Doing their BID-ding
Community leaders are advocating for a business improvement district that would have the South 9th Street Italian Market as its hub.
By Joseph Myers
In 2016, a proposal to create a business improvement district (BID) for the South 9th Street Italian Market failed to acquire the mandatory two-thirds vote to move forward.  A renewed effort to establish the “South Philly Market Improvement District” has supportive community leaders hoping that sufficient advocacy will help advance a project eight years in the making. You can hear more about the plans at this evening’s Passyunk Square Civic Association general meeting.
Passyunk Square Civic president Sarah Anton considers the market “a gem.” But, she stresses, “There’s still plenty of work to be done. The whole corridor…including areas just beyond it, deserve intensive attention.”
The proposed BID would stretch from Eighth to 10th streets and from Federal to Fitzwater streets. Parts of Washington Avenue and Christian Street would also be included. Under the plan, commercial properties in this area would pay an additional property assessment. BIDs receive taxing authority from the State and must garner approval from City Council. The proposed operating expenses for the service area total $281,636.
If approved, those revenues would help the BID tackle boarded-up and graffiti-covered spaces, fences, vacant storefronts, and old or damaged vendor stands. Area residents would benefit from the BID’s greening and beautification efforts, lighting and infrastructure work, safety  improvements, and litter removal. The BID would serve as a complement to the one established on East Passyunk Avenue in 2002.
Anton explained that the BID’s management team, outreach staff, and legal/professional services would help improve the entire service area: “Commercial landlords could attract and retain more clients, businesses could have improved prospects for success, and residents and visitors could be a more integral part of the community.”
Eugene Desyatnik, president of the Bella Vista Neighbors Association (BVNA), cautions that the proposed BID may not meet with universal approval. “When businesses hear that they can receive help, yet will  need to contribute to that via assessments, it’s not unusual for them to wonder if anything is really wrong with staying on the present course.”
The BVNA hosted a meeting on October 22, in conjunction with the South Philly Market District organizers. That meeting served as a kickstarter to secure the votes needed in City Council, specifically 1st District Councilman Mark Squilla, to advance the plan.
The BIDs’ proponents feel confident the organization, if approved, will help keep the Market competitive with other area commercial enterprises and attract new tenants and visitors. “Along with valuing the past,” Desyatnik said, “we have to make apparent what we can do to improve the present and the future” of the market.
Anton concluded, “I’m eager to keep pushing for this BID. Simply put, the community needs and deserves it.”
Read the proposal details here.

Johnsson Has 1St-Period Hat Trick, Maple Leafs Rout Flyers
Follow CBSPHILLY Facebook  | Twitter
TORONTO (AP) – Andreas Johnsson had a hat trick midway through the first period and the Toronto Maple Leafs routed the Philadelphia Flyers 6-0 on Saturday night.
John Tavares, Patrick Marleau and Josh Leivo also scored, and backup goalie Garret Sparks made 35 saves for his first shutout of the season and the second of his career. Mitch Marner added two assists.
Neither team was assessed a penalty for the second consecutive game at Scotiabank Arena. The NHL’s last penalty-free game before this week came in March 2017.
Calvin Pickard, who was claimed by the Flyers on waivers from Toronto before the start of the season, allowed four goals on six shots for Philadelphia (10-11-2) before being pulled. Anthony Stolarz allowed two goals on 34 shots in relief.
Coming off back-to-back road losses, including a 4-2 decision at Columbus on Friday night, the Leafs built a 4-0 lead after just 12:20 thanks in large part to the first hat trick of Johnsson’s career.
The speedy winger got things going at 4:45 when he faked a slap shot off the rush before sliding the puck between Pickard’s pads for his third goal of the season. Johnsson made it 2-0 just 1:34 later when he blocked a point shot from defenseman Christian Folin and raced in alone and beat Pickard through the five-hole for a second time.
Marleau got in on the action at 7:44 when he fired his fifth into an open net off a scramble after a poor Philadelphia clearing attempt. A teammate of Pickard’s with the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League last season, Johnsson completed his hat trick – the 24-year-old had just four goals in 27 career NHL games before Saturday – on another shot between the pads from in tight after stealing the puck from a Flyers defender.
That ended the night for Pickard, who was coming off a 31-save shutout in Philadelphia’s 4-0 victory over the New York Rangers on Friday afternoon that snapped the Flyers’ four-game skid (0-3-1).
NOTES: Flyers winger James van Riemsdyk returned to face the Leafs for the first time. He played six seasons in blue and white before signing a five-year, $35 million contract with Philadelphia on July 1. He was honored with a first-period video tribute. … Johnsson is the eighth Leafs player to score a first-period hat trick and the first since Wendel Clark on Oct. 11, 1986.

