“Hello, love,” he says, trying hard to take a page from his brother’s book on expressionlessness. He is rather certain he fails.

Caroline looks exactly as she had a century ago, when he had last seen her, and yet it is almost as if someone else entirely stares at him now. Such is immortality for those who know how to bear it. Unchanging and revolutionary all at once.

So young, she had been, when he first met her. Now she has grown into the beast the lurks beneath her skin; he can tell just by looking at her. At the strength in her unyielding gaze.

Her lips curl into the tiniest of smiles. “I was afraid you wouldn’t even remember me.”

Klaus doesn’t fight a smile of his own. As if he could ever forget her. As if he could ever quench the fire in his veins at the mere thought that she might be here on a sudden whim to see him. One might think that his feelings tilt the game to her favor but, ah. She has not forgotten him either, you see.

“I was afraid of the very same.” He clicks his tongue. “A year or a century, I said. You didn’t have to be so stubborn.”

Her smile grows wider. Amusement twinkling in her blue eyes like stars. He has missed this. Her. The games and the challenges that have always been used to cover the warmth that lingers behind every interaction.

“Oh, you know how it is. Good things come to those who wait.”

“I’m not known for my patience, as you may recall.”

She rolls her eyes, but he does not miss the way the fingers on her right hand twitch. Her façade of confidence falters. And in one second he can see just how nervous she is by coming here. Scared it might be too late. Scared he might not have waited as he once said he would.

However long it takes.

He swears he can almost see the words reflected in her eyes back at him in the form of a question.

Klaus almost gives into the urge to laugh.

She clears her throat. “I- I did think about-“

He shakes his head, stretching his arm towards her and offering her his hand. “I am sure we can find a way for you to make up for your rudeness throughout your stay. I have had time to plan, you see.”

Caroline raises her brows at him. He doesn’t know why she is here; if for a quick visit or forever. He doesn’t think she knows either. But she lays her hand on top of his and ah- It is as it should be, the course of electricity through his skin.

She meets his eyes as if she feels it, too.

He worried too much.

That was one of the multitude of things that had surprised her about him. Klaus had always seemed carefree — or well, that was perhaps not the best word to describe him, but he had always committed to appearing so above everything and everyone. The most powerful creature on the planet. What could possibly concern him? What could possibly affect him so?

A lot, it seemed

They were cut from the same cloth, as far as she could tell. Anxiety and worry coursing through their veins. That insistent, pounding voice in their heads always going — will this ever be enough?

Will I ever be enough?

They had only differed when it came to the choice of their coping mechanism. Her lists and overbearing-ness. His murder sprees and siblings locked in coffins. Oh, well.

Still. It both filled her with relief and endless unease to watch him now. It was, on one hand, so very comforting to think that he was so similar to her. She could understand him as well as she could herself, and he could read her like she was a book he had written. But it was like a tight grip around her heart, knowing that he sometimes suffered as much as she did.

Even now, his head lying on her lap as she caressed his curls… a frown was ever-present between his brows. Caroline felt tempted to press her fingertips against the crease on his skin and smooth it over, but she knew his concerns wouldn’t be so easily squabbled. Something about Rebekah choosing to move across the ocean. Something about how he sometimes looked at Caroline and seemed to wonder if she would leave him too.

She would be offended by his doubting of her loyalty if she didn’t understand the fear of loneliness too well.

Caroline didn’t comment on it, though. She continued to run her hand through his hair, allowing his content sighs to echo deep with her heart. In a little while, she would make a comment on how maybe he liked her petting him so much because of his wolf nature. And he would growl and protest and hide a smile at her terrible joke.

And maybe little by little he would understand. She was here to stay.

so... there is a bit to unpack here.

FIRST OF ALL, this is a very belated birthday gift for @galvanizedfriend ! I wanted to edit Elijah for you, Yokan, but the result was... terrible 😭😭 so, I hope this little gif will he enough 🙏

Third of all, this is supposed to be Teen!Eve, and I was thinking this could be a scene where Eve is trying to protect herself from a enemy, but she ends up killing them, and when Klaus find her, she's sobbing and saying that she didn't want to do that, she was just trying to protect herself, and Klaus would tell her that it's okay, he'll take care of the rest, the most important thing is that she's safe and alive.

About the AO3 "No Guest Comments for a while" warning

If you're not following any of AO3's social media accounts you might be in the dark as to what kind of "spam comments" have engendered this banner at the top of the site:

These spam comments have been posted about a great deal on the AO3 subreddit for the past couple of days. Initially they comprised a bunch of guest (logged out users) bot comments that insulted authors by suggesting they were using AI and not writing their own fics. Some examples, from the subreddit:

But it then escalated to outright graphic porn images and gifs being posted in comments, again by logged out 'Guest' accounts. Obviously, I'm not going to give examples of those, but between these two bot infestations, AO3 has clearly decided to act and has temporarily closed the ability to post comments for users who are not logged in with an AO3 account.

Unfortunately, this means that genuine readers who don't have an AO3 account won't be able to leave comments on fics that they enjoy.

If you are a genuine reader who doesn't yet have an AO3 account, I strongly suggest getting yourself on the waiting list for one. More and more AO3 authors are now locking their fics down to registered users only - either due to these bot comments or concerns about AI scraping their work - which means you're probably missing out on a lot of great stuff.

Hopefully guest commenting will be enabled again at some point soon, but I suggest not waiting until then. Get yourself on that list.

Wait times are going to be longer than usual at the moment, due to the current Wattpad purge [info on Fanlore | Wattpad subreddit thread], but if you're in line, then your invite will come through eventually.
