingredient is minoxidil, which can boost hair follicle activity and protein production. Natural extracts like saw palmetto may also prevent hair loss by blocking hormonal effects. Then there are essential nutrients like zinc and iron, which are crucial for hair follicle repair and growth. When combined, these ingredients can significantly improve the health and appearance of thinning hair. It's important to choose products tailored for hormonal hair loss, as they are specifically formulated to counteract the unique challenges of menopausal hair thinning.
Lifestyle Changes for Better Hair Health
If you are considering hair growth products, its also important to consider making certain lifestyle changes which can greatly improve hair health during menopause. First, a well-balanced diet rich in protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins can provide the necessary nutrients for healthy hair growth. Foods like fish, nuts, and leafy greens are especially beneficial. Also, staying hydrated is essential as it supports the health of hair follicles.
Reducing stress through activities such as yoga, meditation, or regular exercise can also have a positive impact. Stress is known to exacerbate hair loss, so finding effective coping mechanisms is key. Additionally, avoid harsh hair treatments and styles that pull on the hair and scalp. Gentle hair care, coupled with avoiding high heat styling tools, can prevent further damage. These simple yet effective changes can support the effectiveness of hair growth products and contribute to overall hair health.
Finding Hope and Resilience with the Right Products
Finding the right hair growth products can be a beacon of hope for many dealing with menopausal hair loss. It's not only about the physical aspect of regaining hair but also about restoring confidence and resilience. It can be empowering. It's important to remember that while hair loss can be a common symptom of menopause, it doesn't have to define this chapter of life. With the right products and support, there's a path forward that includes both acceptance of natural changes and celebration of the ability to nurture and improve our health—including the health of our hair.
You can FIND OUT MORE about hair loss on Luxuriant 168 website.

The fill, a combination of microfiber and down, provides the perfect balance of softness and support, incorporating sustainable materials like recycled polyester.
Benefits of using Simba Hybrid Duvet

Another benefit of the duvet is its superior comfort. The soft and supportive fibres offer a luxurious feel, ensuring a comfortable sleep that makes you feel like you're sleeping on a cloud.
Furthermore, the Simba Hybrid Duvet is not only eco-friendly but also a sustainable choice for the environmentally conscious. It is biodegradable, dissolving in about two years in a landfill environment, and is made from recycled PET bottle fibres, aligning with the growing trend towards sustainable materials.
It came in a convenient 100% recycled storage bag, which I used to pack away my old duvet for future use.

Its advanced features, like temperature regulation and the cooling mattress technology, combined with the unbeatable comfort of a hybrid mattress, truly exceeded my expectations.

My Battle with ME: When Fatigue Affects My Vision
My Battle with ME: When Fatigue Affects My Vision
Living with myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME/CFS) has presented me with a variety of challenges, one of the most difficult being the impact on my vision. As with fatigue, a common symptom of ME/CFS, sets in, I often find that my vision becomes blurry or hazy, making it difficult to focus on tasks or even just see clearly. This has been frustrating and sometimes overwhelming, as it adds an extra layer of difficulty to my daily life.
At times, the fatigue from ME/CFS can be so overwhelming that it feels like my eyes are struggling to focus, causing blurred vision or even double vision. This not only makes simple tasks like reading or watching TV difficult, but it can also be quite disorienting and frustrating.
In addition to the physical aspect of my vision being affected by fatigue, a symptom of ME/CFS, I've also noticed that my mental clarity and ability to concentrate on visual tasks are diminished when I'm particularly tired. This can make it hard to process information quickly or make decisions based on visual cues.
The connection between fatigue and vision issues in ME/CFS is not fully understood, but it is believed that the strain of dealing with constant fatigue (mind and body fatigue) can affect the eyes and how they function. Additionally, the brain fog and cognitive difficulties that accompany ME/CFS can further exacerbate vision problems, making it even harder to see clearly.