Did Police Pursue the Right Guy Up I-95? They're Not Sure
The man that police identified as the primary suspect in, and as justification for, carrying out a two-state pursuit that left a child seriously hurt and several cops hospitalized may not have been in the car authorities were chasing.
Uncertainty about the occupants of a black Acura that caused chaos along Interstate 95 came a day after police followed the sedan nearly 30 miles from Wilmington, Delaware, to South Philadelphia. In its wake were two crashes and a huge manhunt.
Wilmington Police Chief Robert Tracy said Thursday that his department can't be certain Dejuan Robinson — the man identified as the suspect in Wednesday's chase — was ever involved.
"Whether he was in the car, I cannot confirm because we did not apprehend him," Tracy said at a news conference highlighting Wilmington's reduction in crime during 2018.
Tracy said his officers had "intelligence" that Robinson, who is a person of interest in several Delaware homicides, was in the luxury sedan they pulled over at 12th and Northeast streets shortly after 11 a.m. Wednesday. The driver sped off prompting police to follow.
"I can't tell you if [officers] could tell through tinted windows how many people were in the vehicle," Tracy said.
"We don't know if it was him or someone just as dangerous."
The chase upended a Philadelphia neighborhood and shut down a busy stretch of Interstate 95.
Boy, 3, Critically Hurt in Two-State Chase from Del. to PA
Tumblr media
After speeding up the highway and crossing into Pennsylvania, the Acura, with Wilmington officers and Pennsylvania state troopers in tow, clipped a car near Philadelphia International Airport causing a chain reaction crash. A Wilmington police cruiser flipped over. Five officers were injured. A 3-year-old boy in the clipped car suffered a fractured skull, his mother said Thursday.
The suspects escaped the crash unscathed and continued driving to the Broad Street exit, police believe. They drove a couple more blocks before crashing into the side of a SEPTA bus at Broad Street and Oregon Avenue in South Philadelphia. Two men bailed from the car after the crash, according to witnesses, and ran down nearby side streets. Philadelphia police then carried out a manhunt — searching streets and alleys with long guns and scouring dumpsters and parking garages around Methodist Hospital.
After hours of searching, police never found the men.
Robinson is currently on probation for weapons violations. A scan of his Facebook page on Wednesday showed no posts from that day. The profile was taken down a short time later. He's also evaded police before. In 2015, he escaped Wilmington police's custody.
Two other men were captured at a different point in the chase, Tracy said. They are still being questioned and have not been charged.
Tracy defended police's choice to pursue the car, but added that he wants to review the decision-making process and policies covering pursuits.
"Someone that just led us on a high-speed chase, caused crashes on I-95, crashed into a bus and then even witnesses said that [they] were jumping out of the vehicle as it was hitting the bus, this is a desperate individual," Tracy said.
"I'm not sitting here excusing this, but I have to go back and review what happened."

