Doctor Update
After the initial surgery, doctors had to leave a piece of Eddie's skull opened. The swelling in his brain was too great and they wanted to wait and see how he'd make it through the week before going back in. Nothing has changed and they plan to take him back into surgery. All is interrupted by his brothers plans to take him back to Washington.
Now, with Hadley officially listed as his right to life caregiver, his brothers shaking their heads, doctors resume talk about their next steps.
Brothers leave, with nothing more than a tap of Eddie's shoulder and scowls in Hadley's direction. Eddie is left attached to wires, a breathing tube and many many monitors. Doctors aren't sure if he is conscious nor if he can hear the people around him.
They warn Hadley
"Surgery may not work." "He could die." "If he lives he could have permanent brain damage." "If he lives he still may never wake up." "If he wakes up he may not be the same man she was used to."
They also tell her that she makes the final decision but eventually, if there is any hope of his recovery, they will have to go in and evaluate the swelling to his brain, the damage, and close him back up. They tell her that she shouldn't lose hope but she shouldn't be too hopeful. They tell her they're doing everything they can. That they're sorry.
Eddie's heart rate is as steady and it's been a week since he crashed, since they had to shock him back to life, and all this is supposed to be a good sign, right?

Time to Go // Eddie's Brothers
John had been busy chatting up doctors ever since his arrival while Christopher kept chatting on the phone, arranging for Eddie's transport. Neither of them had spent more than ten minutes at Eddie's side, but he was family and taking him back to DC seemed the right thing to do. The only thing they had to get around? Eddie's girlfriend. She seemed adamant about him staying here but Christopher's many phone calls helped him discover that as she was just a girlfriend and they were family, they had all the legal rights to take him back there. They'd take him back, get a second opinion from doctors and if they said there was no chance that Eddie would ever be Eddie again, they'd let him go.
The doctors here? They were set on giving false hope, lots of "It doesn't look too god, but don't give up hope. You never know."
It wasn't right. He didn't deserve to be hooked up to monitors more than necessary just because someone couldn't let go. Just like Eddie to be a hero, look where it got him...

The Hospital
Part One
Paramedics transfer their hands to where Hadley's were and clot the wound on his head as they wrap a neck brace around him and lift him onto a back board. In the ambulance, paramedics try to slide a breathing tube down his throat but can't. They rush through their supplies and take out a scalpel and slice his throat open right then and there to do a tracheotomy. Wires hooked up here and there, they strip him of the blood stained shirt and do a transport EKG reading, radioing into the hospital as they turn the corner.
Part Two
He crashes upon arrival and they defibrillate, asking Hadley to step away and let them do their work. The paramedics list off the stats from the car and give a consoling tap to Hadley's shoulder before they leave. If a patient's blood pressure and oxygen level can be maintained upon arrival at the hospital, an urgent computed CT of the brain is taken. Eddie is unresponsive and whisked away immediately into surgery.
A bunch of medical jargin
When a bullet hits the body, all the energy it has is transferred to the body tissue causing damage. The heavier the bullet and the faster it moves the more damage it can potentially cause. The way the bullet hits and enters the body is important. The more the wobble, the greater the potential to transfer energy to the body and cause damage.
Gunshot wounds to the head are more difficult to predict. Think of the skull as a closed box that cradles the brain. There isn't a lot of room for movement for the brain or swelling in the skull. If a bullet enters the head and bounces around, the permanent cavity (bullet track) may be large, but the damage from the temporary cavity that forms is even worse. There is no room for the brain to move and the shock waves often cause irreversible damage. For some lucky people, if the bullet velocity is high and there is no side to side movement (wobble) and it passes through non-critical parts of the brain, less damage occurs and survival is possible.
Part Three (or Four, technically)
Surgery takes eight hours and the doctors close up early, because the swelling is too heavy. They put him in a medically induced coma, hook him up to machines, and nurses clean him off before they let Hadley into the room. It take a while but a doctor comes in and explains the chances for recovery are slim and the chances for him getting out of this without brain damage are even less. He tells her to prepare for the worst, but that they've done what they can and they will continue to do what they can.

