How to get rid of Keratosis Pilaris
When it comes to your skin, there are numerous things to look out for, like Keratosis Pilaris. Unlike internal organs, the skin is exposed to a lot of hazards due to daily routines and deposit of waste products on the skin's surface. Therefore, skin care is highly important. You should keep your skin fresh and healthy from all the exposure. Skin diseases or inflammation can cause damage varying from health issues, irritation, low self-esteem, and poor socialization. Things like what you eat, the season, daily routine, and personal hygiene can affect the texture and condition of your skin, either positively or negatively. With that in mind, let's discover how to get rid of Keratosis Pilaris. What is Keratosis Pilaris? To begin with, Keratosis Pilaris is a completely natural skin condition.  It occurs in numerous age range, from children to adults. It is in no way harmful to you. A common name for this condition is chicken skin because it resembles goosebumps.  They are only slightly bigger. Keratosis Pilaris tends to occur around the arms, buttocks, thighs and in some cases around the cheeks. Usually it is skin-colored, but in some cases they can be black or even white. Areas around the bumps are usually reddish and may slightly itch you. Note that it is not acne, so treatments for acne won’t be effective.  So if you’ve been trying out over-the-counter medications for acne and you are wondering why it’s not working, that’s because what we are treating here is quite different. Keratosis Pilaris is usually visible in clusters of up to 50 or even 100 bumps. Unlike other skin inflammations, chicken skin doesn’t hurt or cause severe irritation because of the nature of it's formation. The only problem is that it makes that area of the skin unattractive.  Unfortunately, it can’t be cured.  However, it can be prevented and maintained. What are the causes of Keratosis Pilaris? Keratin or Keratinocytes are skin protein cells which are formed at the epidermis layer and make up the outer skin (dermis). They protect the skin from the harmful effects of our environment and also aid in the regeneration process. While this is all good, how does this lead to Keratosis Pilaris? As we mentioned earlier, Keratosis Pilaris is a natural process. Everyone builds up keratin.  However, the difference is when this keratin cells form.  When forming, they clog the skin's pores resulting in chicken skin. Normally, dead skin cell on the outer surface of the skin will shed themselves thus getting rid of these keratin cells. However, when the keratin becomes plugged in the hair follicles, it makes it impossible to shed them away resulting in Keratosis Pilaris. While it is still unclear why Keratosis Pilaris occurs, several scientific theories also show other possibly causes of the skin condition. But to keep it in simple terms, dead skin cells that are not shed can cause Keratosis Pilaris due to the presence of keratinocytes in them. As scientific research also shows, this condition can also be hereditary.  Therefore, in many cases, this condition may be as a result of a genetic skin condition in the family. Finally, I would also be remiss not to mention that poor personal hygiene and skin care can also result in chicken skin.  Not cleansing your skin correctly and moisturizing can leave you vulnerable to many conditions. Fortunately, there are no significant symptoms of Keratosis Pilaris.  The only major symptom is the  visible cluster of bumps that occur on the skin surface and the dry skin area around them. Occurring more in adolescents than in adults, Keratosis Pilaris tends to disappear or drastically reduce after the age of 30. Can Keratosis Pilaris be cured? The simple and honest answer is no. Why? Because Keratosis Pilaris is caused by the formation of keratin which is a naturally occurring process of the body. So the problem is not with the process of it's formation. Rather, it is caused by complications within the process causing the clogging of skin pores or plugging of hair follicles. In spite of this, there is no need to worry.  This condition can be prevented and/or managed.  When done properly,  you can avoid the conditions that gives way for Keratosis Pilaris to form. As long as you avoid these conditions and take care of your skin, the risk of having chicken skin is reduced. When treating Keratosis Pilaris you can apply either artificial or natural methods. Whichever you choose, always consider your skin’s level of sensitivity. Any remedy that you are reacting to should be stopped immediately. I recommend natural remedies because they are less harmful and have little or no side effects. Is Keratosis Pilaris harmful to my health? Keratosis Pilaris is not harmful to your health or skin. It is just a natural skin condition that is very common. The only effect is it has can be related to your outward appearance.  Depending on where it is located on the body, it may have an affect on your self-confidence and socialization. Health-wise, however, chicken skin is completely harmless. Psychological effects With Keratosis Pilaris, the major affect is psychological. This typically can prove to be more problematic than some other physical effects. As humans, we are usually concerned about how people look at us or how presentable we are in the society. Most people with this condition often see themselves as unattractive and may shy away from people. As a result, this condition can cause a lack of self-confidence in oneself which can have a negative impact on their self-esteem. Sufferers tend to ask questions like; "why am I like this?" or "why am I different from other people?". Women tend to be especially vulnerable to this effect because they are more conscious of their outward appearance. Just know that if you are having this issue, you are not alone. It is a common and completely natural condition that can be prevented. When properly managed, you can be confident that you to can have healthier looking skin. Now, I expect you are wondering "How can I get rid of Keratosis Pilaris naturally?"  We will be answering that question for you shortly. How can I get rid of Keratosis Pilaris naturally? Need Natural Remedies For Anxiety And Stress?
