It had been a couple of days since Trevor and I's "situation" which Wes had walked in on, but he kept quiet about it for the rest of the other two since we both knew they would flip out. Trevor left for Nashville yesterday to play against the Predators. Our date night Friday felt like years away, but I had to take it one step at a time. It was the first Monday of November and the radio stations had already been corrupted by Christmas music.
Alex complained about it, whining about how it was too early for them to play Christmas music, but Mal and I disagreed. Listening to all this Christmas music Mal played from the Alexa in our living room as the 4 of us lounged around reminded me so much of my mom. I proposed the question to the group, "You guys wanna have a beach day at my mom's place?" I prayed they would say yes just so I could see her and update her about life recently.
One by one they agreed, Wes exclaimed, "I haven't seen Ms. Janene in so long!" Though Wes grew up with me because of his mom, Karina, being my mom's all-time best friend, he still called my mom 'Ms. Janene'.
I texted my mom to see if she was home and if we could come up to her house, and she said yes. The group split up after we got my mom's approval and got ready for our beach trip. I put on a two-piece black bathing suit, throwing on a white halter tank top and jorts over top. I paired it with my sunglasses and white Birkenstocks. I covered up the dark purple hickeys Trevor left on my neck with color corrector and foundation. I then grabbed my tote bag and grabbed my book, annotation kit, Airpods, a portable charger plus cord, and wallet. I went into the kitchen and grabbed my navy blue off-brand hydro flask, filling it up with water.
It didn't take long for the others to finish getting ready. We didn't bring a lot since my mom's house was right on the beach. Jacob, her boyfriend and the perfect guy for her, owned some sort of online company that made him loaded, so he bought a house for him and her to live in together which was right by the water.
"You guys ready?" I asked as I grabbed my car keys.
🎵
It was only supposed to be a 40-minute drive up to Huntington, but it took almost an hour due to traffic. When we finally made it to the house, I pulled into the driveway and parked the car. We all piled out of the car and like excited children trick-or-treating, Alex and Weston ran up to the door. I was more focused on the Christmas decorations that were already up, it hadn't even been a week since Halloween. Alex was the first to make it to the doorbell which gave him the honor of ringing it. Mal and I finally made it up to the porch when the door opened.
Jacob had a wide smile on his face as he greeted the boys. "Hey! Come on in," he invited as he moved out of the way for us all to enter. When we all made it inside, we each got a hug from him. Each of us took our shoes off and lined them up by the front door. "Your mom is in the kitchen." I knew he intended to say that for just me, but my mom felt like everyone's mom, especially Weston's.
"Thanks, Jacob," I said as I led the group through the large arch door frame that led to the kitchen. There my mom was, taking cookies out of the oven and placing them on top of the stove. "Hi, mama!"
She turned back to me and flashed an enthusiastic grin as she threw the mitts off. "Hi, sweet pea!" She rushed over to me and gave me a tight hug. "I missed you so much!" She gave me a kiss on my forehead. She then turned to the rest of my party and said, "I missed you too, children!" She gave each of them a hug and a kiss on the cheek. I could hear the Christmas music coming from the living room which is where Jacob kept the record player his dad had gifted to him before he passed away. "You guys came at the perfect time, just let the cookies cool down for a bit and then they'll be good to eat. Go get yourselves comfortable in the living room and I'll bring them out."
"Yes, ma'am!" Alex skipped to the living room and flopped onto his favorite spot on the couch. Mal popped down next to him and Weston and I sat on the couch we claimed. I found out that the vinyl my mom had playing was Ella Fitzgerald's Christmas album, 'Ella Wishes You A Swinging Christmas'.
Shortly after we sat down on the couch, Jacob also joined us. He sat on his reclining chair like he always had since they bought the house. My mom came out with cookies a couple of minutes later and placed the Christmas-themed plate in the center of the glass coffee table. Jacob reached for a cookie, but my mom slapped his hand away. "Let the kids get some first!" she tutted. Each of us got a cookie quickly, and then Jacob got one. "Hayden and Wes, will you come with me to get some hot chocolate?"
"Yes, mama!" I sprung up from my spot on the couch along with Weston and made our way to the kitchen with my mom.
She grabbed 6 mugs from the cabinet above the dishwasher and lined them up along the countertop. "How have you guys been?" she asked as she made her way over to the refrigerator. "Could you grab some hot cocoa mix from the pantry?"
Wes and I made our way over to the pantry and grabbed 6 packets. I decided I would answer first since I didn't think Wes really wanted to talk about Alejandro. "I've been good," I said as she poured the milk into the milk boiler on the stove.
"Yeah, she's got herself a little boyfriend now," Wes added as he nudged me with his elbow playfully. I rolled my eyes and laughed with red cheeks.
"Do you really?" My mom's eyes lit up as a smile grew on her face. "What's his name?" She turned on the boiler and then turned to me, leaning against the counter with one hand.
"Well, we're not dating yet, we're just seeing each other," I had a sheepish smile on my face as I answered. "His name is Trevor and he's really sweet."
"I'm sure he is," Weston chimed in, now causing me to nudge him with my elbow. He laughed at my attempt to keep him quiet.
My mom giggled a bit and said, "Oh, you two. Spill what's going on. What does he do?"
"He plays hockey for the Anaheim Ducks." I sat down on a stool near the island in the middle of the unnecessarily large kitchen.
She gasped, "You got yourself a professional athlete! You're officially a WAG like Taylor Swift." I rolled my eyes and scoffed. "I'm serious, that's a huge thing. I'm happy that you're happy, sweet pea." She then turned to Wes who sat down next to me and asked him how he was doing. He sighed as a faint smile appeared on his face. "Well, I found out that Alejandro left me for one of my best friends, now my ex-best friend, so I'm not doing the best." My mom gave him a sympathetic look as came over to the island where we were. "But nothing like how shocked I was to find Hayden on top of Trevor as he gave her hickeys."
I gasped loudly and covered his mouth, my cheeks flushed bright red. My mom gasped as she looked over at me. "Oh, my God, Wes! I do not need to know this stuff about my daughter!" she snorted as she looked back at me. "But the fact you tried to hide them from me like a high schooler is hilarious. Foundation?" I nodded my head, embarrassed. "The trick, sweet pea, is using a cold spoon to get rid of the color." She then looked over at my neck and winced, "Yeah, I can kind of see the dark marks. Holy shit, they're huge!"
"Can we please stop talking about my hickeys?" I begged, causing my mom and Weston to laugh.
It took a moment for me to come back from the embarrassment of my mom finding out Trevor had marked my neck up and lecturing me about how I to get rid of them better. She poured the now warm milk into the mugs and Wes and I mixed in the cocoa. My mom decorated them with whipped cream, marshmallows, and red and green sprinkles. Each of us took 2 cups out and handed them off to Alex, Mal, and Jacob.
Jacob thanked my mom and took a sip of his hot cocoa. He then asked Alex and Mal, "So how long have you two been together now?"
Both of them became a flustered mess as they both looked at each other with wide eyes and anxious smiles. Like I said, they looked and acted like a couple. "We're not dating," they said in sync. My mom shot a doubtful glance at me as she took a sip of her hot cocoa causing me to crack a small smile. Alex then stuffed a cookie in his mouth while Mal took a long sip of her hot cocoa. It was all hysterical and brought the attention off me for a bit.
🎵
We hung out in the house longer than I thought we would, but we eventually went down to the water. My mom had given us towels for us to use and beach chairs. Alex grabbed a volleyball from my old bedroom and brought to the beach with us. The beach was exclusively for Shoreside residents and guests of the residents, you needed special permission to be able to access the beach. Since everyone around Shoreside knew Pink Slip, they knew we were special guests of both Jacob and my mom.
I set up my chair next to Mal's and soaked up the sun's rays. Weston and Alex were already running down to the water, splashing around like children. Jacob decided to stay up at the house, so my mom decided to accompany us. She sat down next to us on her beach chair and enjoyed her time with her two favorite girls. I'm an only child, so having a close group of best friends like this meant they were constantly around like family which my mom loved since she wanted more kids. "So, what else has been going on with you guys? Any music coming up?"
Mal turned to my mom and smiled brightly. "Actually, yeah! You know Hayden's writing songs for our new album coming up?"
"I did not!" My mom turned to me appalled. "That's great, sweet pea. What all do you have right now?"
I know I told Trevor that no one other than me and my bandmates were allowed to know about upcoming music, but technically I broke that rule since I decided to add 'Halley's Comet' to the album. Plus, she's my mom! Of course, I was gonna tell her what was going on. "I really only have two songs right now," I answered.
"Really?" Mal's eyebrows furrowed as a smile plastered her face. "What else did you write?"
"Well, I found something from my old sophomore year songbook," I replied. "Trevor's request."
"Of course it is," Mal teased. "Did you know your daughter is practically dating a famous hockey player?"
My mom glanced over at me and chuckled, "Yes, I do." She implied that she knew more than she needed to with her tone of voice, but Mal didn't pick up on it.
She instead grabbed her phone and pulled something. She then handed the phone over to my mom with a picture of Trevor and me from when we were with Jamie and him. "That's them together. Aren't they adorable?"
My mom put her sunglasses on the top of her head as she brought the screen closer to her face and squinted her eyes. "Oh, I remember that boy! He was at Jacob's mom's party, such a sweetheart. I think he's a good pick," she said as she winked.
"I think so too," I replied. "He's currently in Nashville for a game tomorrow, then he's going to Colorado for another game the next day. When he gets back, he's taking me out to dinner."
"Do you know where yet?" Mal asked as she took her phone back from my mom.
I shook my head. "I think he's surprising me or he's waiting until it's closer to Friday to tell me."
"You guys coming in the water or are you just gonna gossip the whole time?" Alex yelled from the water, his hands cupped around his mouth to project his voice louder. He was drenched, breathing heavily like a child. Wes came up from behind him and hopped on his back. He yelped, "You asshole!" Mal and I laughed loudly as we got from our chairs and stripped down to our bathing suits before running to the water.
🎵
I sat on the carpet with my songbook and keyboard, going through the process of writing a song. "It is currently November 2nd, 2023. Uh, it's just me this time trying to write some music." I felt like being isolated in my room writing would get me the best results for something more personal. While playing random keys on the keyboard, my mind kept running back to Trevor and I making out on the floor and my only thoughts being 'I'm falling in love again'.
I played a couple of chords on the piano and sang, almost in a hum, "Uh oh, I'm falling in love. Oh no, I'm falling in love again... Oh, I'm falling in love." I quickly moved my hands from the keys to my songbook and pen, writing those lyrics down as the chorus. I ran my fingers through my hair as I tried to remember any other thoughts from that night.
"Downward spiral," I muttered. "Downward spiral. Downward spiral..." By repeating it out loud, I thought it would help me come up with a line. I gasped and clasped my hands together as I said, "I thought the plane was going down, how'd you turn it right around?!" A bright smile formed on my face as I scribbled that lyric down on the songbook. I repeated this process and with the help of my memory with Trevor and my caffeinated tea, I was able to come up with 'Labyrinth'.
I recorded myself lazily singing on my MacBook and moved that recording to GarageBand. Now it was time to come up with some sort of instrumental track to match the vibe of the song. I had snuck a glance down at the voice memo I was recording on my phone, I had been here for almost an hour. I figured this song could use some piano, a different sound on the electric guitar, and a quieter bass and drum sound. With that, I came up with 3 different demos and decided to call it a night. The deadline I assigned myself was December 10th, which meant there was a little over a month left for me to write all 7 more songs, collect everyone to learn them, get Aubrey's approval, and then record them. I should've started this sooner.

In the past year of living with my friends, this was the first time in a while I had the house to myself. It was the one night that Mal, Alex, and Wes all had individual plans and I did not. I watched Trevor’s hockey game last night and he played well, but since there’s no game tonight I had nothing else to do.
I sat in the living room with my songbook and my keyboard. I just hit random keys on the keyboard and prayed that something would come to me. I played a note and sang out, ”I…want you to know.” I couldn’t come up with anything after that, so I just wrote that down in the songbook and resumed. I repeated the same lyric over and over, trying different keys.
My process was interrupted by knocking at the front door. I whipped my head in the direction of the door and noticed that I had completely missed Trevor’s texts from a while ago. “Shit,” I muttered as I grabbed my phone and checked the texts, making my way up to the door.
Trevor had texted me saying he was gonna head over today with some food after practice. I hadn’t realized my notifications were silenced. I opened the front door and there stood Trevor with two paper bags and a bright smile. “I brought food over to help you write!” he exclaimed as he held the two bags up.
I let out a faint giggle before I moved out of the way and let him in. “Thanks,” I said as I shut the door when he entered and followed him into the kitchen. “I didn’t see your texts, my notifications were silent.” It was obvious I hadn’t either. I was wearing my pajamas and my hair was a mess along with the apartment. “Sorry for the mess. I didn’t expect company.”
He placed the bags down on the kitchen island and replied, “Oh, my apartment is much worse. I live with 2 other guys, mind you.” He pulled out a couple of take-out boxes and looked inside one before handing it over to me. “I got you a BLT from Gigi’s down the road.”
I smiled as I took and box and looked at the sandwich. I haven’t had Gigi’s in forever. “Thanks,” I said as I brought my food over to the dining table and sat down. “I thought you would’ve been out partying after your win yesterday.” I then took a bite of my sandwich.
He chuckled, “Nah, we did that yesterday.” He grabbed his own box and brought it over to the table as well, sitting next to me. “I just joined them in going to Gigi’s for a bit, but I got food to go and came over here.”
I nodded my head and hummed. “How did you know which apartment was mine?” I asked him before taking a fry and eating it.
“Mal told me,” he answered before taking a bite of his sandwich. “She said that you were home alone and needed a babysitter.”
I gasped, fake offended but also kind of shocked Mal had texted him that. First off, didn’t know they were in contact, and second, she treated me like a kid just like Alex does. Whatever, this is for another day. I just brushed it off and said, “I appreciate the food. You want anything to drink?”
“Let me see what you guys have,” he answered. I got up from my chair and made my way over to the fridge, Trevor following close behind me. I opened the fridge and looked at the drink options. I could feel his presence from behind me as he peered over my shoulder. I moved out of the way so he could grab whatever he wanted. He then grabbed himself a bottle of Coke before looking up at me. “What do you want?”
He leaned against the fridge with one hand as he looked down at me, an alluring grin on his face. I felt my face flush with heat as I answered, “Uh, I’ll have a Dr. Pepper.” He grabbed the drink for me and held it out, grabbing himself one as well. “Thanks!” I made my way back to the table and sat down.
Trevor chuckled a bit as he sat back down at the table. “You got anything new?” he asked before snagging one of my fries. “Even though I’m not allowed to know.”
“Well, no,” I answered. “I was working on something, but you interrupted me and my writing process!” He gasped, throwing his hand over his heart. I laughed in response and took another fry, taking a bite. “But, I could play something I wrote in high school…”
A smile grew on Trevor’s face as he said, “Yes, please! I want to hear anything!” His desperation made me laugh, I didn’t think it was that serious, but it was to him. We finished eating shortly after that and I grabbed my keyboard and songbook from the living room floor and walked back to my room.
