Happy-sad to announce that this clutch of green cheek conures have successfully self-weaned, and are now feeding themselves pellets (Tropimix pellets for cockatiels, conures, and lovebirds.) The oldest two have also learned to fly and land like pros. The youngest is learning to not fall like a rock while landing 😂❤️ All three are now in individual weaning crates so I can monitor their food and water intake (extremely important to keep an eye on this during the weaning phase for all animals and birds.) Parrot folks who've kept zebra finches: Do finches accept the types of nesting boxes in the pictures below, or do I necessarily have to use a matki? The advantage to me of the boxes in the pictures is that they're hung outside crates and aviaries, so it is easier to check what's going on inside without disturbing birds. Easier to clean too. Also, they allow better airflow than a matki, which is better for birds too. I use large-sized versions of these for all my other breeding pairs (ringnecks, cockatiels, budgies, and lovebirds.) All three babies have been successfully banded: Girls on the left leg, boy on the right. Green cheek conures are sexually monomorphic (no visible differences between the sexes), but this set is special: While both parents are visually regular GCC (no visible mutations), the father is 'split' to something (we'll know what exactly once all three babies get their feathers; rest explained earlier up-thread. 🙂) So it is fairly safe to assume that the baby with the black beak and feet is a boy (he's either 'split' like his father, or 'normal'), and the babies with the pink beaks and feet are girls.