Dez Bryant calls Carson Wentz 'something serious'
Plenty of finger-pointing to go around following the Eagles’ 26-23 overtime loss to the Titans in Tennessee (see Roob's observations). The fact is that they blew this one, with much of the blame falling on two groups.
Quarterback
Carson Wentz: 33/50, 348 YDS, 2 TD, 99.4 RAT
The numbers would look even better were it not for six dropped passes. Yet Wentz also completed just one of five attempts on the Eagles’ final two trips in the red zone, both drives ending with a field goal. A touchdown on either possession wins the game.
Grade: B-
Running backs
Jay Ajayi: 15 ATT, 70 YDS
Tough running from Ajayi with a broken back and Wendell Smallwood with five carries for 39 yards. The Eagles missed Darren Sproles and Corey Clement in the passing game, though. Ajayi and Smallwood had six for only 26 yards, plus there were issues in protection.
Grade: B-
Wide receivers/tight ends
Alshon Jeffery: 8 REC, 105 YDS, 1 TD
Jeffery caught almost everything thrown his way. The same cannot be said for Nelson Agholor, who reverted back to 2016 form with three drops. Zach Ertz led Eagles receivers with 11 receptions for 112 yards, and Jordan Matthews hauled in a 56-yard touchdown — but each had a key drop as well.
Grade: C+
Offensive line
Eagles backs averaged 5.5 yards per carry. The issues were in protection. Wentz was sacked four times and hit 11 total. They had trouble handling the blitz up front, and they were plain getting beat. One particularly terrible sequence by Lane Johnson culminated with a strip sack resulting in a turnover.
Grade: C
Defensive line
Derek Barnett: 3 TKL, 1 TFL, 2 QBH, 1.0 SK
Barnett, Michael Bennett and Haloti Ngata were credited with sacks, yet the pass rush failed to get home more often than not, registering six hits total on the quarterback. The unit finished with almost as many tackles for loss — five — while limiting Titans ball carriers to a paltry 2.0 yards per carry.
Grade: C-
Linebackers
Jordan Hicks: 7 TKL, 1 TFL
When the quarterback eluded the rush and broke contain, Eagles linebackers were chasing. Ten scrambles went for 46 yards and a touchdown. Hicks and Nigel Bradham combined for 12 tackles, but impactful plays were few and far between.
Grade: C-
Defensive backs
Malcolm Jenkins: 7 TKL, 2 TFL, 1 PD
Jenkins tried to win the game singlehandedly, but his Herculean effort in the fourth quarter and overtime was overshadowed by the failings around him. Jalen Mills was burned repeatedly. Ronald Darby’s tackling was piss poor. And allowing an easy conversion on 4th-and-15 with the game on the line is inexcusable for this or any secondary.
Grade: F
Special teams
Jake Elliott: 3/3 FG, 2/2 XP
Some signs of life, as DeAndre Carter’s 42-yard punt return gave the Eagles a shot to tie the game in regulation. But Cameron Johnston was too strong, with three of his six punts going for touchbacks.
Grade: C
Coaching
Eagles’ record: 2-2
Heavy run-pass imbalance? Check. Baffling management in two-minute situations? Check. When did Andy Reid come back? Questionable game plan by Doug Pederson, exacerbated by questionable situational football. And Jim Schwartz can’t let pass after pass sail over Mills’ head without any adjustment whatsoever.
Grade: D

What $900 rents in Philly right now
Welcome to Curbed Comparisons, where we explore what you can rent or buy for a certain dollar amount in various Philly neighborhoods. This week, we’re checking out homes at or around $900 per month. While most rentals in the city hit about $1,000 north of that price point, there are still a ton of great options for $900, from University City, to Germantown.
University City (2 bed, 1 bath)—This sleek and sunny apartment is pretty centrally located on the northern section of University City. It has hardwood floors, a bay window, a full kitchen, and—bonus—you can bring your cats and small dogs.
Wynnefield Heights (2 bed, 1 bath)—On the edge of Fairmount Park, just a minutes’ drive from Bala Cynwyd, this apartment is on the second floor of a duplex, and offers 900 square feet of space, as well as a small balcony. It’s a recently renovated spot, so it has that brand-new feel.
West Passyunk (2 bed, 1 bath)—This West Passyunk spot marks the first two-story home on this list. The first floor has a wide open white-and-grey living space that continues into a kitchen, all with plenty of windows. Bedrooms sit upstairs, and there’s a yard out back, but sadly you can’t bring your pets.
Germantown (1 bed, 1 bath)—This funky, top-floor apartment offers a fair amount of space for its price point, with a large living room, and a separate kitchen and bedroom. Apart from the space, the design might be a pull for some Philly residents. The ceilings are slanted, and the doorways arched, making for some unique details throughout the space.
Belfield (2 bed, 1 bath)—Just a few minutes from the Germantown apartment, is this bright Belfield spot, which was recently renovated, with a new kitchen and bedrooms, offering 800 square feet of space. The floors are laminated, but the appliances are all new.

