The tutor for my mixing class says I need this limiter plugin. Man I am not paying £100 for just a limiter. I wish I could hacker-montage it into my computer but alas I cannot.

Ok I'll admit it, despite my best attempts at avoiding it (due to a fear of being labeled an indiesadboy™). I am a huge fan of Alex G's music.
I honestly think it's one of the biggest influences on me musically, at the very least on my writing. I can't really explain why exactly, just the way the songs feel. They seem to gain access to some recess of my brain and flick a switch there that makes me think oh shit so that's what that horrible/amazing/whatever feeling sounds like. I honestly can't explain it better than that, it's like mainlining your own psyche.
Anyway, this interview with Him is really fascinating. And it got me thinking about how artists explain their writing process. I think it's almost always reductionist. I feel like it's never 'do more, more complex' it's always 'do less, more intentional' (not to say complexity is the opposite of intentionality!). And my guy Alex G gets that. At the end of the day, the final point, the final objective of any piece of music is to make you feel something. To resonate with you in some way. This might mean showing you something, bringing you from somewhere to somewhere else, empowering something you already feel, creating an entirely new cocktail of emotions (this one's my favourite) you get the idea, it's kind of impossible to quantify.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that when you're writing/making it's easy to get overwhelmed with all the options and possibilities, something that can be really intimidating when you want to create something meaningful. BUT it's important to remember that despite all the nitty-gritty minutiae, the goal is making your audience (but especially yourself) feel something(?). That's your North Star. And you should follow it, everything else is secondary.

For anyone who (like me) is completely baffled by compression and just fiddles with knobs without any real intention until something happens. This resource really helped me. It allows you to change compression parameters like attack, release, threshold etc and then shows you what that does to a waveform in real time. Really helpful to visualise what you're actually doing to the audio instead of just using your ears. You can then take that information and sort of imagine what the compressor is doing to the audio in your project. (tbh I wouldn't mind seeing a compression visualiser in a DAW that would be fucking sick)

While I'm here, this guy Mark Rodeo on YouTube (darkrodeo on bandcamp) is so fucking criminally underrated it's insane.
The guy gets like double digit views on some of the most mind-bending, thousand-yard-stare inducing videos I've seen in recent years. They're sooo awe inspiring and the music is beautiful.
The source link is to my personal favourite of his works. If I can get even one person to check him out I'll be doing the world a favour.

Day 1 update
I followed a bunch of tags including #audio thinking it was gonna be about audio engineering and the first 3 posts were all recordings of people jerking off...
Ok look I'm not saying I hated it, but it's 4pm on a Thursday. Also idk the rules here but #audio is a pretty general term not limited to sexual pursuits and the first 3 were all sexual. So just colour me surprised I guess.
Gotta be more specific next time.

Hello
Today marks the day I remembered this Tumblr account that I made when I was 15, how it has not been deleted after almost a decade I have no idea; But I'm treating it as an act of providence. Also I'm keeping the banner of me shooting someone in Unturned for posterity.
I don't know what I'm gonna post here, I make music now so probably stuff about audio and music production. But maybe other stuff too.
I have exactly zero followers so maybe this will be more like a diary idk but if I end up bringing some internet strangers along the way I love to overshare so,
works for me.
