However as more and more time passed, and Dream realised how deeply he loved Hob and how happy they were, he began to worry that someone would come along in the waking world and break Hob’s curse. Dream would lose his beloved forever, surely. So he made a plan to go to Hob’s body in the waking world and try to make sure that the curse simply could not ever be broken.

But he made a error and forgot the first law of fairytale. He couldn't help himself; he kissed his sleeping lover. And woke Hob up.

Now he doesn't know what to do! His beloved Hob has to spend half the day in the waking world, and Dream can't follow him there all the time. They only have the nights when Hob is asleep to be together. And Dream is terrified that Hob will find someone better in the waking world...

There is one solution: if they get married and Hob becomes consort of the dreaming, he will have privileges beyond that of a normal mortal. He can live in the dreaming permanently, if he chooses to. But will he accept Dream’s proposal?! Dream is so nervous, he's just not sure! But he has to try. He's the prince of stories, right? He can make this one come true!

I'm very drawn to the idea of Dream coming across Hob dead, just. By accident. Like maybe they were meant to meet, and he shows up at Hob’s home. Only to find that there's been a break-in and Hob interrupted the thieves, and got stabbed/shot/beaten to death. It pretty much just happened so Hob is lying in a pool of his own blood - maybe he's still actively dying and Dream tries to help, but he can't. So he has to watch Hob fade away, then stare at his corpse while the fatal injuries reset and he can finally come back to life.

Dream is a wreck. He's not even sure why it bothers him so much, when he knows that Hob will be okay in a minute or two. But sitting there with his friend's cold body is just awful. He starts spiralling and thinking about what it would be like if Hob ever did ask for death. What if he'd done it after 1889 or 1989, what if he'd given up? It would have been all Dream’s fault.

At this point Hob comes gasping back to life, already muttering angrily about thieves, and sees Dream sitting on the floor in about floods of tears, nearly hyperventilating. Hob is like "love? im fine, you know i can't die!" But Dream just can't stop crying. So the two of them end up lying on the floor together for a good while, clinging/holding each other while Hob recovers from dying and Dream....... emerges from his mental breakdown.

And then they have a cup of tea. Which makes everything feel a bit alright again. And Dream stays the night in a borrowed pair of Hob’s pyjamas. It's a nice reminder that Hob isn't going anywhere. He pinky promises.
