I painted this piece a couple months ago and as soon as I finished it, the swirls of green and gold reminded me of a wicked wizard casting a spell across an ominous, dark sky! Orange, orange, orange! I painted this piece last July. I was so proud of it that I didn't think I could do any better. I clipped the paper up to dry and let it hang for 5 months. I didn't intend for the break to last so long, but I was tired and needed to take some time to myself to recharge and focus on other aspects of life. Also, I was afraid I'd ruin it during the varnishing/mounting process. Well, here it is completed and I wish I hadn't waited so long. Better late than never, I guess! Have you ever tried something just for shits and giggles, then surprisingly liked the outcome? That's what happened here. When you look at this piece at one angle, the gold shines, but then when you change your perspective, the white outlines are emphasized and the gold fades away. Here they are all together—My first triptych and biggest piece to date! These were a challenge to photograph. One angle accentuates the ink colors but masks the metallics while another angle accentuates the metallics, but degrades the true colors of the inks. Any tips for photographing your art? I ended up taking dozens of photos in different types of light: daylight and dusk. The colors and metallics changed so much throughout the day. Swipe to see the lighting comparison. In my last post, I said I hoped you were ready for some suspense while you waited for me to reveal the second piece of the Monsoon triptych… What I didn’t plan for is what came after that. The day after my birthday, I caught a terrible stomach bug for about ten days. I still don’t feel completely back to normal yet, but I’m getting there. At the beginning of it, I was in a rush to get better because I was supposed to leave for a week-long West Coast / Vegas trip with friends the next weekend. I ended up not going because I was so sick and in no shape to travel across the country. On the bright side, I was able to spend time with my family and slow down a bit. I realized how hard I was pushing myself to keep creating art while balancing my day job with regular day-to-day life. This month break has made me realize how unsustainable that pace really was. I think that’s part of the reason I got sick. I was doing too much, not sleeping enough and not taking care of myself well enough. All that to say, I’m back! But, I’m taking the pressure off. I’m still going to continue to create art, but maybe not at the capacity I was before. Like I said, it wasn’t sustainable and I burned myself out. Less frequent posting might be bad for the social media algorithms or whatever, but I don’t create art for that. I create art for creativity’s sake and the joy that comes with the process. Thanks for sticking around while I find a new balance. Stay tuned for the third piece of the triptych.