The Onset of Eye Fatigue
Over time, I’ve noticed a significant deterioration. It's not just the widespread pain and rigidity spasms associated with ME/CFS (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis) - there are many other symptoms. There are days when fatigue overwhelms me so much to the point where my eyes feel unbearably heavy and tired. They start to roll back, pleading for what feels like a shutdown, even at midday –any time of the day.
But, sleeping during daylight hours isn't an option because it disrupts my evening sleep pattern which is critical for my overall health with ME/CFS, further complicating sleep disturbances.
Struggling Against Daytime Naps
This self-set rule of not sleeping during daylight often feels like a huge battle, especially when my body shuts down and my eyes are rolling back. Despite being determined to maintain good sleep health by avoiding daytime naps, sometimes it's just impossible. Sometimes, I find myself succumbing to fatigue (a common symptom of ME/CFS).
No matter how strong-willed I am, my broken body has its own agenda; sometimes I simply have no choice but to sleep, a testament to the relentless fatigue associated with ME/CFS.
Blurred Vision: An Unexpected Impact
Another issue that I've grappled with is blurred vision. Apart from regular eye issues like needing glasses for sight correction, what's concerning now is how rapidly my eyesight seems to get worse, a symptom that's increasingly common with ME/CFS.
To add another layer of complexity, double vision also torments me sporadically, specifically in my right eye accompanied by a deep dull ache - pain almost indescribable in words, highlighting the multifaceted symptoms of ME/CFS.
Post-exertional malaise (PEM), also known as a 'crash’
Post-exertional malaise (PEM) episodes are a debilitating symptom of myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). When I experience a PEM episode (aka a 'crash'), it feels like a sudden crash in my energy level and health, which drastically worsens my symptoms. It can be triggered by even minor physical or mental exertion, such as walking a short distance, having a bath or a brief conversation. During a PEM episode, my sensory functions are significantly affected, including my eyesight, which becomes blurry and difficult to focus. These PEM episodes can last for days or even weeks, leaving me feeling exhausted and unable to participate in daily life.
PEM is a debilitating and long-lasting symptom that significantly impacts our daily functioning.
Seeking Medical Insight and Reassurance
I visited the optician twice within a few months due to my blurred vision. Initially, I was told my vision issues were just normal effects of ageing (because I am over 40), but a subsequent visit to different opticians offered more insight. This time, the optician acknowledged that my symptoms would be related to ME/CFS (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome), a condition I hadn't considered in my diagnosis journey.
Upon expressing my concerns about ME/CFS (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) potentially causing my deteriorating eye health, the optician surprisingly agreed, mentioning his wife also battles the condition. He reassured me that eye fatigue could indeed be a symptom of ME/CFS, leaving me feeling a mix of reassurance and frustration, knowing my eyesight might not improve.
Final thoughts
To manage the visual symptoms of ME/CFS, I've adopted several coping strategies, including taking regular breaks to rest my eyes, which helps lessen the strain and improve my vision. Adjusting my surroundings for better lighting is another change I've made to ease the symptoms and make living with chronic fatigue syndrome a bit more bearable.
Navigating life with myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME/CFS) is a constant battle, facing new, unwelcome symptoms like persistent fatigue and blurred vision. Each day is about learning to adapt and finding ways to move forward despite the challenges of this chronic illness.

Storage Tips for Your Busy Family
Let's face it, parenthood is a whirlwind. Between work, school activities, and keeping tiny humans alive (and hopefully thriving!) Finding time to organise can feel like an impossible feat. But fear not, fellow weary warriors! Here are some storage hacks to help you tame the ever-present clutter and reclaim your sanity (or at least a semblance of it).
Capitalise on Vertical Space
Floor space is precious real estate in a busy home. Utilise walls with shelves, cabinets, and pegboards. Hanging storage solutions like shoe organisers are great for toys, craft supplies, or even cleaning products.