“Follow me,” I said. He threw his trash away and chased after me with his drink. I placed everything on the ground and gestured to Trevor all the songbooks lined up on my bookshelf. “Pick one.” He hummed as he bent down and dragged his finger along the bindings of the songbooks. He snagged one randomly and held it up to me. It was from sophomore year when my parents got divorced.
I knew a lot of the content would be depressing, but I knew there were some songs that were love songs. I flipped through the pages, passing every uninteresting or depressing one until I landed on ’Halley’s Comet’. “Alright, I semi-remember how to play this,” I giggled as I sat down in front of the keyboard. “So bare with me.”
Trevor sat next to me, scooting close to me so there was no space between us. This caused my cheeks to flush a faint red color. I looked down at the keyboard and then up at the journal, seeing what chords I wrote down. I was hesitant to play since I was reading this again after years. I played the beginning of the song, my fingers gaining their muscle memory back for the song. “I don't want it… and I don't want to want you,” I sang, “but in my dreams, I seem to be more honest, and I must admit you’ve been in quite a few.”
I wrote Halley’s Comet when I had first started seeing James, but not dating him, and how I was slowly starting to fall for him harder than I wanted to. The reason I was so stubborn about falling in love was because of my dad and my mom’s divorce and how heartbroken it left her. I wasn’t even aware of the fact I was singing a song I had written for James when I had Trevor next to me, admiring every lyric I sang and every chord I played.
“Halley’s comet,” I sang, “comes around more often than I do… but you’re all it takes for me to break a promise, silly me to fall in love with you.” I felt the smile on my face grow when I glanced over at Trevor, the look of awe on his face was adorable. His eyes were focused on my hands as I played the keyboard and he was slack-jawed. “I was good at feeling nothin’, now I’m hopeless… What a drag to love you like I do.”
My fingers effortlessly played the instrumental break, causing his eyes to go wide. I cracked another small smile and fought back the laugh that hung in my throat. After impressing him with the piano break, I sang the outro of the song, “I’m sitting in my room, haven’t slept in a week or two… I think I might’ve fallen in love.” I looked back up at Trevor, whose glimmering eyes I met. “What am I to do…?” I played the last chord and listened as the newfound silence rang in the air.
Trevor glanced down at the piano and then back up at me. He was speechless, scoffing as he tried to come up with anything to say. “Hayden,” he whispered, “that was beautiful… I want that on the album.” He brought his hand up to my face and caressed my cheek with his thumb. If I wasn’t mistaken, I was falling in love again.
“You do…?” These were the only words that could come from my mouth, as the tension in the air suffocated me. I felt like my life had been going a downward spiral, but how was he able to change that? How was one interview the thing that changed that?
“Yeah,” Trevor husked, “I do, Hay…” His voice trailed, leaving us in the silent tense air once again. There was a flame already ignited, but this… this was the fuel to the fire. I gazed at his eyes before flickering my attention down to his lips. He leaned in, closing the space between us, and gave me a small peck on the lips.
This was his way of testing the waters to see what I would do. Before I knew it, I lost control over my body and impulsively crushed my mouth against his. Trevor’s hands didn’t skip a beat to sink into my hair from the nape of my neck, grasping to it tightly but not to the point of pain. My hand rested on the side of his neck, the other rested on his chest. His hands traveled down to my waist, pulling my body onto his lap.
Trevor pulled away, staring up at me while his chest heaved with his deep breaths. I assumed he was using this as a break to catch his breath like I was using it, but he had other intentions. Before I could say anything about the kiss and how exhilarating it was, he buried his face into the crook of my neck and began nibbling at it. My eyes widened and my face went red.
My mind was so clouded with arousal, that I wasn’t able to pinpoint a single of my thoughts that buzzed throughout my head. The only way I could signal to Trevor that I was enjoying myself was by letting out a quiet moan and gripping his curls. I could feel his body shake as he chuckled. Jackass, I thought. I would’ve had a snarky comment in return if he hadn’t bit the sensitive part of my neck. A whimper escaped my mouth, leaving me shocked that I could even produce a sound like that.
My head spun as my body temperature rose, leaving me scorching hot. My breaths were hitched and heavy, my knuckles growing white with how tight I held onto his hair. “Trevor,” I finally managed to whisper. I could tell there were now dark marks on the right side of my neck that belonged to him.
I shouldn’t have left my door open and I should’ve remembered the type of roommates I had. Though my physical body was there at that moment, my consciousness was on another planet of satisfaction and pleasure. Trevor’s cold hands had slipped under my shirt and his fingers dug into my fiery skin. I was unaware of the fact the front door had opened and someone was approaching my room, and clearly, Trevor was too busy giving me an out-of-world experience to also notice.
“Oh, my god!” Trevor’s head shot up, dragging me back to the real world. His and I’s attention whipped over to my door which Weston was standing in. He had a look of shock and disturbance on his face, but I noticed his face was red and puffy along with his eyes. He had been crying. “I-I’m so sorry!” he apologized before slamming my door shut.
I couldn’t just go back to hooking up with Trevor after that. I was more concerned about why my best friend was crying over the fact he had ruined the mood. “Shit,” I mumbled as I got up from Trevor’s lap, his grasp on my body loosening as I did so. “I-I gotta check on Wes, I’m so sorry. That was amazing and I think the best experience I’ve ever had in my life!”
Trevor nervously chuckled in response and got up. “Yeah, it was. I get it, I’ll head out so you two can talk,” he said as he glanced down at the keyboard. “Alright, yeah.” I walked with him to the front door and he slipped on his shoes. “I really enjoyed spending time with you and I really liked the song.” He had a smile so contagious on his face that I felt one slip onto my own. “I have 2 games out of town this week, the 14th and 15th, but I want to take you out on an actual date when I get back.”
I felt the butterflies multiply in my stomach when he popped the question. He didn’t know how long I was waiting for him to ask me out on an official date. “Yes, of course, I would,” I replied with a wide grin on my face which caused my eyes to slightly squint. Before he left, he gave me a hug and a kiss on my temple.
When the front door shut, I remembered why he left and made my way to Weston’s room. The way our condo was set up, there were two rooms near the front door, mine and Mal’s, then the kitchen between the two rooms in the back, Wes’s and Alex’s. I grabbed a bottle of water for Wes from the fridge and went to his room.
He had the door open while he sat on his bed, sniffling as he wiped some tears from his cheeks. I entered and sat down on the bed next to him, holding out the water to him. He just took it from me and immediately opened it, chugging away. I knew that his throat would be dry from all the crying. I also knew he would just bury under his gray duvet for as long as his body let him, maybe even longer.
“You wanna explain what happened?” I asked him in a soft-spoken voice, placing my hand in his.
He gripped my hand slightly as he looked down at them. “Yeah,” he mumbled. “I ended up going back over to Alejandro’s house to tell him that I’m done with him.” His words were shaky as he tried to explain what was going on.
I grazed my thumb over his hand to soothe him down as he continued explaining, “But when I went over there, I saw another car in the driveway… It was Valarie’s.” My gut twisted at the realization of where the story was going. “When I went up to the door and knocked on it, Alejandro answered shirtless and was all upset with me coming to his house instead of just texting him. Then Valarie came around the corner wearing one of his shirts.”
His voice cracked as he took a break from talking. He let out a shaky breath and pressed the back of his other hand against his mouth, his eyes were glossy as he did his best to hold back his returning tears, but inevitably lost that battle. He choked out, “That’s when I found out Valarie was the one who Alejandro left me for.
Even though I knew it was going there, it still surprised me. My words spewed out like venom as I said, “She’s such a bitch.” Wes nodded his head as he shook with silent cries. He rested his head on my shoulder and sighed. I let go of his hand and placed it on his cheek, letting out a faint sigh as well.
He broke up his cries by wheezing out, “I’m 19. Where’s this teenage dream everyone’s been fucking telling me about.”

a/n: hey guys! im sorry for missing an upload yesterday! i had a vry busy saturday, but here i am!! also, i got another fic idea so… whos pumped????
Tumblr media
It was time to get serious about songwriting.
It was the day after the Halloween party and I had a couple of lyrics written in my Notes app on my phone. I thought it would be a good idea to invite Trevor to go shopping with me to get a new songbook. It could possibly give me inspiration for a song other than ‘Autumn Leaves’ and that’s it. He picked me up from the apartment and drove us to the nearest craft store in the city.
“You’re not worried about being spotted by paparazzi?” I asked him as he parked the car.
“Nah,” he answered. “Are you?” I nodded my head and looked out to see the nearly empty parking lot. “Here, wear this.” He took his hat off and placed it on my head. I cracked a smile as I got out of the car.
We went inside and were greeted by an older lady working the register. I didn’t really know my place around the store and I was too anxious to ask. Trevor followed behind me which made it even worse since I had no clue where was what. I played it cool though and slowly walked past the aisles, searching for notebooks.
“Do you even know where to go?” he asked.
I scoffed, “Yeah! Obviously.” It was a blatant lie and he knew that.
He grabbed my hand, stopping me from wandering cluelessly. “Then you would know we just passed the notebook aisle.” My mouth opened, trying to find any excuse for that. He chuckled and said, “You’re so cute. Come on.”
My cheeks flushed red as I let out a little groan in response. He navigated me to the aisle, still holding onto my hand. There were a variety of notebooks for me to use. Lined, dotted, large, small. I didn’t even know where to start. “What about this one?” I laughed as I grabbed a notebook with a unicorn as the cover.
He nodded his head and chuckled, “It totally suits you.” It shouldn’t matter which one I got, it wasn’t going to be on display. I was only planning on showing my bandmates and Aubrey. “Are you actually gonna get it?”
I shrugged and answered, “Maybe. I’m very unpredictable.” After looking at all the other options, I settled on the unicorn one and we went to the register. I let go of Trevor’s hand and placed the notebook on the table for the person to scan.
“Did you find everything you need?” The girl’s voice trailed off as she looked up at me. Her face lit up as she let out a gasp, a smile forming on her face. “You’re Hayden Clarke and Trevor Zegras! Oh my God! Is it actually true you’re dating?! I’ve seen it all over my feed!”
Before I could give her an answer, Trevor stepped in and said, “Not yet, but we would be a cute couple.” My face was bright red as I nodded my head, too flustered to follow it up with a comment. The fan, whose name was Marie, told me the total. I reached for my pocket, but Trevor grabbed his wallet from his pocket first and pulled out his card.
“I thought I told you I would pay,” I told him as he inserted his card into the reader.
“You thought I was gonna let that happen?” he chuckled. “I’m treating you with my presence and my money.”
I rolled my eyes in response and grabbed the notebook. Marie gave us the receipt and asked, “Before you guys go, can I get a picture?”
“Yes, of course!” I answered. She squealed as she grabbed her phone from her apron pocket and took a selfie with Trevor and me in it. He had his arm wrapped around me with a smile that screamed *’I’m the luckiest man in the world’.*
“Thank you so much! I’m technically not supposed to have my phone out at work, but I would rather get a pic with you guys and lose my job!” Marie said as she stared at the picture on her phone. “Have a great day!”
🎶
When I got home, I sat at my desk and stared at the blank pages of my songbook. I had clearly forgotten how hard this was. I had a couple of songs in mind that I wanted our songs to have a similar vibe to, but even then, it was hard to come up with words. I even had my Notes app pulled up with the lyrics I had on there. I thought writing those exact same lyrics on paper would give me an idea, but I was wrong.
Why can’t an idea just come to me?
My bedroom door flew open and in came Weston, his face redder than a tomato with steam coming out of his ears. “I need to get this off my chest to someone!” Wes’s booming voice announced as he flopped onto my bed.
Bingo.
I swiveled around in my chair, notebook still in hand, and asked, “What’s wrong?” He wouldn’t say anything, he just growled and screamed random bullshit. “Wes. Take some deep breaths, I said with my voice low and calm, similar to one of a therapist’s. I took a couple of deep breaths to demonstrate and he soon followed suit.
Whenever Wes’s face became his normal shade, that’s when he began talking. “When I left at the party, I— uh,” he sputtered out. He struggled to maintain eye contact with me as he fidgeted with his hands. “I lied to you, Hayden. I lied and I went to Alejandro’s, not Val’s!”
My eyes widened as my eyebrows raised. “What?” I heard my voice slightly raised which caused Wes to flinch. “I’m sorry. Just… why?” Alejandro and Wes broke up months ago, why was he there? He lied about going to Valarie’s too? How often did he lie about that because it seemed too natural for comfort?
Tears prickled Wes’s eyes as he continued explaining, “After the breakup, we continued hooking up and it’s been going on for months, and I’m a terrible friend for lying, but I just can’t stop seeing him!” He couldn’t continue talking, he began crying too hard. His hand went over his mouth as he choked out, “I’m sorry!”
My expression softened as I got up from the chair and hugged him. “Oh, Wes,” I mumbled. He was shaking and grasping onto me desperately. I hated seeing Wes so vulnerable, especially to a douche like Alejandro. Maybe when I’m done writing this song I can find some time to kill Alejandro and then write a song about that too.
🎶
Wes finished writing and handed the journal back to me. During his emotional breakdown, Mal and Alex came home and heard loud hysterical crying. When they found out it was Wes and why he was crying, they shared the same concern as me. I wasn’t enough to calm him down, but Alex and Mal had a way with words. The best advice I could give him was to write his feelings down on a piece of paper, my songbook, so he could get everything off his chest. When he did that and handed it back to me, I asked him if I could use it for a song. He was hesitant at first but eventually agreed.
Later that night, I approached his door and knocked on it. I thought he wouldn’t hear my knocks since he blared loud music from his speaker. He opened the door a couple of seconds after I knocked and he seemed fine. “You wanna help me come up with lyrics?” I asked, holding up the unicorn songbook.
“I was gonna just leave it up to you but sure,” he said as he went back into his room and turned his music off. He came back with his phone and followed me to my room. I grabbed my keyboard and sat on my carpet since it was the only room I had for it was on the floor. Weston sat on the edge of my bed closest to me and crossed his leg over the other.
I pulled out my phone and pulled up the voice memo app and began recording us. “Alright, it is currently Sunday, October 22nd,” I said as I turned on my keyboard. “I’m here with Weston to come up with lyrics for his song.”
His eyebrows knitted together as he asked, “My song?” I nodded my head and smiled. “Hayden, I’m flattered.”
I giggled as I flipped to the page where Weston scribbled his feelings down. I noticed he wrote *’bad idea’* all over the paper. I hummed as I looked up at him. *I can work with this*. “What kind of vibe are you going for?” I asked him as I tapped my finger against the paper. “Fast? Slow? Upbeat?”
He clicked his tongue as he thought about it for a moment. He tapped his hand against his thigh loudly as he said, “I’m thinking this tempo.” I nodded my head as I set up the metronome on my keyboard, mirroring his pace. I now had the metronome set for 130 being the tempo. “You wanna get the lyrics first or the instrumental?”
“Whatever you think works, it’s your song,” I answered.
Weston decided to start with lyrics since he assumed it would be better if we came up with the instrumental with Mal and Alex. I read what Weston wrote on the paper to him and asked, “You got anything in mind?”
Wes hummed in thought. I looked back at my phone and saw that the voice memo was almost 10 minutes long. “The only thing I can think of is making ‘bad idea’ the title or something,” he said. “I wrote down that I was drunk most of the times I went over there. What if we say something about *’I’m ou*t *right now and I’m drunk’*?”
