Taliban has banned girls from school since two years; It’s a worsening crisis for all Afghans

The ban triggered global condemnation and remains the Taliban's biggest obstacle to gaining recognition as the legitimate rulers of Afghanistan.

ISLAMABAD: Two years after the Taliban banned girls from school beyond sixth grade, Afghanistan is the only country in the world with restrictions on female education. Now, the rights of Afghan women and children are on the agenda of the United Nations General Assembly Monday in New York.

The U.N. children’s agency says more than 1 million girls are affected by the ban, although it estimates 5 million were out of school before the Taliban takeover due to a lack of facilities and other reasons.

The ban triggered global condemnation and remains the Taliban's biggest obstacle to gaining recognition as the legitimate rulers of Afghanistan. But the Taliban defied the backlash and went further, excluding women and girls from higher education, public spaces like parks, and most jobs.

Here’s a look at the ban on girls’ education:

WHY DID THE TALIBAN EXCLUDE GIRLS FROM HIGH SCHOOL? The Taliban stopped girls’ education beyond sixth grade because they said it didn’t comply with their interpretation of Islamic law, or Sharia. They didn’t stop it for boys. In the past two years, they’ve shown no signs of progress in creating the conditions they say are needed for girls to return to class.

Their perspective on girls’ education partly comes from a specific school of 19th-century Islamic thought and partly from rural areas where tribalism is entrenched, according to regional expert Hassan Abbas.

“The ones who went on to develop the (Taliban) movement opted for ideas that are restrictive, orthodox to the extreme, and tribal,” said Abbas, who writes extensively about the Taliban. The leadership believes women should not participate in anything social, public and should especially be kept away from education, said Abbas.

The Taliban also stopped girls’ education when they ruled Afghanistan in the late 1990s.

WHAT DO MUSLIM-MAJORITY COUNTRIES SAY ABOUT THE BAN? There’s a consensus among clerics outside Afghanistan that Islam places equal emphasis on female and male education. “The Taliban have no basis or evidence to claim the contrary,” said Abbas. But pleas from individual countries and groups, like the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, have failed to sway the Taliban.

Syed Akbar Agha, a former Taliban front-line commander, said the insurgents espoused an Islamic system the day they entered Kabul in August 2021.

“They also gave Afghans and the outside world the idea that there would be an Islamic system in the country,” said Agha. “There is currently no (other) Islamic system in the world. The efforts of the international community are ongoing to implement democracy in Islamic countries and turn them away from the Islamic system.”

WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF THE BAN ON WOMEN? Roza Otunbayeva, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' special representative for Afghanistan and the head of the U.N. mission in Afghanistan, said one of the obvious impacts of an education ban is the lack of training of aspiring healthcare professionals.

Female medical students had their studies halted after last December’s Taliban edict banning higher education for women. Afghan women work in hospitals and clinics -- health care is one of the few sectors open to them — but the pipeline of qualified people will dry up. Afghan women cannot see male doctors, so children will also lose out on medical attention if women are their primary carers.

“Looking into the future and a scenario where nothing changes, where will the female doctors, midwives, gynecologists, or nurses come from?” Otunbayeva said in an email to The Associated Press. “In a strictly gender-segregated society, how will Afghan women be able to get the most basic healthcare services if there are no female professionals to treat them?”

WHAT IS THE IMPACT ON AFGHANISTAN'S WIDER POPULATION? The high school ban is not just about girls’ rights. It’s a worsening crisis for all Afghans.

Tens of thousands of teachers have lost their jobs. Support staff are also unemployed. Private institutions and businesses that benefited financially from girls’ education have been hit. Afghanistan has a shattered economy and people's incomes are plummeting. Excluding women from the job market hurts the country's GDP to the cost of billions of dollars, says UNICEF.

The Taliban are prioritizing Islamic knowledge over basic literacy and numeracy with their shift toward madrassas, or religious schools, paving the way for a generation of children with no contemporary or secular education to improve their or the country's economic future.

There are other consequences for the general population, like public health and child protection.

