I have to work on the formal layout at some point in the next day or so, but here’s another warning that I am moving to @sfaradi.

God made the cage before he trapped her inside of it. Punished her for finding the key. Always planned on her finding the key. There was no other way forward. Now God wants to talk to me about forgiveness, but God is the one who needs to be forgiven.

it’s not done yet, but if you want to follow my new blog whilst i’m working on it and cleaning house, it’s gonna be at @sfaradi.
that way i get a good idea of who wants to continue engaging with me. but i’m still gonna be here for a lil while longer, at least through the weekend. ;p

i’ve just been thinking about vampire spawn!salome on and off today, i don’t know why.
but in the process, i’ve realized that she is likely terrifying looking, if i’m honest. salome’s much darker than astarion, so what’s simply pale for him is instead a blue-grey whole body pallor for her. mix that with a strong tendency to wear white, stark black hair down well past her hips, and a set of coquelicot red eyes.
she definitely looks like a dybbuk possessed corpse, just slightly.

I have been in such a mood to write and drop a ton of Salome-related meta for the last twelve odd hours, and the universe keeps cockblocking me.
#1) My toilet has been patently broken since late November, and management attempted to halfassedly fix it in December (and then realized it probably requires taking my entire toilet off at the base and replacing it, which the repairman did not want to do.) So around midnight last night, my toilet overflowed egregiously while I was busy watching a video about Al Capone’a soup kitchen.
After ripping out the innards of my bowel-relieving porcelain monster, water spraying like I had just violently disemboweled it, I hastily turned off all the water in my bathroom.
#2) Cue me cleaning my entire house in a panic because inevitably this is going to result in someone coming in my house. I live like Astarion, aka do not look past the surface or you will begin to see the depression, so on went my goat apron and scrubbing. So much scrubbing. But it’s okay, my house is clean?¿
#3) my house is no longer clean because i, in fact, did not turn my water off; i turned it on turbo blast and my toilet not only flooded the bathroom but the entire fucking hallway at 10:30 this morning. i’m sorry downstairs neighbor. THE WATER IS OFF NOW I HOPE
I have called management, and I pray that they send help. Please do the job you were supposed to do back in December, and correctly, before I die of Cholera. Please.
#4) I have a food shelf appointment in a half hour. Pray for me. With the rate things are going, something seems likely to explode and flood. oh no it’s also raining and i left my windows open

I’ve been fighting the urge to remake for the better half of a month, but it really kicked up after last week and the death in the family. Do I stay and keep building on what I have here, or do I remake and keep a smaller/private-leaning and more organized dash w/ my partners and fav aesthetic blogs?

I’ve spent the last few days contemplating the nature of and — ultimately — the different progression Salome’s disability takes.
In a medieval context, relying on the terms set by fantasy, class is inevitably tied to medical access. Higher the station, the better the healers and medicine you have at your disposal. A buffer of familial or romantic love and loyalty that may keep Galtonian ethics and the underclasses from ever gracing your door.
Salome rejected high station and access, in most situations. And while she may regain it and then some in some verses (becoming a daughter-in-law to The Lord of the Eighth for example, has to confer some benefit), in most instances she actively chooses to remain in and defined, in part, by the underclass it places her in.
While I could choose to dive in anywhere on this topic, I think one of the most important areas to dedicate time to, is the timespan I have spent with her was a character. This version of Salome is not her original, or her main version of herself, but they have all been disabled in some way. In 2011-12, it was rare to find a character who was disabled, let alone so openly. And it was even rarer to have that disability drastically impact the character, their interactions, and their world. Salome’s disabilities have always been linear and progressive; as time advances in the real world, so does her age and the ongoing problems she experiences with her body’s limitations.
Now, in 2024, I feel that the writing characters with certain kinds of disabilities is more commonplace because people find there is an aesthetic to doing so. Amputation is a particularly common affliction, for example, but it is rarely touched on how horrifically painful and unaesthetic it actually is. The brutal chaffing, the failure of prosthetics themselves, revision surgeries, phantom pain, an inability to do much of what you previously could, and so much else is often ignored just solely for the visual of disability.
This can get frustrating because what representation you think you’re getting, you’re not.
When I write Salome in her modern, main!verse, she has been viciously disabled by her severe scoliosis and the revision surgeries she’s had to endure. She is a creature who finds her safety in the vulnerable and dark, because it is where her body has kept her as a physical prison.
Putting her in a high fantasy universe where I couldn’t utilize that same outcome was interesting, and it challenged me to rewrite her backstory with a similar outcome through different narratives. And how to bridge her through to the underclass of disability, the prejudices surrounding it, and bring her back around to, philosophically, a similar reasoning point. To allow this little beast of mine to live a life so cracked open and oozing forth all of its highs and lows from just one singular thing.
— you might be asking yourself, I thought you were going to talk about outcomes? I am, I am! But it’s hard to talk about those without acknowledging how we got here to begin with.
All of this, all of those peaks and valleys, stem a single day’s events. A year and a half of grabbing a makeshift trapeze bar above her bed on a bloody fucking floor and dragging herself upward. The sheer tenacity and gritting of teeth to fight against almost complete paralysis. The baby steps, falls, bruises, and frustrated cries. All because Salome didn’t have the luxury of a healer provided to someone of high birth. She had to heal the hard way.
The inevitable progression of her disability — her need for her bracing and natural herbal pain remedies — feels so dramatically different across her sub-verses. Whether or not any of it pans are debates for other days, but I can’t help but feel that in her disability is treated more like a minor, and likely mostly treatable, nuisance when in the company of @catturnalia’s Raphael.
It’s a tinkerer’s dream, in others.
And in most, Salome still remains in the underclass, hammering out the old brace, trying to get as much use as possible out of a dying piece of leather and steel. Hidden behind skirts, boots, and other methods in order to not draw any more attention to herself than required. The pain slowly getting worse, year by year.