Look Inside the Very Pink Blume, a New Cocktail Bar in Rittenhouse
Is that a new bar at 1500 Locust Street or did a Lisa Frank factory move in? The pink and turquoise Blume opens this week in what was most recently beer and cider bar Cinder Copper & Lace. Owner Teddy Sourias, who also has Tradesman’s, Bru Craft & Wurst, and U-Bahn, originally set out to give Cinder a refresh, but wound up going in a very, very different direction.
Blume is all bright colors and flowers, with a butterfly design covering the front doors, floral wallpaper, more than 200 plants hanging down from the ceiling, and 2,300 roses popping off the walls. Anne White, who designed Sourias’ glitzy Christmas pop-up bar Tinsel, came up with the look at Blume — she says she was going for “modernized Victorian.”
There are about 100 seats, counting the bar, lounge, and dining area. Sidewalk seating will be added later this spring.
Unlike at his other ventures, which highlight beer or whiskey, Sourias is focusing on what he’s describing as “light, fun, and fruity” cocktails at Blume, like the Femme Fatale with tequila, Solerno Blood Orange, hibiscus tea, and lime, and the En Blume with vodka, St-Germain, Pavan liqueur, lemon, and pineapple. There will also be a list of natural wines, along with plenty of beer available as drafts and in cans and bottles.
To eat, chef Aila DeVowe, formerly of Noord and the now-closed Bar Ferdinand, is keeping the pizzas and flatbreads from Cinder and adding an eclectic mix of dishes, with several vegetarian and vegan options. Look for gnocchi with cauliflower, pine nuts, and celery root, kung pao calamari, and baked oysters.
Blume opens Thursday, April 25. To start, the hours are Monday to Thursday from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. and Friday to Sunday from noon to 2 a.m.

Historic Odette's restaurant moved to make way for boutique hotel in New Hope
Developers and conservationists said they made the rare decision to relocate the structure, instead of knocking it down, in order to preserve the borough's history. Built in 1784 as a stone inn and tavern, the establishment served as a Bucks County landmark, first as the River House and then as Odette's, until it was shuttered in the late 2000s.

Don’t Ask Permission
“Jawn” can mean anything here in Philly. Just ask your young neighbors—it’s that jawn, or this jawn or the other jawn. But on Saturday, just blocks away from Independence Hall, dozens of youth from around the city gathered at “The Jawn” to rally about the most important jawn they need to talk about: voting.
At #VoteThatJawn at WHYY’s Public Commons, young leaders from all four corners of the city—student organizers from Temple and Penn, representatives from Girls Inc., and others—gathered to figure out ways to get their peers to the polls. Author Lorene Cary’s Safe Kids Stories, along with The Citizen and several other partners, kicked off a six-week sprint to register and get to the polls as many 18-year-olds as possible for the November election. Formed into teams, the students developed plans for spreading the word to their classmates and other young Philadelphians, with $1,000 prizes to the team that brings the most voters to the polls, the team that shows the most creativity, and “the team with the most grit.”
At round tables, the teams began brainstorming ideas from creating catchy slogans, organizing mock votes and carpooling to get as many of their peers registered and voting in November. One group plans to hold a rally with a panel of elected officials; another created a poster with the slogan “Don’t Ask Permission. Just Vote That Jawn;” one woman in the crowd suggested taking their grandmothers out for ice cream…and stopping at the polls on the way. Three young Philadelphians—Dré Reed, Rachel Headlam and José Rosero—created an animated video to show how-to-register, and rappers Ma’tthue Raheem and MG, created a VoteThatJawn song to energize the crowd.
Tumblr media
Despite all of the energy, the movement has an uphill battle. The upcoming elections are preceded by a disturbing fact: the amount of youth voters in the city has been traditionally low. Roughly 33,000 18-to-34-year-olds voted in the 2015 mayoral election, which was only 10 percent of the overall turnout. That’s much lower than their share of the Philly population (between 25 and 30 percent).
There is a silver lining: The millennial vote this past May had the highest growth in turnout since 2013 suggesting that there is some momentum to bring the numbers where they need to be. And Pennsylvania is reported to have the highest number of new registrations among young people in the country.
The event included rousing talks from Mayor Jim Kenney; Lisa Deely, current Chair of the City Commissioners; David Brown, a writer and professor at Temple; and Lansie Silvia, the project director of Next Stop: Democracy!, an initiative funded by the Knight Foundation to make polling places more accessible.
Lansie Sylvia talks strategies with Vote that Jawn attendees
The teams will present the results of their campaigns a few days after the November election. Let’s hope this Jawn proves what the kids in the room on Saturday seemed to show: Young people embracing democracy.