I hummed and wrote it down in the notebook staring at it. Something about that line was incomplete to me. “How about we make it angrier?” I proposed. Wes was confused by what I meant, so I hummed the lyric. *“But I’m out right now, and I’m all fucked up,”* I sang.
Wes gasped as he enthusiastically clapped his hands. “Yes! Yes! Yes!” I wrote that down on the paper and we continued going, doing the same process until we had a song.
The process was long, the recording lasting an hour and a half. We had our lyrics, we had our tempo, and all we needed was an instrumental.
🎶
“Okay, it is Monday, October 23rd,” I stated. It was Wes, Mal, Alex, and I all in the living room with my keyboard and Alex’s acoustic guitar. “This is *’Bad Idea, Right?’*s instrumental, I guess?” I giggled a bit. All of last night while I was supposed to be sleeping, I was on my MacBook making demos on GarageBand. “So this is the first option I have.” I clicked play on my MacBook and let it play for them.
Mal and Alex liked it, but Wes wasn’t satisfied and I could tell by the look on his face. “I think it needs to be more aggressive,” he critiqued.
“I knew you would say that, so I made another demo. This is instrumental 2,” I said as I clicked play again. It had a louder bass part, a better drum solo, and an absolutely shredding guitar solo for Alex.
Alex’s smile grew as he listened to it, his nose scrunching. “This shit is hard! I think that one’s a winner!” he exclaimed.
“It’s only because you have a solo,” Mal teased before she turned over to me. “But it is a winner for sure.” She winked.
I looked up at Weston to hear what his opinions were on the instrumental. He was nodding his head with a smug smile on his face. “I want this song to get the number 1 spot on Billboard and play on every radio station just so I can say that this song is about Alejandro and have him feel humiliated like he made me feel,” he taunted. “This song will be amazing.”
“Track 2 was a hit,” I told the recording. “I’ll break up the song by your parts and send them for you to listen to and work on.” I stopped the recording and smiled. This was the fun part of songwriting, coming up with the instrumental with my friends. It was such a bonding experience for us, especially when I wasn’t writing only about myself.
🎶
I received a call from Trevor as soon as I stepped out of the shower. I quickly answered it and put him on speaker, “Hey! Caught me at the perfect time.”
He chuckled, “I’m glad. How was your day, Hayden?” I heard the car door slam from the end of the phone and his car staring up.
“I was finally able to write a song,” I said as I wrapped my hair in a towel and placed it on my head. I threw on my maroon robe and went back to my bedroom to grab some comfy clothes to change into. “Wes, Mal, and Alex like it, so now we gotta present it to Aubrey.”
“Would I be able to hear it?” Trevor asked with an obvious grin on his face.
I laughed, “On the radio, you can. I keep demos to myself and my bandmates.” I grabbed a pair of *’Mario Kart’* boxers and an oversized thrifted t-shirt. “You don’t get special treatment, Trev.”
“Damn, I thought we had something, Hayden. I’m really hurt,” he joked. “Even after I bought you that unicorn songbook.”
I rolled my eyes as I slipped into my clothes. “Whatever,” I scoffed. “How was your day, Trevor?”
He let out a long exhale before answering, “Long.” I could hear the exhaustion in his voice. “We lost our game yesterday, so we had an excruciating practice.”
I had forgotten to watch that game, I was so focused on working on our parts. “Oh, shit. I should’ve watched it. Sorry, Trev.”
“No, you and I both lucked out,” he said with a laugh. “You would’ve gotten the ick or something because of how bad I played. Not to mention the interview questions Victoria had me answering about you and me. It wasn’t even about hockey, now I know how Travis Kelce feels.”
“Being compared to Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift is insane,” I joked. I had seen so much feed about Travis and Taylor and the amount of coverage both stars are getting. The amount of screen time she would get during Cheifs games was unreal, and I only know that because Mal started watching football for Travis. “What kind of questions were they?”
“Well, a lot of dating stuff like *’Oh, how long have you two been seeing each other?’, ‘Will she be at any other games anytime soon?’* and *’Have the teammates approved?’* which the last one is yes, all my teammates love you, Hayden.”
My cheeks blared a bright red color as I flopped onto my bed. I giggled, “How much do you talk about me, Trevor?”
“A lot,” he said. “I know I seem chill about it and everything, but I am self-aware of how good of a girl I’ve managed to score.” I covered my mouth with my hand, my eyes wide and my cheeks red. James never talked about me like this, let alone any man who I’ve had an interest in. “Hayden, you’re a real dime and I’m so lucky to even be in your eyeline.” I didn’t even know how to respond to it other than squealing, of course forgetting to mute myself. “You good, Hayden?” he asked with a concerned chuckle.
“Yes, yes! Sorry!” I apologized, now blushing with embarrassment. “It’s just I’ve never had anyone talk about me like this.”
“Well, let me be the first then,” Trevor rasped. That made me die dead. My mouth hung wide open in response to that. The way his voice sounded with that little rasp. “Sorry, I was screaming a lot during practice today.”
*Keep it like that.* “No, you’re fine! I sound like that after shows too,” I said. I did my best to keep my voice steady and not sound like a stuttering mess who couldn’t get any words out.
Trevor finally made it home, but instead of hanging up, he just continued talking to me all night long. We jumped from topic to topic, going from hilarious to deep and emotional.
“My dad cheated on my mom when I was in sophomore year with one of his receptionists,” I said as I typed out some random words that I thought would be good for a song. “What about the line *’Heartbreak is the national anthem, we sing it proudly’*?”
I could hear the water from his shower running. “I like that, it’s catchy, but your dad cheated on your mom? I assume they’re not together anymore.”
“You would be right, Sherlock,” I joked. “I assume you’re about to show.”
“You would be right, Sherlock,” he mocked. I rolled my eyes and laughed. “I know you and your mom are close since I met her at the party a couple of years ago. Jacob is my dad’s old roommate from college. I find that really funny.”
“No, shit really?” I gasped. “That’s so odd. Maybe you were stalking me, to begin with.”
“Never would I ever do that to you, Hayden!” His voice became echoed as he stepped into his shower. Jamie nor Leo were home yet according to him, they were out with a couple of other teammates, but Trevor insisted on going home and winding down before the game tomorrow. Who knew I was a part of his winding-down routine?
“But yeah, I haven’t really talked to him since I turned 18.” I shifted in my bed and turned over to my nightstand to grab my remote. I turned on Spotify on my TV and turned on some relaxing jazz music. “I’m definitely a mama’s girl,” I said.
“Yeah, makes sense.” It was silent for a moment, so I turned up my music a bit. *’It’s Only A Paper Moon’* by Ella Fitzgerald. “What’re you listening to?”
I looked up from the phone and back at the song and answered, “Oh, I’m listening to jazz music. Ella Fitzgerald is my mom’s favorite jazz singer.”
“Oh yeah, my mom likes her too. She puts her on every Christmas.” The shower finally turned off and I heard as Trevor stepped out of the shower. My mind ventured off into uncharted areas I never thought would’ve been in my mind. “I have a game tomorrow sadly, but maybe I’ll pop up on Wednesday or Thursday to see you.”
“I would be flattered,” I replied with a smile on my face. I just really wanted him to take me out for a nice dinner sometime, at least to brunch or something. I liked constantly hanging out with him and stuff, but I wanted to take it to the next level. I was just too scared to ask. It wasn’t long for Trevor to fall asleep on the phone with me, his faint snoring causing me to giggle.
I heard from the other end of the phone his bedroom door open. “Oh, boo. He’s asleep,” a male’s voice complained. “But his phone’s still on.” Footsteps approached the side of Trevor’s bed. “Oh! It’s Hayden!” Though he attempted to whisper, he was still the loudest whisperer I heard.
“Hey,” I said with a giggle. I knew what Jamie sounded like and this wasn’t him. The only other person I could think of being in the room this late. “Are you Leo?”
“Yeah, hi! Sorry for interrupting, I was gonna prank him,” he confessed. “Have a good night, Hayden!”
“You too, Leo,” I replied with a small smile. I heard his footsteps recede from the bedroom and the door shut leaving me with my music and Trevor’s snores. I finally just placed my phone on the nightstand and closed my own eyes, falling asleep as well.

I was glad when Wes said he wanted to do his own costume and Mal and Alex wanted to do their own matching costumes. I had been planning my costume for months now, possibly even a year. I saw girls dress up as Patrick Bateman last year, and they looked so hot. Since August, I have been collecting the items I needed for my costume. Now it was time to assemble it all together.
It was an hour before the party, and I was finishing up my makeup in the bathroom before I put my costume on. I put on some cherry-flavored lip gloss before ruffling my hair slightly. I grabbed the bottle of SFX blood and made my way back into the bathroom. "Weston! Get your ass in here and help me!" I screamed as I poured the blood into a spray bottle.
"What do you want?!" he whined as he entered my bathroom, adjusting his black tie. He decided he wanted to be the Onceler very last minute, which meant he rushed to Amazon to get everything. His green blazer was the perfect shade of green, perfectly matching his hat.
I handed him the spray bottle and explained to him as I buttoned up my poncho over an oversized old shirt, "I need you to spray me with blood. I need it mostly up here on my head and on my poncho. Just make sure not to get my suit, I wanna wear this again." He nodded along with what I was instructing him to do before I stepped into my shower. "Alright, go!"
"Do I just spray it on your face?" he asked, his eyebrows knitted together. I nodded my head aggressively and held up my chin.
He shrugged his shoulders and said, "Close your eyes." I did as he said and squeezed my eyes shut. Without any warning, the cold spritz of SFX makeup sprayed my face. My face scrunched up as I felt a chill run down my back. "Cold?"
I nodded my head, scared of getting the blood in my mouth. He finally finished spraying my face and went down to the poncho, causing me to open my eyes. He unscrewed the cap and just splashed me with the blood. I screamed before letting out a loud laugh. "Thanks, Wes!"
He placed the spray bottle on the sink before making his way out of the bathroom. "Of course. Just hurry up and get dressed," he yelled out to me from my bedroom door. "Wait! Do you have the address?!"
"Yeah, who's driving?" I asked, taking the poncho off and draping it over the curtain rod.
"You!" He then shut my bedroom door. Why did I always have to be the DD? I just wanted to get wasted at this party tonight, but also I have a lot to lose with Trevor. How I act when I'm drunk is something that my closest friends will only see.
I finally changed into my costume — it consisted of a black cropped tank top, a black mini skirt, a white button-up, a blazer, long black socks, and Converses. I grabbed my Bluetooth headset and let it hang from my neck. This is perfect. I grabbed my phone from the edge of my bed and brought it back into the bathroom with me. I took a couple of mirror selfies which I would post later.
There was a faint knock on my door, signaling to me that it was Alex. "Come in!" I yelled as I grabbed my purse from my desk chair. My door opened and there stood Alex dressed up as Nick Wilde leaning against my doorway.
He had the perfect amount of sass to dominate the role of Nick Wilde and Mal had the optimistic personality that Judy Hopps also had. "You about ready to go?" he cocked his head to the side, leaning it against the door frame.
"Yup," I beamed as I grabbed my pheromone perfume and rolled it on my wrists and my neck. "Waiting on me?" "Yup," he answered, "Like usual." I shot a dirty look, narrowing my eyes and lowering my eyebrows. He cracked a smile and pushed himself off. "Let's go. You're driving."
Like usual.
🎶
Trevor had given me specific instructions on where to park which was by his car. I recognized it from the night he gave me a ride home and pulled in behind it. I put the car in park and turned it off. "We gotta bit of walking to do," I told the group leading them to let out a harmony of groans. "At least we'll be able to easily leave!" I argued as I grabbed my purse from the floorboard and got out of the car.
Once everyone was out, I locked the car and looked down at my phone which said it would be a 1 minute walk. Wes's hand brushed against my back as he said, "Lead the way, Hayden." I did just that, guiding us to Chase's house. I prayed that I put the right address Trevor told me into Waze.
For me, it felt like less than a minute since I was navigating the entire time, but the rest of them complained — especially Wes. I knew it was the right house when I saw the strobing lights and the Halloween decorations scattered on the lawn in a frat house manner.
"Holy shit!" Alex exclaimed as he took in the sight of Chase's house. When I saw his face, the only thing I could compare it to was the same expression a kid had stepping into a candy store with unlimited amounts of money.
"It looks better than I expected!" Mal beamed.
"Looks exactly how I thought it would," Wes said. I couldn't help but agree with him.
I pulled out my phone and called Trevor to let him know we were outside the house. When he answered, I could barely hear him over the blaring party music. "Hey! We just arrived. Can you come out here?" I asked him. I couldn't even hear his answer, I heard the 'Chug! Chug! Chug!' in the background. I hung up and looked at the three before telling them, "I think he'll meet us out here."
I saw Trevor stumble out of the house and yell out to us, "Hey guys!" He jogged toward us and wrapped his arm around me. I was overcome with the smell of his strong cologne, but it smelt really good. Kind of musky and umber? "Come on in!"
He dragged me into the house meanwhile the others followed after us. "What's your costume supposed to be?" I asked Trevor, looking up at him. When we stepped foot into the house, I was instantly engulfed by the loud bass coming from the speakers scattered around the house.
He scoffed, "Isn't it obvious? Men in Black! Though my other half isn't here." I furrowed my eyebrows after hearing him say that. "Oh! Jamie's also dressed up with me!" I nodded my head and smiled widely. "You want anything to drink?" Trevor asked, leaning in close to my ear so I could actually hear him.
"Yeah, sure!" I shouted in response, When I looked back to where my group was supposed to be, but they were gone again — abandoning me like they did at the game. Trevor then led me away from the door and dragged me to wherever the hell the drinks were. He knew the layout of the house, telling me that he had been to parties here before. He might even just lounge around here with Chase.
The sound of the crowd died down a bit when we entered the kitchen. It was huge, but only a few people resided here. "What do you want?" His arm snaked off of me as he pointed down at the coolers.
"Is there Coke in there?" I asked. He popped open the blue cooler and dug through there in search of a Coke can. He made it to the bottom and pulled one out, holding it out to me. "What a gentleman," I teased as I took it from his hand, popping the tab open.
He chuckled as he grabbed himself a Modelo can and cracked the tab open. "Cheers," he said as he held up his drink. I clanked my can against his and took a sip. His eyes looked past me and a small smile grew on his face. He looked back down at me and asked, "Would you like to meet my friends and the party host?"
"I thought I already met all your friends," I joked, taking a sip afterward.
His mouth gaped open as he playfully shoved me. "I'm offended you think Jamie is my only friend," he snipped. "I was gonna introduce you to Charli, Dixie, and Chase!"
I laughed in response and nodded my head, "Yeah sure!" He smiled, taking my hand in his and intertwining our fingers. A smile swept across my face as the blush crept to my cheeks. He guided me through the kitchen and to the back sliding door which was open. There was a pool with people scattered all over the place and beer pong tables set up.
Charli, Dixie, and Chase were by one watching their friends play. "Yo!" He whistled catching the attention of the three of them.
Chase's face lit up when he spotted Trevor. "Big T!" he whooped as he dapped him up, pulling him into the hug all guys do.
Trevor greeted Charli and Dixie differently, giving them one-armed hugs. He then came back to my side and draped his arm around me. "This is Hayden, the one you specifically requested." He winked at Chase before giving me the floor to introduce myself.
