~Meet the Pigs Series~⁠ ⁠ Meet Midnight! I absolutely love this photo I got. He is really hard to get pictures of being solid black and I finally got him with some detail! ⁠ ⁠ He is Timber's half brother from the same litter. You might think, "How is that possible?" His mom Amaretto had 8 piglets, 7 of them had one dad Kenny who was a Tuahuru and little Midnight had a completely different dad who was named Believe the Hype and was a Tutaki! We DNA test all piglets and this how we know "who the daddy" is. ⁠ ⁠ If you have been following all my posts. I started the Meet the Pigs Series at the start of February and today you have officially met all 24 of our pigs! ~Meet the Pig Series~⁠ ⁠ Meet Chopper! He was the first cream born on the farm so I had to keep him. He was part of our Anime One Piece litter. He is just the sweetest guy even though he is one of our largest boars. He loves all attention and is so gentle around everyone. His dad is Uno so he inherits that wonderful personality from his dad. He is Boris bloodline but was born without wattles. ⁠ ⁠ We have him paired with Timber this year. Timber has a timid personality and is on the smaller boned side. So I think Chopper will bring some good structure and personality to this litter! ~Meet the Pig Series~⁠ ⁠ Meet Shyla! She is our Trish bloodline and a spur of the moment purchase. We saw an ad on Facebook pop up and she was close by. We went and saw her and bought her in less than 2 hours of the ad being up! She had her first litter last year and hope to have another late summer litter with her and Puck this year. ⁠ ⁠ She was extremely shy when we got her, hence the same Shyla. It looks a while but she's just as friendly now as our other pigs. ~Meet the Pigs Series~⁠ ⁠ Meet Franny! Franny is our Haunene sow, she had 9 piglets in her first litter last year during that horrible drought we had. We also showed her and she got a Champion title added to her name. ⁠ ⁠ We are currently looking for kids or adults who are interested in learning to show pigs. You get to work with a pig of your choice! You would visit your pig 3 or more times a week depending on your schedule and work with training your pig how to walk with a whip. The show is virtual so we will submit video entries on May 7th! We will cover all show entrance fees, if you win any prizes they are yours to keep! We will provide all supplies and training. ~Meet the Pigs Series~⁠ ⁠ Since we just met Pike, you should meet Lefty! She is a 2nd generation import from New Zealand (her Grandparents were imported) There were two girls in the litter who looked exactly alike except one had white on her left ear and the other had white on her right ear. So that is where she got the name Lefty. ⁠ ⁠ She is currently our only pig with an ear tag. However, this year IKHR is requiring all registered pigs to have an ear tag. The ear tags are RFID and there are some pretty cool technologies out there to be able to track your animals when they are on pasture or how often they are drinking water, etc using RFID.⁠ ⁠ She is on the smaller side and will be turning two years old on March 13th. She has loved being with Pike and getting to graze in the big pasture with the pond during the day. ~Meet the Pigs Series~⁠ ⁠ Ranseur may look like a big intimidating boar but he's my baby! He is our Tonganui bloodline, we picked him up in a huge acreage where he was pasture raised with his herd, so he hadn't been handled much. But he instantly fell asleep in my arms while we walked around and talked. Him and Franny lived in the house for a really long time but once Ranseur's hormones started to kick in, he had to get moved outside. He is still my big baby and with try to crawl into my lap! I am surprised on how tall he got! We knew his sire who was a very compact guy with short legs. ~Meet the Pig Series~⁠ ⁠ Meet our gentle giant Glaive! He is normally pretty clean but I caught him on a mud bath day. He came from our good friends at Liberty Farms in Louisiana. They breed the best temperates into their pigs and they need to because they LOVES them BIG! Even though he is the largest boar we have, he lets Uno be the top pig. Glaive has those perfectly shaped Kunekune ears, he's got half of a mustache and is always smiling! ~Meet the Pig Series~⁠ ⁠ Meet Riley! Everyone should know this face! She is Scarlett's daughter and Panda is her grandma. We affectionally called her "Little Mess" for the first 3 month of her life. She was born with a neurological problem that caused her to spin uncontrollably and could not latch to nurse. We brought her in right away and had to feed her by wrapping her in a towel and spoon feeding her every 2-4 hours for the first week. She had no control over her body and would bite so hard and flail around. She would throw food everywhere and when Gerber baby rice cereal dries its like hard cement! It's near impossible to get off the walls! So that is how she got the name Little Mess. Josh and I tried not to get attached since we didn't think she would make it. My sister came to visit when she had just turned 2 weeks old and she just fell in love. She would take Riley out and they would take naps together. She would try to help Riley walk in straight lines and not spin. If it wasn't for my sister taking the extra time to help Riley learn to be "normal" I'm not sure she would have thrived like she did!⁠ ⁠ Riley is now 8 months old, she has been spayed and no longer spins. The neurologist specialist think she will have a nice long life and that her brain will adjust and learn. She still does some odd behaviors that none of our other pigs have done. Like the sucky face, she nurses the air now when we give her food. It take her so long to eat because she has to suck now after every bite. I think its her suckling response finally kicking in! Then she also "head bangs" the floor all day long. This is another piglet behavior they normally do to their mother's teats. They root them a little and then nurse. Riley didn't develop these natural behaviors until 5-6 months of age! I hope she doesn't grow out of it because it is so cute! ~Meet the Pig Series~⁠ ⁠ Panda! She was the 2nd pig to give birth on our farm and she taught us what a good mother pig should be like. She LOVES her babies so much. She is always gentle and sings to them. She spends hours just staring at them in awe with so much love. ⁠ ⁠ One year one of her piglets was not doing well and she was gentling nosing him because he wasn't going to nurse like the rest of them. I saw her doing it on the camera and told Josh he better get the little guy to the vet. When Josh got to the vet, the tech tried to take the piglets temperature but she could not find a butthole. She was very confused and thought maybe pigs had it some where she wasn't looking. Josh looked and sure enough the poor little piglet was born without one. We had to put him down and Panda has never forgotten that Josh took one of her babies and never brought it back! Ever since then if Panda has piglets, she will not let him anywhere near her babies. ⁠ ⁠ When its weaning time and the piglets are ready to go to their new homes. We always have the new parents come pick up their piglet and meet the parents. Panda likes to meet them and "approve" before they can go to their new homes. ~Meet the Pigs Series~⁠ ⁠ Archie! One of our newest additions. We like to name our pigs after Medieval weapons. My last name is Halbert which most likely came the Halberd. Last names often represented the family trade so this means my family made Halberds! ⁠ ⁠ Archie's registered name is Arquebus which is a type of gun from the 15th century. She is our Tapeka line after our pig Clover aka Culverin passed away early last year. A Culverin was a French canon and an ancestor of the Arquebus. Clover is Archie's aunt, daughter of Clover's full sister. ⁠ ⁠ All of our pigs really do hold a special place in our hearts and have a lot of meaning to us. Josh drove 8 hours to pick her up and they quickly became best friends. Archie lived in the house for most of her life and right before Thanksgiving I had to be the bad guy and move her outside. 4 pigs in the house were way too many! ⁠ ⁠ Archie had the biggest ears we have ever seen on a pig but thankfully she has grown into them! She loved to cuddle with Josh and if he laid down, she would get up from wherever she was sleeping and run to him to snuggle up in his arm. It was adorable! She has the roundest little nose too. Most pigs have a heart shaped nose but her's is a cute little circle! I love it when she sits and just looks at you with her cute little nose pointing up at you. ⁠ ⁠ She is also the loudest screamer during meal time!
