/// I headcanon that often when Rocket interacts with people he is projecting a persona, that tough, gritty, sarcastic, kinda mean guy you hear that is him more or less acting up. He hides under a shell of this version of himself that he wants people to see so they don't get too close because he is so vulnerable. He is angry, depressed and hurt under all of what he shows and I think the first time you really see him shed that facade is when they are on Yondu's ship discussing the plan to stop Ronan. You hear Rocket say, "but Quill, stopping Ronan... it's impossible. You're asking us to die."
His voice is soft, it's serious, it's raw. He wants to compromise with Quill here, he's wanting to be a team player but he's expressing he's scared and that even if he does care, he doesn't foresee a way to do what is being asked.
Tumblr media
This is Rocket unfiltered.
No jokes, nothing cruel, no theatrics, not acting tough.
Tumblr media
These moments are rare overall, mostly come through when he's at his lowest points but I want to highlight he's a multi faceted character that is more than just an asshole. Other times we've gotten to see Rocket unfiltered is with Yondu (several moments), talking to Thor in the pod, his moment of silence with Nebula, during their last meeting in vol 3, and the clip of Rocket leading the new Guardians. ///

"So it's a female cult then?" Rocket asked, quirking a brow. "So... no sacrificial lambs or virgins or anything like that?" he sounded amused at the talk of a musical cult but only for the fact it existed.
"You know I'm always down to hear some new music."
"Yeaaa luckily this is more the swooning over their idol, exchanging bracelets and sisterhood... unless someone dis's taylor online they can be like vultures... mildy interesting to watch tho. Oooh speaking of Idol I should introduce you to K-pop..."

"That good huh? Eh... I am not big on cults though... the whole chanting and sacrificing thing is a bit of a turn-off."
"Ah Taylor Swift. very VERY popular pop artist. You have probably heard it and didn't know. I swear she is everywhere. Her fans are usually called Swifties. Mildly cult-ish at this point."

Rocket blinked slowly, his gaze snapping up to Steve's face as the Captain shared his own vulnerabilities. It was a side of him that Rocket rarely saw, let alone experienced from others. He was used to being the one dispensing wisdom or sarcasm, never the one seeking it. But hearing Steve's words, his guard dropped just a bit more.
"That's...that's a lot, Steve," he admitted, his voice thick with unexpected emotion. "I didn't know you had to go through all that too." The realization that they weren't so different after all, hit him hard. It was both comforting and a little disconcerting. "I'm sorry to hear that... about what they did to you."
Tumblr media
He felt a twinge of pain at the thought of being sterilized, but he shoved that feeling aside, but hearing Steve's words, he began to wonder if maybe, just maybe, it wasn't such a bad idea to seek out that missing piece, whoever or whatever it may be.
Admitting you're afraid… well, that's new for me," Rocket admitted with a wry smirk. "Even so... I didn't… I didn't mean to… bring up bad memories or anything like that," he murmured, glancing down at their joined hands. He could feel the warmth of Steve's touch, and it was a strange sensation that he wasn't quite sure how to process. There was something comforting about it, something that made him feel like maybe he wasn't so alone after all. "But I suppose if we're going to fix our puzzles, we need to acknowledge the missing pieces first, right?"
He looked up, his eyes holding a seriousness that belied his typically flippant demeanor. "You've got a way of making sense out of the chaos in my head."
Tumblr media
"We're not all that different Rocket if you think about it. As a young kid I spent a lot of time in doctors offices, they did a lot of work trying to get me well but there was some poking and prodding and well there wasn't always the best intentions either. Once they decided I was invalid they made me sterile. It was the late 20s early thirties and they didn't want another sickly kid."
He paused looking at Rocket and shaking his head. "You know the thing about being a puzzle? Sometimes you can ask for help to find the missing piece. Puzzles are usually best worked on with others."
He was feeling something in himself. Trying to be a mentor to Rocket in a way that many had tried to be to him.
"Maybe that's why I relate to you so much, we're not so different I mean. And I can understand what it's like to be scared. I have been afraid to be alone or be left behind before too."
He placed a hand on Rocket's hands. "But you know the first step is always admitting you're afraid."

"Well what's swift then?" Rocket asked. His knowledge of Earth music, while he embraced what he had on the Zune and was always trying to learn more, he lacked constant exposure to new artists and hits and had not ever heard of whatever 'Swift' was.
"Yeaaa music is in our soul... I don't get the name either, just always been like that... I mean it is a catchy tune, nothin like swift or anything, more one of those funny tunes for kids." She shrugs and booped his cheek gently.

