I was raised by a Jazz dad. (... and an amazing mum and I am indescribably thankful for her. But musically she is... not that passionate.)

One of my musical memory that I cherish is, that the smell of my dad’s car - a mix of manly cologne and leather seat - with Bill Evans or Boyz Ⅱ Men or EW&F playing. I used to fall asleep in the car lying down in the back seat, gazing the stars that I can see from the roof window, going back home after eating out.

So as a 90′s kids, I naturally grew up liking R&B, Jazz, Hiphop, Classic - still to this day. The first CD that I bought was “Holst: The Planets.” (Yes, I was a snobby child with very old soul thank you. ) I used to learn piano - I did enjoy playing the songs that I like, but used to hate practicing :P

Anyways. In the middle school, there was a time that I tried to fit in - I tried to like something that everyone liked, that everyone talked about during the break time - (male) idols.

I tried to like them, but I couldn’t.

I understood that their visuals are stunning. They have this occupations called “idol” - a part of their job is to look good of course.

But I couldn’t like their music. As I leant about those boy groups, I saw some patterns in their music - Happy-go-lucky, bright, love, pop, smiles, etc.... they were all positive. That’s surely not bad. They were good. Catchy. Lots of other people like them. They are popular. They can dance. They can do flips. They, and their music, are meant to be so.

I was and am still not a music expert but just a mere music lover. I understand that the art is subjective, and I would like to think I have a great deal of appreciation for ANY kind of arts that have been, and is created by ANYBODY, no matter what people say to them. I just respect the fact that it requires talent, passion, sacrifices, struggles... it just takes lots of things to CREATE something. So I respect their music as well. Yea they are cool. But I simply preferred other types of music more. I grew up thinking that I would probably not listen to “idols”. I grew up thinking that I would probably not understand what’s good about “idols”.

Fast forward, autumn in 2019. Youtube algorithm somehow decided to recommend me to watch “Baby don’t like it” by NCT127. The rest is history - it was an eye-opening experience for me to learn that I really appreciate their music even though I don’t completely understand Korean. (That’s the beauty of music though - you can fall in love with songs through melody that resonates with your emotion and feelings. Also beauty of Hiphop (partially) - you can understand rhyme & flow without understanding the language. ) (Though, later I came to know that “Baby don’t like it” is categorized as a “T*ot bops” among the fans - that type of feeling resonated me at the time huh ok lol) Finding little playful sounds or antics, beautiful harmonies, experimental beats, and the colours of each and every one of their voices has been my pleasure. (Their vocal abilities are so luxurious by the way... each one of 10 (21) men can afford to sound this good both in studio and live, while all of them being good looking. Oh and also perform/dance/sometimes choreograph like professional dancers who actually live off it. I call this God’s favoritism.) Learning their stories, their fandoms, system of K-pop industry and its social impact (both negative and positive things happens/ed within them) have been really educationally valuable to me. And here I am happily trapped in the ‘dream’ - the NCT universe where they are trying to tell us their story through their music and concepts. As an English literature grad, nothing is more exciting reading the lines and reading between the lines. (Layers man, LAYERS. )

To my 13/14 years old self - you will be proven wrong for giving up on “idol” music. You will, this time, can genuinely love “idol” music without lying to your friends and yourself that you like it. You can love their music, because they are not just idols - they are “artists”. Thank you NCT for breaking my prejudice for “boy groups”. Also thank you Youtube algorithm, although sometimes you are frickin weird.

私は、ジャズが大好きな父に育てられました。 (... もちろん素晴らしい母もちゃんといますし感謝してます。ただ母は音楽的にはあまり関心がある方ではないので。)

音楽が関わる幸せな思い出で忘れられないのが、父の車の中の記憶です。家族３人で外食をした帰り道、父の香水と車の革のシートの混ざった匂いの中で、後部座席に寝転がり、屋根の窓から星をぼうっと眺めつつ、ビル・エヴァンスやボーイズⅡメン、EW&Fを聴きつつ、眠りに落ちるというそんな記憶があります。

90年代生まれの子供としてこんな音楽環境で育った私は、自然とR&B、ジャズ、ヒップホップ、クラシック - そういった音楽を好み、そういった音楽に育てられて来ました。小学生の時最初に買ったCDは、ホルストの惑星組曲。 (体は子供、好みは初老) (初老の方々に失礼でした、すみません。) ピアノも習っていましたが、練習は嫌いで好きな曲ばかり弾いているというような子供でした。

