from here:
Ben glared up at his mother but it was a fever-glazed glare and lacked any real power. However, he could swear it was more embarrassment that was heating his face right now. She was off for today, and he had been excited.
Not openly but he had thought about it. He had thought about even ignoring that it was an unusual day, in some rebellion. He knew something was wrong. His volatile control was even worse in the morning and he had felt –the city was too loud.
Louder than normal.
He was worried, and he had to hide there was a real problem.
“Fine,” he said. “I’m not sick. I don’t get sick.”
He curled up, trying to study the device in her hand. Maybe he could fake it out.
“Mmhmm,” Leia hummed, resting her hand against Ben’s forehead. “Is that why your forehead is so warm then?” She was being cheeky, but she was a little concerned beneath it. It was true that he didn’t sick often. Maybe it was a Force thing, or maybe it was that he didn’t play with many other children, Leia didn’t really know. She could hardly get him to go outside either way.
“Come on, then, if you’re really not sick, let me prove it,” she said, waving the thermometer in front of his face. Not that she needed the confirmation to know he was ill, but it would at least help her know whether he needed medicine or not. She’d call a medical droid if she needed to, but it was probably better for everyone if she didn’t have to.

“Ben has made his choices,” Leia said. “No one can save Ben but himself. And I don’t know if that is what he wants.” Rey nodded, a sharp dip of her chin. “I know that. I mean, rationally I know, but I guess I held out hope.”

“What happened to him? I mean, how did he turn to the dark side? He started in the light, didn’t he? He told me a story about Luke, about his training.” She exhaled. “I guess I just want to understand.” “I do, too.” “So you don’t know?” “I think you would have to ask Ben what happened to him.”

His own gaze sharpened.
His walls, withholding. It was as he had suspected. Rey had kept two secrets, what had happened in the throne room. The other, what had happened that night. There was a bitter, desperate relief in the wake of the latter. Gratitude. If she was looking for hatred, that would be in time. He was convinced he would through the defiance and the battle. He had to. It would be easier.
She had stood by him when no one else had.
Now was not the time to have the great General doubt it.
No, there was something else churning in the air between them, a resistance to let go. To let go of the girl now. He had expected a deeper betrayal but from the Jedi. From Rey. He had believed there could be no more from the other side.
He was a fool.
“Her power does not frighten you, then.”
He motioned to his face.
“She gave me this scar,” he said, and there was no–no hatred there, either. A strange sort of pride in the damage away from the cold, and the death of a man. “She’s stronger than you know. What I want does not matter, she is what I am asking for.”
And in a manner close to destruction:
“Luke feared her–and you have overcome that fear to use her.”
Leia stood very still, for there was something humming just beneath the surface of his words. Her power does not frighten you. But his did, was that what he meant? Leia couldn’t quite stop the twang of guilt in her heart- it was true, after all. His power had frightened her- but he had been a boy. Rey...admittedly, was barely more than a child herself. But she wasn’t a five year old capable of lifting his bed off the ground, she wasn’t a ten year old with an unexplained shadow in her mind.
Ben had been.
“I know she’s strong,” Leia said, the part of her that was still his mother softening at the mention of his scar. She glanced at it sadly, somewhat at war in her heart. part of her thought good, you deserve it and another thought oh, my poor child...she didn’t know which was going to win. She didn’t want him hurt, whatever he’d done.
Leia’s own conflict was growing harder to hide. But hide it she did. She hadn’t been a senator for twenty years for nothing.
“What you want does matter, I’m afraid,” Leia said, crossing her arms. She had to protect Rey. She hadn’t protected Ben, she hadn’t protected Han, or Luke...she hadn’t protected so many of her fallen soldiers and friends. So she had to protect Rey.
“Rey chooses to fight with us. No one’s forcing her. From where I’m standing, it looks like you’re the one who wants to use her,” Leia said calmly.

cxmeback‌:
“No.” Rey said firmly, and for the first time since the crash she felt as though she were thinking clearly. The heat was beginning to soak into her skin, revitalizing her while tugging at the ache in her head. She felt the same discomfort, the same drive and counter-intuitive peacefulness that she used to feel back on Jakku.
And in her clarity she knew she wouldn’t be leaving Leia here to die.
As badly as she wanted to carry the older woman, it would likely injure her more. They’d have to improvise instead. In a flash, she was gone from Leia’s side and back into the wreckage of the TIE fighter. One sheet of metal, no sharp edges, curved slightly in the middle…that’s what she needed, something that reminded her even more of home.
Using her good hand, she dragged the scrap back over to Leia’s side, something of a proud gleam in her eyes.
“Sit.” she ordered, “On here. Surely there has to be something around here…an outpost, a smuggler’s den…we’ll go there. It’s got to be just beyond this hill.”
That was her theory, anyways. She may never have been to this planet, but she knew the desert. Hills meant valleys. Valleys meant cover, meant shade. They meant civilization, somewhere. There had to be someone nearby.
And she would get Leia there however she had to.
“I’ll pull…you can rest. We’ll get someplace safe and wait there.”
Leia had little choice but to watch as Rey did precisely the opposite of what Leia had ordered. She frowned- why did they never listen? These young, impulsive kids...Rey was as bad as Poe. Thinking they knew best, that the wisdom of the old meant nothing.
She’d been just like them once. She’d have never left her commanding officer to die, either. Leia’s mouth twisted into something like a smile- but it might have looked more like a grimace.
The pain in her side was still throbbing.
With no real option but to obey- she had no more strength to resist- Leia let Rey drag her through the desert. It was slow going, and Leia kept one eye on the sky, watching for signs of any ships that might have received their signal. Their time was limited, and Leia had no idea how she was going to manage to keep Rey safe...if she could at all.
But for the moment, no one was coming. They were utterly alone on the barren planet, and Leia knew her time was running out. She had no back up plans- if this didn’t work, she was doomed to die out here.
Maybe it was fitting. She would die where her twin had lived.
But she’d never see her son again.

