I have a mute character in the story I’m writing and one of my beta readers suggested I use italics when they sign so that I don’t have to keep peppering “they signed” or “their hands flashed” throughout the piece.
But like…I always read italics in a different tone like they’re thoughts. It seems quieter than using normal quotations which makes what they say look less significant on the page than other character’s dialogue.
I really don’t think my audience needs me to use completely different punctuation around a mute character. There’s no need to act like they’re speaking a different language since their muteness isn’t a focal point in the story.
So really this reader’s comment has done the complete opposite of what they intended. Now I’m actively taking out as many of my “hands flashed” notations as possible and just writing in normal body language because, clearly, the other characters understand them and my audience doesn’t need to be coddled.

anwar is originally from the kalos region, born and raised in laverre city. he spent plenty of days underneath that ancient tree.
he started his journey at the typical age, became kalos champion at twelve years old, and continued on to other regions where he, once again, became a champion.
being a trainer is basically in his blood. it’s what he does. from a young age, after his parents somewhat neglected him for work, he began to train with pokémon from around his house.
during training school, he was the weird kid who didn’t really talk to others unless it was pokémon, training, or battling related. it’s not that he didn’t like to talk about those things, it’s just that he didn’t want to. so, he kind of got picked on for it.
during his time in the unova region he met a certain person named kiran syed and there’s more to that story but basically anwar would like everyone to know that KIRAN SUCKS.
after unova, he went to alola and now, at twenty-one years old, he’s here in the olten region and he’s ready to become it’s champion.