"Hi!" I said before reaching out to shake his hand.
"Man, fuck that! Come here!" Chase pulled me into a hug, which I wasn't expecting. When he embraced me, that's when I could smell the reeking stench of alcohol.
He let go of me and I introduced myself to Charli and Dixie. Charli pointed at me when I introduced myself as she said, "Your guys' music is so good! Literally, my favorite song ever is definitely 'Mastermind'!"
I felt the corners of my mouth turn up as I giggled a bit, "Wait, really?" I've never heard anyone mention anything other than Betty before. It felt more validating whenever someone famous said they liked your music. "I didn't think many people knew that song."
"Are you kidding?!" she laughed. "It's amazing! It's on almost every playlist I have!"
I looked up at Trevor and smiled, "I already like your friends. Seems like they know a lot more about Pink Slip than you." I gave him a playful nudge. "What's your favorite song anyway?"
"It's obviously Betty," Trevor said as he shook me a little, "but that's because it's the first time I laid my eyes on you."
"Aw," Dixie smiled. "You guys are so cute. Trevor is a real gentleman."
"I try my best," he chuckled. His hand slowly grazed against my back, making its way to my waist. He pulled me closer to him, making sure every guy at this party knew we were seeing each other. I glanced up at him and smiled a bit, resting my head on his chest.
🎶
I pushed through the crowd, lost like a stray dog. I had decided to go to the bathroom which was the worst choice I could've possibly made. Not only had I lost Trevor but my friends were nowhere to be spotted, and I was growing anxious. I said hi to those who said hi to me, but would immediately continue my efforts to find anyone I knew. Though I was physically at the party, my mind was mentally somewhere else. I wasn't aware of my surroundings causing to ram right into someone, nearly spilling my drink. I looked up at the person with an apologetic look on my face, but it melted away, and I felt a relieved smile slip onto my face. "Jamie!"
He looked down at me and smiled back, "Hey, Hayden! I was wondering where you guys were." He then looked around and frowned, "Where's Trevor... and everyone else?"
I shook my head, "No, I lost them all. Do you know where Wes, Mal, and Alex could be?"
Jamie hummed and again looked around. "I thought I saw them taking shots with a couple of other people earlier, but I'll help you look!" He turned to his friends who he talked to and excused himself.
The two of us set off to go look for Alex, Mal, and Wes. "Thanks again," I said, "For the invite and everything." I took a sip of my Coke and looked up at Jamie. "Can I ask you something?"
"Yeah, what's up?" he asked, still searching around.
I sighed and looked down at my drink. "When will Trevor actually ask me out on a date?"
He let out a long sigh as he began to answer, "I know I'm close with him and all, but I have no idea. I'm being really honest." That answer disappointed me a bit, but what he said next made me feel better. "Hayden, all I'm gonna say is this. He's not shut up about you since the night after the Sharks game and he really likes you, I know that. Just expect him to ask you out soon, alright?" I nodded my head as a smile spread across my face. My heart rate accelerated as I took a sip of my drink. "There they are!" He pointed to Mal, Alex, and Wes who sat on the couch with a a few TikTokers.
🎶
I was powered by 3 Cokes and a rocket pop-flavored Prime. I was pulled into the living room, which was now a dance floor, by Mal, Alex, and Wes — who were all drunker than a skunk. I was asked to take several pictures with people while in the middle of a large crowd. A dance circle formed around Mal and Alex while they danced, bringing all eyes onto them.
Wes and I were laughing and watching from the side, both of us recording on our phones. In a split second, Wes's demeanor changed as he stopped filming and pulled up his messages. I couldn't see who he was texting, but he said, "Hey, I'm gonna head out."
"Wait, what's going on? You doing alright?" I grabbed his wrist loosely, but he pulled away.
He shook his head and flashed a false smile, "Val's just not taking her break up good, so I'm gonna head over there. I got an Uber, don't worry about me." Valarie was one of Weston's friends from high school who recently broke up with her partner of about a year and Weston has been going over there a lot recently. I checked my phone and saw it was 2 in the morning, why would she be asking for him at this time?
Before I was able to question him any further, he gave me a hug before pushing through the crowd toward the front door. I went after him, but when I was able to make my way out of the crowd, he had disappeared. I stood there alone with both concern and confusion pulsing through my stream. The expression he had when he got the text wasn't one from an Uber driver. It was more personal, but I didn't know who it could've been from.
"Hayden!" I turned around when my name was called and saw Trevor approaching. He had a pair of shades on and his hair was messier than it was earlier. "There you are! I was looking for you all over."
I smiled a bit as I replied, "I couldn't find you after I left the bathroom so I ran into Jamie and we went to find Mal, Wes, and Alex." Though it shouldn't have been his business and I was probably overreacting, I still decided to tell him about Wes leaving. "It's weird because Wes just got an Uber and left."
Trevor's eyebrows furrowed as he asked, "Did he say why?" I shrugged my shoulders since I didn't even know if he was being honest with me. "That really sucks. Where's Alex and Mal? Do they know?"
I gestured over to the loud commotion which was the dance circle. "Over there," I laughed. "It's whatever."
Trevor adjusted his loose tie, a couple of buttons of his shirt undone. He looked so good, I just wanted to rip it all off. Woah. Calm down, I thought to myself. "You want someone to dance with? I'm not that good at dancing, but I'd say I'm pretty good company." He got closer to me, before taking off his sunglasses and placing them on the top of my head.
I let out a little giggle and rolled my eyes. "You are so corny, Trevor!" He raised his eyebrows, a smile forming on his face as he awaited my response. "Okay! Fine!"
'Grove St Party' was playing over the speaker, the whole house screaming the lyrics. Trevor was right when he said he wasn't good at dancing. He pulled out dance moves similar to ones you would see a dad doing at a wedding reception. I cackled as he did so, trying to keep up with whatever dance he did since I couldn't do any better. I watched as his face lit up seeing how effortlessly he could make me laugh.
"You know," he started, "Hayden, you look really good tonight!" Heat rushed to my cheeks as I did my best to dismiss it, but he kept going. "I'm serious, you are so beautiful, Hayden."
"Well, you're not bad-looking yourself." He grabbed my hand and pulled me closer, causing my smile to fade. Is he about to kiss me? At a party was the worst spot to do it, but if he wanted to I wasn't opposed to it.
"Hayden!" Alex yelled to me. Great. I looked over at him and saw him holding onto Mal by her waist. She was the most wasted out of all of us and her face was starting to turn green. "Mal just threw up, it's time to bail."
I looked up at Trevor who looked disappointed. Maybe he was trying to kiss me. "I'm sorry, thank you so much for the invite!" I pulled away from his touch and added, "Please tell Chase I said thanks for the invite!"
"I'll walk you guys to the door," he offered.

I planned on using today all the way up until Sunday as the ’Calm before the Storm’ period — the storm being writing 10 original songs as a band. When we got home from our meeting with Aubrey, I went straight to my room and changed into more comfortable clothes so I could take a nap. An oversized tourist sweatshirt from a gift shop I got while we were in New York for our tour and some boxer shorts I found at Target a couple of years ago. I buried myself under my comforter and shut my eyes, letting in a long relaxing inhale.
Finally, I thought, I long awaited na—
My phone began to ring and vibrate against the nightstand next to my bed. I let out a long groan, not in the mood to talk to anyone. Mal, if it’s you I’m going to kill y—
It was Trevor.
My frustration melted into a weird excitement. Maybe I could postpone my nap to talk to him for a minute. I answered the call and said, “Hello?”
“Hey, Hay,” he then snickered, “Get it? ‘Hey,’ and I call you ‘Hay’ because your name’s Hayden.”
It was so corny and random, that I let out a small giggle. “Yes, Trevor. I get it.” I lay flat on my back, resting my head on my pillow. “What’re you calling for?”
“To check up on you,” he answered. “Why? Do you not appreciate my calls?”
I laughed a bit, “No! People just normally text, y’know?”
Trevor scoffed, “Well, I wanted to hear your voice.” I felt my cheeks redden as a simpered smile swept across my face. He had a way with words, or maybe it was his confidence. Whatever it was, it was working to charm me. “So, how was your day?”
Part of me didn’t really want to share the stress I was about to be under whenever I had to start the writing process, but there was something so alluring about him that made my thoughts pour right out of my mouth. “Well, I went down to Hillister to talk to Aubrey with the band,” I started. “Turns out she wants a new album and, of course, I naively insisted on writing our own music.” I could hear him laugh on the other line, causing me to laugh as well. “I thought it was a good idea at the time!”
“I think that’s a good thing, Hayden.” His words were so reassuring, it made me feel comforted even while I was in my own bed just talking to him on the phone. I met this man yesterday, well *re-*met, and I already feel a deep connection to him. I couldn’t tell whether it was a bad thing or a good thing. “Maybe the park can give you some inspiration tomorrow.”
I rolled my eyes and let out a small laugh, “God, no! I don’t wanna focus on any writing tomorrow.” I wanted to enjoy my time hanging out with Trevor, Mal, and Jamie tomorrow, not worrying about what words rhyme with that. “Plus, I don’t think you want to see my method of songwriting.”
Trevor chuckled, “I could help.” I erupted into a fit of laughter which led him to laugh along with me. “No! Hear me out!” When he grew quiet, I assumed he was coming up with something stupid in his head. “Something about Pearson Park staring at a crushed-up leave,” he said, though he spoke with a flat tone I could tell he was smiling. “What rhymes with leaves?”
“Wishing that you didn’t leave?” I suggested.
“You just rhymed leave with leave,” he laughed. ”It’s harder than you think, Trevor!” I covered my eyes with my hand as I laughed. “I don’t want to dread over lyrics anymore. How was your day?”
“Meh,” he answered, “I had practice today and I kind of just went to the bar with a couple of teammates.” I nodded my head while listening to what he said, chiming in with ’mhm’ occasionally. “I’ve just been waiting for tomorrow all week. It was fun hanging out with you after the game a couple of nights ago.”
I felt the butterflies swarm my stomach hearing how much reuniting with me meant to him. I wanted to squeal, but instead, I attempted to keep my voice steady as I answered him, “Yeah. I’m excited for Sunday too.” My voice still couldn’t hide the fat smile stretched across my face.
“Oh, shit,” Trevor said as I heard the sound of buzzing from his end of the phone. “I have to take this call, but I’ll call you sometime tomorrow, alright?”
It caught me off guard at the sudden shift of tone, but I brushed it off. “Yeah, of course,” I said. That sounded too enthusiastic for my liking, but I had already talked. “Bye, Trevor.”
“Bye, Hayden.” The line disconnected. I pulled the phone away from my ear and placed it back on the nightstand where it rested originally. How was I supposed to fall asleep now after Trevor gave me that schoolgirl crush thrill? Maybe I could try and shut my eyes for a bit and pray that I’ll fall asleep, but as soon as I did that, I groaned again.
I forgot to tell Mal.
I didn’t feel like getting out of bed, I was in a warm cozy cocoon made of various blankets and stuffed animals. “Mal!” I screamed, trying my best to catch her attention. “Come in here!” My throat strained from how loud I yelled, but how else would she have heard me?
My door opened shortly after and there crept in Mal who looked as if she had just gotten called into the principal’s office. I was too tired to interrogate her about whatever she may have done to warrant me possibly being angry with her. “You're coming with me to Pearson Park Sunday,” I said as more of a demand than a request. I had already told Trevor that she had agreed and I hadn’t even run it through her yet.
Mal’s shitting bricks expression shifted to a look of annoyance in an instant. “But I planned on binging Criminal Minds all day with Alex all day,” she whined.
I knew that the next to come out of my mouth would cause a reaction, excitement I assumed. “Trevor invited me to hang out with him at Pearson Park Sunday with Jamie and I thought you—”
“JAMIE DRYSDALE?!” she shrieked, causing my ears to ring more than they did after being in a packed arena Tuesday night. I nodded my head, too scared to verbally answer her. “HAYDEN ARE YOU SERIOUS??! I WOULD LOVE TO COME!” Seeing the frightened look on my face due to her excessive screaming and jumping around my room, she took a couple of deep breaths as she gave me a more sophisticated answer. “As your friend, it’s my duty to accompany you while meeting two men you don’t know.” When I gave her a thumbs up in response, she again squealed and rushed over to the bed.
She pounced on me and tackled me with a hug, causing me to let out a wheeze in pain. “Please, calm down!” I begged her as she got off of me and made her way to leave my room.
“I love you, Hayden! You don’t know how much this means to me!” She then skipped out of my room, singing with joy as she shut the door behind her. I was very well aware of how much this meant to her, but I wasn’t aware of how much it meant to her and how she would react.
Finally, I could try to get some sleep if I ignored Maliyah’s muffled yells through the walls as she explained to Weston or Alex about her excitement.
🎶
In the days leading up to Mal’s official meet-up with Jamie and Trevor, she didn’t stop talking about it. There were a variety of topics she would talk about that somehow led back to Sunday. “Do you like this top?” Mal asked after breaking into my room, holding up a sage green halter top.
I was on the phone with Trevor when she came into the room, so I said, “Hang on, Trev.” I didn’t bother muting myself since I didn’t care if he heard our conversation, it was just about a shirt after all. “I think it’s cute.”
“Okay, good because I was thinking about wearing it Sunday,” she said with a smile on her face. “Do you know what you’re wearing yet?”
I shrugged my shoulders and answered, “Just something casual.”
Mal’s vacant hand rested on her hip as she slightly popped it out. “You can’t just dress casual for your date,” she huffed.
“She’s right,” Trevor agreed. I forgot that I had placed him on speaker mode, so Mal was able to hear him loud and clear. “You can’t dress casually on our date.”
My cheeks immediately flushed with embarrassment, Mal’s hand flying over her mouth as she mouthed ’I’m so sorry!’ I completely ignored her and just responded to Trevor instead, “Trevor, you didn’t say it was a date,” I said in an obviously sarcastic tone.
“We can easily change that if you like,” he offered. My eyes just about popped out of my head as my cheeks became hotter than I thought they humanly could. Mal squealed for me and rushed out of my room. I just dismissed it with a laugh, not saying yes or no since I wasn’t opposed to the idea.
Mal settled on the halter top with a pair of black bell-bottom jeans. She had her hair up into a clip that was similar to the green halter and tied it together with a pair of black Converses. Even though I knew Mal was partially joking when she said ’I shouldn’t dress casually for my date’ and possibly so was Trevor, they were right. I needed to dress better than just sweatpants and a hoodie.
I had landed on a black lacy mid-drift tank top, a jean miniskirt, and a maroon zip-up hoodie. I paired it with a pair of ruffly socks and Mary Janes. It was warmer than I thought it would be, but my outfit still fit the autumn weather aesthetic.
Trevor had let me know that he and Jamie were waiting by the tennis courts — located on the other side of the park from our current location. Though it was annoying to walk that far in a pair of Dr. Martens, it gave Mal some time to take in the reality of her situation. She was now absolutely freaked out, launching into a full panic. “What if they think I’m annoying, Hayden? What if I talk too much? What if I don’t talk enough for their liking?” The nerves oozed out of her pores as she rambled.
