Violet had been anxiously waiting for her shift to end. After she had finished her side work, she could clock out and go pick up her brother from the airport. “Hey lady,” a voice said behind Violet “I know you are trying to get out of here early, but Micah sat two more at the bar, they said they just want some coffee.”  Violet sighed and rubbed her temples. “Thanks Jenny. I’ll take care of them.” Violet grabbed her phone and looked at the time. If these two people wanted coffee and finished in thirty minutes Violet would still have time to race to the airport. Approaching the two patrons from behind the bar Violet stopped in her tracks at the sight of the two men. A chill had run through her body, the last time she was alone with someone from the opposite sex, it was four guys who she had thought were her friends. It was one of the reasons she moved to Boston. “Are yer okay?” one of the men asked. Violet shook her head and put on a smile. “Yes, sorry about that, getting lost in my thoughts. Two coffees is that correct?” The men nodded. Violet placed saucers and cups on the bar and grabbed the coffee canister. “Let me know when.” Violet said. Pouring into the first cup in front of the gentleman with light brown hair, he signaled for Violet to stop halfway through. Moving to the other cup in front of the other gentleman with darker hair, Violet noticed matching neck tattoos. The second gentleman signaled for Violet to stop when the cup was nearly full to the top. The second gentleman threw packets of sugar at the first man. “You got any creamer?” The first man asked. “You and your fucking creamer.” “Just shut up, wouldn’t want the lass here to think we can’t behave ourselves” the first man replied. “I’ll be right back with some creamer.” Violet said as she disappeared into the back.
Before she grabbed the assortment of creamers from the cooler, Violet pulled out her phone. A text from her brother popped up on the screen: “My connecting flight is early so I will be there sooner than expected. Just text me your work address and I’ll get a ride there. We can eat and go from there. Cannot wait to my baby sis!!”  Violet felt like her planning was all for not, but it would help to eat at her job with a discount and she could pick up a couple extra hours if it came down to it. “11947 Huron Ave. the restaurant is called Pepper’s Gulch, just come sit at the bar when you get here. I’m so excited to see you!”  Violet tucked her phone away and returned to the men having their coffee. Placing the creamers in front of the first gentleman Violet couldn’t help but also notice the tattoos on their hands. “So, what is with the Truth and Justice tattoos?” Violet inquired. The men both whipped their heads up at Violet. “You speak Latin?” the man with dark hair asked. “Fluently, I learned it when I went to school.” Violet responded. “You never answered my question.” Violet finally said. The first gentleman flashed his hand. “Tis a long story, but they represent our values. I want the truth, and Murph here seeks out justice.”  Violet let out a giggle. “Is your name Murph or just short for something else?” “Murphy MacManus and this is my brother Conner.” The man with dark hair said. “Nice to meet you Murphy and you too Conner.” Violet said shaking each brother’s hand. “Violet!” A voice rang through the empty restaurant. “Sorry guys, I’ll be right back.” Violet said as she rushed toward the front of the establishment. “Yes Micah?”  “I need you to close tonight, you can go home and rest after these guys finish up, okay?” the manager said. “I actually have plans tonight. Remember, I put in time off because my brother is coming into town?” Violet replied. “Yeah, about that, I’ll have to cancel it so you can close.” Micah said. “Oh, well I’m sure we can tell Mel and have her cancel it?” Violet said coyly. “Uh well, uh.” Micah stuttered. “Nope that’s fine, I will have someone else fill in tonight, no need to tell Mel.” Micah said walking away.
Violet smiled and turned on her heel back to the brothers. “What are ya smilin’ for? Was that your boyfriend?” Murphy asked. “No just the asshole manager, who I’m sure is trying to make my life hell for not taking him up on his offer to go on a date with him.” Violet replied as she grabbed a bowl of fruit from the mini fridge behind the bar. “Is it because you already have a boyfriend?” Connor asked. Violet laughed. “No, I don’t have a boyfriend. I’m more focused on my studies at the moment.” “And what is it that yer studying?” Conner asked. “I have been selected as part of an internship for the upcoming summer at Harvard law school.” Violet responded as she gathered a cutting board and small knife. “Ah a lawyer. Well, isn’t that exciting, so are you going to wear fancy suit and defend bad guys?”  Connor furthered. “What? Like the mafia! No, they are the reason I am studying to become a lawyer.” Violet said angerly. “I’m sorry, no I want to defend the people who are victims to people like the mafia, I want their family to get justice.” Violet said quietly. “I meant no harm by it lass. Just asking, most the people who are lawyers in this town are in the pockets of the mafioso.” Connor said. The rest of the time was spent with Violet cutting up fruit for the bar and the brothers joking back and forth. “What do we owe ya for the coffee?” Murphy asked as he was pulling out his wallet. “Oh nothing, I loved listening to you to talk about your day and joking around.” Violet said. “At least let us tip you!” Connor added. The brothers both laid down five dollars each. “Before you go, I have to know who the older brother is?” Violet inquired. The brothers smiled at each other then at Violet. “Who do you think is the older one?” Connor asked. “Hmm, well, I would go off the coffee, but based on the conversation I would say Murphy.” Violet said pointing to Murphy. “Am I right?” Murphy just smirked at his brother. Connor just glared. “Actually,” Connor started “We’re twins, and we don’t know who the older one is, our mother won’t ever tell us.” Connor finished. “But ya did boost my ego, thank you for that lass.” Murphy exclaimed. The brothers left the restaurant shoving one another and laughing.

As the SUV pulled in front of the venue everyone was in awe. A small lively man approached the vehicle. “Can I help you?” The man asked. Maya rolled down her window. “Hi, I’m Maya Atwell, I’m the opening act for tonight.” The little man called over the radio confirming the information he was given. After a few seconds a voice called to him informing him that Maya was the opener. “Okay, go around back, there is a spot by the buses where you can park. Here is your pass, the rest of your party will have theirs waiting with security.” The small man instructed. Rooster pulled into an alley and saw two large tour buses. A security stopped them. Maya once again informed the security guard of who she was, flashed her pass and they were shown to their parking spot. As the group exited the SUV and walked towards the back door Maya stopped them. “The owner of the venue is a friend of mine, and he is allowing everyone as a gift to Phoenix and a favor to me, so don’t go getting too rowdy. Understood?” Maya asked. Everyone nodded their heads following Maya inside the venue. A familiar face greeted the group. “Hey Cody, I was told you have some passes for my friends here.” Said Maya. “Hey!” The big guard said. “Yeah, here we go, I’m also your point of contact for tonight. For all of you tonight.” Cody said looking over the group. As he handed out their passes the group said thank you and followed him as he led them to a dressing room. “Soundcheck is in ten minutes. I’ll be out here waiting.” Cody said. The daggers settled on the furniture in the room. Maya hung up her clothes, laid out her make up and got her hair tools plugged in. “Okay you guys can chill here while I do sound check.” Maya said, leaving the room. The daggers couldn’t believe they were backstage, let alone in a dressing room. “Phoenix, your friend is really cool.” Mickey said. “Yeah. She has always been the cool friend, but this takes the cake.” Phoenix remarked.
After a while Maya returned to the room. Stripping off her shirt, Maya sat at the mirror in her tank top starting to curl her hair. Phoenix and Maya moved around the mirror in silence as they got Maya ready. Once her makeup and hair were done Maya pulled out her outfit. Changing in the bathroom Maya emerged looking like a rock star. “Okay. Nat you want to do our thing?” Maya asked. “You know it would be a proper show if we didn’t do our thing.” Natasha replied. The men looked confused. What were the girls talking about. Maya and Natasha touched their foreheads together and placed their palms together. “Mom, dad, I know you’re here.” Maya started. “Tommy, Steven, Paul and Freddie we know you’re here.” Natasha said. “Gene, Slash, Vince, and Jimi allow me strength.” Maya said. “Petty, Morrison, Jagger and Idol lend your sex appeal.” Natasha said. “Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie, Janis Joplin and Grace Slick this is a tribute to you! In the name of rock n roll!” Both the women shouted. Hugging each other, the women let out some laughs. “That is some ritual.” Javy said. A knock came at the door. “Come in!” Maya yelled. “Hey Maya, are you ready?” Cody asked his friend. Maya nodded her head. The group followed the security guard to the side stage. “Okay, here are your guitars, and some extra picks.” Cody said, pointing to a stand that had two electric guitars and an acoustic guitar on it. The lights in the venue dimmed down and the crowd cheered. Maya gave one last hug to Natasha and grabbed an acoustic guitar. During her opening number Maya looked poised and calm. Jake couldn’t help but look at her in amazement. The powerhouse voice Jake heard on his first day in Vegas still sent chills through him hearing it again. Bob noticed the look of admiration on Jake’s face and nudged him a little. Jake turned to him. “You picked a good one.” Bob reassured him. “I know I felt nothing for other girls in the past, but man she has me mesmerized.” Jake replied. Towards the end of her set, Maya signaled something to Cody. “Okay guys, just walk out on the stage, wave and come back.” Cody instructed. The daggers were completely lost but did as they were told. “I want everyone to give a big thank you to the brave naval aviators here tonight.” Maya said. As the daggers went out on the stage and waved the crowd erupted in cheers. “Thank you, Las Vegas!” Maya shouted. The group walked off the stage. Maya exploded with happiness. “Oh, I can’t believe I just played a real show!” Maya shouted. The group gave Maya a big bear hug and congratulated her on her set. The group was led back to the dressing room while the stagehands set up for the main act. After hearing the crowd got loud again Maya knew it meant Florida Georgia Line was on.