it was a lie, of course, he knew. yet even so, he… appreciated it. his head had dipped, he realized, as though he were almost afraid of her answer. but now, as she reached for him, pulling at his clothes, the familiarity of her drew him in. and he looked up, half-frowning.
jedi knight. he wasn’t; not yet, anyway. and a part of him wondered if he would ever be.
the silence that came between them, then, was brief but unusually, powerfully strong. and he felt something in it, something sharp, that pressed on him like a weight, thick and hanging in the air. perhaps there was some merit to his training. she was glad to see him, of course… but there was sadness clinging to her, too. and he felt it. immediately, instinctively, he took the blame.
he was relieved ( immensely so ) when the tension faded as she spoke. and he blinked, almost surprised by her words, having been pulled from his creeping thoughts. he offered her a quick nod, huffing a breath ( a laugh ) at her comment; he agreed. and then, he turned to follow after her, far more grateful to leave that room than he guessed she knew.
“ you won’t be missed? ” it was, in truth, a foolish question; still, it felt right to ask it, anyway. he knew enough about her work to know he hated it. but, she could come and go as she pleased. she had a team to take care of anything while she was out. a good one, he knew.
maybe he’d ask about it, what she seemed to like about politics… one of these days.
Leia glanced back at her desk for a moment- but only a moment, because she really didn’t want to read all those reports anyway- and waved her hand dismissively.
“Not for a while,” Leia said, beckoning for Ben to follow her out of the office. It wasn’t the right place for a reunion, even if it was where she spent most of her time. Leia could sense a slight tension between them- perhaps it was the distance, or the time they had spent apart- but she rather instinctively knew that surrounded by work was not the place to have a proper conversation with her son.
Leia led Ben outside, away from the senate building and down to the grounds beneath it. it was quieter out here, though the rumble of the city was never far away. Speeders zoomed overhead, the long, interconnected highways a constant hum above and below them. Hosnian Prime had always reminded her just a little of Coruscant, though with fewer bad memories to go along with it.
“What brings you back here?” Leia asked when they were relatively alone. Not that it would be especially strange to see a senator with a member of her family- Ben was hardly as secret, and neither was his training. Sometimes she still had to remind herself that the war was over- her secrets weren’t necessarily a matter of life and death anymore.
Well, except one.

sheriscs‌:
Rey could sense the uneasiness in the woman before her. She knew that it was a loaded statement and it probably dug up a lot of difficult memories for Leia regarding Ben…Even Rey had taken to calling him that. No matter how hard she tried he would never be anything but Ben to her now.
As she looked up at the woman, Rey hoped for the words she wished to hear, but she knew it was not something she was going to get. She knew that parents were something she should stop looking for, and yet, it consumed her. “Yes…” She forced herself to smile and nod, “You’re right.” And she was. The general always seemed to be right, but just because she was right didn’t mean that Rey didn’t crave more.
Leia nodded, smiling around her own twisted up emotions. The very concept of being a mother was painful to her now, for it was something she felt she’d failed at miserably. She was acutely aware of how many young people she had failed to protect- so many who were barely more than children had died under her command. To say nothing of the thousands murdered on Hosnian Prime- Leia’s heart ached to think of her old friends and colleagues, some of them as young as 20.
She had not been their mother, but she had been their leader, and that was close enough in some regards. Rey’s words made that apparent enough- she was the mother of the Resistance as much as it’s general. But the one she had really failed, above all else...Leia’s mouth twisted. She’d hate to fail this girl, as her actual parents had, but it almost seemed inevitable.
“...do you remember them at all?” she asked, surprising herself. “Your parents?”

non sexual acts of intimacy meme | not accepting
“Ben, I need you to lie still for a moment,” Leia said, struggling to keep her squirming son in bed. Despite the obvious fever, Ben seemed to think he needed to be just about anywhere else. “Come on sweetie, I need to check your temperature.”
Ben, of course, had protested going to bed in the middle of the day. But when he had wandered into the kitchen with glassy eyes and flushed cheeks, Leia had known immediately that something was wrong. Thank the stars it was her day off, or he’d have been left with only Han to care for him. And Han was, well...Han.
Not that Leia didn’t trust him. She just...didn’t trust him with this. Specifically.

Content released post-TLJ has given them every opportunity to depict Leia trash talking or otherwise disowning or distancing herself from her son, right after he kills Han no less, yet they show her doing none of that. They’ve been doing the opposite, to say nothing of the way they’ve chosen to portray Ben as Ben.
Can’t imagine why 🤷
