Eyes lowered down to the parts once more, picking up the delicate parts to begin and place them together again, she needed something to distract her from the guilt that welled up inside of her, the anger for the reason that the male had to even worry about her, why everyone needed to worry about her!

She never even noticed that she had thrown down one of the parts that she was holding back onto the table, taking in a deep breath as she tried to reclaim what control she had, reiterating the steps that the therapist that they had insisted that she needed to see after all that occurred as she thought carefully on the words that she would say next.

". . . You don't need to worry, there is nothing to report but I will let you know if there is any word from HQ."

FOR A MOMENT CHRIS WAS STRUCK , BEFORE THERE WAS A SMALL GRIN PERKING UP ON THE CORNER OF CHRIS‘ lips and he slowly shook his head as he raised his hands in defeat. „ alright , alright. i am not touching anything. i swear. “ , he promised and headed back to the kitchen counter to lean against it and grabbed his cup again. „ hey , it wasn‘t that bad , alright. “ , he defended himself with a soft chuckle and glanced at jill. „ and it‘s not like i did it on purpose. i was just trying to help out. “ , he added quietly , as he raised the cup once more to his lips. „ anyways any new leads.. not that i wouldn‘t like to see you out on the field again , i just don‘t want you hurt , jill. “

Chris was brilliant at many things but there was no way in Hell she was letting her samurai edge become another victim of the Redfield touch.

there was a small smile tugging on the corner of his lips as he raised the cup to his lips once more and took another slow sip , trying not to burn his tongue on it , as he nodded. at least there was one thing jill was right about. they did their job so others didn‘t have to wonder or even suffer more. „ so need a hand with t hat ? “ , he asked and raised his chin to nod towards her work , as he put the cup aside and moved to stand next to jill. „ i mean i probably can‘t help much , but i am not here to complain about life , though. “

It was rare to have moments like this, where there was a calm before the next inevitable storm that would be called in from command but Jill could never rest, she always had to be doing something whether it be something as simple as dismantling her sidearm and meticulously cleaning each part as she was now, her own cup simmering away beside her as she listened to Chris, misty blue eyes glancing up as she laid down one of the delicate parts of the firing mechanism she was working on.

"I would be lying if I said I didn't think the same, that we should all be at JJ's right now betting on Kendo and Barry's latest longshot competition or celebrating Brad being officer of the month."

Reaching over to her coffee she took a sip, grimacing at how bitter the taste was but she would need that extra rush of caffeine to keep going.

"But that is why we are doing this right? so nobody else has to question the same 'what if' that we do."

CHRIS TOOK A SIP FROM THE CUP WITH THE FRESHLY BREWED COFFEE INSIDE AND JUST stared down at it , as he was exhaling a deep breathe , caught in his own thoughts , when he slowly looked up at jill. „ do you ever think about how things would have been if raccon city didn‘t happen or if we never got betrayed ? “ , chris asked , brows creasing together. these fleeting thoughts sometimes haunted his mind , sometimes were so primary on his mind that he just had to ask , if he was the only one. how many deaths could have been prevented ? how many innocent lives could have been saved if nothing ever went to shit ? sure he was certain they would have still chased after the bad guys , but perhaps his trust in humanity wouldn‘t have been shattered to pieces like this , trusting wouldn‘t have been so hard on him , even though he tried. „ nevermind. “ , he was quick to shoot and he shook his head. „ it‘s stupid anyway. sorry. “