“Okay, let’s get back out there to watch these guys.” Said Maya. The group once again walked out to the side of the stage to watch the country duo perform. After their third song Maya turned to Phoenix. “I have a surprise for you.” Maya said. Before Phoenix could respond Cody was guiding her onto the stage. “Please welcome a special guest.” Tyler Hubbard said. “Lieutenant Natasha Trace to the stage.” Brian Kelley finished. Natasha was crying as she was embraced by the two men. “Now we heard a rumor that it is your birthday. Is that true?” Tyler asked. Natasha just nodded her head overwhelmed with happiness. “Well, you know that means we have to sing you a song. I want everyone here tonight to sing Happy Birthday with us to Natasha.” Brian said. The whole venue sang Happy Birthday to Natasha. Even more tears rolled down her face. Getting another hug from the duo Natasha waved to the crowd and rejoined her friend on the side. Throwing her arms around Maya, Natasha just kept thanking her friend over and over again. “It was no big deal; I knew you would like it.” Maya said. After the set ended the country act joined the group. “We are heading over to La Rumba for a little after party if y’all want to join us?” Tyler offered. “We would love to.” Maya answered. “Great, we have a couple things to take care of, and we’ll meet you there. Tell them you’re with Kelley Hubbard and they’ll let you in.” Brian added. The duo walked away and left the group in shock. “Let’s not stand around waiting for them.” Maya said. Walking back to grab her things Maya felt like the night could only get better and better. Meeting the daggers in the SUV Maya was smiling ear to ear. Guiding them to La Rumba Maya was overcome with joy. As promised the group got in using the name given to them. The daggers were flagged down by the country act at a VIP table. The large group party for a while. Maya, who knew she would have to drive back, only drank a little to keep herself sober enough to get behind the wheel. Stepping outside to smoke a cigarette Maya felt a wave of relaxation wash over her. “Couldn’t help but fall in love with your set.” A voice said. Maya felt a chill run up her spine. She knew that voice. She had hoped to never hear that voice again. “You’ve come a long way from the 18-year-old who followed me here.” The voice spoke. “Leave me alone Elijah. You stay away from me, and I stay away from you. That was the deal!” Maya gritted through her teeth. “But I heard you were thinking of leaving for California. That will be hard to do considering you still owe a few people favors.” Elijah snickered. “You don’t know anything about my favors, so stay the hell away.” Maya yelled. A few party goers and the daggers were outside watching Maya and Elijah shout at each other. As Maya flicked her cigarette butt in Elijah’s direction, she told him the conversation was finished. Elijah grabbed Maya by the arm pulling her back in front of him. “Let go of me!” Maya yelled. Elijah just laughed. As the men started to rush over to Maya and Elijah they watch as Maya balled up her fist. Landing a left hook. Elijah spun and fell to the ground unconscious. The dagger squad looked in bewilderment as Maya cradled her now throbbing fist. Jake was the first one to break the silence. “Who knew you were a southpaw. That was spectacular.” Walking over to Maya Jake cupped her face in his hands and gave her a well-deserved kiss. “Well, I don’t like it but if you like him, I’ll accept it. Just let me know if you ever lay out Bagman like that.” Phoenix joked. The group headed back inside to finish the night.
As Maya herded the now drunken daggers, she couldn’t stop thinking about how Elijah knew she was leaving for California. This thought ate away at Maya as she drove home with the aviators slurring their words to the songs playing on the radio. It reminded Maya of the old sailors in movies that would sing their sea shanties. Finally arriving at the house, the daggers were ready to pass out. Phoenix left to one of the bathrooms to shower. Maya took the opportunity to fill in the rest of the squad on the plans. “So, tomorrow, we are going to explore the strip and have dinner at a restaurant at Caesar's palace. Then another club. On Monday we have a private cabana reserved at the Bellagio cypress pool club. Tuesday we’ll explore the strip more and have dinner at Hell’s Kitchen. After that we’ll figure it out.” Maya said. Turning to a half-asleep Bradley. “Rooster, I made a couple calls and okayed it with someone by the name of Pete Mitchell to give you and Phoenix an extra night. I have arranged for a private dinner at Cipriani. Keep in mind this is on her actual birthday so don’t ruin it.” Maya ordered. “OOOOH” the daggers let out in unison. “Shut up.” Rooster yelled. One by one the daggers drifted into their rooms for a much-needed good night’s sleep. The last one in the living room was Jake. With his eyes closed, Jake was humming Jeopardy tune. Maya just rolled her eyes. How could this tall goofball be someone who could hurt her. She never understood Natasha’s reasonings and she wasn’t going to start. Tapping Jake on the foot Maya was expecting him to just keep humming. Instead, his eyes shot open, and a grin grew across his face. “Want me to join you downstairs? Or do you want to stay in my room tonight?” Jake asked. Maya was shocked, he had taken the question out of her mouth. “Well, it is my house so why don’t we go to the basement.” Maya replied. As the two stood up Jake Grabbed Maya and pulled her into his embrace. With no music Jake started to sway. Maya wasn’t sure what he was trying to do so she just swayed with him for a while. “Let’s go lay down, Bagman.” Maya teased. “No, no, no, only those guys call me that. You can call me anything besides that. Okay sweetheart.?” Jake said leaning down to kiss Maya. The kiss started slow but eventually became sloppy. Maya bit Jake’s bottom lip. Releasing a moan from the aviator. Maya couldn’t help but giggle. The intoxicated Jake was so easy to tease. “Come one Jake let’s go lay down. We’re going to have a long day tomorrow.” Maya said. “Couldn’t we just hang out here tomorrow?” Jake asked. “Nice try. If we stay here tomorrow, we won’t be getting anything done.” Maya said. “I know that’s the point.” Jake replied. Maya turned around and took Jake’s hand into her own. Leading him downstairs Maya got her way and eventually got Jake to go to sleep. Maya couldn’t sleep much. She spent the night tossing and turning. The thought of Elijah knowing her next move was something she hadn’t anticipated. How in the hell did he know she was leaving soon. More importantly who told him. Finally around two am Maya was able to fall asleep.

Summary: Jake realizes he might actually like Maya. Phoenix is none to pleased with this.

Jake rolled over and reached for Maya only to grab pillows and some of the blanket. He laid there for a second remembering the events that transpired. Jake could still smell the warm vanilla scent from Maya on her pillows. Still in his underwear Jake got out of the bed and looked around for something to cover up with. On a chair he saw his clothes from the night before folded up with a note on top.  There are some sweatpants and some old T-shirts in the closet if you want to borrow some more comfortable clothes. Jake crossed the room and opened the closet door. A plethora of oversized clothes hung neatly organized by color and style. Jake grabbed a pair of black sweatpants and a green shirt that had another band logo on it. Peeking his head into the studio to see if maybe Maya had gone in there Jake found no one. Upstairs he heard some noise. The daggers were all probably raiding the kitchen for much needed hangover cures. Walking up the steps Jake couldn’t help but be thankful he hadn’t drunk too much last night. Thinking he could start to give everyone shit for their hangovers, Jake emerged ready to let loose. The only person he saw was Bob. “Hey Floyd, have you seen Maya?” Jake inquired. “Yeah, her and Natasha went out for some supplies. They should be back soon.” Bob answered. Jake sighed; he had hoped to see Maya in the morning. That was something that helped Jake determine a next step with girls was how they looked in the morning. He thought about Maya in just a t-shirt with messy hair and a voice as soft as her blankets. Getting lost in his thoughts, Jake hadn’t noticed Javy and Mickey escorting the girls they had been with, out the front door. It wasn’t until Javy placed a hand on Jake’s shoulder that made him snap back to reality. “So, bro where did you disappear to last night?” Javy asked. “Come on, when have you known me to share my secrets.” Jake joked, not wanting to reveal he was with Maya. “Looks like you got lucky though?” Jake asked. “Yeah, Twins, but I had to take one for the team. Mickey was the one who got lucky. My twin just wanted to cuddle.” Javy responded. Before Jake could inquire about Mickey the front door swung open, a tired Natasha walked in with a couple jugs of orange juice. Maya followed right behind her with a couple grocery bags in her hands.