Philadelphia International Airport On List Of Top-10 Airports To Avoid During Holidays
Follow CBSPHILLY Facebook  | Twitter
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — ‘Tis the season for good tidings and traveling to see loved ones. With that in mind, a travel insurance company has named Philadelphia International Airport one of the top ten airports nationwide to avoid during the holidays.
The most notable reasons are that Philadelphia International Airport has a poor on-time performance record and a reputation for flight cancellations, according to InsureMyTrip.com.
Of the list of 10 airports from along the coast, PHL lands at number five.
It is sandwiched between Greater Rochester International (#4) and Newark Liberty International (#6).
The list is comprised of airports largely based along the East Coast and the travel company offers plenty of helpful tips.
Some of those include:
Book flights with earlier departures as flights after 4 p.m. are more likely to be canceled or delayed.
Book direct flights as connecting flights allow for more potential of something going wrong.
Have a backup plan just in case something does avert your flight plans.

Arcade, bowling among newest attractions at planned Philly Fashion District
The long-anticipated Center City Fashion District will see even more entertainment options than originally planned, including arcade games, bowling, karaoke, and billiards.
Round One, a Japanese company that calls itself, “an amusement store chain,” is bringing the new attractions to the project, which is expected to wrap up this year, according to an announcement last week from Macerich and PREIT the developers behind the project.
The entertainment group will join AMC Theaters on the third floor of the Fashion District, occupying 60,000 square feet of space, which the district is dubbing an “entertainment zone.” Along with games, attractions, and movies, the space will have food and drinks.
“Round 1 will create the ultimate entertainment experience for socializing with friends, family entertainment, parties and corporate events,” the district said in the announcement.
It’s the latest in a long journey for the Fashion District project, which is set to open this fall at the site of the former Gallery shopping mall on Market Street in Center City. Construction started in 2016, and a year later, developers announced that they planned to make the project a retail, entertainment, and food destination. A grand opening was scheduled for November of 2018, and it seemed on track, with 80 percent of its space leased out, but Macerich and PREIT announced that they needed more time. They pointed to the, “large-scale, complex nature,” of the project as a reason for pushing it back, and announced a new opening date this September.

In Fishtown, renovated home with some original Victorian features asks $700K
On the northern edge of Fishtown, a 100-year-old home is offering two styles, combined: a sleek, contemporary home, as well as some original, early 20th-century touches.
The four-bed, three-bath space on 1525 Montgomery Avenue, which just came on the market for $699,000, has a lot of draws in its 3,000 square feet of space. First, there’s the fact that it’s fully renovated, with 11-foot ceilings, hardwood floors, and industrial/contemporary light fixtures.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are a lot of original details to the space as well, which give it that early-1900s feel, like the marble (now decorative) fireplace in the living room, which sits under an ornate, carved wood mirror. Upstairs, a master bedroom features an impressive, original dresser, with carved wood details.
The home last sold for $625,000 in 2018, and a listing at the time shows the stark difference thanks to the recent renovation. Gone is the carpeting and the former kitchen; and several details throughout the space have been touched up.