Anxiety and stress are a natural part of life. But, sometimes they can be a bit overwhelming. In fact, anxiety has become one of the most common mental health issues diagnosed today. Both anxiety and stress have been linked to depression and other serious health conditions when experienced over long periods of time. So, it’s pretty important to maintain a healthy level of anxiety and stress in your life. There are many ways that you can help reduce these too. In addition to medications prescribed by physicians for specific anxiety and stress disorders, there are many different ways that you can treat anxiety naturally. Of course, anyone experiencing anxiety or stress should consult with their physician before using natural remedies. And, natural remedies for anxiety and stress should not be used in place of medication when treating specific conditions. What are Natural Remedies? Natural remedies are simply that. They are a way to help deal with a specific condition or issue, like anxiety or stress, with non-pharmaceutical solutions. This can include things such as diet, essential oils, vitamins, supplements, and exercise. Natural remedies are typically used to supplement traditional medicine, not replace it. And, anyone interested in natural remedies should be sure to consult with a doctor first. The Pros and Cons of Using Natural Remedies For Anxiety And Stress  Natural remedies have become extremely popular for helping reduce anxiety and stress. But, they’re not without their pros and cons. There has been a good amount of research on the positive and negative aspects of using natural remedies to help reduce anxiety and stress. Here are a few of the positive reasons to consider when thinking about adding natural remedies. Pros: Free or Low-Cost: One potential benefit of using natural remedies is that they can often be free or have a lower cost associated with them. Consider if you’re using remedies, like yoga or meditation. Both can be done at home without any additional costs. Many different kinds of natural remedies -- though not all -- don’t have any major costs attached to them, making them an affordable way to help tackle anxiety and stress. Of course, there are some natural remedies that may be a bit more expensive. So, do be sure to consider cost when using a specific natural remedy. Non-Pharmaceutical: If you are looking to avoid or supplement conventional treatments, natural remedies may be a good starting point. There are many different types of natural remedies that don’t require you to take any medications. However, as with any type of treatment, do consult with your doctor to see if trying natural remedies before taking medication is right for you. Overall Health & Wellness: One added bonus of natural remedies is that they are often beneficial, not just for anxiety and stress, but also for your overall health. Exercise, for example, is not only a way to help combat anxiety and stress, but it’s also a way to improve your cardiovascular health and maintain a healthy weight. So, there’s a pretty good chance a natural remedy will do double-duty and offer several potential health benefits. Cons: Not a Substitute for Medical Treatment: One of the most important things to know about natural remedies is that they should not be used as a substitute for medical treatment. While they can provide some additional support, they should not be relied to treat anxiety and stress disorders. Always consult with a physician to discuss the options and to see if natural remedies should be added as a supplement to treatment. May Not Be Effective: While there is a lot of anecdotal evidence that natural remedies are effective at helping reduce anxiety and stress, there is also scientific research that indicates that some natural remedies may not be as effective. With this in mind, do consider the type of natural remedy and how effective research studies indicate it might be. May Require Using Multiple Natural Remedies: As with any type of health and wellness remedy, natural remedies often work best when combined with others. Like using conventional medical treatment with natural remedies, combining several natural remedies together may help with anxiety and stress more than just one. The Science Behind Natural Remedies Natural remedies are often considered, “alternative medicine,” in the medical community. This means that they have some potential to offer health and wellness benefits to a variety of conditions but are not generally considered to be the most effective ways to treat a condition. Yet, according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health nearly 4 in 10 adults in the United States use some type of alternative medicine. With so many Americans using some type of alternative medicine, there is a strong interest from the scientific community to research how effective they are. In general, research shows that natural remedies have the potential to positively impact health and wellness. But, different types of natural remedies seem to be more effective than others, according to research. If you’re interested in using natural remedies to help with your own anxiety and stress, consider looking into some of the basic research about the particular home remedies before you use them. Best of the Best: The Top 10 Natural Remedies For Anxiety And Stress  Now that we know a bit more about what natural remedies are, the pros and cons of using them, and the scientific research behind them, let’s take a look at the top 10 natural remedies that you can use starting today to help with anxiety and stress. 1. Exercise Exercise may not seem like a natural remedy that can help with anxiety and stress. But, activities like running, walking, and even lifting weights can actually be a good way to tackle anxiety and stress. Exercise not only helps you maintain good physical health, which leads to reduced stress, but your body also produces endorphins when you exercise -- another way that your body helps regulate stress and anxiety. Research has shown a positive correlation between exercise and its impact on overall stress levels, mood, and sleep. So, there’s pretty good evidence that exercise is good for your body and mind. In fact, many scientists and even psychologists have suggested that even a short amount of exercise can help stimulate natural anti-anxiety effects produced by the body. That means taking a short walk or simple fitness activity on a daily basis has the potential to help alleviate symptoms of anxiety and stress. Of course, like any medication or other type of natural remedy, your results may vary. So, what works for one person might not work for another. But, there’s no doubt that adding exercise into your routine can be a very good thing. 2. Meditation When your brain is racing with thoughts of anxiety and stress, it can feel like it’s hard to quiet your mind. Meditation is one way that you can work to help navigate anxiety and stress in a mindful way. Meditation is a practice of focusing the mind on a particular thought, object, or even activity to help you feel mentally clear and calm. It’s been an important practice in yoga and even some religions, such as Buddhism, for thousands of years. And, there’s been a lot of research on it. In fact, recent studies through major U.S. universities, like John Hopkins, has shown that there is some evidence to support meditation’s positive effects on anxiety and stress. The results of these studies combined with anecdotal evidence have made meditation a much more popular natural remedy lately. In fact, you can find lots of resources, such as guided meditations, on sites like YouTube or even as free or low cost apps for your mobile device. These are good ways to explore meditation if you’re new to this natural remedy. 