fully just caught up with the whole watcher streaming service situation and i have a few points because this actually made me feel hurt:
1. they should’ve completed a statistics survey to find the general age range of their viewers which if they haven’t noticed yet is teenagers or students
2. these individuals (and i’m sure plenty of others) can hardly afford groceries, gas money, rent, tuition as is and we’re already dealing with so many streaming service platform fees as is (netflix, prime, disney plus…)
3. it is not about the high tech production value of the videos because quite frankly we don’t care about that. it’s about the relationship between shane and ryan and the humour that drew us in back in 2017 anyway. this is a strikingly poor decision.
4. they should attempt to get the show on streaming services that already exist!! they should change the merch and make it more appealing also i seriously don’t think they need so many employers cause at this point it’s getting ridiculous.
5. idk it just feels greedy and like they haven’t been paying attention to their fans at all which is really upsetting
that’s all take it or just keep scrolling <3

Learn something about business for fucks sake, they have pateron that makes 100k a month, merch sales, and ad rev and adsense that makes them something like 30k they are far from over compensated for their hard work, steven is a bad ceo who has no clue how to run a business, loyalty is everything to a business when you need the fans to pay for stuff not to mention their live show. These men are failing cause they suck at business and steven saying everyone can afford six dollars when thats not true is the entitlement here.
Watchertv Situation take
the whole Watcher situation feels a bit like your class teacher personally tutoring you in their free time. And then one day they say, “hey, all this pre-tutoring prep, resources and my services are becoming a lot. I want to be fairly compensated for the work I’m putting in”. Then you go ballistic on them and say they’re being unfair.
“Waaah you’ve tutored me for so long you can’t just stop that now.” “I’ve supported you for so long, how could you do this??”
sorry, in what world is ‘moral support since buzzfeed’ equivalent to the hours of work the hosts and their crew have put into their content?
“But you’re still getting money!! You get paid by the school for your regular teaching already. You’re being greedy”
The state of their financials is a DIFFERENT POINT. The point here is, that everything narrows down to this individual relationship between you, a consumer, and the creator. They are doing something for you for FREE. You should be grateful for what you’ve had so far. They do not owe you anything, and they are not obligated to put your needs above theirs.
Yes, it’s a sucky situation. It’s understandable to discuss the way they handled the matter, the fact that you can’t/won’t follow them behind the paywall, even that this is a bad business decision because of XXX, etc
But cursing at them and acting like an entitled baby is so NOT OKAY. Some of the stuff these so called ‘loyal fans’ are saying about them is VILE
makes me ashamed to see the entitlement and privilege of my generation

Exactly
Very intrigued by the amount of people (myself included) who are saying they didn’t like ghost/mystery files as much as buzzfeed unsolved.
Because this means we were sticking around for loyalty. Because we wanted to see Watcher succeed. Not because of “tv level content” or expensive shows or whatever else.

It's probably steven to pay for that tesla
One thing that keeps confusing me is that they claim ghost files costs several hundreds of thousands of dollars per season. I’ve tried to wrap my head around this ever since the announcement because flying a crew of 6 or so people out for two days and renting out the location COULD NOT be costing that much unless they’re either lying or blowing money on first class flights and expensive food/accommodations and even THEN do I not see them breaking 100k on a single episode. Dear lord hire an accountant I’m half convinced someone’s laundering money

I watched Charlie MoistCritikal’s video on the Watcher drama and he definitely has some good insight considering he runs a company that helps creators get sponsorships, and finding out that with their subscriber & view counts they probably get $15,000-$30,000 per ad read was like the final nail in the coffin for me. So they make $100k a month on patreon + an ad read a week + ad revenue + merch sales? Maybe slow down on making new shows. Cultivate what you have. Maybe remaking worth it… isn’t worth it.
(Charlie’s video is good if you want some deeper insight into the creator economy)

the worst part of this Watcher thing is that no matter what they do now people will not trust them or have the same kind of respect with them ever. this has destroyed the branding & public trust from their fanbase that they've been building since before Watcher when they were all with Buzzfeed. they destroyed years of trust & love from fans in less than a minute with the announcement and once you do that as creatives you can never fully get that back. point being, regardless of what they do now? Watcher is dead.

I have made a decision that i am no longer supporting Shane and Ryan but still like the content so if someone wants to hook me up with that so they dont get ad money that would be nice

Literally the 2nd time ever posting on here, but I’m just dumbfounded by the many different avenues they could’ve actually taken before coming to this!

Is this where I can come to rant about Watcher? Because my friends don't care.
After watching the Goodbye YouTube video yesterday, all I could think about was this video from three months ago. If this hasn't linked to the spot I wanted, to go 16:43, the chapter called Where's Steph. Here, they make it explicitly clear that Shane and Ryan are not comfortable with the business side of things and they have put all of their trust and faith in Steven. Watching this video knowing what we know now, I feel like the Making Watcher series was made to plant the seeds that Watcher want to be more than they are. What it did though was really put this decision FIRMLY on Steven's shoulders, so he needs to be the one that bears the brunt of the fallout.

Fire steven
Cancel his shitty show

It keeps getting worse
If they don’t respond to this TOMORROW they will have eviscerated all the goodwill and love their fans had for them. They should have done it hours ago. Going forward, they either need to consult a professional business manager after this astronomically stupid decision or Steven needs to step down and let someone more competent run the company. No one is paying for another streaming service.
things they could have done:
stressed engagement more (like, comment, share, subscribe, etc.)
promoted their patreon more – there are people in the comments shocked to find out they even had one
youtube memberships (with exclusive emojis!)
given patrons/youtube members exclusive behind-the-scenes videos and/or early release videos
joined nebula & given nebula members exclusive behind-the-scenes videos and/or early release videos
streamed horror games on youtube/streamed horror games on twitch & uploaded the VODs on youtube
decreased the production value & staff required to create videos
any or all of the above
not this
literally anything but this

Im 24 and most of my childhood was caring for my elderly parents yes and making sure things were alright but i also lost my father at 8 and cared for a mother with a heart condition so i really don't even feel like i had a childhood. I feel like i was a mini adult from the time i was young and im still doing it my 20's havent even been treated like my 20's i feel like im in my mid 40's at 24. I didnt go out and drink when i turned 21 i didnt do anything really that said hey im a young adult now. So when people refer to me being a child im like what ? No never
Maybe this is the wrong platform to pose this question given the average tumblr user but
Is it just me or did our generation (those of is who are currently 20-30 ish) just not get the opportunity to be young in the 'standard' sense?
Like, everyone I talk to who's over 40 has all their wild stories about their teens and 20s, being young and dumb, and then I talk to my friends and coworkers and classmates, and we just... dont.

He isnt solely to blame but hes still part of the problem
i unsubbed from Watcher today but the people acting like steven lim is the devil and is singularly to blame for Watcher shifting to paywalled streaming are weirdos.