“Good morning, everyone. I’ll be making some breakfast and we have the stuff for mimosas. Little hair of the dog for those who need it.” A cheerful Maya said walking into the kitchen. “Do you need any help?” Bob asked. “You know I think I got it, but if you want to help, I could use a good back popping, I think I slept on it wrong or something.” Maya said. Jake couldn’t help but smirk. Whether Maya was telling the truth or just covering up the real reason, he knew her back was hurting because of him. Bob walked over to Maya and had her cross her arms over her chest, embracing her from behind Bob picked up Maya and squeezed her. A couple pops rippled through Maya as a look of relief washed over her. “Thank you.” Maya said as she unpacked the rest of the groceries. As the last two woke up, Jake’s wish of getting Maya alone again wasn’t going to happen any time soon. He resided him at the counter across from Maya watching her cook. Natasha finished making a mimosa for everyone; their first drink of the day. “So, I have to go to work here in a little bit, until three. There is an extra car, the keys are hanging up by the door in the garage. Go get your things and I’ll meet you back here.” Maya said to Natasha. “Okay, is there anything we need that I can grab while we’re out?” Natasha asked “Uh! NO! Hello, are you still drunk? What did we just do?” Maya shouted. Natasha mocked her friend quietly and stuck her tongue out at her when she wasn’t looking. Jake couldn’t help but notice how the two women did act like siblings. After a while Jake drifted out to the back patio joining the men of the dagger squad. “I hope we get to go to a strip club soon, I have a wad of cash that is burning a hole in my pocket.” Javy threw out. “Javy you wouldn’t know what to do if a beautiful women came up to you asking for a dance.” Mickey joked. “Okay, here you go. Green chili, eggs, potatoes and bacon. There are also tortillas in the kitchen. I have to go get ready and head out.” Maya said making herself a small bowl of food. The daggers wasted no time getting their plates ready. “Mm! Who knew she could make chili. I might make her mine just on the promise of her cooking alone.” Rueben said. “I might have already beat you to it.” Jake said, thinking it would pass over. However, Natasha caught the remark. “What did you say?” she asked sharply looking at Jake. “Nothing.” Jake remarked. Tension started to build in the air. Jake finished his second plate and disappeared into the house. Even with Jake out of sight the energy coming from Natasha could not be ignored. While the rest of the daggers departed into the house to get ready Natasha stayed outside trying to plan what she was going to say to Jake. She knew once he had his sights set on someone it was hard to talk him out of it. However, this was Natasha’s best friend in the entire world. The person she could call to help her hide a body. There was no way Natasha was going to let Jake do what he was known for to her person. As the rest of the men came back outside, Bob, tried to talk Natasha down from the ledge he could see her ready to jump from. “Your friend looks like she could chew Jake and spit him out. Don’t fight him, let him make a fool out of himself.” Bob said. “It’s not that, I just don’t want him to have the chance to make a fool out of himself.” Natasha said. “Let’s just go to the hotel, pick up our things and cool off?” Bob suggested. “Okay, but I need to say something to him, so he knows to stay away from Maya.” Natasha finished. Bob just nodded his head and walked away from Natasha. Before long the daggers took the extra car left for them back to their hotel to grab their bags. To much of the relief of everyone Natasha was settled in the back of the SUV and Jake was the one driving. Pulling into the hotel, Jake was blissfully unaware of the chewing coming his way. As the daggers went to their rooms, Natasha followed Bob into the room he checked into with Jake.
As the others grabbed their bags they piled into Bob and Jake’s shared room. Natasha felt she needed to make it known to the whole group that they were to stay away from her friend. “Okay, I need to make you aware of some things.” Natasha started. “While she has been a ray of sunshine and a gracious host, Maya is not one to play with or fool around with. She has been through too much and needs someone who will stick around. Not a quick fling.” Natasha said looking exclusively at Jake. “Phoenix” Mickey started. “No! This is not up for discussion. She’s my friend and you’re my friends as well and I don’t want to be in the middle of it. I will always pick Maya over you guys, no offense.” She let out. “Calm down Nix, no one is going to make you pick.” Jake let out, still oblivious that Natasha was addressing only him. “Listen Bagman. Stay away from my friend. She is not your plaything while we’re out here.” Natasha retorted. “Well, that might be too late. We might have slept together last night. But I promise I’m not going to hu” Jake was cut off by Natasha lunging at him. The room erupted into chaos. Natasha on top of Hangman trying to land a blow, she was being pulled by Mickey, Rueben and Rooster. The three men held Natasha back and guided her to the window. “Natasha calm down okay, just calm down.” Rooster said. “Seresin, you end it now or I will do it for you!” Natasha shouted. “I don’t need this. Javy, will you grab my bags, I’m out of here. I’ll be on the strip; I’ll find my way back to the house.” Jake said as he exited the room. Walking out into the hot day, Jake couldn’t help but curse himself and the hot day. Walking to The House of Blues Jake didn’t know where Maya was but he figured he could start where he first met her and try to pry some information out of those who knew Maya. Walking into the club, Jake was one of three people in the place. With no server in sight Jake sat at the bar. To his luck the same bartender was working this morning. “Hi soldier. What can I get you?” Lola asked. “The number of Maya Atwell.” Jake replied flatly. “Still working on that one huh?” Lola said. “Yes and no. Her friend is a friend of mine, and we are staying at Judy’s place, and I just want to let her know we got separated. She went to work this morning and she didn’t say where.” Jake said half telling the truth. “Well if you’re out at Judy’s place then you actually know Maya. Let me write down her number for you. It’s Saturday so she is probably at The Mint Tavern.” Lola said as she wrote down ten digits. “Thank you so much Lola.” Jake left a ten on the bar for her. Leaving The House of Blues Jake hailed a cab and let the driver know to drive to the tavern where Maya worked.
The short ride to the tavern gave Jake enough time to wonder what Natasha meant by Maya has been through a lot. As he paid the cab driver, Jake was still wondering what Maya had been through. Walking into the nearly empty tavern, Jake couldn’t immediately see Maya. He once again settled at the bar. Waiting for a bartender Jake was starting to lose hope that he was in the wrong place. An older lady came out of a door with Maya following behind her. Both were carrying cases of wine. Jake knew Maya hadn’t seen him yet, so he cleared his throat. Both women looked at Jake. The older lady said something to Maya and disappeared behind the door. Maya walked over to Jake. “I thought you were supposed to be at the house or hotel?” Maya said. “Yeah, well I needed to get away from those guys. You never gave me your number, so I had to track you down. Your friend Lola gave it to me.” Jake let out waiving a napkin around. Maya let out a chuckle. “Well, I have to help set up our new part of the bar if you want to help, or I could have Joan make sure your glass is never empty” Maya suggested. “I’ll just sit here for a few. I have a few things I need to mull over.” Jake answered. Maya nodded and walked away. Joan came out and studied Jake before she asked him for his drink order. “I’ll take a long island iced tea.” Jake answered. Joan whipped up Jake his drink and went back to help her counterpart. Waiting for Maya to get off work Jake had a total of four long island iced teas. A little tipsy Jake knew he had to ask Maya about her past. Saying goodbye to her friend, Maya headed in Jake’s direction. “Okay Ken doll you ready to go back to the house and get ready for a concert?” Maya asked. “Yeah, let’s go before I get too drunk.” Jake said. Walking to her car Maya could help but ask why Jake was on his own. “Phoenix yelled at me for getting involved with you and I left because three of the boys held her back and I didn’t want to be around the rest because I didn’t want to answer their questions.” Jake said. “Oh, I see. Well, you have to understand Natasha is like my big sister. You have to take what she says with a grain of salt. Don’t let it get you down fly boy.” Maya stated. “What else did Natasha have to say?” Maya asked. “That you have been through a lot and you need someone who will be around. What have you been through Maya? I know about your ex, kind of. But she made it sound like your life has been nothing but tragedy.” Jake uttered. Taking a second to unlock her car and getting into the driver’s side Maya knew this would come up. Jake slipped in the passenger side waiting for an answer. “First off, she has no right to tell you guys that and second, I have had a lot happen to me and some people might chalk it up to be tragedy, but it made me who I am, so I like to think of it as character development.” Maya answered. Her reply was enough for Jake. Pulling out of her parking spot Maya turned her radio to a classic rock station. The ride to the house was filled with Jake and Maya singing along to Aerosmith, Guns n Roses, and Journey. As the two walked into the house they didn’t think about what was waiting for them. A silence fell over the house when Jake and Maya walked in.