3. Yoga Combining the benefits of exercise and meditation, yoga is a practice that originated in ancient India. It focuses on a combination of physical and mental activities to help calm the body and mind. Although there is often a spiritual aspect to yoga through several different types of religious practices, anyone can do yoga for its physical and mental benefits. In fact, many studies have shown that yoga can promote relaxation. But, the benefits of yoga don’t just stop there. Many studies have shown that yoga can have a positive effect on reducing anxiety and stress too. That’s because practicing yoga has a direct impact on your body’s production of GABA, which has been shown to naturally help your body stay calm and relaxed. So, if you’re looking for a natural remedy that has a lot of potential benefits for reducing anxiety and stress, yoga might be a good option for you. 4. A Healthy Diet They say, “You are what you eat.” Having a healthy and balanced diet can be really important for maintaining good health and wellness. A healthy diet is one that includes a variety of vitamins and nutrients that your body needs to function at its best. It also means eating a proper amount of calories on a daily basis. Too few calories or too many calories can greatly impact feelings of anxiety and stress because you’re not getting the fuel your body needs. The types of foods that you eat may also play a role in weight loss or gain, which affects your overall health. Research indicates that anxiety can often be associated with lower amounts of antioxidants. So, incorporating foods rich in antioxidants might be a good natural remedy to boost your intake. Foods like beans, apples, pecans, and kale, are all rich in antioxidants, according to the USDA. Studies have also shown that certain foods may also naturally reduce anxiety and stress due to the vitamins and nutrients contained in them. These include foods rich in magnesium, like spinach, or those rich in zinc, like cashews, are all potentially good foods to add to your diet. Omega-3s, in particular, have been heavily researched for its effect on anxiety and stress. So, fatty fish, like Salmon, might be a good food to consider adding into your diet on a more regular basis. Of course, there are many different types of foods and approaches to eating a healthy diet. Do be sure to consult with a physician before you begin any major diet changes. 5. Herbal Teas Tea has been used for thousands of years for medicinal and relaxation purposes. With so many ancient traditions using tea for health and wellness, scientists have been very interested in its effects on the mind and body. Studies have shown that different types of tea can have potentially positive effects, such as reducing blood pressure and calming the nervous system. Some types of herbal teas, made with specific herbs such as ashwagandha, chamomile, and passionflower, are also known to help reduce anxiety and stress. Because herbal teas come from plants, be cautious if you suffer from any seasonal or plant allergies. In addition, the interactions between herbal tea and medications isn’t well studied. So, be sure to discuss with your doctor before adding herbal tea into your diet to help reduce anxiety and stress. 6. Detox Detoxification, called detox, is a way of ridding the body of certain toxins or substances in your body to help improve your overall health. Often, we think of detox as it is associated with substance abuse. But, detox of the body has been a popular way to cleanse the body of anything that might not be good since the mid-1800s. Today, detox often includes fasting (i.e. not eating anything for a certain period of time), avoiding specific foods, or colon cleansing. Science shows mixed results regarding detoxification -- though there is evidence that removing certain toxins or foods from your diet can have positive effects on your overall health and mental wellness. If you are interested in any kind of whole body detox, do make sure to consult with a physician to make sure you’re doing so safely. 7. Aromatherapy Aromatherapy is the use of plant oils for specific natural health and wellness remedies. Like yoga and many other natural remedies shown here, Aromatherapy is often used to help reduce anxiety and stress. That’s because the scents from essential oils, the basis for Aromatherapy, provide a soothing and calming effect. Research studies support this too. They have shown that certain oils, like lavender, may reduce the heart rate to help you stay calm and relaxed. Essential oils can be used in a variety of ways. The most common are topical applications, such as massage oils, and inhalation applications, like sprays or diffuser. Essential oils should never be taken by swallowing them. That’s because taking them orally can cause medication interactions and severe damage to the liver or kidneys. But, the effects of the scents produced by aromatherapy are deemed to be a safe way to incorporate them into your anxiety and stress management routine. Do make sure that you use caution with aromatherapy. If you have a certain medical condition like high blood pressure, some essentials oils are not advised to use. This is also true for those who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have specific allergies. When in doubt, consult with your doctor before using essential oils. 8. Cannabidiol Oil One new natural remedy that is gaining popularity is Cannabidiol Oil (CBD Oil). Derived from the hemp plant and the cannabis (or marijuana) plant, both of these oils are thought to provide relief for those with anxiety and stress. Unlike marijuana, CBD Oil, in particular, does not have the same effects. This means, those using it won’t feel a “high.” That’s due to the lack of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) found in other marijuana products. The research on the effects on this natural remedy aren’t as widespread yet because it’s new. But, the research that has been done shows that there is a lot of potential for CBD Oil to help with anxiety and stress. Though not fully confirmed, scientists think that CBD oil may impact serotonin levels, which directly impact things like depression and anxiety. Because CBD oil comes directly from the marijuana plant, it may not be legal to consume in some states or may require a medical prescription to take. Do make sure you research whether or not you can purchase this legally in your state. Even if you purchase CBD Oil online, it may still require verification that you are allowed to use it in your state. And, don’t forget to discuss it with your doctor, especially if a prescription is required to purchase it. 9. Natural Supplements The most common natural remedies for anxiety and stress are supplements. These are often found in pill or capsule form and contain concentrated versions of a specific plant, vitamin, or nutrient. There is some research that supports the effectiveness of certain supplements. But, there is also a lot of questions about them too. One of the biggest challenges is quality. Many commercial supplements may be synthesized or come from poor sources -- making their effectiveness a lot less. Quality is also not regulated by the FDA. So, there’s not a lot of checks and balances in place to ensure that supplements have the best ingredients or are effective. If you are interested in taking certain supplements, do make sure that you talk to a physician before taking them. That’s because many supplements can interact with medications or affect certain medical conditions negatively. But, with the right supplements, those with anxiety and stress may see positive results. Some of the most popular supplements for anxiety and stress include Vitamin B, Kava Root, Ashwagandha, and Magnesium. 10. Sleep When it comes to a natural remedy that’s easy to add into your life, it’s sleep. Sleep is a natural part of our daily routine. And, everyone needs to sleep to rest, recoup, and recharge. Researchers have found that a lack of sleep can negatively impact your health and wellness and can actually worsen feelings of anxiousness. This means getting a good night’s sleep can potentially reduce feelings of anxiety and stress. Of course, sometimes when you’re feeling anxious or stressed, getting to sleep can be difficult. In this case, looking to incorporate other natural remedies, like the ones listed here, can help make sleep a little easier when combating anxiety and stress. Reducing Anxiety and Stress with 10 Natural Remedies  Anxiety and stress might be a natural part of life. But, it doesn’t have to affect your life in a negative way. Avoid Supplements When Pregnant or Breastfeeding: Mushrooms, in general, are typically allowed during pregnancy and breastfeeding. But, there is not a lot of research on the Maitake Mushroom, specifically. So, you should consult with your doctor before consuming. It is recommended that those who are pregnant or breastfeeding should avoid taking Beta Glucan as a supplement. That’s because the risk of taking these supplements has not be heavily researched. So, it’s not a bad idea to avoid these types of supplements throughout the pregnancy and breastfeeding process. Be Cautious When Taking Blood Pressure Medication: If you’re taking blood pressure medication, it’s always important to consult with a doctor before taking certain supplements, like Beta Glucan, to make sure there are not any known issues. Although Beta Glucan is not necessarily known for lowering blood pressure, it may affect a variety of other conditions that are known to affect blood pressure. Whole Body Detox, Your How To Guide