U.N. data says birth rates are higher among Afghan girls aged 15-19 who don't have secondary or higher education. A woman’s education can also determine if her children have basic immunization and if her daughters are married by the age of 18. The lack of women's education is among the major drivers of deprivation, says the U.N.

Aid groups say girls are at increased risk of child labor and child marriage because they're not at school, amid the growing hardships faced by families.

WILL THE TALIBAN CHANGE THEIR MINDS? The Taliban waged a decades-long jihad to implement their vision of Sharia. They are not backing down easily. Sanctions, frozen assets, the lack of official recognition, and widespread condemnation has made little difference.

Countries that have a relationship with the Taliban could make an impact. But they have different priorities, reducing the prospects of a united front on girls’ education.

Pakistan has concerns about a resurgence of militant activity. Iran and Central Asian countries have grievances about water resources. China is eyeing investment and mineral extraction opportunities.

There's a bigger likelihood of pressure coming from within Afghanistan.

The Taliban rule of today is different from that of decades ago. Senior leaders, including the chief spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, rely on social media for key messaging to Afghans at home and abroad.

They point to their success in eradicating narcotics and cracking down on armed groups like the Islamic State. But improving security and wiping out poppy crops will only satisfy people to a point.

While Afghans are concerned about the loss of girls' education, they have more immediate worries like earning money, putting food on the table, keeping a roof over their heads, and surviving droughts and harsh winters.

There is a desire within Afghanistan for the Taliban to have some kind of international acceptance, even if it's not recognition, so the economy can thrive.

Public opinion is much more relevant and influential today than it was during Taliban rule in the 90s, said Abbas. “Internal pressure from ordinary Afghans is going to ultimately push Kandahar in the corner and make a difference."

But it could take years for the ban's consequences to hit Afghan men and trigger a groundswell of unrest. Right now, it only affects girls and it's mostly women who have protested the slew of restrictions.

Agha said Afghans will support the ban if the end goal is to enforce hijab, the Islamic headscarf, and finish gender mixing. But they won't if it's simply to end girls' education outright.

“I think only the nation can lead the way,” he said.

No Toilet At Home, 3 Jharkhand Women Buried Alive In Field As Land Sinks

Patna: Three women in Jharkhand’s Dhanbad were buried alive on Sunday as land sunk around them while they were out to relieve themselves as they didn’t have toilets at their homes. One of the women was caught in the subsidence first, two others who had accompanied her tried to help, but were buried too.

The victims — Parla Devi, Thandhi Devi, and Mandava Devi — lived in the Dhobi Kulhi area of Gondudih colliery — which has unstable old underground workings, and is fire and subsidence affected. The Gondudih Khas Kusunda Colliery is operated by Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited.

A huge landslide occurred with a loud noise near Hilltop High-rise outsourcing company near Gondudih colliery in Dhanbad when the women had stepped out to relieve themselves, locals said, adding that they tried to save the women but failed.

Police and mine rescue teams of the BCCL arrived hours later even when they were immediately informed, locals alleged. Angered by the incident, the villagers accused BCCL of negligence and said the tragedy happened as people haven’t been properly rehabilitated from the subsidence-prone areas.

A large number of police and CISF personnel are present at the spot as rescue teams are trying to recover the three bodies. Dhanbad circle officer Prashant Kumar Layak said rescue operation is going, and process of providing compensation to the family members will start after the recovery of the bodies.

Activist Girish Babu who filed plea against Kerala CM's daughter found dead, cardiac arrest suspected

KOCHI: Activist Girish Babu (47) was found dead in his home in Kalamassery on Monday morning.

According to the police, the preliminary investigation behind the death suggests he died after a cardiac arrest. Girish was undergoing treatment for health-related issues, which he also published through a Facebook post last month. The police reached Girish’s house and started the inquest proceedings.

Girish has been living with his family in Kalamassery and it was his wife who found him dead in the bedroom this morning, police said. “It seems like a case of cardiac arrest. However, we can reach a final conclusion only based on the autopsy report,” said a police officer.

