I hate that I have so many Petra/Variks thoughts on the daily but no fic ever comes out of it. The themes of betrayal, of power imbalance (Petra holding actual power over him due to her position as Awoken and Queen's Wrath, and Variks being so much older and more experienced than her), the tensions between their peoples mirrored in the tensions between them, the companionship based around balancing this tension and the creative ways of trying to kill each other (that's actually canon). This state of impermanence they're both aware of, and the knowledge they can't really trust each other, not in the things that matter; that there is always the threat of imminent betrayal, but it still stings like a betrayal when it happens. "Petra and Variks know each other's agendas and each other's strengths and to Variks that's as close as any two people can get", remember that line? How do I ever put that into words??