Steve's words resonated with him more than he cared to admit. Rocket nodded slowly, looking down at his feet. "Thanks, Captain," he muttered, avoiding eye contact. "I… I guess I could work on expressing myself better."
Tumblr media
Eyes narrowing slightly, he listened to Steve's words. He didn't like being told what he felt or needed, but at the same time, there was something about Steve's tone that made him feel…seen. Like Steve really did understand him, and wasn't just trying to fix him.
"I guess I never thought about it that way," he said again, his voice a little softer. "But yeah, my background…it's hard to shake off sometimes. I grew up in a lab…experimented on since I was… well, since I can remember. They were always poking, prodding me, pulling parts off me, sticking bits where they didn't belong… experimenting with genetic manipulation, augmentation. So, yes, it's easier for me to feel nothing and not care."
He leaned in a little, his voice dropping to a whisper. "You know, I've been thinking about all this a lot lately. About who I am, and why I am the way I am. And I think…I think I might be starting to figure some things out... about why I guard my feelings better than my guns." He brushed the self-consciousness away quickly, wishing Steve wouldn't see his vulnerability as weak or pathetic. After all, he had seen him open himself up sometimes – showing his fears, doubts, regrets. It only made him respect him more if anything.
He glanced up at Steve, his eyes searching for something, ad yet, his heart felt heavy as he heard the man tell him that he believed in him, like he was experiencing the weight of not being able to do something that sounded so simple.
"I've tried, Steve. I've tried so hard to believe in myself, but it's hard when you're constantly reminded that you're nothing more than a creation, a machine. A thing."
He looked down at his hands, flexing his fingers absent-mindedly as he struggled to find the right words. "It's like… I'm a puzzle, and someone else put all the pieces together. But I'm still missing a piece. A big one. And I don't know how to find it, or what it even looks like." He shook his head, trying to clear the fog of emotions clouding his thoughts.
Steve's words about being emotionally stifled resonated with Rocket. He had been conditioned to suppress his feelings, to focus on his work and nothing else. But as he spent more time with the people, he found himself opening up more and more. It was both terrifying and exhilarating, like walking on a tightrope without a net.
Rocket's eyes dropped, and he fidgeted with his hands, feeling a mix of emotions wash over him. "I'm scared, Steve. I'm scared of being hurt, of being rejected, of being abandoned. And I don't know how to overcome that fear."
"Well hiding too much will always get you into trouble in the end. People want to know that you feel like they do. No one wants to be emotionally stifled or have someone around that can't express themselves at all."
Tumblr media
"You're a good guy Rocket, you just need to believe in yourself the way I believe in you. I can't help but think most of this is just coming from your background. Not that I know it but rather just have a feeling most people were made to hide themselves...not born that way."

Rocket chuckled at her making yet another one of those sounds. He shook his head with a snicker at her explanation.
"You humies will sing about d'ast near anything, so I am not surprised," Rocket said simply. "Though I don't know why you'd call it blowing a raspberry, if it sounds like a something caused by beans. I never heard a raspberry sound anything like that."
He scratched at his whiskers a moment thinking about it. "Is it at least a good song?"
Sticking her tongue out and making a fart noise she laughed again. "Yeaaa tacos do that. Tis the beans. They have a whole song about it you know?"

@byondtheveil Giggling when he tried to fix his fur she just grinned her usual troublemaker grin. "Just cause. It is called blowing raspberries. If you do it right up against the skin it sounds like this." She said and did it on the back of her hand.

Rocket watched her demonstration, his ears folding back at the sound it made. "Sounds like Drax after taco-night."

Blows a raspberry on rockets cheek.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Rei tries to blow a raspberry on Rocket's cheek, she just winds up blowing air into his fur, and making him chuckle. The sound she may have expected not being possible on a furry face like his.
"What the hell? That tickles," he said, more as a statement than a question. He brushed against the spot she tried to blow a raspberry with his claws a bit, fixing his fur back into place.
"What're ya givin weird kisses for?" Of course he thought it was just some weird type of earth-kiss. He had never seen or heard about blowing raspberries before and putting your lips on someone without biting them was just a kiss in his perspective.

