I love Hayao Miyazaki, and his themes of flight/magic realism especially! Mirabel's wings are based loosely on those of Otto Lilienthal the "flying man" who received similarly dubious results.
Plotbunny, again and again...
In the course of a discussion with the co-autor came up with this idea, in the spirit of anime by Hayao Miyazaki.
Something about a weirdo uncle living in the highest tower, who keeps dreaming of making wings and flying in the sky, and his niece, who comes to him despite the family's "Ah, let's not talk about this weirdo who tarnishes the respectable image of our family". And as she looks at the drawings, and Bruno tells her how birds fly, how the shape of the wings affects the speed and type of flight, and she comes to him every day, and no longer looks at the wings, but at his hands, his face, eyes that sparkle with dreams, listens to his voice. And then there seems to be a good boy matchmaking, and on the day of an important dinner, Mirabel forgets about it, and instead of sitting at the table in the company of the suitor for her hand and heart, spends the whole night in Bruno's tower because they are watching night butterflies and bats fly. And the ending needs something so magrealist. Bruno makes wings and Mirabel volunteers to try them out. And so she puts on this device and jumps from the tower, and Bruno's own wings grow out of terror and he picks her up at the very ground. And they soar together into the sky and fly in fluffy clouds.

Bruno is realizing he’s dropped the ball on being the responsible one yet again.
My dear friend and I force Bruno and Mirabel to work at our awful office day jobs to cope. In this familiar scene, they get trashed in a bar after a hard day.

"You’re reading it now?" "Of course!"
As a birthday gift, Bruno wrote Mirabel a story based on her favorite telenovela characters. Isn’t it both flattering and mortifying when someone reads your work in front of you? No rats to hide behind this time.

"As they walked back to Casita, Mirabel’s long mantilla flapped over her shoulder in the breeze, and they exchanged soppy smiles as he stopped her to set it to rights. His fingers trailed over the edge of the lace."
From Chapter 2 of Under the Sacred Canopy by la_cotorra_encantada on AO3
Under the Sacred Canopy is a fascinating and enjoyable fanfic that is both a Brumira romance and a realistic story of the cultural, religious, and quotidien norms underpinning a rural Colombian village in the mid 20th century. La_Cotorra_Encantada has an amazing grasp of this setting, and brings the characters to life within it. If you miss any of the Madrigals from the lovely but too-short movie Encanto, you can read this and spend time with them.