Tumblr media
How To Do A Whole Body Detox
In the past, humans have always felt a need to rid the body of anything that could cause it harm. Ancient Ayurveda practitioners would detox through a cleansing practice called panchakarma, which consisted of sweating, using certain herbs and oils, as well as massage, as a way of purifying and performing a whole body detox. In this century, the word detox has a very different association, to do with celebrities and attempting to cure alcohol or drugs addictions. While this may be a part of a detox, it is not necessarily, by any means, the only part. Another false association we have is the idea of fasting or going on a juice diet. While you can fast or try intermittent fasting, you do not have to eat less in order to detox your body. What is a whole body detox? As the name suggests, this detox is aimed at revitalizing and cleansing your whole body. This also includes aiding more positive thinking, and allowing old emotions or things we may be hung up on, to be let go of. It can be quite an intense process, so it is important not to force anything, and to always be careful with oneself during this kind of a journey. Signs a detox might be a good idea for you If you are feeling any discomfort in terms of your digestive system, it might just mean that a detox is in order. Constipation and/or gas and bloating are often signs that we have too many toxins in our bodies. Other signs include mood swings, regular headaches, aches and pains and skin problems. You may also simply have dark circles under your eyes or have a different body odor than before. If anything seems off with your body, it is always advisable to go and see your doctor before taking any other action towards improving your health, including a detox. Anyone can benefit from detoxification as, in this day and age, our bodies are exposed to a lot more chemicals than ever before. One study even found that babies that had just been born, had already been exposed to 232 toxic chemicals. Scientists estimate that we each, on average carry 700 contaminants in our bodies. We are also being exposed to a lot more content than ever before. Watching more stimulating videos than ever, must be having an effect on our brains, seeing more news in social media streams of what our friends are doing can also effect us emotionally. There is, however, no need to panic! The body is a wonderful thing and can very effectively deal with a lot of different substances. We believe, however, that it can't hurt to give it a helping hand. If you clicked this link, then you likely agree that this could be a good idea. Possible benefits of a Whole Body detox: Helps cleanse the liver (and improves hormone balances) Can help reduce or avoid inflammation Aids weight loss (especially when it seems nothing else will help) Healthier skin Helps avoid unnecessary illness and improves immunity Mental clarity and improvement of memory   Where to start Make a list of things that feel toxic in your life -do this for the different sections of your life - from food, to mental intake (i.e. tv or social media) to emotional things you take in, which would be things like people crossing your boundaries or making you feel uncomfortable, or being too much of a yes person when you need a break, or just toxic people in your life that you aren't sure about why they are around anymore. Make a list of all these things and make a pact with yourself to get rid of these things for at least a week, to 30 days.  Once you know what you would like to detox, make sure you're supported in the process, either by friends and family, or a professional. Knowing you have that support there, will make the journey a whole lot easier. Do not push yourself too hard, or cut out anything that you feel will actually make life very difficult (like all carbohydrates or sugars, for example). Remember the 80/20 rule. If 80% going in is good, you're doing pretty well. You can be as strict as you like, but don't raise your expectations of yourself too high, as this may discourage you. If you fall off the wagon, don't worry about it too much. Trying something new is difficult and it is natural to mess up a little bit along the way. Keep a journal of the process so you can look back and look at the challenges, and make note of what you learnt overall and how your life changed as a result. Cut out what doesn't work for you Food: In terms of foods, common problem areas tend to be; lactose and dairy foods, gluten, sugar, fermented grains, alcohol, corn/soy and shellfish. If you want to check which foods react negatively to your body, you can try adding the different types one by one. When cutting out milk, try an alternative such as soy, almond or rice milk. Try cutting out meat to give your body a break from digesting foods that are tougher to digest, and which stick around in your stomach for a longer time than other foods. Sugar. Fizzy drinks or anything else sugary that stimulates your body, anything that you feel that you may be hooked to, and don't want to be. Sugar will give you an energy boost for the short-term, but you can easily feel your blood sugars drop just an hour or two later, leaving your body working hard to balance out this process, as well as leaving you with a lull in energy. Eating foods that maintain your energy levels is always preferable. Obviously, avoid foods with pesticides and anything processed. For a guide on what to eat, as your body what it needs, this is often a good way of knowing what to buy and it will often know what you need instinctively. Caffeine. If you are used to a high-intake of caffeine, try reducing your intake, rather than shocking your body by going cold-turkey. If you only have one or two cups of coffee or tea a day, it may be interesting to try a replacement for it, such as an herbal tea. Jiaogulan is a good choice, as it naturally raises energy levels, without the caffeine. Emotions: Emotionally, it is not always possible to cut out those who we find aggravating. They may be our spouse or our kids! Or our boss. The point is to focus on those we do enjoy and to limit the time with those people we don't enjoy spending time with. Maybe there is a TV show you love, but you always walk away from it feeling fraught and wound up. This kind of stimulation may be enjoyable, but it might be good during a detox to let go of it for a time, just to see the results. Obviously, this may be an emotional time, and so mostly accepting moods as they come and go, will stand you in good stead. Set boundaries: Another way of making sure we're doing what we love could be as simple as making a new rule not to do what we dislike - so don't go to that thrift store with your friend who insists upon it during the detox, if that's something that you don't enjoy. If a noisy neighbor is keeping you up, now might be the time to go round for a chat or send a polite note through their door. Stand up for your happiness. Words: there are certain things that we tell ourselves that can have a huge impact upon our lives. Even if our diet is healthy and our family and friends are supportive, telling yourself certain things can still have a detrimental effect on our health. So, I encourage you to choose three words that you will not be using during the duration of the detox. This could be anything, from 'fat' to 'failure'. In terms of time, you may have certain habits that you have been holding onto that you are ready to let go of (such as watching too much TV, or browsing the internet). If there are things in your life you know would be better changed, now is a good time to try making that switch for a shorter amount of time. Trying this out could lead to positive long-term change, allowing you to do other things you will find more meaningful.
