Im hindsight, it was probably puppy love. However, if Hecate had a choice things would have ended differently. Hecate had broken up with Frankie because of something her mother had said to her, words that still haunted her. “Hecate, darling, who could ever love a wicked witch?” Sighing, Hecate leaned back against her stoop, taking a sip from her glass of wine. Her apartment was the only safe place she called home. She liked to sit on the staircase in front of her apartment building. freddie wasn’t exactly fond of shopping, but he did what he had to do. it was his fault he’d broken jacinta’s new art set, anyway ( though she really shouldn’t have kept throwing paint on him ), so he figured he should at least get her a new one. he usually wouldn’t bother, but she was eivui’s family, and he had to at least somewhat play nice. people in town ignored him, which he was grateful for, but he stopped briefly when he heard a voice, and at first he thought the woman was talking to him. even though he knew she wasn’t, he’d already stopped. may as well say something. “do you always lament about being an idiot to yourself in public?”

Riordan made a small noise. It was somewhere in between a small laugh and a scoff. Not that he thought it was a ludicrous point. Just in the fact that it was so difficult to do such a seemingly simple thing. “I guess I won’t be cursed to become a nutcracker, so there’s that. One step closer to being my own king,” he said in an attempt to keep himself from being too sad. 

freddie pressed his lips together in a tight line as riordan made a noise, but he’d expected that reaction. he would’ve done the same. “see? no curses. that’s a good start,” he said. “and something i’ve failed in.” though he wasn’t as bitter about the curse as he used to be.

the tiny girl giggled softly, nodding quickly. “alright, alright. fair enough! what are you in charge of them, huuuh?” she hummed, poking out her tongue at him. as soon as the question left his lips, eivui broke out into a wide smile. “freddie, i would love to officially be your girlfriend!” she exclaimed. “— of course, only if you’ll officially become my boyfriend~” she giggled softly.

“the weapons.” he tapped the sword that hung off of his belt, making sure he didn’t scratch it. it was already worn enough from all the sparring he did. when she agreed to be his girlfriend, he let himself relax, even though there had been no reason for her to say no at this point. “well, of course. that goes without saying, doesn’t it?”

she giggled, scrunching up her nose. “my mama would think i was sick if i didn’t use puppy eyes,” she said, amused. she turned serious when he paused, squeezing his hand gently. “uh huh! i know that very well,” she nodded happily, smiling up at him. “what about it?”

“then you’re in charge of the puppy dog eyes in this relationship, because mine would cause the opposite of the intended effect,” he said with a light laugh. he lowered his head, slightly embarrassed as he continued. “well, uh, i was wondering -- you don’t have to, of course, it’s just an idea -- but, um... did you wanna... maybe... officially become my girlfriend?”

“just add a cute lil pout in there, too — your best puppy dog eyes,” she giggled softly, crinkling her nose. she was just joking, of course. when he spoke again, she looked up at him. “of course, of course, toughest-guy-ever!” she smiled. “you can ask me anything~”

“mum’s gonna think i’m sick or something.” he wasn’t the type to use the puppy dog eyes. he wasn’t good at being ‘cute’ to anyone besides eivui. “well...” he paused, suddenly self-conscious despite the past few weeks. “you know how we... love each other and all that, right?”

eivui giggled softly, crinkling her nose. “maybe if you ask nicely. pretty please with two cherries on top!” she said playfully. she tapped him on the nose. “yes, there’s a problem with that. i am the toughest ever.” she poked her tongue out at him.

“i really don’t think she will, but i could always try.” it was the explaining that would confuse clara. he didn’t think simply saying that his somewhat-kinda-girlfriend wanted to fight them would work. which reminded him -- “by the way, toughest-girl-ever, i’ve been meaning to ask you something.”

Cecily leaned forward, not looking very convinced by his words. “Really? Cause that’s not what the gossip blog seems to think.” She never really believed what she read on the gossip but that didn’t stop her from teasing him about it. 

freddie paused, face expressionless, trying not to give anything away. he had an inkling as to what the gossip blog had been saying about him, but he’d ask anyway. “oh? and what does the almighty gossip blog seem to think?”

she let out a small giggle when he pinched her cheek, crinkling her nose and leaning her head on his shoulder. “i mean, obviously. i could take on a whole army right now! send em at me~” she joked, smiling. she looked up at him, feigning offense. “oh, not as tough as you, huh?” she said, as dramatic as ever; as was the eivui way, after all.

freddie wrapped an arm around her like it was natural for him to do so. “i don’t know where i would get a whole army. well, no, i do, i just don’t think mum would lend them to me,” he joked. “yep, not as tough as me. there a problem with that? hmm?”

she looked down at their hands when he squeezed hers, and a slight smile took place on her lips. looking back up at him, she crinkled her nose, shifting slightly closer. “don’t be sorry. i’m not upset,” she assured, puffing out her cheeks a bit. “i’m a toughie, remember? the toughest.”

when she puffed out her cheeks, he raised his free hand to pinch one, though not roughly. that was the last thing he wanted. “of course. you’re the toughest person i know.” and it wasn’t as though it was a lie. she was definitely tough in her own way. “but not as tough as me,” he teased.

the tiny girl scrunched up her nose. “i don’t care what they think — i don’t know them! they can disagree with me all they want~” she  puffed out her cheeks. it wasn’t as though she’d ever really met anyone else who was good with a sword. “who cares about reputation and image?” she made a face. “reputations are just a status thing. they make people feel bad.” granted, she was a bit biased, considering her reputation wasn’t necessarily a great one — small and weak. she could fit into a locker, for crying out loud.. it wasn’t as though some cruel people around campus weren’t going to use that to their advantage.

freddie wasn’t surprised about her opinion on what other people thought, but her opinion on reputations did. it quickly became clear to him that he’d touched some sort of soft spot, and that was the last thing he wanted to do, especially since the ursula incident hadn’t been all that long ago. he took her hand and squeezed it. there wasn’t any hesitance there, not like there would have been a mere month ago. “i’m sorry, i didn’t mean to upset you.”

Riordan twisted his lips in thought before letting out a soft sigh. “I know he wouldn’t. But, when I imagine what everyone else will think… How could you not try to follow in his footsteps?” 

“then try not to think what everyone else will think.” it was difficult, he knew, and it would be ten times as difficult for rio, who was next in line. compared to him, freddie’s life was a walk in the park. “there are ways to honour him without completely following what he did.”

she just scrunched up her nose, though her usual smile remained on her face. when he slumped down the wall, though, she pouted, but still sat beside him. “you’re the cutest swordsmaaan~” she sing-songed, leaning against him a bit. “nope, nope!” she answered immediately. “my mind has been made, you are cute, and nothing will change that ever ever!”

“i’m sure many of the other people around here who can use a sword would disagree with you.” he’d met a few, after all. there were many royals who could use a sword, and those were merely the people he knew of. “you hear that? it’s the sound of my reputation and image going down the drain.”
