bluebird / self para (feat. Kheri)
Freddy couldn’t quite believe the events of the day this far. He had opened his eyes and was somehow walking around and other people could actually see him. He wasn’t the only one, either. Many people were reunited with their loved ones.
Which reminded him…
He wondered where Kherington Rhodes was. Kherington Rhodes, his darling lover as a mere child. Even so, he loved her in death as much as he had in life.
And if something so terrible as death couldn’t stop him from loving her, surely she hadn’t moved on either, right? Well, apparently he was wrong. He was crushed to learn that she was engaged to someone whose name he hadn’t even learned. He couldn’t help but feel a sense of betrayal and maybe even anger as he thought about her loving someone else. As he thought about her falling asleep next to someone else like they weren’t old enough to do but he’d always wanted to.
It wasn’t fair that her name were the last words to pass his lips before he died, and she so easily moved on. How long had they been together? If they were already engaged, surely it was a long time. God he kept getting more and more furious, pacing back and forth in the room he’d bought with money that he took from his parent’s vault in France.
He decided to stop being so angry and do something about it all. If it was only an engagement surely it wasn’t legally binding.
And if he made her love her all that time ago he had no doubts that he’d succeed again. He made his way to what he learned was Queen’s Couture, fashion empire that began under the name “Franklin’s” until Kherington took it over at only 19 years old and turned it into something so much more.
He kept asking more and more people about Kherington because every time he heard her name his heart fluttered and he knew something even more about the one he was determined to go sweep off her feet.
Now he was standing in front of the building where she was. Oh god she was in there. He opened the doors, followed the signs to the top floor. Of course she was on the top floor, she was the best. Every ding of the elevator was another ding closer to her and he could feel his heart racing.
“How can I help you Sir?”
“Hi, my name is Jason Highmore. I’m interested in investing. Is there any way I can meet with Ms. Rhodes?” He asked the woman with purple hair who sat at the desk.
“She’s in a meeting right now. It should be over in 17 minutes if you’d like to wait!” She said with a big smile. “She might want to get home soon though. You can ask her when she comes out if you’d like.”
“No problem! I’ll be right here.” He said, sitting in the room that he’d been led to full of fancy chairs and an espresso machine, that apparently came with its own personal barista.
“Do you want anything, Sir?”
“No thank you.” He replied politely. “Out of curiosity, how did you get this job?”
“Me mam’s a designer here. Got it for me.”
“And you don’t have to answer if you don’t want to but I’m hoping for a job here. How much are you paid?”
“20 Galleons an hour, Sir.”
Freddy almost choked. That was… A very large amount for a coffee server. “Yeah not too much to complain about when all I do is give rich and famous people a cup of coffee.”
“Well thank you for the chat.” He said with a grin.
“Of course.”
He heard a woman’s voice thanking someone for their time. “My people will be in contact with you for a contract before noon tomorrow you have my word!”
“Thank you Miss. Rhodes. It was lovely talking with you. I look forward to any future business endeavors.”
Miss. Rhodes. Oh god. It was really happening.
“How’s life Lolly?” Kherington asked.
“Great, you?”
“Glad to be back at work!”
“We’re glad to have you back. There’s a man in the waiting area. He wanted to know if he could speak with you for a bit.”
“Alright, I’ll give him 20 minutes but then I really have to get back home. I’ve missed my baby! And Lizzy is waiting for me too.”
Freddy always thought it was gross when couples called one another “baby.” It was so unsettling. However he composed himself before she entered.
“Wow.” He whispered to himself, drinking in the sight of her. She was taller than he remembered, and less skinny which was a bit of a letdown but she had a nice figure. Her face, though. It brought back all those memories from the shortlived love that they shared.
“Hello, if you’d like to follow me to my office I need to leave in 20 minutes.” She said smiling at him.
Her smile… He thought about kissing her right then and there but she had no idea who he was and the ring on her left hand was so big he thought it must have actually been heavy.
He nodded, following her heels as they clicked and clacked against the floor. It was not missed by him that her dress was littered with diamonds that were clearly real and he wondered how she’d changed so much.
From the little girl in the pretty pink dress with layers and layers of tulle and curled blonde hair who sang for him as he danced in front of the Eiffel Tower. She had long brown hair now, and she wore stilettos that looked illegal, and the dress. It was black with diamonds embroidered in it. There wasn’t a single detail he’d let himself forget. He didn’t think it was a bad change, really. Just shocking.
“So what can I help you with?” She asked, taking a seat behind a large desk plated with gold. He sat across from her.
“I’m Jason Highmore! I was looking for an interview with your fiancé, but I wasn’t sure how to contact him. I was hoping you’d help me.”
“You’re here for Marcus?”
“Yeah Marcus! Marcus…” He trailed off and she just looked at him questioningly. “I’m sorry, I’ve interviewed so many people. I’m drawing a blank on the last name…”
“Weatherby.” She said, growing quickly annoyed with him.
“Yes sorry! Do you know where he is?”
“Probably at home with our son, or the festival. I had to leave it to make my last meeting so I’m not sure if he’s still there.”
“Your… son?”
This was a lot more serious than an engagement and it felt like there was some sort of earthquake beneath him even though nothing else in the room moved.
“Oh my god yes our son. Don’t you know anything? Isn’t it good journalism to know at least the basics of the one you’re interviewing?”
“Of course. I’m sorry. Can I ask you a few questions?” He didn’t want to stop hearing her voice.
“You’ve got… thirteen minutes.”
“Okay, how long have you been together?”
“Umm… Like a year and two months.”
“And you already had a child?”
“Okay I think it’s time for you to go.”
“No! I’m sorry, I didn’t mean for it to sound like that. I’m very new. I’m sorry.”
Kherington huffed. “You’ve got 7 minutes.”
“How many boyfriends have you had before Marcus?” He inquired.
“I don’t feel comfortable talking about that, actually. This article is not about me it’s about Marcus. Marcus is a great father and has loved me in a better way than anyone has before. We’ll be wed in December.”
“Well congratulations.” He said, having to force out the words.
“Thank you.” She said with tight lips.
“What were their names?” He just wanted her to say his name. His real name.Â
“I’ve said before that I’m not going to talk about that.”
“I’m so sorry, so so sorry. I won’t write anything about you. I was just trying to make small talk but I was told to take everything on record in case I could use it. I won’t use any of it. And I’ll stop asking questions too...”
Kherington sighed, standing up. His time was up.Â
“Okay I’ve got to go. Why don’t you get my address from Lolly at the front and come by someday when Marcus is there. I’m sure he’ll know who you are, and you can sign the journalist contract that you can’t talk about me unless I approve. Nothing personal. Everyone gets one.”
Freddy hadn’t really thought that far ahead and he realized that Marcus wouldn’t know who he was, which was potentially problematic but all he could do was watch the way she walked out of the office as he followed her.Â
“Their names were Freddy and Chris, by the way.” She said, stepping into the elevator. “Talk to Lolly.”Â
He could have stood there for the rest of the day and not minded because his name had finally passed her beautiful, red lips.Â
“I’ll see you soon.” He whispered to the closed elevator door.
