First slide: Mariota’s Guide to 14th Century (Medieval) Women’s Clothing

ALRIGHT LISTEN UP MOTHERS AND FUCKERS. I’m bored, so today we’re going to be talking about medieval clothing. Specifically fourteenth century English clothing because that’s what I’m good at. (Source: trust me bro I’m a reenacter). Also this is all female stuff - sorry masc leaning folks, I’ll get to you someday!

Second slide: Underwear (ooh la la)

Now with nasty pocketses

So, corsets, stays, and shapewear in general kind of wasn’t a thing yet. So your underwear was a shift, which was awesome because it was also your pajamas. They were usually made of linen, though some might have been made of cotton is you were rich.

There is evidence for supportive shifts for busy support, like this one from the fourteenth century!

There’s also this bra like fragment found in Austria, but that is a whole debate so.

Then, over the shift, yet under your main dress went your pockets, which tied on at the waist. Your dresses had slits do that you could get at your stuff without flashing everyone lol.

Third slide: your dress, or the cotehardie. (Pronounced coat hardy)

Over the shift you put your dress, sometimes referred to as either a kirtle or cotehardie. 14th century people started actually form-fitting their clothes more than previous centuries. These needed fastenings, which were mostly lacings (spiral lacings specifically), or buttons made of either metal or cloth, used at the front of the dress from neckline to waist, and on the sleeves from elbow to wrist, with exceptions of course.

(Sidenote: fuck sleeves, all my homies hate sleeves)

Dresses seemed to be mostly wool, though I often use linen for mine because I live in Australia and it’s hot in summer and I don’t want to die. Most often they weren’t lined (that is what the underwear was for).

The neckline of these dresses was usually round or an oval shape, and some manuscripts have it so wide that it falls off the shoulders slightly.

Clothing was a lot more colourful than the movies would have us believe lol.

Fourth slide: Dress two; electric boogaloo

You could also wear an overdress, which was usually of a contrasting colour and had shorter sleeves.

As well as fashion, they would have been used for extra warmth, and so were usually made of wool.

Common people would have only owned a couple of different outfits, as fabric was super expensive.

A common late thirteenth to mid fourteenth century overdress was the ladies surcoat, which had big holes instead of sleeves.

Belts would have been worn underneath the surcoat.

Fifth slide: Hair and headwear

Hair was worn braided and pinned up, with a coif (cap) and either a wimple or veil, or both. The wimple and/or veil were usually pinned to the coif, or secured on a band of fabric around the head.

Veils would be either oval, or a D shape. Wimples were rectangular. A wimple goes under the chin and a veil goes over your head.

All the headwear would be made of linen, thin wool, or silk, depending on class. The veils could also be made really fancy by ruffling the front edge or by attaching pearls.

I ride the bus in my medieval gear a lot because of events, and way too many people think I’m Amish because of my veil. It’s honestly just funny at this point. I should keep a tally.

Fake braids were a thing! Blonde hair in particular was very fashionable, and bleaching or fake braids were sometimes used to achieve that.

Sixth slide: Cloaks and hoods

These would have actually been two seperate garments! Integrated hoods on cloaks didn’t actually become a thing until the … seventeenth century or so? (Citation needed).

Cloaks were a lot simpler than the typical cloak we think of nowadays. Often they were just a rectangle of wool, or by the fourteenth century, sometimes a half circle.

They were almost always wool as far as I know, and were generally fastened by a cloak pin or buttons.

Women’s hoods could be short and open, or with a longer skirt and closed with buttons. Liripipe (pronounced leery-pipe) hoods were named for the tube of fabric that dangled off the back of your hood, varying in length. As well as a fashion statement, it could also be wrapped around the neck like a scarf if it got cold.

Hoods were nearly always wool I’m pretty sure, though they were often lined with linen, silk, or cotton.

[General description: a short liripipe hood would be open, with the bottom only reaching your shoulders. They were made from a single piece of fabric that would wrap over your head, with the seam down the centre back of your head. It was flared at the bottom by inserting triangular gores. At the front edge near your face there would be a strip jutting out that went from one side of your chin, over your head, and down to the other side. This would usually be folded back, revealing the lining colour. The bottom of the hood could either just reach the base of your neck, or reach down to just past your shoulders. The former would usually be open at the front, with fastenings optional. The latter option with the longer skirt was almost always able to be fastened up the front with fabric buttons. The liripipe itself was a thin flat tube of fabric fastened at the centre top back of the hood. End ID]

Fun fact, 90% of why I decided to reenact the fourteenth century specifically was because of liripipe hoods.

