ㅤbuildings fall to ruin, one by one. tiled floors crack and give way, wallpapers peeling like stripped skin. the once bustling tourist town's been abandoned for some time now, with only foolhardy teenagers daring to enter its desolate streets and looming, decrepit architecture.

ㅤit wasn't her first choice in assignments, but at least it came with some decent, if not slightly somber, nostalgia. years ago, she used to come here with her parents to visit the shops and spend an afternoon at the amusement park, enjoy the luxuries that an even smaller town like brahms couldn't offer. it almost hurts to see such a beloved place become a ghost town.

ㅤpatrolling the foggy, ash - covered streets is simultaneously relaxing and unnerving, the dead silence and sense of complete isolation sinking deep into the very marrow of her bones. her precinct had lost contact with the town's police, and now, here she was, entrusted with the task of finding out why.

ㅤat least, that's what she'd been counting on. after a fateful encounter with a man named harry, she'd devoted herself to helping him find his missing daughter. her memories afterwards are... fuzzy. they'd gotten separated, and then — what? she hadn't been able to find him anywhere. what she did find was a young woman, a few years younger than herself, hopelessly lost. they'd barely exchanged names before the town began to warp around them, forcing them to take shelter from the monsters permeating the fog within one of the old buildings, its rusted, dilapidated interior barely illuminated by the flickering lights above.

ㅤthat's an understatement if cybil ever heard one. still, she nods and offers a reassuring smile that more closely resembles a grimace. " you can say that again, " she mutters good-naturedly, brushing the dust and grime from the door handle off her gloves. another person to help. another person to save. " i don't even know where to start. just... don't think i'm crazy once i do. "

ㅤalan often wonders, not about which parts of himself he left behind in the lake, but what he managed to salvage.  what little scraps of his old self he managed to bring back.  hero or villain?  good or evil?  light or dark?  it’s all become so jumbled in his head as of late, the remnants of the late dr. hartman’s claws still digging painfully into his shoulders, coaxing words still whispered into his ear. 

ㅤthere are times when he feels like the darkness’ influence has become less of a lingering touch and more of a gripping vise with each moment of self - doubt he allows himself, like it’s waiting to grow exponentially every time he shuts his eyes, ready to seep through his teeth at every smile.

ㅤaching fingers, caked with dirt and blood, unfold and grip the papers as he stares at the printed words with an intensity comparable only to seeking answers from biblical text.  in a way, they did serve as a guide, paving a path he’d written but had yet to traverse; every event was unfamiliar, yet unfolded exactly as he’d described.  written readiness had become his shield, his one saving grace against the darkness waiting to devour him. 

ㅤhe'd been certain that this was where the page had been leading them, but the eerie silence stretching along the desolate street didn't bode well. normally, there was a sign. where did the issue lie — within the conceptualization of his writing, or his dwindling understanding of himself?

ㅤfrustration is evident on his features, even beyond the ever-present weariness, as he turns to jordan with a sigh. " yeah. back to square one. "

ㅤrose is a diehard britney spears fan and you can pry this from my cold, dead fingers.

ㅤaccording to the wiki, rose was born in '89, which means she was 9 or 10 when the "... baby one more time" album dropped. you bet your ass she was obsessed right off the bat. merchandise, posters — you name it, she probably had it. a successful girl, only a few years older than her? it was her first real thirst for fame and fortune, an elegant life outside of bright falls. a life that she was not — and if her father had any say, would never be — afforded. over the years, she collected every cd, kept up with televised performances, etc.

ㅤso when britney published her recent memoir, well... of course rose was camped outside the bookstore to buy it on release. and her heart simultaneously soared and sank. reading about how this woman she'd idolized for two decades had been manipulated and controlled for years (by people she'd trusted and provided for, no less) and left a damaged husk, trying desperately to move on and heal, day by day... needless to say, it resonated with her.

ㅤafter a lifetime of living beneath her overbearing father's thumb, and being possessed, used and irreparably changed by the dark presence, she felt as though she had no real authority over her life, a distinct lack of control that she now fears on the daily.

ㅤbut the book gave her a push in the right direction. if someone who went through those awful ordeals could survive, so could she. she's learning to heal, and thankfully found a new purpose in life: serving as the town's new lady of the light, and aiding both alan and the mysterious hero of his newest story in their quest to bring her favorite writer (and not-so-secret crush) home.
