Me being happy that one of the firefighters on the firefighter show is finally canonically Bi despite never watching a single episode:

I continue to be amazed at the way some people in fandom insist that Ed wasn't abusive at any point in S2. He very much abused his power as captain over Fang, Frenchie and Jim.

Frenchie explains he deals with everything happening on the Revenge with Ed as captain by talking about the box he hides all the terrible things he's seen. Fang is clearly upset and crying and says he's never seen Blackbeard like this (maybe all the people insisting there was perfectly normal levels of piracy going on under Ed should rewatch that scene a few times?)

Jim, when Ed does his initial shitty apology, says Ed made them feel tortured and anxious.

We also see that Frenchie, Fang and Jim are triggered by things that remind them of their time under Ed as captain.

These three people were abused, and they were abused by Ed. And you can argue that Ed was in a suicidal spiral (which involved trying to get others killed as well), and that that suicidal spiral is completely Izzy's fault all you like, but the bottom line remains that Ed abused his power as captain over his crew members. It reeks of abuse apologism to argue otherwise.

I saw a post about 'real writing' vs 'fanfic' (OP was on the right side of the issue, saying of course they are one and the same). But it got me thinking about elevator pitches. If you want to publish traditionally, they'll tell you to come up with a just three or four sentences to sell your book and literally one of the suggestions that often comes up is 'compare it current popular things' like 'Oh, it's like if Lord of the Rings met When Harry Met Sally' . And then sometimes that's even used to pitch the book. We've all seen that style of ad.

So what is real here? When publishing houses are relying on AU pitches?

I think the great irony of the 'I hate children' kinds of posts is I think they're often made by the same people who get super upset when their whole generation is shit on by the older generation. Like what's the venn diagram of 'ok, boomer' and 'I hate children'? Because I have such bad news for you about what those kids are going to think of you one day.