Seventh slide: Feet (not in a weird way)

Hose were used to keep your legs warm. For women they were usually knee height, and fastened just underneath it with a garter or tie.

Hose usually would have been made from wool, and were cut on the diagonal (bias) of the fabric to get the maximum stretch possible from the fabric. They still were looser than modern tights are though!

Knitted socks were also a thing I’m pretty sure, but I don’t know enough about them. Sorry!

Shoes were simple, usually referred to as turnshoes because of how they were made. Fun fact: the lack of foot support means that turnshoes are similar to going barefoot in terms of how you walk. Some reenactors love it, some hate it, and some are indifferent lol.

Because shoes were really hard to waterproof, (ask me how I know), and didn’t have solid soles, wooden pattens (pronounced pat-tens) were worn to keep you off the ground while outside.

Eighth slide: Accessories

These are a few other items that might have made up a working woman’s outfit.

Aprons would definitely have been used while working. One were just a large rectangle of cloth tucked into the belt, some were smocked to draw in the fabric. They generally stopped at the waist.

Pretty broaches and other jewellery existed! There was cheaper stuff made of pewter for the lower classes.

They had a funny sense of humour as well… and they weren’t all prudes.

Eating knives were worn on the belt, though it is debated whether women would have carried one. I do because I’m a modern fourteenth century woman.

Belts are a curiously debated topic. Some people reckon that women would have definitely worn them, others say they they weren’t used by women much at all. As far as I know there are depictions of both, so choose what you’d prefer. They are great for hanging stuff on I gotta say.

Pretty little purses would have probably been worn. I don’t know enough about them to say anything else though.

Ninth slide: Fancy Shmancy

There is a lot I haven’t covered, especially in the realm of the upper classes. Here is some of what has been missed. (Buckle up because this section is very image heavy. I will be as concise as possible).

Fancy headpieces for rich bitches only.

Fancy dagged edged on hoods, sleeves, dresses, etc.

Brocade gowns! So pretty!

Fancy sleeves!

Dis you notice all the “usually” “commonly” and “often’s” in there? That’s because I cannot possibly illustrate everything that we know of the time in only ten slides, nor do I know everything, so I have just tried to show what seems to be the most depicted.

I would think (from a non-homeschooler) that it would be easier on Malon to homeschool one or two boys than six.

Because Hyrule is my favorite character (along with Legend, they fight for first place) and I was re-reading the IAU.

How would he handle school? Did he have to be homeschooled for awhile since he couldn't read and, you know, trauma?

Yeah you know homeschooling would make a lot of sense, give him time to adjust to things at his own pace and all.

Two options for that: Hyrule is homeschooled the first year or two he's with them, to give him time to catch up and adjust, and after that sees his brothers going to school and decides he wants to go with them. At that point he's only a grade or two behind, so it's not too big of a deal.

Or, Hyrule keeps being homeschooled for a while, either until he graduates or up to maybe high school like my cousin did (maybe Four joins him when his powers come in and he keeps randomly splitting into four people... hmm).

The only problem here is I can't really think of a good reason as to why the rest of the boys wouldn't also just be homeschooled (a way to make hiding their kids powers a lot easier... It would make a lot of sense...), other then that it would mess up a whole ton of movie stuff XD

I did some metallic buttonhole samples a few years ago and have wanted to put them on a garment ever since, and am finally getting around to it!

These ones are made of little strips of metallic leather stitched down with fairly widely spaced buttonhole stitches, using doubled metallic thread. I'm using one thread for each side of the buttonhole, so it doesn't get the chance to wear out where the needle eye rubs against it, and doing a bar tack at each end as usual. Under that there's a cut and overcast hole (just like I did in my buttonhole tutorial) and I'll piece the lining in around them.

Do you think Loftwings can lay unfertilize eggs like chickens? If I recall, Cawlin & Strich threw some eggs at Link during the wing ceremony which I’m sure were from Loftwings. And do you think, like chicken eggs, Skyloftians eat them?

