Evon Walters – How Education Affects Community
The  impact that education has on individuals is well known. Graduates of secondary and postsecondary programs have increased hiring rates, lower unemployment, higher earnings, and greater job security. This is why many educational institutions have programs that focus on the retention and completion of degree programs within their student body. The issue, however, goes far beyond the individual concerns of any given student. The impact that education has on community is something that, until recently, did not occupy much space in the discourse of higher education.
Education contributes to greater economic prosperity because individuals work in higher-level jobs, drive business development and earn more money. Higher earning potential means greater community development and tax income, which support buildings and infrastructure. Many social conditions also improve based on higher education. Education has been shown to improve health conditions and voting rates, as well as decrease incarceration levels and instances of crime.
The impact of education on community is a topic that has garnered much attention recently. This has led to the creation of programs and organizations within schools and communities that promote the education of individuals. The Battle Creek College Access Network is an organization that recognizes the importance of education in benefiting local communities. Dr. Evon Walters, currently serving on the board of directors for the Battle Creek College Access Network, has been a thought partner in contributing to the organization’s mission of cultivating a college going culture. “Ensuring access starts early and should be consistently and creatively communicated to our students, particularly to populations that are historically under-represented?
There are a number of angles from which the Battle Creek College Access Network aims to attack this issue. It involves creating an aggressive outreach campaign to students within the k-12 system.

Evon Walters – Refining the Integrity of Higher Education through Multiculturalism
Without diversity, the world would be a rather boring place. Diversity teaches us to look beyond the limits of our environment and experiences, which helps us to become informed, open-minded citizens of the inherently multicultural world we live in. Emphasizing diversity and multiculturalism is especially important in the classroom. In early education, multicultural activities foster positive socialization behaviors among children. Today, with the vast interconnections among all nations in the world, multiculturalism is increasingly important in higher education. Institutions of higher education are microcosm societies of the communities and nations they are apart of, which gives them a unique opportunity of enabling students to embrace the global perspectives that are an integral part of a multicultural education.
Yet, for some reason, the failure rate for students of color in American higher education over the past two decades has remained a pressing issue. Dr. Evon Walters has been involved in higher education since he began his career as the Dean of Multicultural Affairs at Clark University in 1993. Throughout his professional life, the magnitude of institutional commitment to diversity and multiculturalism has been a central part of his efforts to transform and improve the general state of higher education. At the core of this debate is the idea that examining this issue is the primary step in providing accessible and quality education for all children, an idea that is pervasive amongst advocates of higher education.
As the Chairperson and Assistant Professor of Education at Olivet College and Michigan, Dr. Walters knows what it means to be a part of an academic institution committed to multiculturalism. Olivet College is a private liberal arts college that was founded in 1844 by abolitionists and was the first college in the nation to accept women and people of color. In 1992, a hostile racial incident resulted in the school’s decision to initiate enormous institutional reformations. It began by drafting a school mission statement that promised to provide campus-wide academic culture so that students will come to understand the need to serve others as well as themselves, and to celebrate the wealth of human diversity. They also developed a set of six institutional priorities that incorporated a multicultural agenda, including “to prepare all students at the College to participate effectively in a diverse society.”
Dr. Evon Walters believes higher education should provide a nurturing and supportive system for all people, despite race or ethnicity. Academic intuitions have a duty to perpetuate and embrace multiculturalism as a mainstream institutional agenda. Through these practices, they promote a community of global understanding and communication.

Evon Walters – The Importance of Integrating Technology And Education
In the modern age, technology is one of the key aspects of successful learning. Technology is everywhere – in our homes, in our places of work, even in our pockets. Young people today have grown up with a standard of technology that has become integral to the way they live their lives, and it is for this reason that students demand the interactive educational potential that technology brings to schools. Technology allows students to learn at their own pace, while keeping them consistently engaged with education. It can also enhance the relationship between teachers and students; when teachers effectively integrate technology into the classroom, they help make learning more meaningful and fun.
Dr. Evon Walters believes anything that engages students with the educational process is worth investing in. Dr. Walters views education as the cornerstone of almost every successful and profitable individuals and societies, which is why he has dedicated his career to advancing educational systems across the country. A graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Dr. Walters began his professional career as the Dean of Multicultural Affairs at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. Since then, he has held many esteemed positions, including Chairperson and Assistant Professor of Education at Olivet College in Michigan, Vice President for Student and Enrollment Services at Montgomery County Community College in Pennsylvania, and Executive Dean and Campus CEO at Suffolk County Community College in New York.
It was at Suffolk County Community College that Dr. Walters demonstrated his commitment to technology in the educational arena. In 2013, he was part of the initiative to build the new Student Success Center, which provides students with multiple academic services, such as registration, counseling, and advising, in a conveniently located, high-tech manner. After checking in at the concierge, students can enjoy a comfortably furnished environment while a dynamic, oversized LED display keeps students informed about their position in the queue. The lounge also provides students with self-serve kiosks where they can check information about their academic records, classes, and more, enabling them to utilize their queuing time more efficiently.
Dr. Walters said the project was developed to expand the college’s capacity to serve their students in a mindful, technologically savvy way that relates to their everyday experiences. It enhances the overall student experience by fostering student engagement, persistence, and success – crucial components of what defines first-rate higher education.

Evon Walters – Being a Teaching Assistant
Evon Walters has spent many years in academia holding quite a large variety of positions. He has served as chairperson of the education department at Olivet College in Michigan, served as the Dean of Multicultural Affairs at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, has been a Research and Teaching Assistant at the University at Massachusetts at Amherst, and has taught both at the undergraduate and graduate levels at Olivet College and Stony Brook University.
What exactly does being a teaching assistant entail? The first thing to note is that teaching assistants are just as important as the primary professors. They help to make sure everything is running smoothly. Most teaching assistants at the University level are for students who would like to observe and have a hand in higher-level decisions regarding the content of the course, as well as have continuous interactions with other students. Being a teaching assistant is a great opportunity for students who want to enter into academia and would like to get a taste of what it would like to be apart of it.
Here are some tips that can help you be the best teaching assistant possible. First of all always prepare for whatever you may need to do. If you are able to plan a part of a class, take advantage of this opportunity and get creative. If you are unsure where to begin ask other teaching assistants and the professor for past materials used and build something new off of that. Either way before you enter the classroom you need to be prepared and have a plan set in place as well as the required materials to successfully lead the activity. Another key thing is being knowledgeable.
If you are going to teach other students about something make sure you know the topic very well, you don’t want to be in a situation where you can’t answer the students’ questions because it ultimately makes you look unprepared. One of the absolutely most important things is being able to communicate clearly and effectively, because if you don’t students will not successfully learn things from you. It is essential that you lecture in a way that is interesting and easy to follow as well as engaging. Provide explicit examples and truly pain a picture for the students. These are only a few tips that can help you succeed in your first journey into academia.
