With Navalny‘s death, Putin decapitates opposition, while the nuclear satellite space weapon development news leak, & so do plans to attack the Baltics, engaging NATO in the war.

Under Putin, many opposition leaders were shot or poisoned, including my friends Boris Nemtsov, Galina Statovoitiva, and Yuri Shchekochikhin, Sergey Yushenkov, and many others. Vladimir Kara-Murza and hundreds of others are in jail for speech.

Even in my youth, under Brezhnev, opposition, leaders were exiled —externally, like Alexanser Solzhenitsyn, or internally, like Andrey Sakharov. The Putin regime reminds us of the late-era Stalinism, with paranoid suspicions of spies everywhere, and livid hostility to the west.

As Gleb Pavlovsky repeatedly wrote and said, “The System is capable only of expansion and escalation, ending up in a war, implosion and self-destruction.” What we are watching is inexorable march to a clash with the west that may have catastrophic consequences to all of us.

We should keep in mind that Putin's KGB career was spent in foreign influence operations, in which he honed a number of subtle and less subtle techniques (but as a RAF member who worked with the then major in Dresden once told me, he was always particularly fond of assassinations). The Russian Federation's budget for such activities now far exceeds what was spent by the USSR during his professional career. And if you stop and think about it, the evidence of impact of these operations in America is all around us.

Alexei Navalny has died. If you're not familiar with the man, you should take the time to become so. He was commitment and bravery personified and he deserves to be remembered.

I know this was expected; there was no way a murderous POS like Putin would allow him to live. But it's still devastating. He was one of the few people I truly admired. Our world has so few people who are true heroes, and now it feels a little darker (as if it isn't dark enough) knowing he is gone.

To the people of Russia, my heart goes out to you. It seems there are so many good people who are living under the tyranny of monsters. People forget that PEOPLE in a nation are not their corrupt, evil leaders.

This truly breaks my heart. My faith in this world ever becoming a better place diminishes daily.

May he rest in peace. 😢

Like China didn’t block “#MeToo” to stop men harassing women in the tags…it was to silence it. Well funny the same thing is happening here with Apple. As someone who has been gifted Apple devices this is INCREDIBLY DISTURBING and WTF BIG BROTHER ANYONE!?

Frankly, I’m concerned less about how the expanded list of blocked tags on iOS is going to impact fandom content and more concerned about how blatant Apple is getting with their horseshit. Like, it’s obvious to anyone with half a brain that the actual aim of banning the word “antisemitism” is to prevent discussion of antisemitism, not to prevent antisemitic content itself, and they’re not even bothering to pretend it’s not. As much as we’d like to believe otherwise, the people behind these policies aren’t stupid; Apple knows they’re creating a walled garden where posting hateful content on social media is more acceptable than pointing out that such content is hateful, and it’s difficult to imagine they’re unaware of exactly who that walled garden is going to end up being most welcoming to.