Contain Yourself (and Your Kids' Stuff)
Baskets and bins are your new best friends. Use them to corral toys, books, games, or anything else that tends to migrate around the house. Clear bins allow you to see what's inside, while opaque ones can hide away less aesthetically pleasing items.
Label Like a Pro
Clear labelling is key, especially for little ones who are learning to clean up after themselves. Use pictures for non-readers, or a combination of pictures and words. Labelling shelves, bins, and drawers makes it easy for everyone to find what they need and put it back in its designated spot.
Think Outside the Box (Literally)
Repurpose everyday items for storage. Shoeboxes can hold crayons, decorative tins can become craft supply caddies, and even empty tissue boxes can be transformed into organisers for odds and ends.
Declutter Regularly
This might be the most important tip.  Make a habit of decluttering every few weeks or months. Get rid of broken toys, outgrown clothes, and anything else that's no longer serving a purpose.  Involve your kids in the process (age-appropriately!), and consider donating gently used items.
Embrace Multi-Functional Furniture
Invest in furniture that does double duty. Ottomans with storage compartments can hold blankets or toys. A bench with built-in shelves provides seating and storage in one. Every square foot counts!
Remember, Consistency is Key
The key to maintaining a semblance of order is consistency. Make putting things away a part of your daily routine, even if it's just a quick tidy-up before bed.  The more ingrained the habit becomes, the easier it will be to keep the clutter at bay.
By implementing these storage hacks, you can create a more organised and functional home for your busy family. Remember, it's not about achieving magazine-worthy perfection, but about creating a space that works for you and your loved ones.
Feeling Overwhelmed?
Sometimes, even the most organised parents need a little extra space. Self-storage units can be a lifesaver! Now Storage provides self storage in Reading with secure, indoor storage units in various sizes to meet your needs. Their container units are spacious enough to hold all the clutter you can throw at them.

Parenting Children with Physical Disabilities: A Guide for Caregivers
Parenting Children with Physical Disabilities: A Guide for Caregivers
Parenting a child with a physical disability, such as cerebral palsy, can present unique challenges and opportunities for growth. Understanding the condition, navigating the available resources, and providing appropriate care and support are crucial aspects of parenting in this context. In honour of Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month in the USA, let's delve into some essential tips for parents and caregivers to effectively support their children with physical disabilities.
Understanding Physical Disabilities and Cerebral Palsy
Before delving into specific tips, it's essential to grasp the nature of physical disabilities, including cerebral palsy. Physical disabilities can encompass a wide range of conditions that affect a person's mobility, coordination, and physical functioning. Cerebral palsy, in particular, is a group of permanent movement disorders that appear in early childhood, typically resulting from abnormal development or damage to the parts of the brain that control movement, balance, and posture.
Cerebral palsy can manifest in various forms, ranging from mild to severe, and may affect one or more limbs or the entire body. Common symptoms include muscle stiffness or spasticity, involuntary movements, poor coordination, and difficulties with balance and posture. While there is currently no cure for cerebral palsy, early intervention, therapy, and supportive care can significantly improve a child's quality of life and functional abilities.
Tips for Parenting Children with Physical Disabilities
Educate Yourself: Take the time to educate yourself about your child's specific condition, including its causes, symptoms, and potential treatments. Consult reliable sources such as medical professionals, reputable websites, and support organizations like the Cerebral Palsy Foundation for accurate information.
Build a Support Network: Surround yourself and your child with a supportive network of family, friends, therapists, and healthcare providers who understand and can assist with your child's unique needs. Connecting with other parents of children with similar disabilities through support groups or online forums can also provide valuable insight and emotional support.
Promote Independence: Encourage your child to develop independence to the best of their abilities. Offer opportunities for them to practice self-care tasks, such as dressing, feeding, and grooming, while providing assistance and support as needed. Assistive devices and adaptive equipment, such as specialized utensils or mobility aids, can also facilitate independence.