Studying their faces Maya noticed one was missing. “Where’s Natasha?” Maya asked. “Right here, we need to talk.” Natasha said, grabbing her friend by the arm. Walking to Natasha’s room Maya couldn’t help but roll her eyes as she was being dragged. Sitting on an unmade bed Maya braced herself for the lecture she was about to receive. After Natasha shut the door, she sat across from her friend. “What the hell are you thinking?” Natasha asked. “What do you mean?” Maya said coyly. “You know what I mean. You and Jake? I mean he’s not a bad guy, but he’s not made for long term relationships. Do you really want to get hurt again? Because I can guarantee Jake will hurt you.” Natasha let out. “Nat, I’m a big girl. I can take care of myself, besides who said I was looking for a serious relationship?” Maya responded. “Maya, I know you, you don’t do flings, but if you say you can take care of yourself than who am I to say anything. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you.” Natasha finished. The women exited the bedroom. “Okay!” Maya shouted. “Let’s get ready and head over to The Chelsea for Florida Georgia Line!” The daggers jumped up and went to their respective rooms to get their best looks together. Maya and Natasha got ready in the basement together. “What are you wearing?” Maya inquired. “I have this cute crop top and a jean skirt, or I have these jeans I could wear with my cowgirl boots.” Natasha said unsure. Two women looked over the outfits. “I think you should wear your jeans, but I have some shirts you can go through.” Maya suggested as she pulled back her hair. “What are you going to wear?” Natasha asked. “Ripped jeans, my black boots, a grey t-shirt and a flannel.” Maya said. “Wow, you are so sure of you outfit.” Natasha replied. “No, actually I had to try some on and get approval from their manager, this was the most suitable.” Maya said. After deciding on what to wear and pack with them the two women made their way upstairs. All of the men looked very handsome. Maya made them aware of this by whistling. Instantly they all smiled and blushed. Maya, who looked like she was in the middle of getting ready, had a couple backpacks in her hands. It was now four o’clock. Sound check was in 45 minutes. “Okay, let’s get into the SUV and head over there for soundcheck. Who has the keys?” said Maya leading everyone outside. Rooster shook the keys already getting into the driver’s seat. As the last person got into the vehicle Rooster started his drive to the venue.

The drive to the edge of Vegas was filled with Bob and Fanboy in the back seat talking about work. While in the front Jake and Maya were stealing glances at one another. Before long Maya pulled up to a house that was in the middle of nowhere. “This is your place?” Fanboy asked. “It’s more like a rental from a friend. You’re lucky she isn’t here; you boys are all her type. But you would have to be gentle, she has a bad hip.” Maya said parking the car in the driveway. Maya was the first one to exit her car, she walked over to the cab driver and waited for him to roll down his window. “Thanks, Arturro. Here’s fifty for coming out here.” Maya said, handing the cab driver two twenties and a ten. “Oh, miss Maya, you know I can’t accept that.” The elderly driver protested. “Well, that’s too bad. Say hi to Arturro jr. for me.” Maya shot back dropping the cash in the vehicle. Walking up her driveway to greet the daggers, Maya couldn’t help but feel nervous, this was her sanctuary, the place where her and Judy had many heart to hearts, it was her creative space, and she was about to let a bunch of clean-cut military personal into her and Judy’s eclectic world. She stopped at the front door. “Before I let everyone in, remember this is not officially my house. It is my friend Judy’s house; she is away for the time being. Please make yourselves at home, but anything destroyed or ruined is on me. Understood?” Maya prompted the daggers. Everyone nodded their heads. Maya unlocked the front door and let the squad into her home.
“Before everyone else gets here, let me give you a tour.” Maya said, shutting the door. Setting her purse on the counter she got in front of everyone. “So, this is the kitchen, pantry is out in the garage.” She said pointing to a door off to the side of the kitchen. “This is the living room slash dining room; out back is the patio. There is a pool and a hot tub. Down this way,” Maya continued. “Are some of the spare rooms, there are four with two beds each. We have a bathroom on this side as well. At the end of the hallway is a small gym workout area. Down at the other end are a couple more spare rooms, those only have one bed per room. There is also a bathroom, as well as a half bathroom. There is also the master bedroom with the master bath attached.” Maya said taking the daggers through the house. Walking everyone back to the main area Maya stopped in front of a door along the wall. “This leads to the basement; the washer and dryer are down there. As well as my room and the music studio. That is the only part of the house that is off limits. If you are invited then that’s fine, but it is by invite only. In each room the closets have clothes, they are unisex so just find something that fits, and you can wear it. We also have shorts in the gym for anyone who wants to go into the pool.” Maya finished. There was a knock at the door. Maya walked over and opened it up to find some of her other friends arriving. “Hey guys, come on in!” Maya said, opening the door to a larger group of people. Soon, the living room was flooded with people. The daggers went to pick out rooms and change. Maya sat on the sofa texting a couple more friends. Waiting for the daggers to reemerge. Fanboy, Coyote and Payback wasted no time joining Maya’s friends in the back. Bob wasn’t so sure, so he hung back inside in his clothes. Rooster and Jake were talking in the kitchen.
Phoenix finally emerged from her room. “Ashes! Do you have anything I could wear for the pool?” Natasha asked. “Yeah, let’s go to my room and find you something.” Maya said, leading her friend down to the basement. Entering her room Maya crossed the room to her dresser. “Wow.” Phoenix exclaimed. “You really are going to leave this all behind?” Phoenix asked her friend. “You know me Nix, I can’t stay in one place for too long. Besides, Judy said I can come back anytime.” Maya said grabbing a bikini for her friend. “Here, see if that fits you.” Maya said, throwing the swim suite on her bed. Maya grabbed an oversize t-shirt, spandex shorts and a pair of grey sweatpants for herself. “So, there is something I have to tell you. A little birdie told me that Rooster likes you. I think you should go for it to be honest.” Maya said pulling her Clash shirt over her head. “No way! Who told you?!” Phoenix asked. “Your friend Hangman.” Maya replied. “First off, he is not my friend more like a rock in my shoe and second; he can’t be trusted, he’s always trying to pull something I wouldn’t be surprised if he said that to rile you up. You didn’t tell him I liked Rooster, did you?” “No, he just said Rooster likes you and he thinks you two could be good together.” Maya replied. Phoenix let out a sarcastic laugh. “I don’t know how true that could be coming from Jake. Let’s not think about it, let’s go continue this party!” Natasha yelled. The two friends made their way up the stairs to rejoin everyone else. When they emerged from downstairs the only three men in the house had gone silent at the sight of Phoenix in the pale blue bikini, she borrowed from Maya. The two women laughed and made their way to the backyard. Phoenix jumped in the pool and joined the group of guys that were talking to Fanboy and Payback. Maya sat at one of the tables watching her friends all mingle. Bob, Hangman and Rooster made their way outside too. Rooster sat with Maya at the table. “Maya what was Natasha like when you two were young?” Rooster prompted. “She was a little kooky, she was the one my parents deemed a bad influence for a while.” Maya replied. “I would have never thought that.” Rooster said. Both were watching the group in the pool. A few of Maya’s friends pulled Phoenix out of the pool, and they started dancing with her. Rooster let out a frustrated sigh. Maya watched as Rooster started to clench his fist. “Relax Bradley, those guys mean nothing to her. I’m going to ask you something and I just need a straight answer. Do you like Natasha?” Maya asked. Rooster took a second to answer. Searching Maya’s face, he finally answered. “Yes, but she only likes me as a friend. So, I don’t want to get my hopes up.” “What if I told you I know for a fact she feels the same way? What if I told you that she is also afraid you won’t reciprocate and her putting herself out there would ruin your friendship?” Maya threw out. Maya watched as Rooster’s eyes began to widen. “You’re serious?” He asked. “I don’t play around when it comes to Phoenix. I suggest you make the first move though; she’ll be too concerned about ruining the friendship.” Maya said. Her eyes now drifting to Bob who made his way to the table. “Hey Bob, how’s my favorite ginger ale drinker?” Maya asked. “I’m okay, how are you, Maya?” Bob responded. Maya didn’t respond as she looked over Bob’s shoulder as saw Jake making out with one of the girls that had showed up. Maya couldn't hide the displeasure on her face. Bob noticed this and turned around to see the same sight that made Maya upset. “Maya are you okay?” Bob asked. “This is unbelievable. I kissed him less than an hour ago and he wanted to ‘do it right’ Maya said with air quotes. “But here he is with his tongue down that girl’s throat. I’m going to the studio. You can come if you want to.” Maya said extending an invite to Bob. “Sure, I’ve never been in a music studio before.”
