People love, love to bring up one-off moments of Yennefer at her worst. Yennefer who is mean, cold, haughty, angry, hurt, jealous, stand-offish.
It’s both funny and sad to me that people forget the rest. Yennefer, who ruins her expensive camlet dress without even realising it to save a woman having a miscarriage on the steps of Kaer Trolde. Yennefer, who gives the nervous young clerk Fabio Sachs the Younger such unexpected high praise that he blushes to the roots of his chestnut hair. Yennefer, who saves Giancardi’s family. Yennefer, who buys back Geralts swords without his knowledge - who has her own banker keep track of where he is looking for work, to make sure the region has a decent “Witcher fund”, even when they’re not together.
Yennefer, who on Skellige, earns the favour of Freyja, the patron goddess of motherhood; receives her grace, her diamond, her Brisingamen, because she is willing to endure more than the limits of human suffering for Ciri.
Yennefer has so many flaws: she’s a deeply broken, traumatised woman who’s prideful and knows how to play the ice queen. But if you don’t realise that Yennefer is also full of love for people around her, hidden kindness and compassion…you might want to read those stories again.

i shouldn't have to explain why deciding to not challenge geopolitical illiteracy and inability to understand the concept of "war" is a bad, bad decision.
asides from all of this being integral to the identity of the witcher, this goes far beyond the witcher.
shame on all of netflix's production for being complacent in this decline instead of holding their audiences to the higher standards of... i don't know, being able to grasp the real world that we live in, "the level of nuance and complexity" of real life.
if there are idiots, fuck them! make it for the rest of us who have brains - don't pander to idiocy and unwillingness to understand or learn! art should challenge its audience! disturb the comfortable, and comfort the disturbed!

… But there are other creatures of the same species that live in harmony with nature. In mountains, in woods. These I don’t chase… And some I don’t touch at all. For example…

netflix yennefer screaming and crying and throwing a tantrum every two minutes will never not be perversely funny to me. because books yennefer pretty much acts like a macho “tears are for bitches, you will never catch me crying” man. her entire thing in the books is that she does not cry and complain, instead, she just… acts and does. no bitching. bitching and whining is geralt’s domain
and that’s the whole point of her and geralt, that geralt (man) is deeply emotional, sensitive, and vulnerable, guilt-ridden and whiny, while yennefer (woman) only gets spiteful and vindictive when faced with the same kind of challenges. sapkowski switched the expectations for their genders and archetypes, to make interesting characters. if you switch them back then you’ve lost all their uniqueness and potential commentary on gender stereotypes

angoulême’s act
this post was on my fyp and unfortunately op made it unrebloggable but this is angoulême through and through
Tumblr media
yes angoulême is funny, sassy, silly, and acts brave, but inside she is actually very terrified and vulnerable and 🤏 this close from having an outburst of panic and fear 👍
she’s actually very unstable, like ciri, but she has no vysogota (or rather her vysogota is, could so be, five people, if these five people choose to be)
and if you read the text you would see this grave-serious side of her come out every so often, the survival instinct she surpresses to preserve her veneer of indifference.
the way it works is that she’s joking, joking… and then something drops, reality sets in, and she starts freaking out. this happens even in the very first time we meet her, when she starts begging fulko artevelde to be hanged and not tortured.
her reaction is even physical, kneejerk, unable to be hidden by the mask of confidence. the blood drains from her face in fear. she has an outburst of panicked frustration.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
it’s such a distinct shift in her behavior that even geralt comments on it, like “what the hell was that? what was she freaking out about?”
Tumblr media
but this is far from the only time we see angoulême letting her mask slip.
of course, the infamed scene of milva hitting her with the strap and her breaking down mid-joke and uncontrollably sobbing (yeah that sounds like a truly confident and carefree girl to me /s):
Tumblr media
but there’s even more subtle parts where her trauma, fear, and anxiety becomes plain on her face, such as when she remembers her past:
Tumblr media
or even when faced with a tense situation. even when she has the protection of geralt and cahir, terror grasps her. she freezes for a second and drops the confident, sassy act, confiding in geralt and cahir how she truly feels, what’s really up:
Tumblr media
note that directly after this moment of acute panic, of “oh shit, oh shit…” this is how she acts:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
funny. sassy. provoking a reaction. it’s all distinctly on purpose. she’s turned that brazen and indifferent side of her on.
it’s a performance. but inside, she’s panicking.
this is probably the best example, the pièce de résistance of it all. because the text, the narration, openly admits that it’s all an act:
Tumblr media
ineffectually = everyone could see her ‘bravery’ and ‘sass’ isn’t real, she’s convincing no one
pretending = it’s all a hopeless defense mechanism
she wasn’t afraid = she’s terrified.

i made my first witcher video!
youtube
hi everybody! if you've been following me for a while, you may know that i've been working on creating a witcher analysis youtube channel for a couple of years now (the kind that does video essays and deep dives).
though my first video is not an analysis, it is equally important—a biography and bibliography of author andrzej sapkowski's life and works! if you ever wondered how the witcher was created, this video is for you!
also... it's over an hour long! so i'd recommend that you watch it when you can get some time on your hands :)
