God, thinking about the portraits in Disco Elysium again. Everybody and their mother knows that the circle behind Kim is supposed to be a halo. That’s obvious. BUT! The square behind Jean is ALSO supposed to be a halo, and more specifically, a square halo indicates that the figure in the painting is still alive.

And like… it’s flipped. It’s flipped! Kim is a total stranger in Harry’s past. He’s just some nobody from Precinct 57. But Jean is his partner! Harry and Jean have been through thick and thin together! Harry has over 200 cases solved; how many of those were Jean there for? But in the events of the game, Kim is your guiding light, your other half. He’s your everything. If you play your cards right, you save his life, and vice versa. But Jean? Who’s Jean? He’s just some asshole you can talk to when you call Precinct 41 who you don’t even recognize if they put on a wig. He’s nobody to you.

But he’s still alive. He has the square halo. He’s alive, and he still remembers all the time he’s spent with Harry. He’s still here…

something something how there’s this kind of panic that sets in among recovery types where. someone realizes the amount of brain damage that has to be acknowledged for the next stage of recovery to begin, realizes how much damage they’re working with personally, and then all of the people with brain damage who are watching this process are exposed to whatever negative associations that first person has with people who are that fucked up.

at the farmer's market the baby was pointing at the tomatoes and going ba ba ba and signing "on" so my sister was like "how much for just one tomato" and the person at the stall was like "oh he can have one. don't worry about it" and the baby stood there by the stall devouring the tomato like an apple in big messy bites and people kept stopping and going "awwwww" and then "oh man that does look good" and buying a bunch of tomatoes. all natural organic advertising

thinking about how gentle Kim is with Harry on the swingset scene, making small talk with him for two hours, realizing that the amnesia thing really isn’t a elaborate interrogation technique or joke. choosing to be kind.

it just means a lot when Kim’s #1 coping mechanism, and really the only way he knows how to deal with Harry in general is Lets Focus On Work. I don’t know why there are so many depictions of Kim as relentlessly cold or distant when this scene is such a big part of the game. I’ll be the first to talk about how Kim is a pretty unpleasant guy you definitely wouldn’t want to know in real life but like

he does care about Harry. off duty and alone with him, he flirts with him about his high heels. he confides in his past as a moralist and his faith in the RCM. he openly admits that quitting smoking would be easier than his little ‘unnecessary' ritual. as repressed and as buttoned down Kim is…he’s just a guy. and we so rarely get to see that.

ultimately all these guys are cops first and people second so when you get to see the people part it’s all the more sad.