"Don't be scared." He smiled shaking his head. "Don't be scared. We're going to go see your dad. I'm going to meet him. I'm going to meet him and then I'm going to ask for his blessing. Then I'm going to marry you." Eddie nodded in affirmation.
"Woah. Woah. Woah. Hey." Eddie called after the gunman when the gun was once again pointed at Hadley. "Over here man. Point that thing over here."
"Don't worry. You'll be next."
"No. Lets make a deal. You shoot me. Okay? Shoot me. Let her go. Okay? You don't have to hurt her. You have me." The kid turned around. "You shoot me. Just me."
Eddie forgot the gunman with those final words, wishing only to hold Hadley in his arms. "I love you, Hadley. I'm going to marry the woman I love. We're going to start a family. We're going to be so happy. So happy, because I love you so much, Hadley. So much. Thank you for loving me. Thank you for making me so happy."
And then he fell to his knees, and he could feel the taste of blood in his mouth, but he kept his eyes steady. Not leaving her gaze until he couldn't keep his eyes open anymore.

The gun was now pointed at him. The person behind it shaky. "You shouldn't have come in here, man."
Eddie soon recognized the face. It was a face he'd seen around the office before, but not lately. He looked past the face to see Hadley and he couldn't help but smile. He was always smiling looking at her.
"Yeah. You're probably right." Eddie returned his attention to the gun. "But you see you had a gun pointed to that beautiful woman over there and really you left me with no choice."
Name. Name. Why couldn't he remember this kids name? A kid, he'd pictured him as this man. The man with a gun, but here he was, a kid. One who definitely had worked here before. Now why couldn't he think of a name.
"You don't have to shoot. You can just walk out of here."
The kid shook, sweating profusely. "Someone.has.to.pay." The gun pointed back at Hadley. "People have to pay."

Goodbye // Hadley & Eddie
Batman, having witnessed the murder of his parents as a child, swore revenge on criminals, an oath tempered with the greater ideal of justice, he dons a bat-themed costume in order to fight crime and unlike most superheroes, he does not possess any superpowers; he makes use of his many other skills and is still one of the coolest and best superheroes. Eddie, who had connected with Batman since he was but yay high is not strong or powerful or wealthy. He doesn't train and go out and fight crime. He's an ordinary guy who has lived an ordinary life and tried to get by as best he could. He lived life day to day. That was until he met Hadley. With Hadley in the picture, life because about the future. Their future. So right now, seeing a man with a gun walking in to the place Eddie knew the love of his life was in? It really made him wish he was Batman, because Batman, without fear would go in and kick ass. He would rescue the girl and come out victorious. But he wasn't Batman. He was Eddie. So as he walked upstairs he tried to think of what a superhero would do in this situation. He tried to think of any fighting skills he may have had...none...He tried to think like someone other than a guy who goes through film and papers, making notes and corrections for a living, because really, what was special about a guy like that? Nothing.
Eddie freezes, and he sees the man with the gun. He see's Hadley. Eddie freezes and tried to summon up the courage of all the superheroes he's read about in comic books, the ones that always won in the end. He walks closer, and thanks to stupid glass walls, sees that not only is Hadley in the room with the gunman, but he has the gun pointed at her. And then being a superhero goes out the window and Eddie realizes the only way he can even attempt to get Hadley out of this is by being Eddie.
So he walks in the room. No hesitation.

// This is it //
It's finally over. His brothers are gone. The apartment is no longer a sanctuary and once again becomes a home. His home, where he can cook for Hadley and watch J. Edgar pee on things. He left his brothers with a quick wave at the airport, because they'd insisted he see them off, and not a single tear was shed, which hurt, honestly, but Eddie was glad to see them go. He'd called to make sure they landed and told them, through his teeth, that they should do it again sometime. Right now? He needed a vacation from his family. Anywhere. Preferably up to see Hadley's dad. He'd needed to ask him a very important question, after all. Yes. That sounded good. He'd propose the idea to Hadley when he next saw her. She had been itching to leave, this was perfect, really. He smiled, because everything started making sense again, and took out his red pen to quick correct some blog material that would be going up later today. He was almost tempted to whistle, while he worked, only he was really bad at whistling and new some of the interns would quickly get tired of his attempts. So he smiled and doodled notes on the papers in front of him, little suggestions here and there but for the most part the interns had gotten the hang of it.
Then he heard a scream. He heard the scream and the sound that followed didn't resonate. It was loud, followed by a tremble and something that he'd only ever heard in movies.
He spun around in his chair, in the direction of the sound and everything slowed. People rose from their chairs in a slow motion, it was almost a dance. Others ducked under desks, and there movements were almost glide like. There was a ringing in his ears and the cries of people in the office he'd spent the latter part of his life in disappeared. He could only hear the ringing.
Then a man came out of the supply closet, and he moved past every slowed down being with a quick stalky step. He hadn't slowed like the rest of them had in Eddie's mind. He walked swiftly and Eddie was forced to shake himself back into the present. He kept his head low and darted for the emergency stairwell, nearly collapsing after the door shut behind him and another loud bang resonated back in the bullpen.
Was this really happening? Was someone really shooting up ACN?
His hands shook, and for reasons unfathomed, he peaked head into the crack of the door...instead of running down the stairs...and saw the same man heading up for the conference room.
Hadley.