Hearing her go on and on about the ’What ifs was starting to affect me. “Mal,” I finally cut her off, “you need to relax. If Trevor is able to put up with me, then he’ll possibly be able to deal with you.” She gasped, a smile breaking through before she playfully hit me in the arm. I giggled in response, shoving her away. “In all seriousness! They’re going to like you and if they don’t, then I’ll stop seeing Trevor.”
Mal’s arms crossed her chest while she rolled her eyes. “I highly doubt that,” she replied.
“No, it’s not,” I answered. “Bros before hoes.”
A snicker broke through as her nose crinkled. “I never want you to say that again.”
All I could reply with was, “Fair.”
After what felt like a mile, I could finally see the tennis courts. Relief washed over my body even more than when Mal stopped her nervous rambles. When we got closer, I could see Trevor and Jamie sitting on a bench by the entrance gate talking to each other. They were too lost in their conversation to even notice our silhouettes in the distance.
I yelled out to him, “Trevor!” His head perked up as his head spun in my direction. Jamie’s attention also shifted to us, a faint grin appearing on his own face.
They both got up from the bench and made their way toward us, Trevor leading the way. He greeted me with a hug and said, “Hi, Hayden.” He held me for a couple of seconds before letting go and turning to Maliyah. “Hey, Mal. I’ve heard a lot of things about you. Good things of course!” Instead of holding out his hand to shake, he gave her a one-armed hug.
She was grinning from ear to ear as she responded, “I’ve heard good things about you too. Many good things.” She glanced over at me and gave me a wink. She let go of him and turned to Jamie, who stood with his hands in his pockets. “Hi, I’m Maliyah! It’s a pleasure to meet you, Jamie!”
He expressed a shy smile as he sheepishly held out his hand. “Also nice to meet you.” He looked over at me and greeted me with a nod. “Hi, Hayden.”
“Hi,” I gave him a small wave.
“Trevor never shuts up about you around the house,” he teased the other.
My heart skipped a beat as I glanced up at Trevor, who was blushing. “You guys live together?” I shifted the topic so I could learn more about Jamie. I also didn’t want Trevor to grow gradually more embarrassed.
“Oh, yeah!” Trevor answered. “We live in a condo with our other teammate, Leo.”
The small talk continued for a couple of minutes until we all agreed that standing around outside of the tennis court wasn’t the ideal lounging spot. “Alright, guys! As much as I love hanging around this vacant tennis court, I’m sure there are other things we can do,” he joked, following the comment with a small chuckle. “Where should we go?”
Trevor’s eyes landed on me which somehow led the other two to follow suit. I was the worst at making decisions which is why I was a little aggravated. “Let’s see…” My voice trailed off and I let out a thoughtful hum. There was everything nearby, and I couldn’t even come up with a single place. “I used to work by that Starbucks down the street. Y’know, the one on North?”
Jamie nodded, “Yeah. I’m down for that.”
Trevor then nodded his head as well. “Alright, we could probably walk there. It’s not too far, right?”
I plastered a fake smile on my face and replied, “Not at all.” The walk from our parking spot to the tennis courts was further than the walk to Starbucks, that wasn’t the problem. The problem was that my Mary Janes would make the walk feel even longer than it was because my feet would be in agonizing pain. I should’ve worn my Converse instead.
I hid my pain as we walked down the sidewalk, occasionally crushing dead leaves that fell from the park trees. We turned onto the sidewalk next to the main road and joined the other pedestrians. We weren’t being recognized, which made me feel like I had my old life again. It was kind of a relief.
We walked in pairs, Mal and Jamie in the front and Trevor and I behind them. During Trevor and I’s comfortable silence, I listened in on Mal and Jamie’s conversation about hockey and her essentially fangirling. “My dad was a big Ducks fan when I was growing up, but I’m pretty sure every dad is here in Anaheim,” Mal joked with him.
Jamie laughed and looked down at her, “Yeah. That and teenage girls on TikTok. The number of edits I’ve seen of myself to ’Agora Hills’ by Doja Cat on my feed is insane. I didn’t know I was popular like that.” For being an NHL player, he was really humble.
“Are you kidding? You’re my favorite defenseman!” Mal beamed at him, causing a shy smile to form on his face as his cheeks tinted a faint pink color. It was cute. Mal’s worries had clearly dissolved into nothing as her bubbly personality took control.
I looked back up at Trevor, who also watched the interaction between the two in front of us. He noticed that I had focused my attention back on him and met my gaze, flashing me a smile. “I’m really glad you agreed to come,” he said.
“So am I,” I replied. “I would’ve been crazy to say no. You’re irresistible.” He reminded me of a puppy. It didn’t matter what they did, they still made your heart melt with their glittery eyes.
Trevor’s eyes were definitely my kryptonite, his smile being a close runner-up. There was a momentary staring contest between us until he broke the silence as he said, “Oh! You wanna see the pic of us from that first gig?”
He really kept the picture after all this time? How was one able to not fall head over heels for him? “Duh!” He whipped his phone out of his pocket and typed in the passcode, aggressively scrolling through the pictures on his phone.
It wasn’t until he had his arm up I noticed the tattoos. I didn’t see it when we first hung out since he was wearing a long sleeve shirt and he never really talked about them. “I really like your tattoos,” I complimented him. ’I really like your tattoos’ translated to ’Your tattoos are so attractive and are a major turn-on for me’ in my language.
He glanced away from his phone and checked out his arm, looking over the tattoos. “Thanks! They’re my most prized possession other than my massive arms.” I shook my head as I rolled my eyes, a giggle falling from my lips. He wasn’t wrong though, his arms were like cannons. He went back to his phone and continued on his hunt, his eyes squinted before his face lit up. “There it is!” I adverted my gaze from his biceps back up to his face.
He handed me the phone with the selfie of us on his screen. In the picture. Trevor had his arm around me as I held up the peace sign. All this time, I had relied on my memory to remember what he looked like when I first saw his interview. Seeing it here in person, the differences between him then and now were massive.
In this picture, he had a haircut similar to a little boy’s and just had such a young look to him. Trevor now, on the other hand, looked more like a man. He was far more filled out and had grown his hair out longer. I could even see some hair growing on his chin.
My mouth popped wide open when I finally got to my old self. “Oh my God!” I gasped as I zoomed in close to my face, disgusted by the makeup that caked onto my face. I wore rose pink blush on my face which made me look like a clown, crooked thick eyeliner, an eyebrow slit on my right eyebrow. “I look awful in that!” I then looked at my hair, still it’s natural brown color, which had choppy layers and patchy blonde highlights. I didn’t know how to feel knowing that he was attractive to me when I looked like that.
“Don’t say that,” he said as he took the phone from my hands. “You just look different than you do now. Though I will say the blonde is much prettier, not like you weren’t before.”
“Trevor!” I squealed. “Stop, you’re actually making me blush.” I couldn’t maintain eye contact with him any longer. My hand flew over my mouth as I turned my head away. I saw the Starbucks logo in the distance and pointed. “We’re here!”
We went inside the Starbucks and looked around the establishment. The nostalgia washed over me like a wave as I took in every square inch of the place. Sometimes I missed working here and joking around with Alex, spraying whipped cream into each other's mouths when we had opening shifts together.
The place wasn’t usually busy on Sunday afternoons. The only people who occupied the tables were college and high school students studying silently on their laptops, middle schoolers gossiping in the corners, and elders either in groups or enjoying their own presence.
Trevor looked down at me and asked, “What do you want, Hayden? It’s on me.”
A hand flew over my heart as I pouted at him. “Really?” He nodded his head, pulling out his wallet. “I want a Venti Pumpkin chair cold foam with 3 pumps of caramel.”
He smiled brightly as he nodded his head once. “Alright! Anything you want, Mal?”
She looked back at Trevor and shook her head. “No, Jamie’s already got me covered.” The boys got in line while Mal and I found ourselves a patio seat. “Trevor is flirting so hard! You two are adorable!” ”Oh, stop it.” A smile crept onto my face as I adverted my eyes away from her. Her squeals filled up the air as she sat across me at the table. “Seems like you and Jamie are getting along.”
She nodded her head and said, “Yeah! He’s really sweet, but I don’t know. I think of him more as a friend and I think he does too.”
“Valid,” I said nodding my head. I did consider this an opening for me to interrogate Mal on her love life as she did mine. “Is there anyone that’s sparked your interest?” I asked as I scooted closer to the table, leaning slightly forward.
She shrugged her shoulders and sighed, “Not really. I mean there are a lot of people who have slid into my Insta DMs. Did I ever tell you JoJo Siwa slid into my DMs?”
My mouth gaped open, “Uh, no! When?!”
“During June,” she answered while giggling. “It was after I posted the pics of us at the LA Pride parade during tour. She was like ’Can I shoot my shot with you?’ and I was like ’Sadly no’. Left me on read after that.” I let out a loud pig-like snort before throwing my hand over my mouth, shocked by the sound. Mal erupted into laughter after this, also covering her mouth. Mal and I bicker a lot like sisters, but we also share wholesome moments like this like sisters. We loved each other like sisters after all. I couldn’t ask for a better girl best friend.
Mal glanced back behind me and she pulled her hand away. I looked back and saw Trevor and Jamie with both our drinks. I straightened my posture and looked back ahead at Mal. Trevor sat down next to me and placed the drink in front of me. “Here’s your pumpkin chai cold brew.”
I took the drink from him and held it up. “Thank you, Trevor!” He clanked his cup against mine and took a sip. “What did you get?” I asked.
“Oh, just a Venti hot cocoa. I’m a child at heart,” he said as he put a hand over his heart. I nodded my head as I took a sip of my own drink. Happiness filled my body as the cold brew hit my bloodline. Trevor put his drink on the table and glanced at Mal then back at me. “So, Jamie and I were talking and we wanted to know if you guys wanted to come to this Halloween party on the 22nd. Chase wanted me to invite the entire band since he’s a huge fan.”
“Chase?” My eyebrows furrowed as I glanced over at Mal, hoping she would be familiar with the name. She also had a puzzled expression on her face.
“Chase Hudson,” Trevor reiterated. Chase Hudson?! As in Lil Huddy?!
“Really?!” Mal asked, reciprocating the same bug-eyed expression as me.
Jamie nodded, “Yeah! When he found out that Trevor was talking to Hayden, he immediately gave him 4 extra tickets for you guys.”
Mal and I met each other’s gaze, the shock turning into us breaking out into smiles. “What do you say? You down?” Trevor asked, bringing the cup to his lips.
“Yes!” Mal and I answered in sync.
Mal then waved her hands around. “Wait a minute! You told Chase that you and Hayden are talking?” A smile crept onto her face.
“I mean, yeah. Is that not the right term?” he asked, looking back down at me.
Oh shit. “Uh, yeah. I guess it is,” I answered, giving him a sheepish smile.
Trevor expressed the same smile back to me. “Okay,” he said, taking my hand in his. “Good.”

It’s hard to forget the first time getting your heart broken by your best friend’s brother.
It was like a moment in a fairy tale when the nerd is able to score the popular guy at the end of the movie. Luca had shown up to Lia’s doorstep with a bouquet of flowers, a duck stuffed animal, and a sign which said:
I’D BE ONE LUCKY DUCK IF YOU WENT TO PROM WITH ME
Of course, she didn’t even hesitate to say yes. She rushed up to him and embraced him as tight as she could. After the proposal, it was all she could think and talk about.
Adam was happy to see Lia so happy. “I really didn’t think I would be a sophomore going to prom!” she squealed as she fell back onto her mattress, grabbing the stuffed duck from next to her.
Adam, on the other hand, sat at her desk trying to get his geometry homework done. The whole reason why he was at her house was to study with her, but she had gotten distracted with prom talk.
“I think I should get some credit for coming up with the idea,” he commented as he scribbled away at the equations on his worksheet.
Lia had the whole night planned out. First, Luca would stop by her house to pick her up. He would admire her and her sparkly dress when she came down the stairs like a princess being escorted to a ball.
Then, they would meet up with Adam and his date to take pictures with the Fantilli’s at the park. After that, they would go out to eat and make their way to the dance. They would dance and laugh and maybe even kiss at the end of the night.
After a month of waiting, it was finally the night Lia had been anticipating, and it started off like she had hoped it would.
She slipped into her shiny gold dress and matching heels after finishing up her hair and makeup. Like perfect sync, she heard the front door open and Luca’s voice echo throughout the house and up to her room.
She came down just like she had planned it out. Luca’s eyes met hers as she came down the stairs slowly. His jaw slacked as he watched her dress glisten in the light. When they finally met at the bottom, he couldn’t stop smiling.
“Cornelia,” he whispered. “You’re stunning.” He slid on her corsage to match his boutonnière, leaving a stupendous smile on her face. Even when taking pictures, he couldn’t stop staring at her. “You’re so beautiful, Lia,” he whispered into her ear as her mother snapped endless pictures of them.
It was a dream come true.
After being bombarded by her parents with pictures, they met up with Adam and his date, Emerson, at the park along with the boys’ parents.
Emerson was a girl from his mandatory art class freshman year, at the time she was a sophomore. They sat next to each other leaving Adam always distracted in class, but their dynamic was perfect because she was always there to help him pass.
She was a really pretty red head which Adam had developed feelings for shortly after meeting her. She wore a light pink dress with white heels and Adam wore a matching tie. They also had a matching pink corsage and boutonnière.
After pictures, the four of them went to get food at a steakhouse the Fantilli’s had reservations at before making their way to the dance.
Since Luca was the eldest brother, he had to drive them all everywhere. While Adam and Emerson sat in the backseat giggling with each other, Lia and Luca sat in the front.
Luca’s hand was rested on her leg. It felt so natural like it was meant to be there. Not only was his hand a secure feeling, but it also made her feel giddy.
Tumblr media
Adam snuck in Fireball shooters into the dance without ease. Lia, Adam, and Emerson had their heads on a swivel, but there were people everywhere and it was easy to sneak off. The chaperones were exhausted teachers who were probably drunk themselves.
A slow song started to play which caught the attention of Adam and Emerson. Emerson placed her hand on his arm, signaling that she wanted to go out and dance. Adam smiled at her before turning his attention back to Lia. “I’m gonna dance with Emerson,” he said. “Luca should be back soon. Probably taking a shit.”
Lia flashed a false smile and watched as the two strayed off together, leaving her stranded by the table. She looked around the packed gymnasium full of couples slow dances with one another before downing her entire shooter. Her throat burned and her eyes watered as her entire face scrunched up due to the strong flavor. Even with the amount of people here, she still felt very alone.
‘I need to find Luca’, she thought to herself making her way to the bathrooms where he had excused himself to. She tossed out the now empty bottle as she exited through the gym doors.
Her heels clicked against the hard tile as she made her way through the dimly lit hallway. She could see the bathrooms just down the hall, but they looked completely stranded.
Around the corner, she could hear a girl’s voice. “You know we could’ve just talked on the dance floor,” the disembodied girl giggled.
Lia turned around to head back to the gym doors. That was until she heard his voice respond, causing her to stop dead in her tracks. “No, we can’t.”
That drew not only Lia’s attention to around that corner, but it also physically dragged her over to the corner. Luca’s voice grew louder the closer she got to the end of the hall. “You know I’m here with Lia. She’s my date, you’re not.”
Lia’s head peaked around the corner to see them standing across each other. It was Amber, Luca’s ex girlfriend. What could she possibly want to do with him after she dumped him? “But Luca,” she pouted as she dragged her finger down his neck. He shuddered before pushing it away. “I really miss you.”
