And I hope you are as well, because you're the only one who truly knows the incredible amount of strength, bravery, and persistence you had to have to get here. I know that it's terrifying at times--the strange, unpredictable nature of life, and the way there is so much good but so much bad everywhere every day. It's difficult to rationalize. And the truth is that no matter what you do, sometimes you will find yourself in bad situations outside of your control. What you can control, though, is your mindset and the degree to which you actively seek out good things. I hope you won't forget that you're clever and capable and lovable and you can make a difference and you can become whatever you want to be. The world is unexplored and exciting and it was made for you; it holds so much for you to find.

on beauty--

There are few things more classic and admirable than the pursuit and attainment of a highly aestheticized life. But in truth, I think you're chasing something that you'll never be able to catch. I don't think the level of beauty--of passion, of intensity, of magic, of glamour--you're seeking exists outside of movie screens. I met an angel last spring

They were absolutely stunning. I asked them if they had ever been on the cover of a magazine. They laughed, but I was really asking. They looked like they had stepped right out of starring in an old movie. There was something about them, too, that was so... light. lighter than air. But in an almost cold sort of way. Lukewarm, at most. It was like talking to a statue. Or a demigod.

[--ocean vuong]. I felt like we were in a movie every second I was with them. They were so vibrant and charismatic, and everything they said was so exciting. They had a way of making mundane things fun. I'll admit, I was absurdly jealous; they're going to look back in a few years and have all these amazing memories of good times. There was something so special about the way they were able to fill the world with color.

You meet the kindest people in the strangest places

Everything about them was so warm--their eyes, their smile, their laugh, everything. It was so easy and comfortable to be around them. We'd never met before, but it felt like we had known each other for years. We actually ran into one of friends on our way out, and her face just lit up when she saw them. It was really clear how special they were, and how loved. I don't know if I'll see them again, but it really was a pleasure. I hope they're doing well.

Stunningly, stunningly, terrifying

I was kind of taken aback, to be honest. I didn't know what to say. And that isn't to say that I disliked them or anything, they were perfectly polite to me, and I thought their outfit was really cool, but I don't know. Something about them was so... unsettling. More than that. Terrifying, even. Shockingly so. You know, I knew a girl a few years ago like that. If they teamed up, they could probably take over the world. I'll keep an eye out for their names in the news.

Picture perfect

To put it this way, they were everything I'd ever wanted to be. They reminded me of the kids in school I would always come second best to. It was funny to be sitting across the table from them; it seemed like I should be sitting in the audience watching them play the piano or give a speech or something. You know, they were such a perfectionist. They held themself accountable for every little thing. I felt a little sorry for them, to be perfectly honest. I didn't say that, though.

Halfling

I couldn't quite figure them out. They were sort of half light and half dark. Beautiful in a frightening sort of way and vice versa--it was unnatural, as well. Too beautiful and too frightening. I was almost expecting glowing eyes and sharp teeth. In the back of my head, I sort of wondered if they were planning on killing me just for the aesthetic of it. They didn't. I think they did steal my ring, though. That was alright. I would've given them anything they asked for, to be honest. It was just something about them.

I know you've got things to get back to back home, and you've got a lot waiting for you right around the corner. you wouldn't want to be late. mind yourself. come on, doors are in aisle 26. we'll find yours, and it'll take you to your next stop. don't ask me what it is, I don't know. some of my coworkers have been through the doors; some say it's heaven, some hell, some that it's different for everyone. some say that it's a lowes, but I think that they're kidding. no, you can't stay, it's time for the next part. that probably won't last forever either. nothing does. remember that impermanent doesn't mean insignificant. no, I can't come with you. you're on your own. chin up. be brave. you can do it. this is the hardest part. the next stage is never as frightening as you think it's going to be.

hold it, those doors aren't for you

you're going to be staying here in the store for a little while. what? how long? I don't know. maybe forever. I can't remember when I got here. you really don't notice the time, though. it's not a bad job. you stock the lumber. you greet the people when they come. I really think you'll have an aptitude for it. you seem to fit very well into liminal spaces. and I think the people will like you. you'll be helpful, and kind. though, and I wish I could tell you otherwise, you'll be invisible, in a sense. metaphorically. but you must be used to that, at least a little.

sorry about this. someone has to do it

we've got to walk through the warehouse. can't keep the weapons in the store where the customers will see them. you know, I won't try and tell you it isn't a hard job, but honestly, the hardest part might be that sometimes the monsters still look like people, and they'll scream like people when you kill them. usually they don't look like people, though, and they certainly aren't. they swarm the void around the store, and it's dangerous for customers if you don't kill them. someone's gotta do it, and you've got some experience with stuff like that, and it makes you tougher than most (sorry. I know.). one of the guys who used to do it just retired. that's the deal, you get to retire afterward. it's a long, hard fight night after night, but there's an end to it eventually. there always is.

"dark soul," someone else says, "sometimes they were born like this, sometimes they get messed up between death and arrival. they're a danger to customers either way. be careful, it'll run when you swing at it. we'll probably have to chase it through the void." desperately, you try to speak again. an awful screech echoes through the hall.