Several public interest petitions filed by Girish have created a political stir in Kerala. The cases, including the Palarivattom flyover scam and the ‘monthly payments’ allegations against Veena Vijayan, daughter of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, hogged headlines recently.

He moved to the Vigilance Court in Muvattupuzha, seeking an investigation into the alleged bribe paid by Cochin Minerals and Rutile Ltd. (CMRL) to Veena Vijayan. However, the court rejected the petition recently. Following this, he moved the High Court to hear the case. Girish’s death came while the court was about to consider his petition today.

Girish, who sought the probe citing revelations by the Income Tax Interim Board of Settlement (ITIBS), New Delhi, named the CM, and UDF leaders Ramesh Chennithala, P K Kunhalikutty, and V K Ebrahimkunju in the petition, claiming they, too, received bribes from CMRL. Mumbai airport private jet accident: Co-pilot with spinal injury moved to another hospital for surgery

MUMBAI: Neil Diwan, the co-pilot of a private jet that skidded off the runway at Mumbai airport suffered a spinal injury and has been moved to another hospital for surgery, Dr Deepak Namjoshi, the director of Criticare Asia hospital said on Friday.

He said seven others admitted to Criticare Asia’s Andheri East hospital are stable and being monitored.

A private jet veered off the runway while landing at the Mumbai airport on Thursday amid heavy rains and all the eight people onboard have been hospitalised with injuries.

The Learjet 45 aircraft VT-DBL belonging to VSR Ventures, had flown from Visakhapatnam.

“Neil Diwan (in his early twenties) has a spinal fracture and paraplegia (a condition where both the legs have no sensation). He expressed the desire to get operated by a doctor known to him, so he was moved to the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital on Thursday night,” Namjoshi said.

Sunil Kanjarbhat (46), the captain of the flight, sustained multiple abrasions with trauma to the chest wall and spine.

There is also a “wedge compression to L1 vertebra”, he said.

Namjoshi said passenger Dhruv Kotak (40) sustained injuries to his right arm with a small abrasion on the head.

His vitals are stable.

A tear is suspected in his biceps muscle, Namjoshi said.

A Danish citizen onboard, Lars Henrik Ostergaard Sorensen (58), suffered injury to the chest wall and upper back.

There is also a mild bilateral pleural haemorrhage and a few rib fractures; he has been advised conservative management and is currently stable, Namjoshi said.

11-yr-old drowns in flooded pit near Tambaram in Chennai

Police said the children came across a land where they spotted milkweed plants and started plucking the flowers. Suddenly, Vishwa allegedly slipped and fell into a pit filled with rainwater.

CHENNAI: An 11-year-old boy drowned in a 10-foot deep pit filled with rainwater while plucking flowers for Vinayakar Chaturthi, near Tambaram Sanatorium railway station, on Saturday. Police said the land, on which the pit is located, belongs to the railways and has been leased out to a school, but remains unused.

The boy was identified as K Vishwa, a Class 5 student. On Saturday evening, Vishwa and his friends set out to pluck milkweed flowers, considered auspicious for Vinayakar Chaturthi, in the locality.

Police said the children came across a land where they spotted milkweed plants and started plucking the flowers. Suddenly, Vishwa allegedly slipped and fell into a pit filled with rainwater. His friends raised an alarm and passersby rushed to the spot. On information, the police and Tambaram fire and rescue department personnel arrived at the scene. Vishwa’s body was recovered and sent to the Chromepet Government Hospital for postmortem.

The police said, “The land has been leased out to Velammal School and has a compound wall on only one side.” A probe is on.

Mussourie's 133-year-old historic hotel which housed skating rink gutted in massive fire

The 12-room Sidus Rink hotel located on the Camel Back Road was undergoing renovation. Prima facie, a short circuit appears to have caused the fire.

DEHRADUN: A massive fire broke out at the historic Sidus Rink hotel in Mussoorie in the early hours of Sunday destroying it completely. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained while preliminary investigation is suspecting an electrical short circuit.

The 12-room Sidus Rink hotel located on the Camel Back Road was undergoing renovation.

It housed what was once Asia’s largest wood-floor skating rink which was burnt to ashes.