I don’t see why not, most birds can do that. Can you imagine trying to get the eggs, though? Trying to get them away from a brooding loftwing who’s fluffed and clacking her beak and looking irate? Haha no thank you

Here you go! Wars giving fairy Hyrule clothes he made.

my HC is that Warrior wanted to be a tailor as a kid but his father forced him to train as a soldier to "train the wuss out of him" so now post war he dabbles with sewing fairy clothes to indulge his inner child! (that and if Hyrule has a Fairyform that Warrior finds out about then Hyrule is getting SO many new fairy sized clothes that he needs a microbag to hold them all)

THIS IS SO SWEET BUT ALSO SO SAD 😭

I have a similar headcanon about him being a tailor, but I think it was a family business and his mom taught him to sew :)

I know for fact this man is the one mending holes in tunics (Legend, Time and Four definitely help too but I feel like Wars is the fussy one who will actually EDIT garments if need be. Like if Wind hits a growth spurt, to me Wars is the one buying new fabric to add to the end of his tunic to keep it longer or something)

For the head. Though I don't really recommend this pattern as it was most definitely done by someone who does not know how to make patterns. *Currently unavailable*

considering your love of warriors, do you have any fic recs?

There are SO many amazing fics out there, and this is gonna sound INSANE coming from me but most of the fics I read are about Twilight 😭

There was this one fic series I read and loved and I can’t find it, but it was about Legend and Warriors and they kinda became buddies who had each other’s backs? All I remember was something about chess and Legend called Warriors Bluebell (and if anyone can find this fic for me i will owe you my LIFE i think about it AT LEAST once a every two weeks and I think I read it months ago)

and then i gotta recommend one of my top 3 favorite fics EVER of all time and that would be Level One by LightBluScrubs on ao3. (IT IS COMPLETE!!)

It was written by someone who works in a trauma center and it’s an au about all of them working in a hospital and they all have their different roles to play to get Wild up and running again after a motorcycle accident. Twilight is the main character i think? But it focuses on all of them really, and you do get different povs. and I’m gonna be 100% honest: I wasn’t the biggest fan of modern au’s UNTIL I READ THIS FIC. (and, yknow, now I have au’s i myself am writing- don’t come at me, i’ve learned the error in my ways, i absolutely love au’s now they’re absolutely fantastic and amazing, i’ve learned i’ve repented)

is it intense at times? absolutely, and it’s a lot of medical stuff, but good lord above i reread it several times a months and i’ll probably go reread it after i hit the post button- the character relationships in that fic are so GOOD. AND ALL THEIR ROLES???? PERFECT. that kinda stuff ain’t for everyone but i love that fic so much and it’s absolutely everything to me, i love it DEARLY the ending made me tear up in the BEST way, it’s fantastic

i remember you mentioning before that you don't really do sketches- just get straight to the lineart. the sketching/lineart process takes way more time than everything else, for me, and i was wondering if you have any tips for doing it your way?

The answer to how I do this might not be what you want to hear: A lot of practice. I've put a frick ton of time into learning to draw fast, because it is a skill like any other with art.

I can share some quick tips on how I practised and my thinking process though, if people still are curious and may wanna give it a shot!

One of the main ways I practiced this was by using permanent pens and markers while doodling in school. I always disliked how pencil smudged so that came kinda naturally to me, but it was a huge help anyway!

When you work directly onto a pristine white canvas with no guideline you're forced to really think about where you put each line, and get over the fear of mistakes. By doing this you can grow a natural understanding of where the next thing you're going to draw should be.

(Sorry if the picture is not a good explanation, I've never been much a teacher. (Also for full disclosure I did use ctrl+z when drawing this example.)) Here I tried to picture how by having the face shape lined, I can use knowledge of anatomy and what looks good to place the eye of the character in. Then with the eye in I can "Unlock" more feature locations!

It also helps being familiar with the character... I've drawn the cast of this comic so many times that these boys just show up when I ask lol.

This approach has a lot of issues, like it can be very hard to keep a character design consistent. Another is that if u get too bogged down on doing the same thing that works you're going to start making some really stale looking art-- It's so important to not just draw what works but to go for ugly perspectives and weird experiments.

