The Lost Year

Sixteen, the sweetest season in a young girl’s life,

Seems to be passing me by

Dreary days darken my demeanor

As the last slivers of my childhood slip away

I should be excited to be so grown up, so independent,

But the reality of the future leaves me afraid,

Dreading the next age anniversary  

I can’t even look forward to the gifts

Or make a wish upon the countless coruscating candles covering my cake

Because my only true wish would to be sixteen again,

To have a second shot to make the year right