According to the police, the owner of the hotel was sleeping in his room and was rescued by breaking open his window. Three hotel staff, who were trapped inside at the time of the blaze, were rescued safely, Mussoorie Station House Officer Shankar Singh told PTI.

Speaking to this newspaper, Station Fire Officer Dheeraj Singh Tadiyal said, “We received a call about a fire here at 5:10 am. A small fire tender was first sent to douse the fire and later two large fire tenders were sent. The fire was brought under control after nearly five hours of struggle. More than 50 lakh litres of water were used to douse the fire.”

“We had to return from the Camel Back area and take another route from Green Chowk as our fire tender vehicles could not pass through the Camel Back area due to parked cars, resulting in a 10-minute delay in reaching the site of the fire”, he added.

It took fire-fighters who came from Dehradun and Mussoorie nearly four hours to douse the fire, Mussoorie Circle Officer Anil Joshi told PTI.

Shankar Singh Bisht, the Station House Officer (SHO) at Mussoorie Police Station, told ANI that as renovation work was going on in the hotel, it was empty and there was been no loss of life.

Mussoorie Hotel Association president Sanjay Agarwal said most of the infrastructure of the building which was built in 1890 was built mainly of wood and a part of the rink still remains which is a threat to passers-by from Camel Back as it can crumble at any time.

“We have requested the Mussoorie police to ensure that the area should be barricaded till the entire debris is removed, “ he added.

Once Asia’s largest Historian Jaiprakash Uttarakhandi said Rink Mussoorie was a pride of the city and many competitions including the All India Roller Hockey Championship, Artistic Skating, Figure Skating were organised here. Its billiards room was where Michael Ferreira and Geet Sethi also practised.

William Shakespeare’s plays too used to be staged at the rink.

Nimma Kant, a senior journalist from Mussoorie, said, “Earlier, the owner of this hotel had given the land of the rink to a dentist in exchange for dental treatment. Its construction began in the late 18th century. After this, Rink was bought by Purna Chand & Sons. Recently, a year ago, the Agarwal brothers sold it.”

Student dies by suicide at NIT-Silchar, 40 injured in police lathi charge as protest turns violent 

The victim's classmates claimed that the Dean of Academics BK Roy insulted the victim who got six backlogs in his first-semester examination, which was held online in 2021 because of the pandemic.

GUWAHATI: A third-year student of NIT-Silchar allegedly died by suicide on the campus on Friday evening.

The body of the student, a native of Arunachal Pradesh, was found hanging in his hostel room.

Following this, his disconsolate classmates stopped the police from taking down the body alleging that he was forced to resort to the extreme step following actions of the college authority.

Two hours later, as the police managed to send the body for post-mortem examination, the students began a demonstration in front of the Dean of Academics BK Roy’s official residence on the campus.

They alleged that Roy had insulted the victim who got six backlogs in his first-semester examination, which was held online in 2021 because of the pandemic.

Due to the lockdown, he was at home and failed to attend the online classes. The backlog was the result of a lack of internet connectivity, they said.

The student had appealed to the authorities to conduct a special examination so that he could clear the backlogs but Roy allegedly insulted him.

Following this incident, he locked himself in his room and chose to end his life, they said.

The protest over the death escalated, and the students allegedly vandalized Roy’s residence, Cachar’s Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta said.

“They attacked the police and other officials as well. At one point, we had to lathi charge to control the situation. We are now investigating the matter,” he said.

In the lathi charge, 40 students were injured and they were sent to Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) for treatment.

The conditions of some of the students are stated to be critical, officials said.

NIT-Silchar director Dilip Kumar Baidya said he has sympathy for the student who died, but he had a poor academic record.

Cachar’s District Commissioner Rohan Kumar Jha visited the campus and formed a committee that will investigate the incident.

The students, however, said that they would continue their protest in a democratic manner.

“Our classmate died because of the wrong decisions of the authorities, we’ll continue our protest till justice is served,” said one of the protesters.

A large police contingent was deployed at the campus, along with one company of the CRPF, the SP said.