Rocket sometimes wondered, how jaded he really had become, and if there was any recovery for it, so hearing Steve say he'd become less selfish over time, he nodded. He was aware that he wasn't just battling with things about his self image, but more internal emotions pertaining to how his value as a person was probably arbitrary on his ability to task, whether it was fixing, inventing, fighting, planning... He was afraid to find out how much he mattered beyond that... but not with Steve. He not only always validated Rocket as a person, but somehow saw the good in him that even he couldn't see.
"No offence, but I think that's partially your fault," he said, trying to lighten the mood. He was still trying to dry off his eyes, not wanting to break down anymore than he had, he had as much anxiety about showing his emotions openly as he had about the topics that gave him anxiety in the first place, not that (he'd ever admit he even had anxiety.)
"You been kinda a good influence, I think," Rocket said softly, clarifying what he meant about what Steve was at fault for.
A lot of times if he found himself feeling emotional, he found himself reeling in memories of his past, being mocked for crying or made to feel stupid. It made him guarded even with people he wanted to trust, even people he logically knew he SHOULD trust.
"I guess I never really thought about it that way," he admitted, his tone genuine. "I've always been good at hiding… stuff." He paused, shifting under the pat on the back, he couldn't . It was rare for anyone to see past his tough exterior, let alone someone as sharp as Steve.
"But... thanks Steve, you're a good friend. I just want you to know I appreciate it..."
Tumblr media
"Well I don't know. I'd argue you still do good now. I'd say you've gotten a whole lot less selfish over the years minus trying to collect Bucky's arm. I kid about that but seriously. You've been doing a lot of good lately and I know that feels like it always gives you the short end of the stick. "
Tumblr media
"I know I felt that way when I lost Bucky. When I had to crash the plane and everything I knew was gone when I woke up. I know it feels dismal sometimes but there is always hope." He patted Rocket's back and shook his head. "Don't apologize for emotions. We all have them. It's okay to express yourself Rocket. I know that I do...I've learned holing things inside just lets you explode later..."

"Well... it's true your tech seems grossly underdeveloped, but from the sounds of it you're starting to catch up pretty good... but back on Earth when they contacted me to help with your plans with the whole time heist, that was a stroke of genius, I didn't even know that could be done... so I dunno... I think you can handle whatever gets thrown your way."
Rocket's gruff bravado had slipped for a moment there, letting it show he really did respect Scott, even in front of his team. Rocket didn't really talk much about the whole time machine much around his friends because he really didn't want to show how bad he wanted to get them all back. Showing any sort of vulnerability wasn't really his style at the best of times, so he did avoid eye contact as he admitted he thought Scott could adapt to space-tech better than most Earthers.
Peter gave Scott a hearty slap on the arm. "You'll be fine, dude. I learned this shit when I was eight. It ain't that hard."
Kraglin smirked knowingly, surely having a plethora of stories that would contrast that claim but he kept his mouth shut. He wasn't one for stirring the metaphorical pot too much.
"And if anything gives you trouble, you got Rocket, and anyone of the Guardians to help out... besides maybe Drax," Peter added, adding the last part in a slightly lower voice. Drax was not paying especially close attention so he didn't overhear it. "Or ... Groot since you probably can't understand him."
"I am Groot..." Groot said in a lecturing tone.
"Yeah I know he just got here, that's not the point."
Groot just let out an annoyed grunt but it was clear he felt left out.
"Point being, we're a team, and we look out for each other and that includes our friends."
Tumblr media
Scott shrugged and bobbed his head in reluctant agreement. “Honestly with the tech you guys have, we might as well be using floppy disks and computers that take up whole rooms that take an hour to spit out one piece of paper. I feel like we’re that far behind…”
He thought about all the fancy tech and science back home. All of Tony’s work and everything Pym Tech could offer. Even his own suit, he once thought was the pinnacle of science and technology. Okay to be fair, he still thought his suit and the Pym Particles were. To Scott, they would always be hard to beat. But with everything he’d seen so far on this space heist adventure and everything he was about to do, he could help but feel like Earth tech was like the kid sibling with little legs trying to run after the big siblings. “…now that I know what else is out there.”

"What? You sure did your research," Rocket teased in a semi sarcastic tone. "Actually some of the food does come in pouches, but they're more like mush than liquid. No pills though... but it wouldn't shock me either if that was a thing for some planet's upper-crust. With our line of work sittin' down and prepping a real meal is kinda a luxury, so we gotta keep nourishment on the quick n' easy... but we keep regular snacks and food too, and don't worry I know what kinda stuff you humies like. You in the mood for mush or crunch?"
Probably about the weirdest way he could have asked what Spider-Man wanted for sustenance, but at this point it was more about recharging their energy than anything. It only made sense to take the time to grab a bite while they could breathe a bit.
Noir doesn’t relax much until Rocket had the ship out and zipping through the cosmos. The raccoon’s obvious ease and the singular view through the windshield was what it took to get the detective to start releasing some tension.
So far, so good. It just remained to be seen if Rocket’s ploy would play out as he predicted or not…
Noir tilts his head curiously when Rocket mentions getting a meal, little guy was actually hungry at a time like this?
…..when was the last time Noir had even last eaten, actually…..?
Tumblr media
“Meal break? Do you actually have real food out here in space or is it all in pill form? Or little liquid pouches?”
He asks half seriously, turning to look down at his companion as he did so.