The two walked into the house past Jake and the girl that was hanging on him, down into Maya’s studio. When Maya opened the door Bob was blown away by the size of it. “How did you manage to get this put in?” Bob prompted. “Judy had it put in for her grandson, he uses it when he comes through town, but for the time being it’s mine.” Maya replied. While the party was going on upstairs Maya walked bob through the process of making a song. They played with the soundboard on a couple different songs. Then Maya showed Bob how recording a song was played around with. “Come in here and I’ll show you a few simple notes.” Maya said. Bob walked into the recording booth and took the seat Maya was sitting on. Maya handed Bob a guitar and stood behind him. “Okay put your fingers here and play that note.” Bob followed Maya’s instructions and played A minor. “Good, now move your fingers here and play.” Bob once again obliged and played an E major with a raised fifth. Soon Maya had taught Bob how to play Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin. “This was fun, maybe you can show me some other songs.” Bob said. “But I think for now I’m going to go to bed. Thank you for showing me the studio.” Bob said putting down the guitar. “Good night, Maya.” Bob called out. “Night Bob!” Maya said back. Maya sat in the booth playing around with different riffs when she heard a knock at the door. “I thought you were going to bed?” Maya said not looking up to see Jake was at the door. “Not yet.” Jake said. Maya whipped her head up. Her blood started to boil. “This is an invite only and you’re not welcomed here. Besides don’t you have a Barbie upstairs to make out with?” Maya asked sharply. “Yeah, she isn’t really my type.” Jake said still standing in the doorway.
“I find that hard to believe.” Maya shot back. “No really. I like long dark hair and blue eyes. Someone who is a little shorter than I am and isn’t afraid to say what’s on her mind or put people in their place. Someone who loves bourbon. That’s my type.” Jake finished. Making his way from the doorway to the soundboard Jake stood with his hands in his pockets looking at Maya. Maya looked at Jake for a second before she set down her guitar and left the sound booth. “Look I don’t know what you want but, I don’t want my feelings played with.” Maya stated. Making her way over to Jake. Jake stood in silence. “I’m not someone who can just hook up with someone and not feel anything. I don’t play any ga” Jake didn’t let Maya finish as he closed the space between them and kissed Maya. When she tried to pull away Jake grabbed her by the back of her neck and deepened the kiss. Maya thought about trying to pull away again, but she loved how Jakes lips felt on hers. To Maya’s surprise Jake pulled away. “I would never play with your feelings.” Jake said before he pulled Maya back in for more kisses. When Jake’s hands started to roam Maya could feel a tight feeling building up in her stomach. She hadn’t been intimate with a man like this for some time. Slowly Maya pushed the flannel Jake was wearing off his shoulders and arms onto the floor. Jake followed and lifted Maya’s shirt over her head revealing her bare body. Jake took a second to admire Maya. “Let me shut the door.” Maya said walking away from Jake. After shutting the door Maya turned around and finished undressing herself. Standing in nothing but her blue lace panties Maya felt the tight feeling coming back as she watched Jake strip down to just his boxers. Jake once again closed the space between them and feverishly kissed Maya all over her chest and shoulders. Jake’s hands found their way onto Maya’s hips. Squeezing both sides released a moan from Maya. Spinning herself and Jake around Maya led the way to a couch so she and Jake could move forward. Maya pulled away and laid on the couch waiting for Jake to follow. Jake got on top of Maya. Just as Maya went to pull off her panties Jake grabbed her hands. “No leave them on, I’ll just push them to the side.” Jake commanded. Just as he promised Jake used one hand to push aside the lace panties and started rubbing Maya’s clit. The small circles caused Maya to arch her back. It felt so good to have a man touching her. Before long Maya felt the tight sensation building and building. “Oh fuck, don’t stop, don’t stop.” Maya breathed out. “Yeah? You going to cum already?” Jake asked. Before either one could react the building sensation finally came to a climax. “That’s a good girl. Think you have one more for me?” Jake questioned pulling off his boxers. Maya just nodded her head.
Jake took her answer and started rubbing his cock along her slit. “I can’t believe you already came for me.” Jake said continuing to rub himself against Maya. “Don’t tease me.” Maya whined. Jake slowly inserted himself into Maya. “Fuck, you’re so tight!” Jake let out. Starting at a medium pace Jake couldn’t help but think to himself that Maya was the sweetest little thing while under him. “Oh god!” Maya cried out, breaking Jake from his trance. “You can get rougher; you won’t break me” Maya said. Jake just smiled down at her. He leaned down and started playing with Maya’s nipples. Squeezing one between his fingers while biting the other one and flicking it with his tongue. He began to slow his pace but was slamming himself into Maya. Wrapping her arms around Jake she began to claw his back out of ecstasy. Jake let out a moan as Maya dug her nails into him. Picking up his pace Jake wrapped a hand around Maya’s throat and leaned into her ear. “I want you to taste yourself.” Jake said not giving Maya a second to think. He pulled out of her, letting go of her throat, Jake leaned back on the other end of the couch. Maya followed and wrapped her lips around Jake’s cock. At first, she started slow and took every inch like it would be the last thing she had in her mouth then she wrapped her hand around the base and moved it in unison with her mouth. Jake threw his head back and moaned for Maya. This is when Maya pulled out all the stops, she quickened her pace not taking in Jake’s full length. “Oh Fuck!” Jake let out as he ran his fingers through Maya’s hair. Maya then swirled her tongue around his cock and plunged all the way down to the base filling her throat with Jake’s cock. Holding herself there Jake couldn’t help but let out a series of moans and fucks. Coming up for air Maya jerked Jake’s cock for a second before she got up and situated herself in reverse cowgirl on Jake’s cock. “Holy fucking shit!” Jake moaned as Maya bounced up and down. Jake couldn’t help himself, he wanted to be the one in control. He grabbed a fist full of hair and pushed both bodies forward. Slamming into Maya, Jake could feel Maya tightening around him. “You have to beg me to cum. Do you understand?” Jake stated. “Yes” Maya let out. Jake smacked her ass and pulled her up a little. “Yes what?” Jake growled. “Yes sir!” Maya cried out. “That’s a good girl.” Both were now slamming into each other quickening the pace. Maya felt the tightening feeling build up again in her. She knew she was close. “Please can I cum? Please?” Maya cried out. “Not yet!” Jake moaned as he could feel himself building as well. “Please sir! Please I need to cum!” Maya cried out again Jake slammed into Maya over and over again trying to catch up to her. “Yes! Cum for me baby, cum all over my cock.” Jake snarled. As if on command the tightening sensation snapped in Maya and a wave of pleasure washed over her. She slowly stopped rolling her hips but could still feel Jake slamming into her. Another second and she could feel Jake cumming in her. Jake fell back onto the couch breathing heavily. “Oh, fuck Maya.” Was all Jake could say. Maya herself out of breath got up and proceeded to put her Clash shirt back on. “Hey,” Jake called out. Maya looked back at Jake. “Just know when I’m serious about something I don’t play games either.” Jake threw out. Maya didn’t know what to say. She grabbed his clothes and walked to the door, opening it up. “Maya?” Jake asked, trying to get a response from her. Maya threw up a finger signaling for him to wait. She didn’t hear any noise upstairs. The party must have died down. Then she walked the short distance to her bedroom door and opened it up. “Come on let’s go to bed.” She finally said to Jake. “That’s all you have to say?” Jake asked. “Shh, you can either go to your room or you can bunk with me.” Maya suggested. Jake didn’t give the offer a second thought. He jumped up and put on his boxers following Maya to her room. Not another word was spoken between the two for the remainder of the night.