He didn’t say anything back, he just huffed and stared at her. Lia watched as his eyes shifted from anger and annoyance to hurt in an instant.
What was she doing to him? She had him wrapped around her finger still, even after tossing him to the side like a dirty t-shirt. It infuriated Lia, but like a bad car wreck, she couldn’t look away.
Lia felt relieved when he said, “No, you don’t.”
Before he was able to escape her, Amber was able to suck him back in with her coy expression. “But, babe. If I didn’t miss you, would I want to do this?” In a swift motion, her lips had locked with his.
Lia’s heart dropped to her stomach as she watched the two. She couldn’t speak, her jaw just hung wide open. This wasn’t how the night was supposed to go. Luca was supposed to be kissing her! Not his ex!
The worst part of it all, Luca didn’t even pull away. He kissed her back for a second before pulling away and shaking his head. Even though it was a second, it was a second too long for Lia. “I can’t,” he said flatly. “I can’t do this to Lia.” He said he couldn’t, but he just did.
His turned his head to find Lia paralyzed in front of him as she fought back tears. His face turned whiter than a ghost, along with Amber’s. “Lia…” He discarded Amber and made his way over to her, but she shook her head.
“Are you fucking kidding me?” Her eyes darted between both he and Amber. “Unbelievable. I expected this from Amber, but from you Luca?! I’m fucking done.”
She turned around to walk away, but Luca followed her. “Cornelia!” He grabbed onto her wrist, but she pulled away from his grip. “Please!”
Even when she was furious with him, she still couldn’t ignore him. She spun around and stared at him. Her doe brown eyes were now glossy with the tears she was doing everything in her power to fight back.
“What?!” she screamed. “What could you possibly want to say to me?!” He was taken aback from her yelling. His posture stiffened and he hunched his shoulders in an attempt to become smaller, possibly even invisible.
Lia didn’t even know what to do except stare at him with racing thoughts. She resisted the urge to punch him in the mouth.
What should she even do? Call him a bitch then leave him to sulk in his own thoughts?
Her mouth ran before her brain was ready. “Amber?” she choked out. “I mean, seriously? The girl you said you were over? Really, Luca?”
“It was a vulnerable moment,” he spoke, his voice barely above a whisper. His eyes fell down to his feet, too ashamed to even look Lia in the eye.
She scoffed, “Am I just supposed to watch you stare at your feet?” The tears finally fell after fighting a treacherous war.
He snuck a glance up at her, a look of guilt swept across his features. If she hadn’t known better, she would’ve kissed him now to know how it felt. “You don’t deserve what you don’t respect, Luca. I’m done.”
“I don’t want to lose you, Cornelia!” he finally replied. After hearing the words ‘I’m done’, he finally cracked. Not seeing her cry, not when she caught him kissing his ex, only when she cut it off.
She shook her head and spewed, “Can’t lose something you never had, Luca.” With that, she turned away and walked right back in the direction of the gymnasium.
Hearing him shout out her name caused her walking to turn to jogging as she sobbed even harder.
Where was Adam? She needed to find Adam.
She couldn’t find Adam before bumping into someone else on her way into the gym. “I’m really sorry!” she frantically apologized, wiping the tears away while avoiding eye contact with the man.
“Are you okay? What happened?” he hesitantly brought his hands up to her face. He tilted her face up so he could look at her. He had dark hair that flowed and piercing blue eyes.
Somehow, this man had captured the attention she needed for the night. It was a quick chance to escape this shit hole Luca had threw her in. She could dig herself out.
Tumblr media
It was the first time Lia kissed someone other than Luca. The kiss left her disgusted. She had an embarrassing coughing fit once they pulled away, which left upset the guy whose name she couldn’t remember. “Is there a problem?” he asked with his eyebrows lowered and eyes narrowed.
Sneakily taking shots with Adam at the table had really fucked her over now. Not to mention, she could only think about Luca in this moment. “It’s nothing, Luca! I-“
“Luca?!” he scoffed, quickly pulling his hands away from her body. “My fucking name is Jason!”
“Jason! I’m sorry! M-My brain is jumbled!” Her voice quivered even when trying to keep it stable, but she was a blubbering mess.
It’s not that Lia wanted to keep kissing Jason. He had fish lips and slobbered like a dog. She was desperate to fill that gaping hole Luca had left in her heart.
Jason got up from his spot on the floor, leaving her on the cold, hard floor. “Have a good night, Cornelia.” He stormed down the hallway while fuming, entering the gymnasium doors.
“Jason!” she yelled for him, but tears were already pouring from her eyes. Her makeup was already horrendously messed up, streaks of mascara streaming down her face as she became engulfed with her emotions. She grabbed her phone from the ground and immediately texted Adam.
Me
I need to go home.
Adam 🚶‍♀️
Where are u??
Me
Hallway by Mr. Thompson
Hurry pls
She wiped the tears from her cheeks with the back of her hand while sniffling. It did no use since they continued pouring out of her. “Fuck!” she said through sobs.
It didn’t take long for Adam to locate her, quickly rushing over to her and stooping down to her level. “What happened?” he asked, confusion in his eyes because of how hysterical she was. “Why are you all the way over here?”
She had no words she could spit out. Her brain was too jumbled, she was too emotional, and her heart was shattered. All she could say was, “Home. I want to go home!” She entirely broke down.
“Uh, yeah!” He looked around with a panicked expression, not fully knowing what to do. “Let me get Luca.”
“No!” She protested. “Please don’t!”
His expression went from panic to disappointment as the realization hit him. His brother was the reason. “Fuck,” he groaned. He got his phone out of his pocket and called him mom. “Mom? We have a situation… No, we’re safe! It’s just Luca and Lia… Okay, thank you!” He hung up the phone then grabbed Lia’s hand. “She’ll be here as soon as possible.”

In The Spotlight
TREVOR ZEGRAS X OC
October Series
synopsis: trevor meets hayden after the game and they hang out, the next day the band has to meet with aubrey to talk about a new album
warnings: language
word count: 2.8k
Fans poured out of the Honda Center arena happy with the 4 - 1 Ducks win. I stayed inside with Mal, Alex, and Wes as I anxiously awaited Trevor to come out and greet us. I would have some doubtful thoughts here and there such as, “What if he doesn’t show up?”
Mal rested her hand on my shoulder, “I’m sure he will.” She looked around, people still everywhere. “Just stay alert for people screaming ‘Oh my God! It’s Trevor Zegras’! That’s how we know he’s close by.”
I rolled my eyes as I tried my hardest to stop the smile that threatened to break through. It didn’t help that my cheeks now flushed with bright red heat against my already pale skin. “How will he even be able to find me through this crowd of people? There’s like at least tens of thousands of people here.”
Wes then looked behind me and smiled, “Like that.”
I turned around at the squeals that broke through the crowd. Before I could grasp what was happening, a sweaty casually dressed Trevor Zegras emerged through the valley of fans in awe around him. Some asked for pictures, some asked for autographs, and the others were too stunned by his presence to do anything.
My heart rate rapidly sped up as either a pit formed in my stomach or the butterflies had come back. His sky-blue eyes were fixated on me as a smile grew on his face. “Hayden Clarke,” he said, both enthusiasm and a New York accent slipping from his voice. “It’s so nice to see you again after all this time.”
A nervous smile made itself present on my face as he went in for the hug. Oh, okay! I thought as he wrapped his arms around me. As I embraced him, two things stood out to me. The first thing was our height distance. The last time I went to the doctor’s office in February, the nurse told me I stood at 5’4 and 3/4 — which is oddly specific. Since then I’ve assumed that I’ve grown to be about 5’5. Trevor stood at around 6’0, at least according to Google, and he looked it. Compared to me, at least.
I let go of the embrace and tucked some blonde strands of hair behind my ear. “It’s nice to see you again, Trevor,” I bashfully said. I struggled to maintain eye contact with him due to how sheepish he made me feel. “Have you met my band mates?” I asked him.
He shook his head and glanced over my shoulder before letting out a chuckle, “And I don’t think I will be.” My eyebrows furrowed as I turned around and found that the three of them had vanished. Those fuckers! I turned back to Trevor and forced a laugh, masking my aggravation with them. “Looks like I get to know you more now. Did you drive here?”
“Uh, Alex did actually. We all pretty much carpool together since we live together.” I shoved my hands in my hoodie pockets while looking up at him. His expression had soften compared to him earlier on the ice.
“Well, since your friends abandoned you… would you like me to give you a ride home?” My eyes grew as wide as they could. He’s already offering me a ride home? Is he trying to be prince charming?
My mom told me to never get into cars with men I’ve never met before. She didn’t want me to pop up missing, but I have Life 360 now, so what’s the worse that can happen? “Yes, please,” I answered.
Now we had to get through the mass of fans that crowded around us, shouting and taking pictures. I squeezed closer to him as I wrapped my arm around his, letting him lead us out to where ever he parked his car at. It had to be in some player reserved area, especially with the traffic coming out of the Honda Center.
Somehow, we lost the crowd of adoring fans which felt like a sigh of relief. “I haven’t seen a crowd like that since Miami!” I laughed as I glanced up at him. I still hadn’t let go of him, it felt comforting in a way. Maybe even a bit secure.
“It always feels like I’m in a pack of sardines when I’m near that exit,” he joked. “I should’ve told you to meet me by the locker room.”
I shrugged, “I don’t even know the lay out of the arena like that. Though it was one of the venues offered to us.”
Trevor dug in his sweatpants pocket and grabbed his keys from there. “Why didn’t you?” he asked as he unlocked the car.
My arm slowly let go of his as I made my way to the passenger seat of the car. “Because we were already performing at SDSU’s amphitheater. There was really no reason to go there and then drive an hour to Anaheim.”
Trevor chuckled as he answered, “Well, so I could see you guys perform obviously.”
“Should’ve just come to the SDSU one then,” I replied in a snarky tone.
His hand flew over his chest as his mouth popped open in a comedic way. I laughed looking at the obvious fake offense on his face. “You’re really mean you know that!” He then started the car up and began backing out of his parking spot. He placed his hand on the head of the passenger seat as he turned back to guide himself.
That was really attractive for no reason I could explain. He noticed before I was able to catch myself staring at him the entire time he did this with my jaw slacked. He smirked as he put the car into drive, facing forward again. “You also have a staring problem.”
“I thought you said I was talented,” I bit back. Bickering was the only way of flirting I could perfect.
“There’s a lot of things I’ve said about you,” he replied. “Mean, talented, surprisingly funny, and really pretty.”
That caught me off guard, I looked back at him with my eyes wide. “What?”
“I would dumb not to shoot my shot with you.” He glanced over at me, stopping at a stop light. He looked over at me, the red light being the only thing illuminating his face in the dark. “I tried to at your first gig, but you wouldn’t give up on caring that speaker back to the truck.”
“Well, it’s a good thing I didn’t have you do that. That’s how I met Aubrey and got us our record deal.” I glanced down at his phone which was plugged into the car and then back up at him. “I need your phone to put my address into, unless you already know where I live and avidly stalk me without my knowledge.”
“Oh, yeah,” Trevor said as he put in his passcode and gave the phone to me. The light flickered green and Trevor stepped on the gas pedal. “You might as well put your number in there as well.”
A smile cracked on my face as a giggle slipped out. He was such a smooth talker, it made me want to scream. I put the address into Waze, the directions immediately popping up on the car’s screen, then did as he told me to. I put my number into his phone before placing it in the cup holder.
“Is there anything you want me to get you to eat before I drop you off?” he asked, again glancing over at me with his bedroom eyes.
“Uh,” I hummed. “There’s an In-and-Out burger near my house. I only had popcorn at the game.”
“Thank God, Hay. I’m starving,” Trevor said as he turned in the direction the app told him to. I’m already Hay to him? That’s cute.
🎶
After I came home from hanging out with Trevor, I couldn’t sleep. Nothing happened like a kiss or anything, but the tension was unreal and that was only the first hang out. He wanted to meet again at Pearson Park on Sunday with Jamie and Mal. I agreed without any hesitation, especially since Mal would kill me if I ruined her opportunity to meet another Ducks player.
Now it was the afternoon and I sat on the couch, scrolling through Twitter. There were posts left and right about Trevor and I during and after the game. People were now speculating a possible relationship between us, which I now wouldn’t be opposed to.
One of the posts was from someone with a Trevor Zegras profile picture. They posted a picture they took of their TV screen showing my phone which said ‘Meet me after the game!’ and Trevor responding to it. The caption said:
THIS IS MY ROMAN EMPIRE!!!’
When I went onto Instagram, an Anaheim Ducks fanpage posted the same thing except it was the highlight and with the announcers. One of the guys said, “And there’s Hayden Clarke, lead singer of Pink Slip, shooting her shot with Zegras right there.”
“Technically he shot his shot first when he did that interview with Gina,” the other one responded.
It was kind of funny to see how viral this has already gone, and we haven’t even done anything.
Wes came out of his room with his burrito blanket wrapped around him. He yawned loudly before announcing his presence, “Good morning.” He had bags under his eyes and his hair was an absolute mess. I beamed at him and nodded my head, “Good morning!”
“Uh oh,” Wes laughed. “What did you and Trevor get into?”
I rolled my eyes with red cheeks and got up from the couch. I watched as Wes grabbed a mug from the cabinet and placed it beneath the coffee machine. “Nothing! I promise!” I pulled myself onto the counter and swayed my feet. “We just got food last night and we talked. He’s really sweet.”
“Is he boyfriend material?” Wes asked as the machine dispensed coffee for him.
“Okay. One, don’t ever say ‘boyfriend material’ again. Two, yes he is!” I chirped. “He said I was pretty and he did that sexy thing that guys do when they back out of parking spots and —” I heard my phone begin to ring, cutting my off from my talk about Trevor. Disappointment swept across Wes’s features as he was intrigued to hear more about my night with Trevor. I checked who was calling and saw it was Aubrey. I picked up the phone and put it up to my ear. “Hey, Aubrey. What's up?” I answered.
“Hey, Hayden!” she responded, “Is there any time I can see you all later today at the studio?” Wes leaned against the island next to me as he listened in on Aubrey and I’s conversation. He took a long sip of his black coffee.
I put the phone on speaker before I replied, “Uh, yeah! Alex and Mal get back around 2.” Mal and Alex were early birds unlike Wes and I, so they had gotten up early to get brunch. “It’s only Wes and I right now.”
“Hi, Aubrey!” Wes said to her.
“Hi, Wes!” she replied, I could hear the smile on her face. She always had one. “I should be free around then. I’ll give you a call if anything changes,” Aubrey said.
With that, I said bye and hung up the phone. Wes pulled himself up on the counter and said, “I wonder if she’s gonna talk about Trevor.” He then gasped and playfully hit me, “What if she says you two should date for publicity?”
“Who said it would be for publicity?” I shrugged my shoulders while smiling.
“Don’t tell me you’re already falling for him,” he said with a chuckle.
I placed a finger over my lips and simply shushed him. I snagged the mug from his hands and took a swig. The bitter hot coffee made my nose crinkle as the boiling liquid ran down my throat. “This stuff is poison. I don’t know how you can drink plain black coffee.”