What to do for a full body detox - pro tips
Food  'You are what you eat' goes the old saying, and it's so true - what we eat literally becomes us, so this detox can help change your physical make-up. Here's how: As a general rule Eat fresh and eat the most colorful foods, with a variety of different colors. The better it tastes (providing it isn't a high-sugar snack), the better it will likely be for you, so take care to think about your food and plan a little in advance, so it is easy to make. Know your body you are probably the best person to know which foods work well with your body, and which don't. Try to take note of any foods which tend to deplete your energy levels after a few hours, or which result in a gas or bloating. Note the colour of the foods that are lacking in your diet or that give you a boost, and add more of them. Get in touch with your body deciding when it is hungry, rather than you for it. We often forget to hear our body's desire for food over our own knowledge of times to eat, and long-term habits. A detox is a chance to question this and to eat when we need it. It also allows us to notice when we are full and to hear this subtle message from the body. Plan regular meals. If it helps, plan in times to eat little and often throughout the day - six small meals can leave the body enough time to digest and eating smaller portions makes digesting an easier task. Don't overeat If you feel nearly full, this is a good time to stop eating and wait for 10 minutes before continuing. You will likely feel completely full by the time your stomach has caught up with you. Avoiding the uncomfortable feeling of overeating and giving your body just the right amount of food will feel great- and it will thank you for it. Drink more! Only drink as much as you are comfortable with (anything up to a gallon or 4 liters a day), make sure it is at room temperature, and add fruit to it, if you're wanting to add a bit of flavor. Lemon, Mint and Ginger Try drinking fresh lemon water in the mornings, making sure to use water that is purified or as PH neutral as possible. My personal favorite is a peppermint tea with a slice of frozen lemon and honey in the morning. Mint is great for the digestive system and lemon aids weight loss. Lemon and lime squeezed on top of your meals will help out your kidneys. Ginger is also an awesome thing to add to your diet as a part of a detox. As are other herbs, such as rosemary, cayenne pepper, and cinnamon. Fruit Use fruit as a snack rather than anything sugary you might usually go for. Smoothies If you haven't before, try a daily smoothie, they are like the fast-food of healthy foods. Don't buy them - make your own as then you know exactly what is going into them. Start with something simple like a mix of leafy greens, spinach or kale or watercress, mixed with ginger, bananas, apple and cucumber with water or any other juice you fancy. Yummy and an instant shot of health for when you are on the go. Choose healthy fats Avocado, olive oil, hemp seed oil etc. Avocados will do wonders for your skin and hair and are great in fruit smoothies, giving them a creamy quality. If you feel like you are retaining water, watermelon and/or cucumber will work well to help flush it out. Try A Supplement Use a body detoxifier to aid with the process of excreting toxins naturally, without worry of any side-effects.  Minerals like Zeolite can help trap toxins and remove then from the body. Eat! Make sure to eat enough food, ensuring it is healthy and fresh products that aid with healthy digestion, adaptogens that regulate body organs, and body detoxifiers that work to aid in the process of shedding any unhealthy toxins in the body. Emotions/body: Don't try too hard. This tip sounds counter-intuitive, but it's probably the most important one. Instead of trying to detox perfectly, you want to focus instead, on it being something positive you'd like to do in your life. It's a choice, and being relaxed about how and what you do on the whole body detox will mean you are coming from a more intuitive space, where you will more easily be able to hear what your body wants and needs from you. Forcing your body to quit something it needs, or giving too much up could put an unnecessary strain on the body, which is, of course, the opposite of what we're aiming for in a detox. Freshen Up Use essential oils to freshen up your home and to release any stress or tension. Lavender will reduce stress,  while Rosemary may aid your adrenals and kidneys (put 2 drops on your abdomen). Make sure to follow proper procedure with oils and dilute as necessary. Stay Active Make sure you get enough sun, and you can even try grounding or swimming in the sea as another possible way to help your body feel refreshed and revitalized. Getting outside during a detox will help ease your mind and allow you to let go of stress. Even in an urban area, finding a quiet park or getting out of the city as much as possible will leave you feeling like a different person. Consider adding in things you want to do during the free-time you will have freed up, such as any creative pursuits you feel you have missed out on, creating new and positive connections, exercise, trying out a new activity,  anything meaningful, or meditating. Sleep Decide how much sleep you want to get. 9 hours is advisable (unless you naturally sleep less, which for some people is the case). Most of us do need more time to sleep, and getting more in sync with the rising and setting of the sun, as much as possible, will help guide your body back to its natural rhythm. This also means less screen time for an hour or two before bed, to allow your body to produce that all important melatonin and to reduce unnecessary (and possibly aggravating) stimulation. For a more enjoyable approach to this, dim the lights, put on some candles, put on some relaxing music, and make bedtime an enjoyable and relaxing experience. Soak If you have a bath, use it! You can add some saltwater or essential oils to the bath so you can really enjoy its benefits. If you don't have a bath, maybe you can find somewhere to swim outdoors for a similar effect. Meditate If you haven't heard already, meditation is one way to detox your mind and to enjoy some stillness as a part of your day. Start small, 20 minutes a day will be enough to begin rewiring your brain so you feel calmer more of the time. There are different types, so try out a few and don't expect any to work after the first try- it will take at least three goes before you can feel any kind of benefit. Remember this is for you. The whole point of a detox is to feel better, while it may be a challenge, it should end with you feeling happier and more comfortable in your own skin. Have an intention in mind - everyone will want to detox for their own different reasons, bearing this in mind will help to keep you on track and motivated throughout the experience.   The take away  Detoxifying your body is a great idea and could avoid possible illness as well as bringing your body to optimum performance. It can mean you feel more positive and empowered in your life and create more space and time for you. It's important not to overdo it and to have a relaxed attitude towards your whole body detox. Making even just a few changes to your diet, your lifestyle or your thoughts will make it more likely you will continue to make similarly positive changes in your life and you might just find a different part of you, you didn't know exist. And, in our opinion, there's nothing much better than that Now go learn about how Maitake Beta Glucan can boost your immune system! Brewing Jiaogulan Tea For Your Health
Tumblr media
How To Brew Jiaogulan Tea Correctly