Embrace Therapy: Early intervention is key to optimizing outcomes for children with cerebral palsy. Explore different types of therapy, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy, tailored to address your child's specific needs and challenges. Research indicates that intensive therapy programs, such as Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT), can lead to significant improvements in motor function and mobility for children with cerebral palsy.
Stay Active: Encourage your child to engage in regular physical activity suited to their abilities and interests. Physical activity not only promotes physical health and mobility but also boosts self-esteem and socialization skills. Adaptive sports programs, recreational therapy, and inclusive playgrounds offer opportunities for children with disabilities to participate in physical activities alongside their peers.
Explore Assistive Technology: Keep abreast of the latest advancements in assistive technology designed to enhance independence and improve quality of life for individuals with physical disabilities. From mobility devices like wheelchairs and walkers to communication aids and adaptive computer technology, a wide range of tools and devices are available to support your child's needs.
Advocate for Accessibility: Advocate for accessibility and inclusion in your community, schools, and public spaces to ensure that your child has equal access to education, recreational opportunities, and social participation. Must-Have Vacation Essentials - Chronic Illness
Importance of Careful Packing for a Stress-Free Vacation
As someone who suffers from chronic illness, when it comes to embarking on a vacation, one cannot underestimate the significance of careful packing. It is an essential step that can make or break the entire trip.
Make a list
Living with a chronic illness means that we have to approach life a little differently. This includes how we pack for trips or vacations. In these situations, forgetting even one crucial item could mean the difference between enjoying our holiday and grappling with discomfort or worse. That’s why making a thoughtful packing list ahead of time becomes so important. That's why meticulous packing is of utmost importance. Thus, if you are like me, I love making lists.
I love a list!
Packing
By taking the time to pack thoughtfully and thoroughly, we travellers with chronic illnesses can ensure that we have everything needed for a seamless and enjoyable vacation experience. From travel documents to personal essentials and medication, each item holds its own significance and contributes to the overall success of the holiday.
It is the small things that often make the biggest difference.
Moreover, careful packing not only helps in avoiding the stress of forgetting important items but also allows travellers with chronic illnesses to maximise holiday enjoyment. When you have everything, you need at your fingertips, you can fully immerse yourself in the experience without any unnecessary distractions or worries. Whether it's a beach vacation, a city trip, or a cruise, having the right items readily available can enhance the overall quality of your holiday.
Thorough packing also ensures that you have all the necessary supplies and comforts to make your vacation as comfortable as possible. From toiletries to clothing options, having a well-packed suitcase means you won't have to compromise on your personal needs and preferences. It allows you to feel at ease and confident throughout the holiday, knowing that you have everything needed to make the most of the time away from home.
Must-Have Travel Essentials for Those Living with Chronic Illness
What are the must-have travel essentials we need to pack? Depending on your specific needs and condition, these might include medical IDs or alert bracelets, prescription and non-prescription medications, cooling towels if heat exacerbates symptoms, Kinaesthetic tape, compression socks for those long flights, walking sticks, pain-relief gadgets...the list goes on!:
Get Your Medical Essentials Ready
As anyone managing a chronic illness knows, these essentials can be lifesavers when it comes to handling symptoms amidst the holiday. Pack all your medications, prescription and non-prescription.
Also, keep a list of all my medications in your handbag while on holiday. This helps to ensure that you have quick access to important information in case of an emergency or if needed to refill a prescription while away from home.
Having a list of my medications also helps me communicate effectively with healthcare providers or pharmacists if I require medical assistance during my travels. Additionally, in the event that my luggage or medication pillbox is misplaced, having a record of my medications in my handbag - can be invaluable for proving my medical needs and obtaining replacements.
Nutrition & Hydration Are Key
Dehydration and hunger pangs could lead to discomfort and worsened symptoms. Staying hydrated and eating nutritious snacks are crucial in maintaining energy levels throughout the festivities. Pack sufficient refillable water bottles and plenty of healthy snacks.
