to say ayaka’s heart is weak when you plead for her presence in your shared piece of heaven (read: the bed) is an utter understatement.

she would wake up with the sun by your side to fill the dip where her body should be beside you, but you always seem to notice whenever she begins to slip from under the covers.

your hand snakes to her’s; fingers touched by her own and made to fit against the palm of her hand slowly reach out, half-open eyes riddled with sleep and dreams starting to travel along soft strands of sky blue, the drop of her own tired shoulders— voice tendered with rough edges held together merely by the want of having your beloved stay with you for a little longer.

“ayaka... stay... please..” you drawled, and ayaka smiled — shifting to face you, placing a calloused hand on your cheek. she brushes her thumb over the high of your cheekbone where the sun hits and kisses you dear; a slow, bubbling want to replace it with her lips instead coming easily to her like an instinct at the ready.

“ah, but dearest— you know the clan cannot run itself, yes?”

“i know..” you shift into a semi-seated position, searching for your beloved under the weight of languor with a soft touch beneath her cheek. “but i’m sure a few more minutes wouldn’t hurt…”

your other hand takes its rightful place on her waist—tugging her body towards you gently as she falls into your arms and onto the bed with a small yelp.

“my love..” her voice wavers under your set gaze; cheeks dusting with the color of fully bloomed sakuras.

“five more minutes? please?”

a kiss. one on her head, two for her eyelids and the crinkles of her eyes, three for reddened cheeks, four for her lips, five for the underside of her jaw, and—

“alright,” ayaka exhales a shaky breath, fingers catching between your nape and the broad of your shoulders. “but only five, okay?”

she knew the moment she laid eyes on your crooked and still-sleepy grin from your small victory is when she really lost and went completely weak for you..

and yet—is it really that bad to deny herself of heaven (read: you)?

there is no answer, ayaka muses. perhaps she’ll find them in the wake of your kisses?

So you want to write about horses.

Or you're writing and horses show up. Or its a pre-industrial fantasy and your characters have to get somewhere. Or you have a faint idea of your MC's love interest showing up on a white stallion.

Whatever the cause, you're writing, and a horse appears. But you know nothing about horses. I can help.

This is a horse. Horses come in many sizes.

Once a horse is smaller than about 14.2hh, it is generally considered a pony. In the modern day, ponies are not considered suitable for adult riders due to weight and height issues. Some pony breeds, such as Welsh, Fjords, ect. are known for being sturdy, and can more easily carry adult sized humans. Miniature horses should never be ridden by adults.

The above graphic mentions that horses are measured from the top of the withers, not the top of the head. But, what are withers?

The withers are where the horse's shoulders meet the spine, and the neck becomes the back. Withers are incredibly important for saddle placement, as a badly placed saddle in this area can prevent a horse from moving its legs properly, cause a large amount of pain, and even damage a horse's spine. Speaking of spines, this is a horse skeleton, with the withers pointed out.

Horses have four legs. Horses cannot have any fewer than four legs. They are obligate quadrupeds. This is, in part, due to their weight, as well as the construction of their legs and hooves. This is to say, that while cats, dogs, and other animals can be amputees, a horse, short of some incredible magic solution, cannot. Even a broken leg bone will cause a huge amount of problems, as all of the weight that leg would usually hold must be shifted to the other feet, and this causes a condition called laminitis, where the tissue that holds together the hoof and the toe bone becomes inflamed, and begins to separate. Once this happens, the hoof tissue dies from lack of blood, and the bone begins to rotate. This is extremely painful for the horse, and so often the best solution for a horse with a broken leg is to be spared that pain. Famous American racehorse Barbaro experienced a complex broken bone, which began to heal fine, but complications from laminitis in two of his other legs caused him to be put down. This is why media will almost always show a horse with a broken or injured leg being 'taken care of'.

Now, racehorses like Barbaro are moving at the fastest speed and the fastest gait of the horse, the gallop. The patterns that horses move their feet are referred to as gaits, with most horses having four, with some breeds having five or more.

