On this day, 6 December 1989 (content note: gendered violence), 14 women, most of whom were training in engineering fields, were murdered in a mass shooting at the École Polytechnique in Montreal. The 25 year old shooter specifically targeted women, claimed he was “fighting feminism,” and killed himself after shooting 28 people. The names of those lost were: Geneviève Bergeron, Hélène Colgan, Nathalie Croteau, Barbara Daigneault, Anne-Marie Edward, Maud Haviernick, Maryse Laganière, Maryse Leclair, Anne-Marie Lemay, Sonia Pelletier, Michèle Richard, Annie St-Arneault, Annie Turcotte, and Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz. Brazil bilateral trade with Qatar has leaped in the buildup to the World Cup

Despite a last shock surprise defeat against Cameroon, Brazil is in the Round of 16 and still standing as one of the favorites to reach the final round of Qatar 2022 World Soccer Cup. And despite its sporting performance, Brazil has had a huge leap in bilateral trade with the buildup to the Qatar event.

According to Comex Stat data on Brazil-Qatar trade, imports of Qatari products to South America's largest economy totaled US$ 1 billion between January and October 2022, with fertilizers and liquefied natural gas (LNG) leading the way. Conversely, Brazilian exports increased by 167% over the same period last year, generating nearly US$ 340 million. Meat is Brazil’s second most exported commodity to Qatar, trailing only iron ore.

The profile of bilateral trade can be explained by Qatar's economic profile, which is one of the world’s largest oil and gas producers, according to the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

After 60 years, Qatar withdrew from the organization to focus on liquefied natural gas production, becoming the world’s largest exporter. On the other hand, the demand for beef and chicken meat exceeds its domestic production, so a large portion of the animal protein consumed in Qatar is imported from Brazil.

Production and consumption in the Netherlands cause nearly 40 billion euros of damage to biodiversity. The damage comes from unsustainable land use, greenhouse gas emissions, and air and water pollution, ABN Amro reported based on a study by the bank and the Impact Institute.

The study charted the damage caused by 65 industries through trade with 140 countries and the use of 42 types of crops. According to the bank, it is essential, also economically, to do less damage to biodiversity. “Radical steps” are needed for this, the bank said.

Biodiversity regulates everything from the climate and water cycle to the purification of water and air, breaking down waste, pollinating plants, and spreading seeds. The biodiversity damage, therefore, leads to a loss of value for ecosystem services like food production, carbon storage, and air and water filtering in the Netherlands and abroad. More than half of the world’s economy depends on these ecosystem services from nature.