とにかく。私は中学で、皆と話ができるように、馴染めるように、仲間外れにならないように、皆の話題になっているものを好きになろうとした事があります。それは(男性)アイドルグループでした。好きになろうとしたものの好きになれず。彼らのビジュアル、見た目が素晴らしいのは理解できました。職業「アイドル」なのですから、当たり前ですよね。でも肝心の音楽がどうしても好きになれませんでした。

こうしたアイドルグループの音楽には、パターンがありました。ハッピーで明るく、時にはかっこよく、恋や愛を歌い、ポップで… 全てポジティブな事なんですけど。良い事なんですけど。キャッチーで。沢山の人が熱狂しているし。人気だし。踊れるし。バク転もできるし。彼らと彼らの音楽は、そういう風に作られているのだから。その当時も、現在も、私は音楽の専門家ではありません。美と同様、芸術は主観的なものですから、どのような人が創造したどのようなアートでも、リスペクトの念はあるんです。芸術作品の創造には、才能や情熱、犠牲、苦しみ、沢山のものが必要だと理解しているからです。だから、「アイドル」の曲でも、嫌いだとか批判する気は無くて。これも芸術の１つの形だ、と思っていました。

ただ私は、他のジャンルやアーティストをより好んでいました。だからその時、「アイドル」の曲はもう聞かないだろうなと思いました。そして、「アイドル」の良さも、私に理解できる事はないだろうなと思いました。

時は経ち、2019年の秋。 Youtubeのアルゴリズムが、私にある曲をリコメンドしてきました。それはNCT127の「Baby don’t like it」でした。その後、彼らの曲を洗いざらい聞いてみるのに時間はかからず。韓国語はほぼわからなくとも、彼らの音楽の良さを知るのに障害にはなりませんでした。ジェイコブ・コリアーも言っていましたが、それが音楽の真骨頂なんだと思います。メロディーは感情を表現し、共感を与えることができる。彼らの全ての曲がヒップホップという訳ではないのですが、ヒップホップ(もしくはラップ)の美しさは言語を超えた共感を引き出せる所にもあるはずです。リリックは非常に重要ですが、ライムやフローは言語がわからずともその存在を確認することはできます。 (ただ、「Baby don’t like it」の歌詞を見たり、ファンの方々(英語圏)の認識ではこの曲はエロい曲！という事を後に理解しました。笑それに動かされた私の心な。) 彼らのトラックに散りばめられたいたずら心のある音や、極上のハーモニーや、前衛的なビートや、彼ら一人一人の声の色を知っていくのは本当に面白かったです。 (合法性を疑うほど贅沢なチームですよね。もれなく10(21)人全員が、スタジオでもライブでも歌えて、もれなくハンサムで。おまけにダンスもそれだけで食べていけるようなクオリティで。神が一人につき三物以上与えた天使集団、それがNCT...)

それと同時に、彼らのこれまでの道のりや苦労、ファンダムやKポップ界の慣習、システムや社会的なインパクトなど(悪い面も、良い面も)を知っていくのは、本当に貴重な学びだったと思います。

今では、NCTが私たちに提示している夢に囚われた気分です。 NCTが我々に提示している並行世界の中で語られるストーリーにワクワクしながら。一応文学部卒ですし職業もそれ関係なのですが、物語を読むのも行間を読むのも大好物なんです。なんなら、24時間で書き上げクオリティがオランダの海抜よりも低いと言われる黒歴史卒論(40ページ英文)も物語の映像表現についてですし… (伏線のミルフィーユやぁ〜〜) (誰も見てない所でスベるのやめよう) 13歳くらいの私に言ってあげたいです。アイドル音楽を理解するのを諦めた事を、撤回される日が来るからね。他の人と同じ物が好きになれなくて、浮く事が怖かった時代をもぶち壊してくれるようなアイドルが現れます。あなたが出会う「アイドル」は、ただのアイドルじゃなく、「アーティスト」です。

NCTの皆さん、私の「アイドル」への偏見を粉々にしてくれて有難うございます。たまに謎なビデオがおすすめに出てくるけど、あの日のYoutubeアルゴリズムにも有難う。