Self-care During the Holiday
Prioritise self-care every day of your holiday! As someone with ME/CFS (Myalgic encephalomyelitis), rest/pacing is an essential part of managing my chronic illness. Take breaks when needed without feeling guilty about missing out on activities.
Also, resting doesn’t only mean physical relaxation; it's also about mental calm. Practice mindfulness or meditation to help keep stress at bay.
Dress for Comfort
Without compromising on style for your holiday, opt for clothing that prioritises comfort; loose, breathable fabrics that won't irritate or confine you.
Consider heating pads or cooling towels as accessories. For those dealing with chronic conditions, these items aren’t just accessories; they're essential tools for symptom management.
Finding Comfortable and Stylish Clothing Without Sacrificing Fashion
By exploring different fabric options, such as cotton, bamboo, or modal, and seeking out clothing designed with comfort in mind, I've been able to curate a wardrobe that effortlessly blends style and comfort. Embracing a mix of loose-fitting yet fashionable pieces and paying attention to garment details, like stretchy waistbands, has allowed me to strike the perfect balance between style and comfort.
Final Thoughts
Travelling with a chronic illness doesn't mean we can't enjoy ourselves—it just requires a bit more preparation; lists and careful packing.
Remember—the key here is not only being prepared but also maintaining comfort during travel as well as throughout your vacation. After all, holidays are about relaxation and enjoyment! So next time you're going on holiday make sure you pack smartly and don't let anything—especially your chronic illness—hold you back from having a fantastic time!

5 Ways Springtime Can Bring Relief and Renewal for Those with Chronic Illness
Intro
As the chilly winter fades away, the colourful blossoming of spring appears as a season of renewal, providing a feeling of rejuvenation to those struggling with chronic illnesses. This time of change can certainly serve as a source of hope and revitalization for many, including myself.
How Weather Can Affect Chronic Illnesses
As someone who lives with chronic illnesses, I have realized that the weather can significantly impact my health. Changes in temperature, air pressure, and the cold can exacerbate my symptoms, such as chronic joint pain, muscle pain, and fatigue. Meanwhile, excessive heat can lead to dehydration, brain fog and debilitating fatigue. By paying attention to the weather, I can better manage my health.
I keep track of the weather forecast so that I can make necessary adjustments to my daily routine. For example, this helps me manage the effects of cold weather on my chronic illness. For example, I wear warm clothing such as fluffy socks and a blanket to prevent joint pain.
Additionally, in managing the effects of warm weather, I prioritize staying well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water and avoiding sugary. Wearing lightweight, breathable clothing and staying indoors during the hottest parts of the day also helps me stay comfortable. Additionally, using fans or air conditioning to keep my living space cool is essential.
It's important to listen to my body and take breaks/pace when needed, and I find that planning activities for cooler parts of the day can make a significant difference. By being proactive and mindful of these strategies, I can better cope with the impact of weather on my chronic illness.
Spring is here
Below I have explored five ways that the renewal of springtime can uplift spirits and provide solace amidst ongoing chronic illnesses and health challenges.
The Healing Power of Spring Air
As the first signs of spring emerge, it signals a time for renewal, especially for those with chronic illnesses. The shift to warmer weather encourages gentle outdoor activities, which can improve health through mild exercise and movement. Furthermore, it can enhance mental well-being by interrupting the indoor routine and providing a refreshing change of scenery.
Nature’s Colours
Springtime is a showcase of nature's healing power, with its vibrant colours that can help alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression related to chronic illness. The contrast of blooming flowers and lush green landscapes against the dull winter greys can have a profoundly calming effect.
Fresh Food from Nature’s Kitchen
With the arrival of spring, fresh produce becomes available, which is brimming with essential nutrients that are crucial for managing chronic health conditions. The delights of strawberries and the nutritional wealth of spinach from farmer's markets not only provide a palatable taste but also support overall health and wellness.