Jiaogulan tea has been used for centuries as a mood booster and possible life-enhancing tea. It has been claimed as a tea for longevity, and been given the nickname, 'the herb of immortality.' If you clicked on this article, you are probably already aware of the apparent benefits of drinking this wonderful concoction, and have decided to try it out. Good for you! Here is where we will let you know how to prepare Jiaogulan tea properly, so you get the most out of your tea. Tools needed to make the perfect cup of tea If you're serious about using Jiaogulan tea long-term, it's probably a good idea to buy the right tools to brew it in. Beings it is the leaf itself, fresh herbal teas do not come ready-made with their own bag, so you'll be needing the right tools in order to make your tea (don't worry, it's not as complicated as it sounds!) There are a few different ways it can be made: You could simply buy a mug that includes a diffuser within, so once it has steeped, you simply take it out, and drink. Other diffusers sit on the side of your cup, or are attached to the handle and can be taken out once it has brewed. You can use a traditional tea pot, with bonus points if it is Chinese (from where Jiaogulan originates) We recommend using a kettle made specifically for infusion, in which the tea has a ready-made diffuser and can be left to simmer for as long as necessary An alternative to this method of gentle steeping is to pick a diffuser of your choice If you're really strapped for cash, or don't intend on brewing a lot of it, you can fashion a diffuser out of tin foil with holes in the bottom. -Simply envelope the leaves in foil and pierce the bottom of the foil  a few times with the point of a knife. Making the tea as an infusion  One important thing to know when making a great cup of Jiaogulan tea is that it can be made two ways, either as an infusion, and or a decoction - the difference simply being the temperature of the water. A decoction is steeped in boiling water, whereas an infusion is left to brew instead, in hot water (not boiling). The herb is left in bubbling water in order to extract the goodness from the substance that makes a great cup of tea. Cinnamon sticks, cloves and apple cider are all created in water that is below boiling temperature, and would not be the same without this basic requirement for their production. Be careful to make sure you don't add too many leaves if you are sensitive to any kind of new substance. Everyone reacts to things differently, so make sure to pace yourself. If trying for the first time, you may have heard of the many benefits, but don't be surprised if you don't feel any different for a few days- it takes awhile for the tea to get into the system. Brewing Jiaogulan Tea Correctly  When making your tea, you will want: The water temperature to be between 140 and 212 degrees fareinheit (60-100C) To use 1 to 2t (1-2.5g) of leaves To use around 6 to 8oz of water (175-250ml) To infuse it for around 4 minutes (and no longer than 10 minutes) Instructions Begin by boiling your water. Water is a whole other issue in terms of health, and using as pure-a water as possible is recommended. You can simply buy a water filter for your tap, but this will not go as far as buying water with as PH balanced water as you can find. You can also use fresh spring water, which will be the most refreshing, but always make sure you know it is safe to drink before trying it. Once boiled (or taking if off just before the boil), make sure the temperature is correct and the water is lightly bubbling. If you don't have a thermometer, you just bring it to the boil and leave to cool for 2-3 minutes, and it should be around the right temperature. Use 1-2 teaspoons of the jiaogulan tea per cup, and leave to steep from anytime between 1 and 10 minutes. If you're using a pot, be sure to add in another to ensure a strong enough brew. How long to leave it to steep? You can, of course experiment with the length of time you leave it to steep, and adjust depending upon preference of taste. If you're not sure, we would recommend 3-4 minutes. The longer you leave it, the stronger and possibly more bitter it will taste, the shorter you leave it, the sweeter and weaker it will be. Just don't leave it for less than a minute, as then you will out on all of the goodies it has to offer! Naturally, the longer you leave it, the more of the goodness in the tea, will be extracted into the water. If you want to experiment with taste, try steeping for just one minute, saving the leaves, and steeping a second or third time for just another minute. You will experience a subtle difference, each time. If you're going to reuse any leaves, make sure you only do so for one day - don't leave them overnight and then continue to reuse them after that. Taste can also be adjusted by using natural sweeteners (we'd recommend a good-quality honey), although the tea itself is naturally sweet. Making the tea as a decoction If you would like to try brewing Jiaogulan tea as a decoction, simply used boiling water, and brew immediately in a pot. Begin by covering them for 10-15 seconds with boiling water, and then pour the water out, taking care not burn yourself. Once done, add more boiling water and leave to steep for the same amount of time as if you were infusing. Adding boiled water directly will produce an even stronger tasting tea. When to drink it  We'd recommend drinking it first thing in the morning and some time in the evening, beginning with just two cups per day at most. This will mean you remember it is time to unwind with the tea, and it also gives you a nice routine to start and end your day with. Little things like this are a great way to show yourself some love! You are best drinking it around half an hour before eating, or a few hours after eating. Starting off with a small amount of tea means you can also observe how it reacts within your body, as this tea may not be for everyone, occasionally causing mild side-effects (such as nausea or stomach troubles). Use leftover tea leaves Our top tip is to use the left over leaves from your tea as a food. You can still gain a lot of goodness from the leftover leaves themselves. They can be put into your morning smoothie, as a replacement for chia seeds or spirinula powder. Just make sure to store them in an air tight container in the fridge, if you are saving them overnight. You can also simply add them to your evening meal at the end of the day. Sun Brewing Jiaogulan Tea If you have the climate for it, you can brew this tea outside in the sun. Just make sure you have a glass bowl to put it in and leave in direct sunlight for around 2 hours. Use the same ratio as if you were brewing with a kettle or otherwise. You can drink it hot or leave it to cool inside, if you're looking for a refreshing summer drink. Other uses for Jiaogulan Use dried Jiaogulan in baking Who would have thought it? This tea can also be used in baking! Just as black tea often is put in cakes, jaiogulan can also be added to sweet things, such as cakes, cookies, muffins and even granola bars. Simply whiz up the dried leaves in your blender and add them to your favorite recipes for a nutritional boost. Spice up your liquor cabinet You can create a mix - 1 part Jiaogulan, 5 parts vodka, which will produce a heady brew. To make, put both in an air tight jar and store in a cool dark place (a cupboard or larder) for 30 days. Each day you will want to stir the ingredients. Small bubbles on the surface are a good sign, and show that the saponins - a beneficial ingredient of the plant have been drawn out and into the mixture. Once the 30 days are up, put it through a colander to make sure all leaves are collected, and voila! You have your own unique brew to share with your friends, with extra healthy properties. Although, don't overdo it! Just 1-3 tablespoons daily will keep you going for years (providing you keep it cool and in a dark space). For a different taste, you can also try this technique with apple cider, if that's your preference. The take away Jiaogulan tea is a sensitive herb that, with good care, will leave you feeling uplifted and your taste buds satisfied. Taking a little thought about how to brew it turns tea making into an art form, and will always give you a little lift, in knowing that the small moments in the day where you take the time to make yourself a cup of this revitalizing liquid, are just for you. There is a reason this care matters, and it is because, as they say, you are what you eat. Taking a moment to care for your brewing Jaiogulan tea, is a moment spent caring for yourself. And that truly is, priceless. Looking for a powerful antioxidant with other health benefits?  Why not give Tumeric & Curcumin a try! What Is CBD Hemp Oil And It's Benefits?