Hadley and J. Edgar Hoover. That was Eddie's family. His brothers would always be his brothers. He would never regret anything he did for them, he would never stop loving them no matter the people they turned out to be, but Eddie could do without seeing them for more than a day and more than a phone conversation every now and then. It used to hurt. It used to make Eddie feel like he was the only one left on his own in this crazy world, but he had Hadley and his perfectly destructive little pup that peed and chewed on everything and they were the perfect family. Better than anything Eddie could have hoped for.
So he sits by their tree, Jed chewing on his treats and Hadley presents him with something so amazing, so beyond words. He sits their, flipping through the pages silently and he feels his eyes swell up with tears. Eddie feels something so intense that he almost can not make it out. It's a happy feeling, but he's sitting their focusing on people that he tries not to think about and he lets tears fall because he misses them. He will always feel guilty about their last conversation. He will always feel like he could have been a better son, but most of all Eddie just wishes he could hold them one more time, and put into memory how warm their hugs were and how they smelled. He misses them.
And the gift is so beautiful. It's so perfect. He traces their pictures with his finger before closing it and holding it closed with both hands. He takes a deep breath and steadies himself, wanting to breathe normally before turning to thank Hadley, though he is not sure anything he does will be enough thanks.
Below the tree he has Casablanca, a signed edition he fought someone for on eBay. Inside the DVD case are tickets to go see her dad, because he wants to see where she grew up and he wants to know everything he can about her.
He could move to get it, he could get up and hug her, but he sits, because he is still frozen in the moment of his parents memories.

Jed’s gift was simple, a quick trip to Shake Shack got him all of the treats he’d need for a bit. She sets them under the tree, well wrapped to keep the pup from sniffing them out.
Eddie’s gift was a bit more complicated, and she hopes he likes it and that she didn’t overstep a boundary. But on her last trip to Washington D.C., when work is done, she doesn’t go to her hotel room - she spends hours in the nearby library sorting through newspaper articles and local yearbooks on microfilm. She finds everything she can about his parents. A silly feature from the high school newsletter about the best things to do on Valentine’s Day, the page from the yearbook from when they were voted cutest couple, any picture she can find, any quote she can uncover. It takes four nights to gather everything and she spends the flight home assembling it across three tray tables and is grateful for her patient fellow passengers who heard what she was doing and even attempted to help. She binds it all up in a leather book from the store and hopes that it’s something. Jed better not chew on this.

Eddie has gone through a lot of magazines, searching for his final Secret Santa gift. Finally, he finds this amazing brand (Thomas Paul) and finds this cool laptop case, heavyweight cotton canvas, quilted for extra protection and hand silk-screened , throws in a Five Shade Tinted Balm Wand from Sephora and wraps it in Mickey Mouse Santa Wrapping Paper.
HoHoHo. Merry Christmas. It's been a good year, getting to know you! -Eddie

Don't be sorry. I'm sorry you feel like you've ruined something.  We can absolutely go to bed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I ruin lots of stuff and I want to tell you, but can’t tell you some of it without telling you all of it and I don’t think I can tell you all of it. I mean I can because I trust you but I shouldn’t because it’s not all mine to tell and I’m sorry.
Can we go to bed?

Yeah. Sure. A good thing.

Nah. You're just saying that to make me feel better.
Well it’s only to Friday. Which is a good thing right? Although I guess I wouldn’t survive that long with my brothers. Seriously I wouldn’t.
