Music is popular with teenagers and revolutionaries alike. Neil Josten's time with perpetual garage band The Monsters — and twin menaces Kevin Day and Andrew Minyard — turns him into both.
Alternatively: in the span of three months, Neil learns how to write a song, kiss with tongue, play the guitar, rage against the system and fall in love. In that order.

okay so i can't reblog this ask answered by @sinistercacophony for some godforsaken reason that may or may not relate to me blowing up the tags with a rant on renee + class struggle, so here's an unasked for thought dump on renee walker both as a character and as a direct result of the simplification and purification of female characters in fandom.
cw for gang violence, poverty and generational trauma
first things first: renee's character is shaped by her childhood (and teenagehood) poverty. to ignore that and push upon her tons and tons of minority labels (i.e: asian, gay, trans, so on) without considering how that could have intersected with her place in a system who already wanted her dead in the first place is innocent at best and downright alienating at worst. there is no analysis or meta to be done about renee's character that does not link back to her poverty in one way or another, and it is fundamental that we are all well aware of how traumatic poverty — even by itself, stripped from its social consequences — is.
for every poor teenager who gets out of gang violence, there are a hundred more who don't. i want you to remember this, because that means renee is an exception: that means renee has friends, past lovers, past coworkers, even family that to this day have not been able to claw their ways out of poverty-induced gang violence the way renee has. that by itself should already be enough of a reminder that renee is a character with conflicting feelings towards both her past and present, those of which might never fully heal as she will never get the full closure of those relationships that ended so abruptly once she was removed from the streets.
class is inherent to renee's character both before and after she gets adopted by stephanie, a fairly well-off business woman who supposedly introduced renee to her religion and has not looked back ever since. there is no going back to before when it comes to renee's trauma, because it is systemic: if it is not happening to renee, then it's happening to someone else — some other kid who might be smarter or dumber than her, meaner or kinder than her, whose personality and appearance can be an entire 180 of renee's or not at all. to renee, getting out of that place meant someone else took her spot; the same way she took that man's place after she killed him. the poverty-to-gang violence pipeline is a circle, and it's not because renee broke out of it that everyone else that came before her was also able to do it.
these conversations are important because renee's is by far one of the most important backstories of aftg, and it is her character who moves things along when nothing else does. to filter renee to fit into a box or another is to erase everything that makes her more than just another one dimensional female character in ya, and to not understand the implications of class in her trauma is to turn a blind eye on how poverty can be a deeply traumatizing and debilitating experience. renee might not have gotten enough space in canon to show anything of deeper substance, but that doesn't mean anyone is entitled to sanding down her sharp edges to make her more likeable, easier to write and deal with, or a prop to andrew or neil to climb on top of narrative-wise.
tl;dr: we are exhausted of badly written depictions of renee walker. we really are. if this doesn't radicalize you, i don't know what will

i would like to introduce everyone to a new concept called "should i be writing andreil instead?" test. to know whether your fic passes it or not you need to ask yourself:
do kevin and andrew speak to each other for more than 3 lines about anything thats not neil, exy or some sort of argument/fight?
do all sides of the couple work together individually?
is kevin there for more than sex?
if the answers to all of these are no, ding ding ding! you should be writing andreil. stay away from poly couples

the foxes + andrew's vile ugly cat, catandrew
dan: can take it or leave it. she doesn't feel anything particularly pleasant for it but it doesn't creep her out like she thinks it should, considering how... interesting the animal's looks are, or how erratic and eerie his movements are. there might be a haunting story going on there, but dan chooses to think that's just how ugly cats are like.
kevin: is terrified of that thing. as a pisces be would like to know if anyone else thinks cats have something spirit-like going on, and he would like to ask catandrew himself, if he didn't hiss everytime kevin comes near him. andrew wakes up everyday and chooses to terrorize kevin with his cat, luring them into the same room or leaving them alone in the dorms or the appartment, force kevin to feed it through kevin's sense of sympathy over small ugly hungry things (as demonstrated by him taking neil under his wing many years ago). kevin will not let the animal starve, but he does think that a dog would be a lot less work psychologically speaking, and he informs andrew of his opinion on the matter, as he often does, but overall catandrew and kevin warm up to each other fast enough for andrew to feel kind of bitter about it.
matt: catandrew is always walking up to matt and trying to worm itself under his hand so he will pet it, and he does as requested. matt just has some good vibes, y'know? also if matt ignores it for too long the spiteful little creature will bite, so it's better to be safe.
aaron: no one involved will admit it, not even catandrew, but catandrew adores aaron. sometimes it may even rest on his shoulders and lick him. andrew says they're kisses, and the good reputation of his cat is one thing andrew strangely takes very seriously, even though he knows and encourages catandrew to be a little demon to then deny it at all costs, but to no avail: aaron dislikes the thing, and that's it. it doesn't matter if when no one is looking, aaron may kiss catandrew right back.
allison: she treats catandrew like the self-sufficient creature that it is, and catandrew respects her for it. she also thinks catandrew is a little demon and she tells everyone so, including catandrew. he hisses right back, but there's no heat behind it. they both feel no need to change the respectful distant nature of their relationship.
nicky: on principle, catandrew does not trust nicky because he makes a lot of sudden movements and is very loud, but if that were the matter, then andrew would also dislike nicky in a certain way. however, nicky usually gives the cat some treats that andrew would never allow, so catandrew can tolerate him at the very least.
renee: the situation is very tense and bizarre whenever renee and catandrew cross paths. it’s always like: renee eyes catandrew. catandrew eyes renee back. they have a sort of thing going on for a few seconds, mirroring each other’s stances, and there is an intimidating energy coming from both of them, like a warning. they both turn around and give each other their space. it's better this way, really.
neil: sometimes neil will just reach into his pocket or his backpack for his phone or a book only to pull out catandrew instead. however, catandrew does not want neil to touch him first and he will hiss and bite if its necessary, but he wants to be near neil, observing his movements, so catandrew himself can decide whether or not to put himself in such a position and when he will do so. neil's opinion on catandrew is similar to kevin's, minus the imminent fear; he thinks catandrew is a creepy, vile and strange little creature whose only purpose is to make andrew act very out of character as he treats the animal like he's raising it as a son, and the animal behaving almost like he understood this and accepted it. it reminds neil of the weird telepathic bond between andrew and kevin, in fact. he tells this to kevin, who goes into a ten minute rant and cries afterwards.

This is the Way the World Ends
aftg kandreil fic || dark academia || alternate universe || 172k || COMPLETE
Neil’s hand slips under Kevin’s sweater, fingers rubbing circles into the skin and sinew he finds. As their lips move together like warring ironclads in the Baltic, Kevin thinks he understands why Wilde said each man kills the thing he loves. After all, there must be no greater honor than to be cut down by the ones you’ve barred your soul to.
“Overwhelm me if it’s the last thing you do.”
reblog’s appreciated!