“Let me change really quick and then we’ll go in.” Maya said opening her trunk. The singer grabbed a duffle bag opening it to grab her nicer clothes. Maya pushed down her blue jeans and pulled her black tank top over her head, tossing both into the duffle bag. “You still change in public; some things never change.” Natasha said, looking out into the garage making sure no one was watching. Maya threw on a bright green floral crop top with a pair of black high waisted bootcut jeans and a pair of tan sandals with black braided straps. She threw her bag into the trunk and fixed her hair into two space buns. “Okay, you ready?” Maya asked her friend, grabbing her purse and keys. The two women started towards their way to the stairs to get out of the parking garage and into the party. When they came out to an alley Phoenix started to walk out to the street. “Nix, we don’t need to bother with going through the front, follow me.” Maya shouted. The friends made their way to a backdoor, Maya punched in a key code and the door opened. Making their way through a service hallway Maya leading Nix through a series of turns before coming to another door. Maya knocked three times slowly like she was using a sequence for the person on the other side to know it was her. It took a second, but just as Maya was about to run through her knocking again the door swung open. A bouncer looked at Maya and Natasha. “Maya, I didn’t know you were coming tonight.” The bouncer said surprised to see her. “Yeah Cody, we’re here to celebrate my friend’s birthday.” Maya answered wrapping her arm around Natasha. “Happy Birthday! Come on in.” The bouncer said with a gleeful tone. “Thanks Cody!” Maya yelled back. Maya leading the way again through another hallway. “A friend of mine wants to know if you have any friends for them?” Natasha asked. “Oh yes, whatever their preference is I can have friends for your friends. So, do I call your friends by their names or by their call signs?” Maya inquired, turning into a kitchen. “You can call them whatever you want. They don’t really care.” Natasha responded. As they emerged towards a dim area Maya saw a man in a burgundy suit leaning against a doorway. Maya looked at her friend and placed her index finger to her lips signaling for her to be quiet. Maya crept up next to the man and coughed. The man jumped and dropped his phone. “Jesus Maya, you scared the shit out of me.” The man said reaching down to pick up his phone. “Oh, Noah calm down, at least I didn’t do what I did on Halloween.” Maya turned to her friend. “I dressed up as a doll and stood in one of those toy boxes with a clear front waiting for him to come into his office and I broke through the box with blood coming out of my mouth asking if he was my mommy. It was hilarious.” Maya said through a series of laughs. “No, it was not. I’m Noah by the way.” The gentleman said, extending his hand to Phoenix. Phoenix shook the gentleman’s hand. “Lieutenant Natasha Trace. U.S. Naval Aviator.” “So, Noah, do we have our VIP set up? This is the birthday girl.” Maya said pointing to Phoenix. “Well, Happy Birthday Lieutenant. Yes, it is just find me when you want the bottle girls to come out.” Noah replied. “Just have them come in five minutes.” Maya said giving Noah a hug and led her friend to a set of stairs.
At the top of the stairs the girls emerged from behind a door and were finally in the nightclub. Maya pointed to a booth with black ropes in front of it. “That’s our VIP, let your friends know to check in at the front using your call sign to get in. I’m going to go get us some drinks.” Maya said departing from her friend to go to the bar. Maya stood at the end of the bar waiting to get a bartender’s attention. A familiar face made their way towards Maya. “Heey girl, what can I do you for?” the bartender asked. “Hey Nico, I need eight shots of Patron, a Grey Goose Martini with a twist of lemon and a double neat of the Woodford Reserve. How have you been?” Maya asked. “You know me just working and shaking my ass every chance I get. What brings you in here ordering 10 drinks?” Nico asked back. “It’s a friend’s birthday slash birth week so we are here kicking off the fun.” Maya shouted as he started making the martini. “Here ya go girl, this first round is on me.” “Nico! No! you have to let me pay.” Maya protested. Nico walked away before Maya could give him her card. Carefully Maya walked with a tray to the VIP booth. Not even aware of the people that were there, Maya set the tray down and was greeted with a couple happy faces. “Hi ya’ll I’m Maya.” The singer said, handing Natasha her martini. “I assume you’re Phoenix’s buddies from the Navy?” “Yes, they are, this is just a few of them. This is Fanboy, Payback, and Coyote.” Phoenix said introducing the first half of the aviators.
“Holy Shit! Please tell me you work here too!” A voice yelled in surprise. Maya turned around to the same three men she had encountered earlier. “Maya this is-“ “Lieutenant, Jake, Robert and Bradley. Yeah, we met earlier.” Maya said cutting off her friend. “Better known as Hangman, Bob and Rooster.” Phoenix continued. “Hangman huh? This is the Ken doll I was telling you about.” Maya said looking in Phoenix’s direction. Phoenix, Bob, and Rooster all started laughing while the rest of the daggers looked lost. “This was the cutie with the Eagle Rare I told you about.” Jake said to Coyote, Payback and Fanboy. The three took a second before they connected the dots, then burst out into laughter. Before anyone could get another word out, a line of barely dressed bottle girls surrounded the group with signs and bottles that had sparklers on top came out and sang happy birthday to Phoenix. After a few moments the girls left bottles of Grey Goose, Casamigos, and Cristal on the table. “So, Maya how do you know Phoenix?” Coyote asked. “We grew up together. She’s like the sibling I never had.” Maya answered. “Before we go shaking our asses, we have shots of tequila here. Everyone grab one!” Maya shouted. All the daggers grabbed a shot looking at Phoenix. “Ashes, do you want to do your toast?” Natasha asked. “Alright. Here’s to women we love them in linen, we love them in lace, we love them the most when they sit on our face. HAPPY BIRTHDAY PHOENIX!!” Maya concluded. Everyone touched the bottom of their shot glass to the table and shouted salud and threw back their shots. “Okay let’s go dance!” Fanboy shouted. The group followed Mickey as he led the way to a group of girls that were already on the dance floor. While Maya and Natasha were dancing Maya realized her friend never answered her question earlier about her liking or hating Rooster. “So, Nix what’s Rooster like?” Maya asked her friend. “Oh, you know, an ass but dreamy and never afraid to say what’s on his mind. He has the prettiest brown eyes. He’s always wearing these cool Hawaiian shirts, but the one he has on tonight is by far the goofiest one he owns. Why?” Phoenix said breaking her trance. “No reason, so you like him then huh?” Maya coaxed. “Well, he’s cute and I’ve thought about it, but I don’t want to ruin our friendship if he doesn’t reciprocate the feeling. You know?” “Oh, I do know.” Maya said giving her friend a hug. After a couple songs the daggers made their way back to the VIP booth. Everyone was in good spirits and Maya was happy she could give her friend a good birthday. When a group of women approached the booth Hangman, Coyote, Fanboy, and Payback got excited. The three men accompanied the ladies to the dance floor. Rooster dragged Bob and Phoenix onto the dance floor with him leaving Maya alone. The nightclub was starting to feel suffocating to Maya. She decided she needed to get some air. Making sure the daggers weren’t watching as she slipped out the same door her and Natasha had arrived from. Maya walked to the other end of the hallway to another set of stairs, this set leading to the roof. Maya reached the door and propped it wide open with a rock. Walking to the edge of the roof she took a look at all the lights illuminating the night sky. Maya closed her eyes and took a huge breath in. Letting it out, Maya opened her eyes and sat on the cool concrete of the roof. Before getting lost in her thoughts she heard footsteps approaching from the stairs.