Tumblr media
What is CBD Hemp Oil?
CBD stands for Cannabidiol, and is one of the 66 compounds that make up the cannabis plant, Cannabis Sativa. It is believed to be beneficial to overall health and to aid those with anxiety or depression. When extracted and consumed,  CBD Hemp Oil is reported to often leave people feeling more relaxed and even relieved of pain. Is it legal? It is important to note that THC (tetrahydrocannabidiol), the component that leads to psychotic experiences, i.e. the high often associated with cannabis, is barely present in CBD oil. This makes it a great alternative if you're wanting to reduce pain and relieve anxiety, without altering your state of mind. While Marijuana is legal in 30 American states for medical or recreational use, it is not available in others. This, however, does not apply to CBD hemp oil. Providing it is derived from industrial hemp and it contains less than .03% THC, it is legal. Precautions While it is impossible to overdose on this substance, taking a large amount is not reccommended; and like all good things, a little amount often goes a long way. Take your doctor's advice in terms of dosage and don't go over his/her advice. Be sure to make sure you know the ingredients of any product before buying, and talk to your doctor before taking, especially if you are already taking other medication. CBD may clash with certain substances. As it has not been widely researched on children, it is therefore not recommended for them, nor for use while pregnant or breastfeeding. How to take it CBD is usually mixed with some kind of oil - like hemp seed or olive oil and so can be taken orally, using a pipet. Dropping a small amount underneath your tongue, you then hold it there for around 30 seconds, and then swallow. It can also be used in creams, which can be directly applied to the skin of the affected area. Side-effects Along with having many reported benefits, there may also be some side-effects. These are: Tiredness Diahhrea Nausea or vomiting Dry mouth Dizziness Changes in appetite Weight gain or loss All side-effects are possible, but are rare. Naturally, if you try CBD oil and find you don't feel any positive effects or find it is not useful to you, then it is a good idea to stop using it and try something else. The Benefits There are many believed benefits of CBD hemp oil, for a number of different ailments or problems: Reduces Anxiety and Depression In this stressful world, many people are feeling the need for more support and relaxation. Both can be debilitating and dramatically affect our lives. One small study found that those who took CBD before a speech had dramatically reduced levels of anxiety and cognitive difficulties, compared to the placebo group. It has also successfully been used to treat children with PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and insomnia. There is less proof of its anti-depressant qualities as only animal studies have been carried out so far, and it has yet to be tested on humans. However, it is essentially believed to aid the production of serotonin in the brain, which helps with mood regulation and is known as the 'happy chemical'. Epilepsy Two rare forms of epilepsy (Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome) have been treated during three studies of patients using cannabidiol - which was found to be as effective as using regular treatments, but with less side-effects. Seizures were reduced by 37% when taking Epidiolex (the CBD medication for epilespy). Epidiolex is now being recommended by the U.S Food and Drug administration for use in the United States. Another study of 214 patients suffering severe epilepsy, found their seizures reduced by 36.5% when taking small doses of CBD. They did also, unfortunately, experience some side effects. Multiple Sclerosis Multiple sclerosis is an auto-immune disease which effects the entire body and the brain. Muscle spasms are one of the main challenges when dealing with this disease. CBD is believed to act upon the brains endocannabinoid system in such a way that it aids those with neurological disorders, like MS. For those who have multiple sclerosis, a spray called Sativex has been found to be a positive and safe way of reducing symptoms. In a study of 276 patients, it was found that the spray reduced spasms by a huge 75%. It was also found to generally reduce symptoms, as well as improving their general ability to perform everyday tasks. Heart Health Having high-blood pressure can lead to a stroke, a heart attack,  or other complications in the body. CBD appears to be a natural way of reducing high blood pressure. In one study a group of ten men given CBD oil and found to have reduced blood pressure. Furthermore, they were put in a normally stressful situation and were still found to have lower blood pressure, following exposure to CBD oil. The reduction of stress produced through taking this substance could also have beneficial affects in terms of heart health. Chronic Pain A report in the Journal of Experimental medicine found that CBD can reduce pain and inflammation for those suffering from chronic or long-term pain. There it is stated that non-psychoactive substances like CBD have also shown to reduce pain when tested on animals. Arthritis Pain Cannabinoid receptors and canabinoids are potential targets for the reduction of pain and inflammation in those suffering Arthritis related pain. Researchers for the European Journal of Pain also found that in animal studies, rats were found to have a significant reduction of pain in symptoms of arthritis. However, more studies are needed to confirm this is human recipients. Researchers found that a tolerance does not occur, so doses are not needed to be increased when used as treatment (unlike certain other pain medications). Alzheimer's Disease Alzheimer's disease is a common neurological disease that occurs during the aging process. It involves an inflammation of neural tissues, eventually leading to a deterioration of neural tissues. Which means people will begin to lose their memory, lose cognition and may have a change in personality. Cannabidiol could serve as a way of reducing the inflammation and slow down this process, meaning any deterioration could be abated for some time. It has also been found to be neuro-protective and to prevent hippocampal and cortical neurodegeneration (Hamelink et Al.) While more studies are needed to conclude concretely