The first gait and the slowest is the walk. In the walk, all four feet move independently, which leads it to be called a four-beat gait, as the footfalls make a sort of drumbeat on the ground.

The next gait is the trot, a two beat gait with diagonal pairs of legs moving together.

The trot is a very bouncy experience for the rider, and can be uncomfortable. Some riders will rise and fall with a pair of diagonal legs, called a posting trot, some will stand in their stirrups, called a two-point or jump position, and some will sit the trot, which requires a lot of core strength (seriously, if you want a strong core, screw the gym)

The third gait is the canter, a three-beat gait with a single diagonal pair. This gait is ridden sitting, and feels a lot like going over waves on a jetski. There is a rise, a scoop, and a fall feeling. The canter is also called a lope in Western riding, they are the same gait.

A gallop is sometimes considered a variation on canter, as it is similar save for the legs actually moving in a four-beat pattern. As you can see with the image of Barbaro, all four of his feet are moving in different patterns, at different times, even though the gallop is really a four beat version of the canter. Riders in the gallop rise off the horse's back into a raised position, which allows the horse to use the full length of its spine and musculature to get as much reach and speed as possible. It feels like riding on top of a train barreling down the tracks, at least until your horse takes an unexpected turn and the ground is suddenly the only thing you're riding.

^ I've been there. The trick is to push away and hit the ground rolling, it hurts less that way. And don't land on your head.

first kisses: a little unsure, a little nervous. lips lingering over each other but not touching. overthinking, almost pulling away, but then looking into their eyes and just going for it. it’s soft, gentle.

“i need you now” kisses: them fisting your shirt into their palms, your hands under their shirt, cold fingertips against their skin, and panting, moving down from their lips to their neck, soft moans that turn louder, shirts being pulled off haphazardly

“why thank you, my dear.” he moves to slip his fingers under your jaw, tilting your head up to meet his gaze. “but.. i must say; you are more refined than any star i've ever come across.”

for a moment, his touch burns; and you're further drawn into it, like a moth to the flame. “how charming, my sun.”

his fingers glide down to your chin, turning your head a bit to his left — eyes flickering to yours in amusement. “my sun? how darling can you be, hm?” a sigh runs and falls from your lips at his words, cupping his hand in yours as you lean in and let the sun kiss you softly.

“as much as you need me to be.”

i know it’s been said before, but it bears repeating: a big, big part of maintaining your confidence & self esteem as a creator is fully embracing the concept of “you don’t have to be good like them.  you can be good like you.”

for example, i’m not someone who’s particularly good at coming up with complex, elaborate plots or incredibly unique ideas.  it’s just not how i choose to write.  and it would be easy for me to look at someone with an elaborate, super unique plot & decide that because i don’t write like that, i’m not a good writer.  after all, unique plots are good, and my writing lacks those, so my writing must not be good, right?  well, no, actually.  i just have different strengths, like taking a simple premise & digging super deep into its emotional depths.  that’s what i do well & it isn’t any better or worse than people who do elaborate world building or come up with really creative and unexpected plots.

your writing is never going to be all things to all people.  it just isn’t.  inevitably, you’ll have to make creative choices that favor certain aspects of writing over others.  there is truly no getting around that & it’s honestly a good thing, because it means you’ve developed your own style.  but you’ll always encounter other creators who posses strengths that you don’t.  it doesn’t mean one is better than the other or that your writing isn’t good enough. 

comparing yourself like that would be like taking a piece of pizza & a cupcake & going “oh no, that cupcake is so sweet & my pizza isn’t sweet at all.” or “gosh, the garlic crust on that pizza is delicious and my cupcake doesn’t have ANY garlic.”  obviously your pizza isn’t sweet.  obviously your cupcake doesn’t have garlic.  a food can’t have every single delicious flavor at once.  the cupcake is good like a cupcake.  the pizza is good like a pizza.  so you don’t have to be good like them.  you can be good like you.