“I know Noah, I won’t be up here too long.” Maya said without looking to see it was Jake not Noah who came to her. “Well, I promise I won’t tell on you.” Jake responded. “Hey Ken doll, sorry thought you were someone else.” Maya said. “I’m sorry about earlier. I may have come on too strong.” Jake stated. “That’s okay. Had I known you were one of Natasha’s friends I would have bought you a drink.” Maya said. “So, you’re a singer, do you just do shows here in Vegas, or do you go on tour?” Jake asked. “I mostly do shows here in Vegas. Can I tell you a secret? You cannot tell anyone. Especially Natasha.” Maya said. “Sure” “I’m leaving Vegas soon; I have an offer in Los Angeles to record a demo. I want to surprise Phoenix on the last day.” Maya said “Well that’s really cool Maya. Let me ask you this. Why did Phoenix call you Ashes? I thought your name was Maya.” Jake asked. “It is. My full name is Maya Ashley Atwell. It is also a nickname from when we were kids. I was really into pyrotechnics and one day I burnt a kid’s homework. By accident. I tried to put the paper back together and the teacher said that everything I touch turns to ashes. The name kind of stuck and I think it’s fitting. Phoenix and Ashes. We always joked that if Nix’s career didn’t work out, we could form a band with that name.” Maya finished. “Well, I’d buy tickets to see Phoenix and Ashes. You know it’s a shame Rooster hasn’t told her how he feels they could be good together.” Jake let out. “Wait Rooster likes Natasha?? This is perfect cause a little birdie told me she likes Rooster. Maybe we should try for another surprise for her. What do you say Hangman? Want to get your friends together? They would be great together.” Maya asked eagerly. “Sure, Ashes we can do that.” Jake answered. “Tell me how you ended up in Vegas?” Jake asked. “Well, that a long story but the main thing was my parents. They urged me to pursue my dreams of being a singer. So, when I met someone who I thought could give me the world I followed him here. It was the oldest story in the book, He had me wrapped around his finger, I did anything to please him. Soon he got me hooked on drugs and was cheating. One night he tried to pimp me out to a music producer that was passing through here. That’s when I woke up from my drug induced fog.” Maya said as she swirled her bourbon around in her glass. “So why stay? Why not leave the horrible things that happened?” Jake furthered. “I was reading the paper one day at a diner trying to figure out my next move, when I saw my picture in an article relating to property damage at one of the casinos. So, I spoke with an officer over the phone and found out I had a warrant for my arrest for a lot of stupid shit I had done. I called my aunt to let her know I needed a lawyer. She sent one and he helped me get down to two years’ probation, some community service and I met with every one of the managers of the places I destroyed. We agreed upon a set amount that I was to pay back to them individually. Plus, I met a lot of cool people while working here, it’s like a second home that I can’t wait to leave.” Maya answered. Letting the reply hang in the air Maya finished her drink and looked at Jake, Jake looked back at Maya. Just as he started to say something Maya slammed her lips on Jake’s. Jake started kissing Maya back, running his tongue along her bottom lip trying for access to her mouth he tasted the remnants of her bourbon. This made Jake pull away from Maya. “I’m sorry Maya, I want to do this the right way. I don’t want this to be something that either one of us regrets.” “I get it.” Maya said looking away. “We should get back before we get in trouble.” Maya said standing up walking towards the door. Jake walked into the hallway waiting for Maya to shut the door.
Leading the way back into the club, Maya couldn’t see Phoenix. At the VIP booth no one was around. Before Maya went on a goose chase looking for her friend, Bob came over in a nervous state. “Bob where is Natasha?” Maya questioned. “A lot of people are buying her and the rest of the dagger’s shots. She went to the bathroom last I saw her.” Bob replied. “Okay go round up the rest of the daggers and I’ll grab Natasha. Meet me here.” Maya instructed. Bob disappeared into the crowd. Maya looked at Hangman. He was busy looking over the top of the crowd to try and spot Phoenix. “I’m going to go find her in the bathroom.” Maya yelled over the music to Jake. “No need, she is at the bar. Go grab her and we’ll wait here for you.” Jake yelled down to Maya. Maya didn’t give it a second thought, she moved through the crowd and eventually ended up next to her friend. “Ashes! Where did you go!’ The now intoxicated Natasha yelled at her friend. “I’ve been making plans for us. I have a surprise at the house, but we have to go now. Okay?” Maya said, removing the drink that Natasha was holding onto. Maya grabbed her friend by the wrist, and they made their way to the VIP booth. The rest of the daggers were there waiting, all but Hangman, and Bob were pretty tipsy. “Okay. Everyone grab your things and follow me.” Maya instructed. The daggers followed Maya to the back of the club. Once everyone was in the hallway, Maya pulled out her phone. “I don’t have enough room in the car to take everyone so I’m calling a friend. He has a cab and he’ll follow me to the house. So, I need either three or four of you to ride in his cab. The rest can ride with me. So, figured it out while I call him.” Maya said. Maya called her friend and gave him instructions to meet them at the parking garage. Maya then led all the aviators through the same series of hallways and turns as she had earlier with Phoenix. “Bob, Jake watch everyone. I’m going to go grab my car.” Maya said walking away from the group. Racing up the stairs Maya reached her car. She quickly cleaned her back seat and threw everything into the trunk to make room for the daggers. Making her way down to everyone Maya hoped Jake would ride with her. “Okay, who is riding with me?” Maya asked. Fanboy, Bob and Hangman all started walking towards Maya’s car. After waiting a few minutes headlights appeared. “That’s my friend, the rest of you pile into his cab and he’ll follow me to the house for a little after party.” Maya said. Waiting for everyone to get situated, Maya sent a text to a couple of other friends to meet her at her house in thirty minutes.

Bradley, Jake and Bob were starting to get antsy. Knowing they should wait for the rest of the squad to join, the excitement of Vegas was starting to seep its way into the minds of Jake and Bradley. “We know where we’re all going to end up tonight so we might as well get a jump on the fun and go somewhere. It’s pointless to wait for the other three.” Jake suggested from the bathroom. “For once you are absolutely right Bagman. I heard this place called House of Blues is supposed to be a cool place, let’s start there and see where we are before we meet up with everyone else.” Bradley added. “I don’t know guys it would be fun to get out of the room, but shouldn’t we wait?” Bob asked cautiously. “Come on Floyd, I bet even you get laid this trip, the sooner we start the better chances you have.” Jake quipped. “Yeah Bob, and it’s not like we are going to go score drugs or head to a strip club, it’s the House of Blues, we’ll listen to some music and figure the rest out.” Bradley added. “I guess there is no harm in getting out onto the strip. Alright let’s go” Bob said putting on his shirt “Whoo!” Both Rooster and Hangman cried out. After five minutes the trio headed to The House of Blues.
After finding open seats at the bar the three men settle on a corner that faced the stage. While waiting for the next act Jake ordered beers for himself and Bradley and a ginger ale for Bob. “Here ya go boys,” the bartender said to them “First one is on the house for our fine military men.” the lady said as she walked away. “Looks like our luck has just started boys.” Bradley let out. “Please welcome to the stage long time favorite Maya Atwell.” A voice over the speakers announced. A tall slender women walked out onto the stage. Her unruly hair tucked into a ball cap that was placed backwards on her head let the crowd see her soft features and her blue eyes. “Hi everyone, how’s everyone’s night going?” The sultry voice asked. The crowd responded with a chorus of woos, whistles and hands clapping. “Those of you who are new, I’m Maya and I can play just about any song, for those of you who know the drill welcome on back. Let’s give a huge round of applause to Mike the owner slash manager and to the fine ladies you see around here serving.” Maya waited for the crowd to follow her orders and for the cheering to die down. “Normally I take requests, but I have plans later tonight so I’m going to be doing a short set of covers tonight. This first one” She continues as she tuned her guitar “Is by my favorite man in black. As always if you know it sing along and if you don’t I want you on your feet dancing. This is Walk the Line by Johnny Cash.” The sultry voice that was speaking to the crowd was not the same powerhouse voice that started on the song. Jake, Bradley, and Bob were all amazed. They stood in front of their stools and sang along with Maya. When the song finished the crowd erupted into applause. “I can’t believe a girl like that knows Johnny Cash” Jakes yelled to his counterparts. “Yeah, she’s something.” Bob added. “Alright this next one is one I love listening to growing up, this is for all of you who are infected with Beatlemania.” The singer started playing Hey Jude. “Damn bro, she is versatile. Who goes from Cash to The Beatles!” Bradley asked his friends. By the end of the song the singer had stopped playing and let the crowd finish out the song. “Okay” Coaxed the singer. “Last one for the night, this is one that I hold dear to my heart it was the first one I learned to play, and I hope I do it justice.” As soon as she started the first notes Jake recognized the song right away “Now she’s playing Nirvana! I have to meet this girl!” As Maya finished Come As You Are, everyone was on their feet applauding her. “Thank You House of Blues! Don’t forget to tip your waitresses.”