Still, I hope this can help someone! It's not a method that works for everyone, but it's a fun one to explore :)

I'm fairly certain Wars has a pretty good income in his Hyrule lol. He may not be wealthy but still enough to pay for 9 people and horse at an Inn for +/- week(s).

Another day another LU analysis with me!

Dawn 9 is here and with it the end of the next arc of the LU comic is done!

This update did a lot and is also a full 10 pages long! So there's a bunch to unpack!

Without further ado!

The letters!

So, Twilight, four and Time all appeared to get letters, with Time getting multiple (More on that later)

Twilights reaction to the super sale was my reaction while playing TP (I recently finished it for the first time! :D) when they opend the store in castle town. Every time i couldnt get there to get potions i was low key gutted.

And Four. Four's grandpa is a mood and i hope we get to meet him.

But... I, as a part of the The team is heading to Skyloft next, team. Believe that Sun has done this on purpose. (Or that the Skyloftians dont have the mail system for him to retrieve anything) but i like to think its the first one.

Hmmm.... Time got multiple letters. (That takes care of the letter discrepancy)

Twi asking about the ranch, Time looking to one of the letters. This tells me one of two things.

The letter he's looking to could be from Malon, and he's genuenly not concerned.

or The letter he's looking at isnt from malon. Infact, by the way he's looking at it i think its from his Zelda. Possibly a report about black bloods in his time period. (As last time we see them in Time's era. They dont actually fight anything)

Twilight being cheeky and Time's dad face are giving me life.

But... as we know, Time is Twilights direct decendant only by a few generations at most. With the infomation we have from Twilight princess with Shade. And from jojo with Time and Twilight. I'm seeing this conversation as more of a father and son conversation over brothers.

And the rest of this conversation follows this same pattern. Twilight is very much being scolded. He's biting back with what he see's as Time's own words. (not that time know's as such)

Twilight looks genuenly shocked to hear this.

From the hero's shade (Time) in twilight princess.

"You may be destined to become the hero of legend...but your current power would disgrace the proud green of the hero's tunic you wear. "

I am screaming

And now im screaming more. Twilight nooooooooooooo

The we care about Twilight's well being gang. Spoiling us with the full body shots againnnnnnn.

Give me more of these three i love them all together.

And I'm convinced that theres going to be something bad happens to time directly after the end of the LU timeline.

Time is missing an eye. So we know that Shade and Time are closer together than the hero of time (In game). SO.... If time dosent Die on the adventure with the chain. I'm almost convinced he does almost right after he returns back to his time.

The armour is almost identical. He has most of the scaring which lines up....

If the helmet turns up, then i think Time dies during this adventure. It's the only thing i can see as missing.

Twilight.... Now i think Twilight thinks that the gods are giving him an opportunity to save the hero of time from dying to become the heros shade. but thats the funky thing about timetravel.

(Depending on how Jojo and LU time travels works.)

I believe that the timetravel in LU solidifies the adventures of the other links. And that nothign that occours in this adventure impacts their adventures. Even if something was changed it wouldnt change the past.

IE - Twilight breaking his shadow crystal wouldnt mean that wild didnt remember having the wolf on his adventure - as its already happened.

(I hope that makes sense. - time travel is confusing i see it as an alternative timeline type thing)

Wind rolled down the stairs you cant convince me otherwise. Look at his little superhero pose as hes moving around the corner.

Also Warriors, This is normal link behaviour. Just ask Time. He would eailsy tell you that he rolled around hyrule field.

Sky leading the charge! (I know its cause he knows the way and stuff But...)

It also makes a lot of sense. If Sky is the slowest of the group(Again not confirmed but we have had jokes about his stamina), it makes sense to put him at the front to maintain pace of the group. Stops people going too fast and prevents people from being left behind.

Which i might add has already happened. (Warriors and Hyrule im looking at you.)

We just need to read the boss partterns for a bit so we can then decide how to fight it. You know, like we did when we were in our adventures and had to figure out boss mechanics.

Important that hyrule is saying this as his game is arguably one of the hardest. He probably spent a long time on each boss learning attack patterns.

Oh this arc was fun! So much fun i love it so much okay
