Rough translation:
It's Blue Exorcist's 15th anniversary! (Hhhhgh that's long enough for a little kid to be a real adult now...)
Thank you so much for all your loving support throughout the years! The comic is...sorry...STILL going to continue for a bit longer, so I hope you'll continue to stick around!

Huh! Odd! I feel like sharing the word 外道 again today! How completely random and unprompted of me!
Japanese vocab: 外道
Here’s a neat word:
外道(げどう/gedou)
It’s written 外 (outside) and 道 (path, way) and it was originally a word for anyone who didn’t follow Buddhist teachings (i.e. they were “off the path” of Buddhism).
Time does things to words, though, and now it’s commonly used as an insult for someone who has no morals/is evil/does unethical things. Kind of like calling someone a monster in English.
Why did I feel like sharing the word gedou today?
Tumblr media
no reason

so THAT wasn't any less painful with animation and voice acting eh guys?
I deal with pain by explaining grammar, okay?
(post under the cut for Blue Exorcist spoilers from chapter 60)
(and for lengthy rambling about the sentence ending んだ)

guys my whole worldview is shaken
for FIFTEEN YEARS I have earnestly believed--with good reason!--that Okamoto Nobuhiko was the screamiest member of the Blue Exorcist cast
and now you're telling me it was Kitazawa Eiri ALL ALONG??

Now there was a lot of like, flashy plot and character development and horror elements and emotions in the new episode of blue exorcist
BUT WE MUSTN'T LET ALL THAT SUBSTANCE DISTRACT US FROM WHAT'S REALLY IMPORTANT:

HEY GUESS WHAT
NONE OF THIS IS MANGA SPOILERS AS OF TODAY
Come enjoy some extreme season 3 ep 4 spoilers instead!
Reading practice: Blue Exorcist 49 (for every level)
On the theory that emotional stuff is easier to remember, here’s a variety of Japanese sentences from an emotional chapter of the Blue Exorcist manga, arranged (roughly) from easy to hard with vocab/grammar notes!
But because this emotional chapter is in Volume 12 of the manga (and was not included in the anime either), it contains
***EXTREME BLUE EXORCIST MANGA SPOILERS***
If you have not read Blue Exorcist Chapter 49 (Volume 12) and ever plan to, I recommend doing something different for Japanese practice today. Don’t worry, I will make more of these things for earlier chapters at some point.
If you have read Chapter 49 and want to practice Japanese with it, read on! No prior Japanese experience required for the first (and possibly second) example.

What I love about Japanese
Sometimes it’s frustrating. I’m learning it because I love anime and want to be able to engage with the culture, but all the shounen I-belive-in-my-friends inspiration can’t help you when you’re faced with a list of 1000 kanji to learn before you’re at the reading level of a five-year-old. Sometimes I wish I’d picked a language with a writing system that made sense.
But then once in a while something comes along that makes it all worth it.
Now this. This is the kanji for ability.
Tumblr media
It’s a nice enough kanji, has some radicals of its own but isn’t too full of itself. Learning all about it isn’t too important, what you need to know is that this is the character for ability.
Now.
This.
Tumblr media
This here is the kanji for bear. As in the animal, not the verb.
That’s right. According to the Japanese language, a bear is ability

NOW WITH VOICE ACTING
Japanese vocab: 偉い(えらい) and えらそう
I was reading some Blue Exorcist and realized the page I was on might make a good little Japanese lesson, so I’m gonna share the word 偉い (great, powerful) in an overly detailed post! I’m using a short example conversation from chapter 39 (in volume 10) of the Blue Exorcist manga, but it’s not especially spoilery if you haven’t read that far.

Hey guess what's not spoilers anymore if you've only seen the anime!
Mephisto's name spelled in kanji, that's what!
Blue Exorcist fans.
Have I ever told you that Volume 12 lists a kanji version of Mephisto’s name and it’s like my favorite thing ever?
(spoilered for length…and actual spoilers if you’ve only seen the anime)

Mephisto.

We need to talk about your yukata patterns.
Tumblr media
Because that just says moe.

Over and over, presumably in shades of pink.
And we need to talk about your popsicle choices.
Tumblr media
I didn’t need to know that corn popsicles are a real thing, Mephisto.