The singer exited the stage and appeared on the other side of the bar. “Let’s go meet her.” Jake suggested. “You’re crazy if you think I’m going to go talk to the girl who can command the whole place like that.” Bob interjected. “Come on Bob, what kind of wing man are you?” Jake asked “I’m not a wing man I’m a weapons system operator” Bob responded dryly. “Look do me this favor and I can owe you anything, anywhere, any time. Okay?” Jake added. “Okay, let’s go talk to her.” Bob said in a defeated tone. The three men approached the singer and watched her finish a bottle of water. “Excuse me ma’am can I get the lady a glass of whatever wine she prefers?” Jake asked the bartender. The bartender looked at Maya, and back at Jake and let out a little chuckle. “This gentleman wants to buy you a glass of wine.” The bartender repeated to Maya. Maya smirked before she responded. “No thanks, I’ll take my usual Lola.” Maya said turning her back to the three men. Lola poured a double neat of Eagle Rare into a glass for Maya. This choice of drink made even Jake blush. A woman who knows her liquor. Jake stepped to the other side of her to talk with her more. “You like whiskey, I like that in a woman. I’m lieutenant Jake Seresin.” Jake said, putting his hand out to shake Maya’s hand. “Well lieutenant, I’m Maya, and Eagle Rare is actually a bourbon and I dont just like it, I love it. Best drink to have after a show.” Bradley let out a cough causing both Jake and Maya to whip their heads in his direction. “How rude of me, this is lieutenant Bradley Bradshaw and lieutenant Robert Floyd.” Jake said as Maya waved to the two other men. “Nice to meet you.” At that moment Maya felt her phone buzz in her pocket. It was a text from her friend that she is ready to meet for dinner. “Looks like that’s my cue. Thanks for coming and seeing the show, hope you boys have fun in Vegas.” Maya said as she threw back her drink. “See you later Lola.” “Wait can I get your number?” Jake asked, blocking her path from the door. “Maybe some other time Ken doll.” Maya side-stepped Jake and left through the front door. Bob and Bradley erupted in laughter. “Oh man, that was almost worth coming over here. So glad you owe me.” Bob said in between his laughs. “Shut up. Who knows maybe we’ll run into each other this week.” Jake said with a hint of hope. “Hey, I just got a text from the others they are at the hotel and want to meet up on the strip.” Bradley said. Silencing anymore laughter him or Bob had left. The three men left the House of Blues and headed back to the hotel.
Maya walked into Bubbas Gump’s Shrimp Co. looking for her friend. The hostess asked if she was looking for someone. Before Maya could respond a pair of hands were spinning her around and embracing her tightly. “Oh Ashes, I can’t believe it’s been three years!” a familiar voice squealed in Maya’s ear. When the girl pulled away, Maya saw her best friend. “Natasha! I can’t believe you’re here.” Maya responded. When the reunion of friends ended the two women were shown to a table on the upper patio. “So, how has Vegas been since the last time I saw you?” Phoenix asked. “It’s been good, still working off a couple of debts but I’m so close to being a free woman.” Maya said looking over the strip. “How has the navy been?” Maya asked, turning her full attention to her friend. “It’s been good to me, I got called back to Top Gun. A special priority mission, the best of the best.” Phoenix said puffing her chest and flexing her biceps. “You’ll never guess who else they called back.” Phoenix started. “Fucking Rooster.” Phoenix finished. “For as much as you talk about him, you either want to be with him or you truly hate him, so, which is it?” Maya asked her friend. Before Phoenix got a chance to answer a waiter came by to take their drink order. “Okay, so what have you got planned for this week?” Phoenix asked curiously about her friend’s plans. “Well first and foremost we’ll have VIP bottle service everywhere we go. But I have a couple nights planned on the strip to keep your buddies happy, then a few dinners, a day at the Bellagio cypress pool bar. I made an appointment for us with a special someone for tattoos and we have the Florida Georgia Line Concert tomorrow night.” Maya finished. “I can’t believe you are opening for them; how did you land that gig?” Natasha asked. Maya looked at her friend and looked out over the strip once more. “Oh, you know me Nix, I have my ways. Besides, the owner couldn’t find someone who was willing to be paid so little. I figured I could just have him put it towards what I owe.” Maya responded as the waiter came back over with their drinks. “What can I get ya’ll started with?” The waiter asked. The two women ordered a few appetizers and a couple cocktails. “What do you plan on doing after you have paid your debt?” Natasha asked, trying to meet her friend’s gaze. Maya looked down trying to search her head for an answer. She already knew what she was going to do. She was going to get the hell out of Las Vegas and never look back. But she didn’t want to let her friend in on the last surprise of her birth week. “Ashes, you know you are always welcomed at my house and I’m sure your aunt would love to see you.” Natasha added when her friend didn’t respond. “HA! The only time she calls is when she wants to update her friends on her pathetic niece.” Maya responded sharply. “Hey! You are not pathetic! You would be pathetic if you stayed with Elijah and kept doing drugs. But you chose to get better, and you chose to make a better life for yourself. The first call I got from you when you got here sounded like you were in your favorite book. Living like Hunter S. Thompson, I was truly worried. But you got help and you are paying back your debt. I couldn’t be prouder. I’m sure your aunt is just worried.” Natasha finished. “Yeah, well you don’t know her like I do, and you definitely don’t want to hear our conversations. But I digress. I might bounce around New York or go visit some friends in Tucson.  I’m not sure yet.” Maya said with a smirk, knowing she would be hounded until she gave her friend a real answer. The food and drinks came, and the two women sat reminiscing about their friendship and catching each other up on their current situations.
“So, my place is a little ways outside of town but it’s huge. It’s on loan from a friend of mine who won’t be back until winter. She is this really cool old lady. I wish you could meet her. She would love all the soldiers staying in her house.” Maya said as the two women waited for the bill. When the waiter put the little black checkbook on the table Natasha reached for it. “Um what do you think you are doing?” Maya asked. Snatching the book from her friends grasp. “I want to pay, plus I can get a discount.” Natasha responded. “No let me get this, okay?” Maya asked but was more or less telling her friend she had the bill. “Oh, I almost forgot to tell you there was this guy earlier. He tried to buy me a glass of wine and wanted my number.” Maya started. “Was he cute?” Natasha asked. “I mean yeah, he wasn’t horribly disfigured, but he was so cocky and kind of had this fuck boy vibe. The type for hooking up and not anything serious. But him and his buddies looked like they were here for a bachelor party, not the type to come to Vegas to gamble and see the sights.” Maya responded. “Did you give him your number?” Natasha inquired. “Yeah right. No, I told him some other time, then I called him Ken doll!” Maya said laughing. “Poor guy, had no clue he was finished before he even started.” Natasha said. The two women left the restaurant, stepping out into the cool Nevada air. “Text your buddies to meet us at On The Record, by the time they get there they we'll be able to start the birth week.” Maya said, leading Phoenix to her car. After a quick trip to the parking garage behind the nightclub the two women’s spirits were high and ready to party.

“Okay listen up, just because you are going to Las Vegas for a week doesn’t mean you need to act like you aren’t part of the most elite fighter squad this world has seen. You still represent the navy and this program. I don’t want to be receiving calls because you couldn’t handle sin city. With that being said, go have a good time and enjoy the festivities. You are dismissed.” Captain Pete Mitchell said releasing the pilots from their day. The dagger squad had all taken a week off to go to Vegas for Phoenix’s birthday. As the daggers headed to the locker room Phoenix stopped the men she had invited along. “Okay ladies, you’ll be staying in a hotel for the first night but after that we’ll be crashing at my friend’s house. She has been nice enough to let you all stay with her. I’m not sure what she has planned but everyone will have a great time and if someone ruins it so help me go-" “We promise to not misbehave” Hangman interrupted. “I mean it. Everything she has planned for us is a favor from her friends and from her. Trust me you don’t want to fall out of her good graces.” Natasha finished. The daggers showered and changed into their civilian clothes. “Natasha, will your friend have any friends for us?” Coyote asked. “Yes, she knows just about everyone in Vegas, and she will have plenty friends there for everyone.” Natasha said, walking to her car. She threw her bag into the open window and leaned against her car waiting for the rest of the squad to join her. “Last thing guys” as everyone gathered around her vehicle. “I’m going on my own, Rooster, Hangman and Bob you’ll get to the hotel first, Fanboy, Payback, and Coyote, you’ll get there later tonight. We have a reservation at the MGM for their club On The Record. I’ll let you know when we’re heading there so everyone can get a chance to meet my friend and our host. See you all out in the desert.” With the final plans laid out everyone departed the base and went home to finish final arrangements for their vacation. Natasha left straight from the base to the airport to go start her birthday fun. She couldn’t wait to see her longtime friend who she considered a sister.