Gentle Physical Activity Bathed in Sunshine
Spending time outdoors is not just about sitting on a park bench in the sunshine. It could also mean engaging in light activities such as gardening, which can provide a boost of Vitamin D that is beneficial for people with chronic illnesses. Vitamin D is known to have positive properties that can help alleviate the symptoms of such chronic illnesses.
Spring - A Season of Hope
It is an opportunity for us with chronic illnesses to acknowledge the symbolic significance of spring as a season of renewal and hope. The transition from the cold of winter to the warmth of spring serves as a powerful reminder that change is on the horizon, signalling that better days are within reach.
Spring reminds us that change is not only possible but inevitable and that we should embrace this change with open arms. The blooming of flowers, the chirping of birds, and the longer daylight hours all contribute to the feeling of renewal that spring brings. It is a time to shed the darkness of winter and embrace the light and promise of a new season.
Final thoughts
I am eagerly looking forward to the many advantages that this season brings, as every attempt to care for my health is a step towards a brighter future, even when you are a chronic illness sufferer. Spring is an enchanting season that symbolizes the revival of life after a long and harsh winter.
This time of the year provides a perfect opportunity to pause, reflect and recharge, and is particularly for those of us struggling with chronic illnesses. The comforting presence of these beautiful creatures and the vibrant colours around us can bring a sense of hope and joy, and instill in us a deep sense of appreciation for the simple pleasures of life. Every effort in our health during this season is a step forward towards a brighter and happier future. soothing for the make to manage

Coping with Chronic Illness: Discovering Joy in Daily Rituals
The Power of Daily Rituals
Navigating through life with a chronic illness is daunting. The never-ending struggle to complete even the most basic of tasks can leave one feeling defeated and in despair. But amidst this turmoil, I have found solace and empowerment in my daily self-care routine rituals.
Each morning, after savouring my morning cup of tea, I take the time to adorn myself with jewellery, and make-up and spritz on a mist of perfume. Even though I won't be leaving the house, these seemingly insignificant actions hold great significance for me. And, it is important to me. It's not about impressing anyone else, but rather about making myself feel good and put together.
The simple act of applying makeup and putting on some jewellery helps me feel more confident and ready to face the day, even if it's just from the comfort of my own home. Plus, it's a small way to express my style and creativity, which will brighten my mood and boost my overall well-being.
These small self-care rituals serve as reminders that despite my chronic illness, I am still in control and capable of finding moments of joy in my life.
Below I explain why:
Finding Joy in Simple Pleasures
For me, putting on makeup each day is not just about enhancing my appearance; it is a sacred ritual that provides comfort and control when my health refuses to cooperate. The act of carefully applying each product brings a sense of calm and routine to my day. Wearing jewellery adds not only external sparkle but also an internal gleam that reminds me of my strength and resilience.
The Power of Scent and Sparkle
Spraying the scent of a favourite perfume fills me with happiness and creates an aura of positivity around me - an intimate experience that enlightens my senses and even triggers happy memories. And, the scent stays with me throughout the day.
Enhancing Social and Emotional Well-being
Amidst the isolating nature of living with chronic illness, these small rituals also play a crucial role in enhancing my social and emotional well-being. The act of engaging in these routines, even in the confines of my home, allows me to feel more connected to the outside world. The subtle boost in confidence and the sense of normalcy gained from these rituals facilitate more positive social interactions and help me maintain a sense of connection with others, thereby alleviating feelings of loneliness and isolation that often accompany chronic illness.
These practices play a crucial role in helping me cope with the demands of the daily life of living with a Chronic illness and Chronic pain. Without them, I find my mental health inevitably takes a toll.
The small pleasures in life
Acknowledging Bad Days
Of course, there are days (many) when fatigue and debilitating pain take over completely or post-exertional malaise (PEM) hits– times when I find myself unable to indulge even these little pleasures. But no matter how poor my health gets on those overwhelming days; I strive hard not to let it entirely steal the moments of normality and joy these routines provide me.