🎶
We entered Hillister at 2:03 PM and made our way to the control room where we found Aubrey glued to her phone like a screenager. She sat on the rolly chair while on her phone. She perked her head up like a dog when we entered the room. “Hey, guys! Sit down! I have stuff to talk about.” She gestured us to a couch that would she still believed would fit all of us — which it never did.
I crammed in between Mal and Wes. “Okay, we need to talk about new music.” She clasped her hands together and leaned toward us. “You guys haven’t released an album since last year, let alone a single. The fans are expecting stuff from you guys. Especially you, Hayden.”
“Me?” I asked.
“Yes!” Aubrey exclaimed. “There’s so much buzz about you and Trevor. It’s all I’ve seen on my feed. Which good job by the way, he’s a cutie.” Mal nudged me with her elbow and cooed as I rolled my eyes, though I struggled to hide my smile. “I’m gonna call up Kayla and see if I can get her down here sometime this week to discuss ideas,” she said as she pulled out her phone.
Kayla was older than all of us, but younger than Aubrey. I loved her songwriting abilities. Not only was she was good, but it gave us less work to do. That was sort of the problem though. The music didn’t feel authentic when performing. I just equivalated it to performing a cover of a song no one knows.
“Uh, Aubrey?” I spoke up and shifted in my spot again. She perked her head up and let out a hum. “Could we try something new…?”
“Oh, you want someone else?” Aubrey tilted her head to the side slightly, her phone lowering as she looked at me. “I can find someone with a new sound, it’ll probably just take about 2 weeks instead of this one.”
I shook my head. “No. I, uh,” I stuttered and looked over at Alex and Mal who were looking at me just as confused as Aubrey. “I was wondering kind of wondering if we could, maybe, start writing our own music.”
“Huh?!” Alex asked aloud, his eyebrows knitted together. I could hear the loud slap he had received on his arm from Mal due to his verbal shock.
If you would’ve suggested to me a year ago writing music for ourselves, I would’ve said no. I was, and still am, sort of embarrassed by the stuff I came up with growing up. I also wasn’t the type of person to suddenly change my mind especially on stuff this big, but something about writing our own music just made sense. It’s why I wanted to form a band in the first place. “Are you sure, Hayden?” she asked.
I looked over at the three of them before answering, “Yes. I just feel it would really challenge us as a band and make our music feel more personal. It’s a better way for us to connect with our fanbase.”
She placed her phone down on her lap and nodded her head, “Uh, yeah! If you guys think you can do it. I would love it, but let’s get into details,” Aubrey said as she adjusted her position in her own seat. “I want to be able to have everything recorded by the end of November, mid December at the latest. I want something to put out by Spring of next year.” She spun around and grabbed her keyboard from the empty chair next to her and wrote down the requirements. At least a 10 track album, something to do with love as it could really promote sales.
She also wanted us to go on tour again, but she said logistics of that would be determined around spring when the album is planned to drop. She wanted it to be bigger and better than the previous tour we had over the summer.
“Hayden,” Aubrey placed both her hands down on the clipboard and again stared right at me. “I believe you will be America’s next punk pop princess, this band will be remembered for decades to come.”

The Start Of Something
TREVOR ZEGRAS X OC
October Series
synopsis: hayden and the rest of the group go to an anaheim ducks game and she shoots her shot after ending up on the jumbotron
warnings: language
word count: 3.3k
“Oh my god!” Mal screamed from the couch. Maliyah was always screaming, it’s why I’ve learned to just ignore her. It also didn’t help that she’s become obsessed with hockey, meaning she now screams when watching games with Alex. “Trevor Zegras talked about us during his pre-season game interview!” As soon as the atmosphere goes from the sunny summer to the leaf changing autumn, the obsession with hockey sky rockets as that’s when the season starts back up. Mal makes that known every year. “Hayden, did you not hear me? Talking about us! Like Pink Slip!”
I was just trying to grab a Dr. Pepper from the fridge. “About us?” I asked, obviously uninterested. I could honestly care less about a hockey player. To be fair, I did react this way when I saw that Olivia Rodrigo had followed our Instagram.
Mal clearly didn’t pick up on my disinterest since she then said, “Yeah! Look!” I rolled my eyes while groaning. Was there a remote I could buy that would put Mal on mute? I made my way over to the couch from the kitchen and peered over her shoulder to see her phone screen. She instead shoved the phone into my hands. “Watch!”
I glanced up at her with my eyebrows lowered before looking back down at the phone which had TikTok pulled up. The caption said;
Trevor Zegras listens to Pink Slip AND has a possible crush on lead singer, Hayden Clarke????
Oh, Lord, I thought.
There were two people on the screen, a tall hockey player who had sweat drenched hair and stood taller than the other who was a lady conducting the interview. She wore a violet colored dress and heavy makeup. I assumed they were in the locker room or something. She asked him, “One more question here before we sign off. There was a picture of you in the locker room Jamie Drysdale posted where you had your AirPods in. We want to know what kind of hype music do you listen to before games?”
I couldn’t hide the cringe that question had given me, it was very present on my scrunched up face. Just the way she delivered the question made me die inside a little. “Hype music?” I then gagged. I hated when we would get interviewed how reporters tried to relate with our audience… and it painfully showed. The worst examples I’ve heard in our interviews were definitely ‘slay’ and ‘baddie’.
Mal rolled her eyes and said, “Listen!” I just poked my tongue out at her and looked back down at the phone. I had talked a bit over the video, so I just tuned back in.
Whatever answer he had given her was clearly not enough for her because her eyes pierced into him still as she maintained that reporter lady smile on her face. It clearly looked unhuman. She had He seemed slightly uncomfortable with her Skinwalker appearance, but did his best to give her the satisfactory answer she craved. “Oh, uh, I listened to Drake, 21, Travis Scott, but I would listen to other people than just rap.”
I saw that it had already been like 30 seconds into the video, but it felt like 30 minutes. I looked up from the phone and stared at Mal. “Last time I checked we weren’t Drake, 21, or Travis,” I sarcastically said, holding out her phone so she could take it back and I could get back to my drink.
“Shut up! Just keep watching!” She rolled her eyes and shoved the phone back to me. I sighed as I looked back down at her phone and continued watching the interview.
The interviewer nodded her head and brought the mic back to her. “And who’s that?” She laughed, “Come on, Trevor! The people want to know!”
Trevor gave her a dry chuckle before he answered, “I would say they're more of a post game tune, but probably Pink Slip.” The mention of our band name felt weird when coming out of his mouth. That weird feeling then got mixed with some nostalgia whenever he mentioned my name in particular. “It’s kind of cheesy I know, but Hayden is really talented and the band just has an overall good sound.” Maybe I was crazy, or maybe it was the fact that Mal watched the Ducks a ton, but his voice along with his face was so familiar. There were many people we saw on tour, I’ve had many fan interactions all over the nation, but somehow this interview felt oddly personal.
“See! See!” Mal squealed as she snatched the phone away from my hands. “Trevor Zegras said that you are really talented. I think he has a little crush,” she cooed.
I could feel my face flush bright red as I rolled my eyes and scoffed, “whatever.” I walked away from her before she could see my face and made my way back to the kitchen. I hauled myself up onto the island in the middle of it, taking a sip from my can.
Something about him felt oddly familiar and I couldn’t place my finger on it. I spaced out as I envisioned his face in my mind. I repeated the way he said my name in his mind over and over again. There was no hesitancy when he said my name, like it was just in his vocabulary. There’s no way I haven’t talked to him before.
Wait. My eyes grew wide as the revelation came over me. I turned my head to say something to Mal, but the front door flew open and in came Alex and Wes with bags in their hands. “We got breakfast for our lovely ladies,” Alex said as the two of them made the kitchen. This was the worst part about having roommates, no privacy. It was also the best part because free food. Alex saw that I was on the counter and stared at me. “Get down, Hayden.” He then turned his back to me as he placed down the bags on the counter.
I groaned as I hopped off the counter and sat on a stool instead. “When did you become so bossy?” I asked him. He was older than me by a year, but it was barely even a year. He had just turned 21 and now he felt the sudden need to treat me like a toddler.
“Well,” he started as he began unpacking the boxes of food. “I consider myself the more responsible one here.”
Bullshit.
Weston laughed as he placed down the other bags right next to me. “You turned 21 and suddenly you think you’re in charge,” he joked as he pulled out a specific box and held it out to me. “Here you go!” I smiled as I took the box from Wes’s hands. Wes and I were tight and we have been since birth. He would always have my back whenever Mal and Alex had the random urge to gang up on me, which was at least once every hour.
Mal got up from the couch and leaned against the counter next to Alex. “I believe Alex is being helpful,” she defended. Just like that. She then began to open the carry out boxes to find her breakfast order. When she found it, she looked up at Alex and smiled. “I appreciate you being in charge, it keeps us in line.”
Alex bashfully grinned as he replied in his sweet tone, “Thanks, Mal.” Wes and I looked at each other, expressing our disgust by their sappy conversation. Mal and Alex are just friends, so they say. “I feel like I don’t get enough recognition around here.” He threw away the now empty bag and grabbed his box of food.
Wes and I believed that there’s a secret fling going on behind all of our backs. It’s either that or just the fact they obviously liked each other. It’s gotten so obvious to the point where even Aubrey has her suspicions. They always deny it however, so who knows?
Mal beamed back at him, “Well, this hockey game tonight will prove at least my appreciation! Maybe even Hayden will.” I pulled my eyes away from Wes as confusion swept my features. “Now that her secret admirer isn’t so secret.”
I wanted to shove my eggs benedict right in her face. “What do you mean?” Wes asked, his ears now perked like a dog hearing the word ‘Treat!’ from it’s owner.
“Nothing!” I intruded. “It’s nothing.” Mal had a smirk on her face as I scowled at her, my lips pursed. After that, I finished my food pretty quickly and made my way back to my room to avoid anymore conversation about Trevor.
I used my messy room as an excuse to get away from the chatter. It looked like my room had been hit by a tornado, so I decided it was the perfect time to give it a clean. It’s better than my usual ‘Oh my mom’s calling me! Gotta go!’ which I used 15 times yesterday.
I started with picking up clothes off the floor and throwing them into my comedically oversized laundry bin. Then I made my bed just for me to destroy again later on in the day, the latest being 2 in the afternoon.
As I began to organize my desk, I heard a knock on my door listened as it cracked open. I glanced over and saw Wes’s face popping through the crack. “You should tell me what’s going on,” Wes suggested.
I immediately looked back down at my desk and continued grabbing all the wadded up paper balls on my desk and said, “Well, I'm doing a bit of spring cleaning… in the fall.”
I guess he considered this an invitation to come into my room because he shut the door behind my as he plopped down on my made bed. Guess it only took 2 minutes for it to be messed up again. “I'm really sick of third wheeling and I wanna hear about you and Trevor!”
I whipped my head back at him and groaned. Mal, you bitch! “There’s nothing going on between me and Trevor,” I said. I looked back at my desk and continued throwing stuff away. I had my own personal landfill full of paper.
“Okay, there might not be anything going on now.” He got up from the bed and made his way over to my desk, snagging a couple of the song books that rested on there. “But why not have fun with it? Hayden, we’re famous now! We can have whoever we want!”
Wes was one of the people I first cried to when James broke my heart. He knew how hurt I was whenever I came to him, I felt he would be the last person to want me date again especially when we’re celebrities now. “Why would I worry about a relationship right now when we’re at the peak of our careers? Aubrey wouldn’t want that happening.”
“Are you kidding?” Wes snorted. “I bet if Aubrey were here right now, she would be the one advocating for it the most! I also highly doubt you would be worried when you’re actually in the relationship, Hay.”
Opening myself up would be a nice change from all the heartbreak songs on our previous album. “I don’t know,” I said. “It’s not like he’s a complete stranger…” The way my voice trailed off when I said that sounded mysterious, and Wes obviously wanted to know more.
“What do you mean?” he asked, now intrigued more than ever.
I cracked a small smile and looked over at him. “Remember Patricia’s gig?” He nodded his head, his eyes focused on me more than they ever had before. “Well, Trevor came over to me while I was struggling to get the last speaker and asked for a pic.”
He gasped as the realization struck him. “That’s what took you so long!”
“Yeah,” I laughed. “He said to remember his name when we got famous… Maybe I could start something up with him.”
“Shoot your shot at this game!” Wes’s hands grasped my shoulders. “I beg of you!”
🎶
Mal had gotten us pretty good seats for the game. We were right up against the glass on the Ducks’ side. The boys were warming up for the game when we got there. There were guys practicing shots with the goalie blocking them, there were guys passing the puck back and forth, and there were guys running plays. Same for the opposing team, the San Jose Sharks.
On the way here, Mal had educated Wes and I on everything we needed to know since we were both absolutely clueless. That didn’t stop, even when we sat down. “The only player I really like on the Sharks is Will Smith,” Mal said as she pointed over to the guy with the jersey number 2. Alex just simply rolled his eyes and cracked a smile.
Warm ups lasted for about 15 more minutes after that, then they had someone sing the national anthem, then the game started. Mal and Alex were far too invested into the game to even care about the world around them. That meant I couldn’t tell them anything about Trevor and the fact that I’m possibly considering “trying him out” I guess.
Wes and I had a mild interest in this game, but only because of Trevor and the violent nature of the game. Every time one of the players got slammed into the glass in front or near us, him and I would jump high out of our seats. My heart would stop for a split second before I would hysterically crack up.
Wes and I decided to head up to concession, leaving Alex and Mal alone to enjoy the game. Even while we were getting snacks, I still could only focus on getting Trevor’s attention. “How am I even supposed to get Trevor’s attention when he can’t hear me over all the fans screaming?” I asked as I grabbed the popcorn bucket from the concession lady.
“Hmm,” Wes hummed as he grabbed the sodas before telling the lady, “Thanks.” We made our way back to seats as he came up with something. “How about you write something on your phone and put it up to the glass. Say something like ‘You’re cute’!”
“Ew, no! That’s too desperate! I still wanna be kind of hard to get,” I said. It needed to be short and simple though, so not my number.
Finally, it hit 2nd intermission and we stayed seated while everyone else went to concessions. Mal talked about the game so far. “Did you see the way Jamie got slammed into the glass by that one dude?! He laid him out entirely! I would’ve been throwing hands.” Her enthusiasm and excitement for the game caused us to laugh along with her.
While she rambled, I decided to sneak a glance up at the jumbo screen to see what was going on. There were people in the crowd like former players and actors, but then we popped up on the screen. Then our band name popped up on the large screen, but not only that. It said:
Pink Slip (Trevor’s favorite post game band)
“Guys!” I slammed my hands onto both Wes and Alex before pointing up at the Jumbotron above us. Everyone looked up and we all started waving and smiling. We had never been on camera before, especially like this.
When the camera was finally off us. All four of us started cheering. “Oh, my God! We’re, like, actually famous!” Weston squealed as he wrapped his arms around me. I haven’t seen Weston this happy since him and Alejandro broke up a few months ago.
The break up was insanely messy and had happened in the apartment while we were all there. There was a lot of screaming and yelling to the point Mal and I had to drag Alex into another room so he wouldn’t beat the shit out of Alejandro.
I was just caught off by the fact we were also known as Trevor’s favorite band. Like I get he’s famous and all, but was he really the team’s most popular player? I don’t receive a lot of sports feed on any of my social media pages — other than a couple hockey videos of plays, the whole Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, and some high school football players dancing to trends.
