In the same relaxed, instinctive movement, you and Johan wrap your hands around one another's throats, and squeeze.

You're not trying to kill each other - though any of you could change your minds about that any second. You know what he's doing. He knows what you're doing. You're feeling for pulses.

You find them.

Johan's eyes are on yours. Cool, empty blue. His gaze travels down your curling lashes, to your smooth cheek, rests briefly on the soft pink of your mouth as though he is toying with the option of pressing his mouth to it, then goes down to the soft pulse point that thumps so surely underneath his finger. You shouldn't have one. Logically, neither should he. Neither of you really exist.

In a single, unified movement, the two of you withdraw.

An enormous empty coldness vibrates in the spot where Johan's presence should be. He's the only gap in the packed ballroom floor. Everyone who passes him suppresses a primal shudder. He should not be.
