♛ Headcanon: The Harp
PARTICLES OF DUST AND THE MUSK OF AGED WOOD were among Bede’s earliest realities (and frequent assailants to his lungs) following his decision to accept the responsibilities of becoming Opal’s successor. The duties of a gym leader are many, he’d so been informed during the months of the experience that was fairy bootcamp--naturally such included the care and upkeep of the gym itself. The main lobby, as it stood, wasn’t terribly in need of maintenance, but the storage rooms, which in fact challengers had to pass through to reach the arena?
By Arceus. Dreadful. Utterly.
And perhaps understandably given Opal’s age (Powers above help those who dared to mention that aloud--Bede does not fear many things but his guardian had become an exception) and the gym’s other primary focus of putting on shows. It became his issue when becoming the new gym leader; the status of the gym was going to reflect on his character. Thus he made it his objective to bring cleanliness and some sense of order to the space.
Hours divided over days spent doing a variety of physical labor left him sore, coughing in fits, drenched in sweat--the absolute worst combination. He’d never appreciated a shower more at the end of it all. Yet, truthfully it wasn’t a completely nightmarish experience--he’d found himself...fascinated enough by the various objects he’d unearthed in his tidying expedition. Props from plays of the past no doubt. Masquerade masks (he’d been semi-tempted to one try on if not for his mind reminding him of how in need of cleaning everything in that room was) impressively painted backdrops, and costumes no doubt inspired by different time periods.
(Unsurprisingly one outfit that seemed fitting of royalty caught his eye.)
But even these findings paled in comparison to what Bede recognized to be a dust covered...harp? A faint golden color--perhaps brilliantly gleaming in days past and seeming in moderately good condition. It looked beautiful and as amethysts lay fixed upon the instrument for several moments, the blond wondered what lovely sound it would make.
It was Opal who happened upon him in that moment--her checking up on him was commonplace, something of warmth on her features as blues landed upon the object he’d apparently been transfixed by. The instrument belonged to her mother, he’d learned; Opal herself never brought herself to learn to play, but one of her gym trainers was skilled and from time to time would delight Ballonlea in the sound of it--though it had been so busy over the last few months there’d been little time for that.
He couldn’t help remarking what a shame it was that a lovely instrument would see such a state.
The simple comment leading to the woman beside him getting a knowing look--smile pulling at her lips.
“Would you like to learn to play?”
Bede had never touched an instrument in his life--only admired the sounds of them, particularly those of the more classical families. In his younger years, on rare flights of fancy he’d imagined himself learning to play something like a violin--the piano perhaps, putting on elaborate shows. But such thoughts had only been just that--a fantasy. To have the actual opportunity now to learn to play something and make music himself was...unexpected.
(And how much more unique he would be to play such a graceful instrument.)
“I ...suppose I wouldn’t mind.”
Opal negotiated arrangements with one of her trainers--Miss Annette, to teach him weekly and the other woman seemed genuinely excited to impart the skill upon him. And like other aspects of his life, Bede approached the opportunity seriously and prepared to give all of his effort into exceeding the expectations of his teacher flawlessly.
Currently, he has made great progress (and had many days of sore fingers) and if one is lucky they may hear delicate music around the forested town of Ballonlea.

♛ Headcanon: On Hop
HEAVY IS THE INEVITABLE SIGH THAT WILL SLIP FROM THE GYM LEADER’S LIPS at the mention of the Champion’s--rather, former Champion’s younger sibling and newly crowned Champion’s apparent “buddy”. History shared between the both of them by no means pleasant--instead entirely something of a bitter rivalry (at least, at the time of his gym challenge, Bede perceived it as such)...and he’s willing to acknowledge that much of what’s conspired between them had been his doing.
His cutting words after Hop’s merciless defeat in the Wild Area hadn’t weighed on his conscious in the slightest at the time--the moment had given Bede a much needed morale boost, something to assure him of his status as one of the true elite competitors in the gym challenge. To prove he was better than one of the the two challengers that had the highest chances among the eyes of the public, within Rose’s eyes, had been a wonderful victory. (After all, Bede had been foreign to loss, prior to his gym challenge.)
And that isn’t to speak of Bede’s envy. The other source of his bitterness toward the other boy. His life has been nothing but fighting--of pushing himself to overcome the ever looming threat of being nothing...and the audacity of Hop, someone who has everything Bede’s wanted (a family, support, love, stability) to so boldly declare of how the title was going to be his. As if he were entitled to it. Taking him down a notch was more satisfying than it should have been.
(But little does he know, there is so much more to Hop beneath the surface.)
Now months have passed with both of them in new positions and Bede having...mellowed from Opal’s influence (though he will avoid confirming such). By no means are they friends. Nothing perhaps anything beyond cordial, though Bede cannot bite back his own snark nor suppress his attitude all the time. Yet, Bede DOES in fact respect Hop’s strength, seeing some form of growth in his battling at the finals. And there is of course the matter of Hop standing by the current Champion’s side and stopping the Darkest Day...the mess that he himself contributed to help causing.
The question remains of whether Bede regrets his actions towards the other in the past. It’s complicated--perhaps if he were to know him beyond an associate to the reigning Champion. But as of now, the thought is not in his mind.
...suffice to say Bede will not go out of his way to be around the other, but neither will he degrade Hop’s strength if asked.
He will, however, not hesitate to voice his irritation at the other’s noisiness.