I considered this a perfect time to say something to both Alex and Mal. “Guys,” I turned my attention over to them. “Trevor and I have met before!”
Mal furrowed her eyebrows, “What? No way.”
“Yes way!” I said, “We were at Patricia’s gig and he came up to me and asked for a picture with me! That’s what took me forever!”
Alex then chimed in with his own disbelief, “How do you know it was him? Maybe it was someone who looked like him.”
I shook my head, “He literally said his name was Trevor Zegras and told me to remember him when we got famous. Guys, it’s him!”
Mal then put aside her doubt and instead replaced it with delusion. “With the way he was talking about you during his interview, he really wants you. I can see it. You should ask him out.”
Before we could continue our conversation about it, the players came back out on the ice. I looked up at the clock and saw that 2nd intermission was almost over. I looked back at the group and smiled, “I have an idea, but I need your help.” After I explained to them the plan, all we had to do was wait.
I looked down at my phone and pulled up SnapChat, where I wrote ‘Meet me after the game!’ on it. I turned on rotation lock so he would be able to read it when I tilt my phone to horizontal. While I was setting that up, Mal began hitting me in the arm as she shifted to the edge of her seat.
I look up and see that Trevor is zooming past San Jose’s defensemen with the puck before shooting it into the goal, making a clean shot. The airhorns roared as Mal and Alex jumped from their seats with excitement.
I cheered along with them, also springing up from me seat. I brought up phone up to the glass as he made his way over to us. Then all four of us began banging on the glass to catch his attention. He turned over to us and smiled wide, but his teammates were coming toward us.
He came up to the glass in front of us and made eye contact with me. I couldn’t hear him, but I could read his lips as he yelled, “Outside!”
“Where outside?” I yelled back, but his teammates swarmed him.
He celebrated with them before looking back at me. I couldn’t make out what he was saying at first and I could tell he knew that cause he repeated it. The only words I picked up were *’Find you’*. He was going to find me after the game. *Oh my God!* I could feel butterflies swarm my stomach as a wide flustered smile grew on my face. Mal grabbed onto me and screamed in my ear, now excited with the fact Trevor agreed to meet me after the game.

TREVOR ZEGRAS X OC
October Series
synposis: introduction to pink slip and hayden’s relationship with trevor
warnings: none
word count: 2.9k
Pearson Park’s trees were going through a variety of leaf color changes as late October rolled in. It seemed there was no difference in temperature compared to the summer which was only months earlier. There were tables and fold-out chairs scattered all over the place near a tiny little stage that currently held musical equipment. There was a group gathered at the park for a party, celebrating Patricia’s 70th birthday.
She requested a lot of things including a blue-themed party, a red velvet birthday cake with flowers on it, her family and closest friends to be in attendance, and most importantly, a live band to perform her favorite songs growing up.
Gary, her husband, knew that the bands who made the songs she so dearly loved were dead by now, so she went to his son. “I need a band to perform some songs for your mom,” he said to Jacob. “You know how much she loves her music.”
Jacob laughed in response to his father’s joke, gradually growing quiet as he began to think of any solutions. “Well,” he hummed, his finger tapping against the stubble of hair on his chin. “I might have someone.”
It was convenient that he had sparked up a relationship with a woman at work recently by the name of Janene Clarke. Janene had a daughter who was in college named Hayden who started up a band where they would cover certain songs.
“I’ll give her a call and see what she can do,” Jacob said to the satisfaction of his father.
The name of Hayden’s band was Pink Slip. It held 3 college kids and a high schooler and they performed covers of popular 2000’s punk songs, stuff from Avril Lavine, Paramore, and more. Not similar to any of the stuff Janene had asked her to perform.
“I don’t know any of these songs, mom,” Hayden groaned as she plopped on the bottom bunk reserved for her in her dorm room. “The only Billy I know is Billy Idol.”
“Well Jacob asked a favor and I really think this gig could get your names out there.” Janene was someone you couldn’t say no to, which only led Hayden to let out an even longer and far more exaggerated groan. “Who knows? Maybe you could slip a song of your own in there.”
Hayden has always had a hidden talent of writing songs — having notebooks filled with lyrics throughout her high school years. There was a variety of songs in there, ranging from depressing all the way up to romance and love.
Her mom was right though, not only would it be a good way to put themselves out there but she could also perform stuff of her own. After a long silence from Hayden, she let out a sigh and asked, “Time and day?”
Now the day had finally come where they were going to perform. Everything leading down to the aesthetic was perfect. Well, except Hayden. “I don’t know,” Hayden sighed as she ran her fingers through her dark loose curls. “Maybe we should cut Betty from the set list. She specifically requested stuff like Fleetwood Mac and that ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ song.”
The bass player, Mal, sat next to Hayden. She assisted Alex, the lead guitarist, with buttoning up the sleeves of his white collared shirt. “Yeah, but maybe after this she’ll add Pink Slip right to that list.” She was doing her best to be encouraging, but it didn’t help when Hayden was as stubborn as a rock. She simply narrowed her eyes at Mal before letting out a huff before looking up at Alex.
“Don’t even try to look at me to come to your defense,” he said as he continued staring down at Mal. “This is an A and B conversation.”
Hayden’s expression shifted to annoyance as she scoffed, “Are you serious?”
“Hayden, you can't just back out of something because you’re scared to. That’s not how life works,” Alex said. “We’re already here. We wrote the song. Now we have to perform it.”
Hayden bit her tongue as the sentence ‘thought this was an A and B conversation’ stained it. She instead rolled her eyes and faintly responded with, “Fine.”
“There you go,” Alex replied with a cheeky smile on his face, what Hayden would give to smack it clean off. He then pulled his arms away from Mal and checked the sleeves. “There we go. Thanks, Mal.” The tone of his voice became sweeter when talking to her like it did every single time.
“Mhm!” She nodded her head before she got up from her chair and stood in front of Hayden. “Hayden, look up at me,” Mal said. Hayden hesitantly glanced up to see the stern look on Mal’s face. “We’re gonna kill it tonight whether Patricia likes it or not.”
Hayden nodded her head as she listened, chiming in with one word responses like ‘yup’ and ‘mhm’. It’s not that she didn’t appreciate what Mal and Alex were trying to do for her. It’s just the words of encouragement didn’t help when Hayden was feeling both shy and insecure about the song.
“Alright,” Weston said after coming back from a conversation with Patricia, Gary, Jacob, and Janene, “Gary gave us the green to start.” The final member of Pink Slip was Weston, the drummer. He was the youngest out of them all, being a senior in high school.
“Sounds good,” Alex replied. “Come on, Hayden. You got this.” Now Hayden drowned in worry and anxiousness. Her legs felt like jello as Alex held her hand, helping her up onto the stage. Hayden got in front of the microphone while the others got their instruments set up.
The crowd in front of them hushed as all eyes fell onto the band on stage. Alex played a couple of notes, checking with Alejandro on the sound. The only other sound that filled Hayden’s ears was the sound of her own racing heart.
Out of all the faces in the crowd, her mom stood out the most. She mouthed the words ‘You’ll do great’ to Hayden, causing a smile to slip onto her own face. She closed her eyes and took a couple deep breaths as she her mother’s words repeated in her head.
She then opened her eyes again and plastered a smile on her face, grabbing onto the microphone. “Good evening, everyone! What a party Patricia has had so far, am I right?” The crowd broke out into applause as a couple of whistles broke through the crowd. Hayden let out a small giggle in response before continuing her small talk, “I think I can say on behalf of Pink Slip, we’re very delighted to be here celebrating Patricia’s birthday. We have a lot prepared for tonight…” she paused for a moment, looking back at Alex who nodded his head to keep going, “But our first song is actually something I wrote.” She could now hear clapping throughout the audience, her mom being the loudest of them all. “So if you allow us, I give to you our original song “‘Betty’.”
Janene cupped her hands and let out a long cheer causing Hayden to break out into a wide smile as she then looked back at Alex. She whispered loud enough to where she was audible to the band but no one else, “5, 6, 7, 8…”
Alex started strumming his guitar to start the song off. Mal let her bass droop from from her neck as she brought a harmonica to her lips, playing just as they had practiced. She faced the crowd again and sang on cue. “Betty, I won't make assumptions about why you switched your homeroom but I think it’s ‘cause of me,” she sang, smiling as she did so. As soon as the words poured from her mouth, she felt not only her mind but her body in general go on auto pilot. Seeing how wide Patricia’s smile was washed all the nerves away.
As the song led into the chorus, Alex’s strumming became harder on the guitar. “But if I just showed up at your party, would you have me? Would you want me? Would you tell me to go on home? Or lead me to the garden?” Hayden had even commonsense to know that she should censor herself at a family even like this. Originally in the letter she based this song off, James wrote:
‘What if I showed up at your party? What would you do? Would you have or want me back or would you just tell me to just go fuck myself?’
“In the garden, would you trust me if I told you it was just a summer thing? I'm only 17, I don't know anything but I know I miss you!” She spun around, her dress flaring out as she did so.
The real world had clear got away from her as she envisioned herself at an actual performance. The venue would be sold out with fans everywhere waving their phone flashlights and singing along with her. Her heart fluttered at the idea of her music having an influence on people like this, the feeling of true happiness now washed over her.
When she made it to the end of the bridge and opened her eyes again, snapping back to the reality that she wasn’t famous. She was a regular college student who worked as a barista. No one knew her name, this was the first audience who has even heard her sing. Singing was the only escape, and she knew that.
Alex played the final chord which led the crowd to cheer for the band. She smiled widely as she looked around the event along with Alejandro who had his phone out, recording the band. She looked back at the band behind her and saw Mal smiling wide and giving her a thumbs up.
🎶
Hayden bowed on stage when the performance was over. “Thank you for giving us the oppurtunity to come out here and perform tonight and we hope we made your birthday fun, Patricia!” she said into the mic before waving.
The band made it off the stage, though it didn’t take long for Mal’s enthusiasm to get the best of her. She wrapped her arms around Hayden tightly while squealing, “You sounded amazing!”
Hayden laughed as a radiant smile swept across her face. “Your harmonica solo really stole the show,” Hayden teased which also led Mal to laugh.
When they let go of each other, Alex also individually embraced both girls. “I'm so proud of us!”
Weston didn’t immediately come over to hug the group. He instead hugged and kissed his boyfriend, celebrating with him before coming over to the rest of the band. “We sounded amazing!” Wes then looked back at the stage where everything was and sighed, “Now let’s pack everything up.”
The group grabbed things to bring back to Alex’s truck. Hayden helped carry a couple speakers over as everyone else took their personal instruments. The post-show exhaustion hit her like a bag of bricks as she leaned against the truck. “I’m gonna go grab the last speaker and we should be good.” She went back toward the stage and grabbed the last speaker.
She groaned as she tried to pull it up off the ground. “You need any help with that?” Hayden’s head immediately spun behind her where she was greeted by a mysterious guy who she had spotted in the crowd.
She didn’t know how to react. There was this cute guy in front of her offering to help her out, what should she do? “Uh, no I should be good!” She shouldn’t have done that.
“Oh! Alright,” he replied. Shit, she thought. I blew it!She couldn’t just go back and say ‘Actually, yeah could you help me?’ That would be stupid. “Well, can I at least get a picture with you?”
Wait a minute. She might’ve not blown it. “You’re joking, right?” Oh my God just shut up, she thought to herself. She felt like she just kept making this worse and worse.
“Nope,” he said. “My mom wants a picture from her Facebook.”
This caused Hayden to laugh loudly in response before she nodded her head and agreed, “Okay then.”
“Bet!” He stood next to Hayden and wrapped his arm around her. Hayden held up a peace sign as he snapped the picture. He looked down at his phone and looked at the picture. He then looked back at Hayden and smiled. “By the way, I’m Trevor. Trevor Zegras,” he introduced himself and held out his hand to shake.
Hayden took his hand and shook it, “Do you always introduce yourself with your first and last name.”
“Well no,” he said as he let go of her hand. “I just want you to remember my name when you guys become famous, Hayden.”
The way her mouth rolled off his tone caused her cheeks to flush. Not only was he cute, but he had loads of charm with him as well. She attempted to reciprocate, “I’ll try. Never know how many other guys will come walking up to me to help me with carrying a speaker.”
Though she though it was cringy, this won a laugh out of Trevor before he again asked, “You sure you don’t need help?”
Hayden nodded her head and smiled, “I’m good. Thanks, Trevor.” With that, the conversation was over. She watched as he made his way back to the party, really wishing she had taken up that offer for him to carry the speaker. Not only because it was heavy, but because she wanted to keep talking to him. Her problem was that she was awkward. She grabbed it and hauled it over to the truck, which now felt miles away. Okay, maybe she wanted him here because it was heavy.
When she felt all hope was loss, a mysterious voice called out to her. “Here, let me help!” A lady came rushing over. Was this just some joke? Why were there more people coming up to her? Whatever. Now someone could help her carry this speaker. The two of them carried the speaker back to the truck where everyone was waiting for them.
“There you are!” Alex called out to Hayden as her and this random lady lifted the speaker into the back of the truck. “Should’ve told us you needed help.”
Hayden let out a long exhale as she finally let go of the speaker, “Well, you should’ve offered to!” she snipped back. She then turned her attention back to the lady still standing by her. “Thank you so much…” Her eyebrows furrowed and her eyes narrowed as she cued for a name.
“I’m Aubrey Torez,” the lady introduced herself and held out her hand. Hayden shook it, Aubrey had a strong grip and a form handshake. “I work with Hillister Records downtown and we’re looking for new young talent. Is this the band?”
Hayden’s eyes widened as this all came at once. “Uh, yeah!” She looked back at the group, but Alejandro was gone. She then looked back at Aubrey. “That's Alex, Maliyah, and Weston.” She pointed at them when she said their names.
“Pleasure to meet you all! I was so blown away with your performance. I can’t believe you wrote Betty yourselves,” Aubrey complimented. “There’s not talent like that every day here in Anaheim.”
“Hayden’s really got a talent for writing, miss,” Wes said as he placed his hands on her shoulders from behind.
This led Aubrey’s eyes to fixate on Hayden as they lit up, “I can tell you’re the leader of the band and I really want to know if being famous is something you’d really want.” Famous?! Hayden thought as her eyes widened. “At Hillister, we can get you guys selling albums, promote your music, and going on tours in under a year. Is that something you would want, Hayden?”
All the eyes fell on Hayden as she stood there paralyzed. This was a lot to soak in — especially for a girl who just worked at Starbucks. “Uh,” she hummed as she looked around at her other band mates who all relied on her answer. She panicked and blurted out, “We’ll have to talk about it before we make a decision.” The band looked at her confused since this was something they were obviously all wanting.
“Yeah! Of course!” Aubrey said as she dug into her purse and pulled out a small card, holding it out for Hayden to take. “Here’s my business card. That’s my number there in the red. Just give me a call when you make your decision.” The card had Hillister Records at the top along with a picture of Aubrey and her number on underneath. “Hillister Records will really love having you all.”
Hayden watched as she walked away, taking a deep breath as she looked back down at the card. This card held her future. A future that held stardom she was unable to fathom, and a lovely reunion with Trevor after they did become famous.