the effects of CBD in terms of treating patients with Alzheimer's, current studies show that it is safe and, in principle, shows positive therapeutic benefits. Anti-cancer Properties CBD has even been found to possibly have anti-cancerous properties, reducing the growth of breast cancer in mice, as well as inducing cell-death of cancer in test-tube cancer cells. It cannot be claimed a cure to cancer, however it appears to be competent in the easing of patients' suffering whilst they are foregoing chemotherapy treatments. Nausea and vomiting are some of the rather unpleasant side-effects of chemotherapy, and taking cannabidiol alongside treatments appears to ease these symptoms. It may also help with cancer-related pain in patients, as a study by Johnson Jr et al. found that those treated with both THC and CBD experienced a significant reduction in the amount of pain experience, compared to placebo. Acne Acne occurs when pores are clogged with excess oil, bacteria or dead skin cells. The problem can then be made worse because of varying hormone levels, medication, diet or stress. Studies carried out on animals have found CBD to reduce the production of sebum - a mixture of lipids that when over-produced results in bouts of acne. Acne is also considered an inflammatory disease where pores become red and inflamed. CBD's anti-inflammatory properties therefore work well to treat it. For acne, it can be taken either as a topical cream or in pill form. Other Possible Uses CBD Hemp Oil can also be used to help: Stress Drug withdrawal symptoms Anti-psychotic aid (helping with mental disorders such as schizophrenia) Diabetes (Type 1)
The Take Away
CBD has been shown to help many people with different ailments improve their lives through its use. CBD hemp oil has the potential to help people with many different ailments. It is important to bear in mind that this is a holistic medicine and as such has not been a proven cure. Like all herbs, it may work for some and not for others. It is not a substitute for any medical treatment, but may well be a good accompaniment, especially for those who are feeling stressed or agitated. It is possible to reduce anxiety or depression, alleviate cancer-related symptoms, relieve the pain of those suffering long-term health problems, and even promotes heart health. In conclusion, CBD hemp oil is a nifty little substance that is helping a lot of people. However, hemp oil is not the cure for all ailments, but as a holistic supplement, it may well be of use to anyone struggling with any of these issues, or to someone who simply wants to try it out and see if they feel a little more chilled out. After all, reduced stress and more happiness can never be bad, right?! Looking for something different to try?  Why not Learn About Jiaogulan Tea And It's Benefits! Spices play an important role in making your food taste delicious and flavorful. But, did you know that spices also offer some impressive health benefits? Turmeric is a spice that has been used in Asian and Indian cooking for centuries. It’s also been a staple in ancient Ayurvedic medicine and is known for its anti-anti-inflammatory properties and healing benefits. From helping reduce the pain of headaches or minimizing the effects of gastrointestinal disorders, Turmeric can be a powerful tool in managing certain health issues. But, like all natural supplements or ingredients, Turmeric should not be used in place of medications or used to diagnose a disease. Instead, look to incorporate Turmeric into your diet for its natural health benefits as a supplement to traditional medical treatment. And don’t forget to discuss adding it into your diet with your doctor to ensure there are no issues with medications or supplements you are already taking. What is Turmeric? Turmeric is a plant that is a part of the ginger family. When dried, ground, or cut into, the plant has a golden hue. This is one of Turmeric’s trademarks. So, using Turmeric in your food may not be the best way to get Curcumin into your diet. Studies have shown that concentrated versions of the antioxidant, like supplements, may be the best way to make sure you’re getting the best health benefits from Curcumin and Turmeric. But, if you’re on blood pressure medication, you may need to avoid these in certain foods or avoid taking them. For a unique preparation, try making Golden Milk by adding Turmeric to dairy based or non-dairy based milks. The options to add Turmeric into foods and drinks are endless. So, let your food creativity run wild. Use Fresh Turmeric Chopped or Grated in Dishes Like ginger, Turmeric can actually be grated or finely diced and used as a seasoning in dishes like salads and stir-frys. This makes for a unique way to add it to dishes. One word of caution. Don’t forget that Turmeric is a natural dye. So, be sure to wash your hands and cutting surfaces well after dicing or grating. Use as a Tea Like Golden Milk, Turmeric can be added to a variety of beverages. One of the most common is tea. Turmeric has a peppery taste to it. So, it works well in blends that contain other spices that compliment it like pepper, clove, and ginger. In addition to making your own tea blend, you can also buy Turmeric tea bags at your local health food store. Tumeric Tea, like other teas such Jiaogulan Tea, are often used in Asian cultures for their potential health benefits. Take as a Supplement As we’ve learned, the amount of Curcumin found in Turmeric is not typically thought of as a strong enough amount to be considered beneficial for overall health and wellness. That’s partially because Curcumin is not easily digested by the body. In place of adding the spice and plant into a diet, you can also take Curcumin as a supplement. But, do be sure to research the kind of supplement you buy. That’s because research has shown that most commercial Curcumin supplements are not actually as effective as they could be. So, be sure to look for a variety of Turmeric and Curcumin supplement options before adding them to your diet. Don’t forget to discuss taking these supplements with your physician too before you begin taking them.

By doing a bit of research and discussing it with your physician, you may find that Turmeric and Curcumin can be helpful in adding to your diet. As, we’ve learned Turmeric is a versatile plant that is not only a popular cooking staple but can provide a variety of health benefits to anyone who uses it.