These small acts of self-care may seem trivial to some, but for me, they are essential in maintaining a sense of peace in an otherwise abnormal existence.
It is my way of reclaiming some semblance of "normal" in a life that is far from ordinary.
Final thoughts
Chronic illness may have drastically altered my life, but through embracing simple joys hidden within daily routines, I can reclaim some control and find fragments of happiness amidst all the adversity. These rituals act as subtle reminders that even in the face of immense challenges, there is still beauty and joy to be found in everyday life.
They serve as subtle reminders that I can still find fragments of happiness. And, they are great for my self-esteem as well as my emotional health.

Chronic Illness: Everyday Mundane Things I Struggle With - Arm and Hands
Chronic Illness: Everyday Mundane Things I Struggle With - Arm and Hands
Pain is a universal human experience; however, chronic pain -- the kind that lingers, interrupts your life and refuses to leave -- is a different beast altogether. This is a glimpse into my daily struggle with ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis), chronic tennis elbow, and severe cervical foraminal narrowing.
ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis)torments me significantly with arm issues. The trouble escalates in my right arm due to years of suffering from chronic tennis elbow. But it doesn't end there. I also have severe cervical spine foraminal narrowing which means that the passage where the nerves exit my spine narrows down, compressing those nerves slightly. This condition triggers problems down my right side especially affecting my hand, elbow and shoulder.
Thus, I experience a whole heap of issues with my right arm and hand.
More than pain
It's not only about battling constant intense pain; it's all about managing nerve pain too - neurological nightmares of tingling, heaviness, numbness, spasms etc.
With all my conditions, it restricts my arm and hand use considerably even in seemingly minor ways. For instance, trying to squeeze the liquid gel detergent out of a bottle turns into a painful battle; especially at the point when the bottle is quarter used, when I need to exert pressure on the bottle – something I find myself unable to do, due to pain.
Such trivial encounters upset me deeply, simply because they highlight my disabilities and limitations so blatantly and brutally.
It means now that when selecting laundry detergent, it becomes a decision based not only on preference but also on physical capability—can I squeeze the gel out? Even handling medication proves challenging as taking pills out from their dispenser or picking them up is more troublesome than it should be. Imagine losing crucial medication on the floor because of my finger dexterity issues, unfortunately, I do this often! Also, using spray bottles, the trigger can be extremely painful for me to keep pressing that trigger.
Makeup application, once an effortless process, now turns into a long, exhausting ordeal due to these limitations. Brushing my teeth becomes incredibly painful or just simply difficult as my arms and hands fatigue quickly and feel extremely heavy and painful. Brushing my hair and attempting to style it (tie it up), is immensely challenging with my arm. With the most upsetting thing is, I am unable to do my daughter’s hair.
I now only buy jersey sports bras as I can step into them and pull a sports bra up, thus, this avoids me having to do the hook-and-eye connection on a normal bra (which I find extremely challenging to do)
I use talk-to-text on my phone/laptop as typing and using my fingers can become quickly painful. Holding the phone to my ear can quickly become too much and too painful.
Constant reminders
Doing buttons-up, tying shoe laces – all these tiny mundane everyday tasks that I took for granted before, are now constantly reminding me that my body is failing me, my body is broken, and I am disabled.
Days that are particularly bad present even more challenges — things like cooking become almost unmanageable. Tasks like cutting fruit and vegetables become impossible. Other activities including sewing can lead to excruciating pain; making me pay for hours or even days afterwards if I push myself too far.
Although I'm slowly learning to use my left arm/hand more frequently, it doesn’t have full functionality without issues, and it also presents continuous difficulties.
Final thoughts
Living with chronic pain requires constant adaptation and resilience, dealing with both physical discomforts and emotional setbacks. Each day is a new challenge but it also provides opportunities (always trying to keep positive) for learning better ways of managing life despite limitations.