Encanto x Star Trek x Brumira Alternate Universe
@takhesis your idea inspires me to admit to already chewing on the idea of how an Encanto crossover with Star Trek would work. It's BRUMIRA IN SPACE.
A Flying Village
The Madrigal family and village are refugees from a galactic war, traveling the Delta Quadrant on a sentient ship (Casita). Just like in Encanto, they are an isolated, interdependent community. They must always keep moving: to make sure the ship is fueled and fed, and to continue to escape.
Being in a tin can in space only makes the community more claustrophobic. Captain Alma Madrigal has strict rules for the entire community, and even stricter rules for her family who she holds to something like starfleet academy standards and professionalism. There are scheduled watches, well-delineated duties, and rankings. It is easy to see the Madrigals as their function to the community. Everyone on the bridge has their assigned seat, like a part of the ship iteself. Meanwhile Julieta would be in med-bay, Isabela on hydroponics agriculture, Dolores on radar.
Poor Ensign Mirabel
Mirabel’s creativity and clumsiness would not endear her. She probably forgets to use proper titles, tries to customize the starfleet uniform, omits extra safety protocols when nothing dangerous happens for the hundredth time in a row... I don’t think she’d be very good at any of the typical fleet duties that the ship community needs- engineer, navigation, planet exploration, science/tech. I think she’d end up assisting various family members, cycling from department to department, catastrophe after catastrophe.
The rest of the ship community love her. She's approachable and kind, in a way that usually gets trained out during starfleet academy. The ship's children can ask her things that Abuela refuses to discuss. The older adults silently rely on her to do so. She'd be wonderful at teaching, creating, and making the ship a happier place, if Abuela would let her. But they all know she’s not cut out for the bridge. They think it's a pity that Abuela is still holding her to the same competitive standards of the rest of the family.
AWOL Bruno
I don’t think Bruno would fit in either, but his ability to “forecast” would be useful. As long as he produced enough of those, Abuela would let him stay in his quarters and watch from afar. The community would know his transmissions more than him. In fact, everyone in the ship would feel dread when they see one of those green colored messages on their PADD, because it means something terrible will happen to them soon.
Younger members of the community would wonder if ‘Bruno’ is some kind of cute acronym for an artificial intelligence, since he seems to know everything and yet no one’s seen him. Their thought is this: if he wasn't an artificial intelligence, wouldn't he be conspicuously breaking protocol by not showing up ever? B.R.U.N.O. - Bayesian Robotic Unit for Negative Omens. But no, he's just a rule breaker who is useful enough to get away with it. I think he’d also break Abuela’s "radio silence" rules and have a secret, very thin transmission open to all the media being produced around the galaxy, space telenovela.
CASITA: USS Encanto has detected anomalies in the starbase
When Casita starts breaking down, the stakes are life and death for the community! It would be like the Star Trek Computer having airlock glitches in the middle of uninhabitable space. Both Mirabel and Bruno violate Abuela's rules, and so they take the blame for this danger. The rules were in place to keep them safe, after all.
But it's not clear if Mirabel and Bruno's rule-breaking was the cause of the glitches. And it's also not clear if the ship still needs to continue its relentless push into uncharted space, after all they haven't been communicating with anyone outside. I think Bruno and Mirabel would need to break Abuela's rules to discover a new path forward for the family. Maybe they'll meet a peaceful civilization. Maybe they'll land somewhere for the first time and call it home.
As for how they get together
I love a romance set on a space ship. Maybe Mirabel, the unfavorite, consistently gets the dreaded 4am-8am watch. These times are the loneliest. It's too early for morning people and and too late for the night people. She entertains herself with music and stories, probably against protocol. Perhaps Bruno would surreptitiously listen in, again probably against protocol.
Or maybe something more direct? Mirabel has finally exhausted all the jobs that are fit for a member of the Madrigal family. In a last ditch effort, Abuela assigns Mirabel to be Bruno's assistant. This is awkward for multiple reasons: Bruno has never needed an assistant, and some people on board hardly believe he exists. I imagine the optics aren't improved when Mirabel spends her first shift standing in front of the door to Bruno's quarters, until she finally prevails upon him to let her in.
After they meet, I think I can stop writing. Of course they fall in love :)
...
Anyway, maybe there is some dialogue to be had with the Vorkosigan Saga. I just hope someday someone does Brumira in space.

some fluffy mindless brumira headcanons because that’s what I felt like writing
Even though Bruno can sew well enough, he goes straight to Mirabel whenever he gets a tear or hole in any of his clothing. Plus, he can’t stitch in his name or little hearts like she can.
With crafts and clothing on the brain, Mirabel often uses him as a living mannequin for her crocheting. This totally isn’t an excuse for her to be alone with him for hours at a time.
Mirabel is usually the one to initiate physical affection, and she can’t help but love how flustered it makes Bruno every single time. Whether she brushes her hand against his or kisses his cheek, it leaves him a stuttering, awkward mess. She thinks it’s adorable.
When Bruno DOES initiate touch, it’s either incredibly endearing and somewhat hesitant, or he unintentionally does something to make Mirabel’s face feel like it’s on fire. No in-betweens.
They have a bad habit of staying up way too late together. Late enough for the rats to go to bed. Late enough for EVERYTHING to seem hilarious, leading to giggle fits lasting until they feel like they’re going to throw up.
They can talk about anything for hours together. Brainstorming telenovelas, their unique experiences as black sheep of the family, weird dreams, whatever comes to mind. “It’s so nice to hear your voice,” they think.
Long, late night chats generally end with them snuggled up together and falling asleep.
Bruno can’t bring himself to lean against or lie on her like she does to him. “I’m going to crush you.” He barely weighs as much as her.

The promise of every romance is that the happy ending is earned […] so in a way love stories are fundamentally about hope.

Mirabel wakes in a world of dazzling lights and cold people, amid towers that climb impossibly high in the air… a fantastical place called "the Bronx,” in the year of our lord 2023.
Some things about this place are all too familiar: Abuela’s celestial expectations for the Family Madrigal, the lack of room in the constellation for dimmer stars. Others, like her and Bruno’s permanent banishment are unthinkable. And just what happened between them, that magic would intervene?
Mirabel must literally walk a mile in her other self’s shoes to untangle the story of the family’s estrangement- or she might never see her own family again.
Chapter 1/3. New chapters as soon as I finish editing.
