I'm Not Okay (I Promise)

pairing: Elizabeth Donnelly x Reader

prompt: 13. "Please don't cry." & 14. "Everything's going to be fine eventually."

There was nothing you hated more than a problem in your life with seemingly no solution. You had always operated a certain way, which Elizabeth knew. The two of you had a good relationship. Somehow, you had found someone who you could coexist with perfectly. She understood you and all of your little quirks. Nobody had ever made an effort to understand you like that, so before Elizabeth, you'd given up hope it was possible. She loved you and you loved her. And that was why you had cut her slack in not noticing that anything was wrong.

"We don't talk as much anymore," Elizabeth noted to you one morning. It was random, said very casually as if she had no plan of follow through. You knew differently though; it was a tactic. Elizabeth knew you well, but you had also come to know her just as well.

"Things have been..." you trailed off in an attempt to find the right word. "Hectic, I suppose."

"Are you okay with that?" Elizabeth asked you. You weren't sure what it was that compelled your resolve to break, but in that moment it shattered. Before you even knew what was happening, Elizabeth was right there with her arms around you. "Everything's going to be fine eventually."

"I don't even know what's wrong," you said quietly. "How can anything get better when I can't figure out what's bad?"

"You don't have to look on your own." It was a simple reassurance. She was there for you, and she wasn't going anywhere. You had heard it a million times before, but this time it meant a little more. There was a weight behind her words, the offer for help when you were ready for it. You wouldn't even have to ask her for it, but she wouldn't hound you until you were ready for that.

"What would I do without you?" You hated that your voice was shaky with tears, but Elizabeth didn't shy away. Instead, she wiped them away with a soft brush of her thumb.

"Please, don't cry."

"I'm not trying to," you told her. Elizabeth laughed a little at that and pressed a kiss to your lips. "God, I'm a mess today."

"It's concerning how put together you are every other day. Everyone deserves a chance to not be okay."