Carson Wentz: Struggles vs. Saints 'Definitely Frustrating'
Butch Dill/Associated Press
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz understandably shined a spotlight on his own poor play following Sunday's 48-7 loss to the New Orleans Saints.
"It was definitely frustrating, but at the end of the day, we're going to get out of here, we're going to watch this film, and we're going to go play a couple of NFC East opponents here and see what we're made of," Wentz told reporters.
The Saints held Wentz to 156 yards passing and picked him off three times. He had only three interceptions all season (seven games) coming into Week 11. It was his first three-interception game since December 2016.
"I've played a lot of football games in my career, ever since I was a kid, and this one of the worst losses I've ever been a part of," Wentz said.
The Eagles' 41-point loss was the worst ever for a defending Super Bowl champion. New Orleans dominated from start to finish, posting 546 yards in its ninth straight win. Philadelphia managed just 196 yards and dropped to 4-6, putting the team two games behind Washington for first place in the NFC East.
"It blows my mind too, trust me," Saints defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins told reporters. "That just speaks volumes not only to the type of talent we have on this team but how locked in everybody is. I think everybody knows how special we can be, and everyone knows the end goal. If everybody here isn't thinking Super Bowl, then they're in the wrong locker room."
Frustration boiled over for Eagles players in the fourth quarter, when the Saints went for it on fourth down while ahead 31 points. Philadelphia safety Malcolm Jenkins flipped off Saints coach Sean Payton after being beaten over the top by Alvin Kamara for a 37-yard touchdown.
The Eagles are in danger of becoming the fifth Super Bowl winner in the last decade to fail to reach the playoffs in the next season.

The Linc - Jalen Mills says “I think we finna go win the Super Bowl. It’s time again.”
Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links ...
JALEN MILLS: “Just got a big pickup in DeSean Jackson, for the offense. We’ve got a big, big defensive tackle in Malik [Jackson.] I think we finna go win the Super Bowl, man. It’s time again. It’s time. We healthy, we going to do it again. [...] [Carson] Wentz is looking good. He’s back healthy, moving around good, Wentz is going to air that ball up. He’s the leader of our team and everybody know that it’s time to win.”
Eagles cap space update heading into the second week of NFL free agency - BGN Now that 2019 NFL free agency is unofficially one week old, let’s take a look at how much cap space the Philadelphia Eagles have left after making some moves last week. A lot of people saw the following tweet on Sunday night and asked: “How do the Eagles possibly have this much cap space left?”
The Kist & Solak Show #86: The Electric Kool-Aid Running Back Test - BGN Radio Michael Kist and Benjamin Solak assess the current state of the running back room for the Eagles, discuss the value of the position, and what the plan could be to bolster the group. PLUS potential targets in the 1st round AND an update on all the draft prospects being brought in for official visits! Powered by SB Nation and Bleeding Green Nation.
Eagles Add a Safety - Iggles Blitz This move makes a lot of sense, in some respects. Sendejo is a natural FS. When McLeod got hurt last year, the Eagles didn’t have anyone who was an ideal fit for that role. Sendejo could step in and start if needed. He has started 58 games in his career and has been part of some great defenses. You can see Sendejo’s ability in these clips. He has good range and ball skills. He can be a big hitter.
Andrew Sendejo adds experience, confidence at safety - PE.com It didn’t look like much at the time, when safety Rodney McLeod went down with an injury in a Week 3 win over the Indianapolis Colts last season. He came off the field, the game continued, all eyes focused on the 2018 debut of quarterback Carson Wentz. Turns out, McLeod’s injury was serious enough to sideline him for the remainder of the year and force the Eagles into a week-to-week exercise of mixing and matching and coming up with answers to replace McLeod. The injury to McLeod, the first of many suffered in the secondary, stretched the defensive backfield to its limit throughout the remainder of the year. So, it’s no surprise that finding depth for the safety position was one of the team’s early priorities in free agency, and the Eagles solved that need by agreeing to terms on Monday with veteran Andrew Sendejo, entering his 10th NFL season, eight of them with the Minnesota Vikings.
Eagles, Patriots poised to lead the way in 2020 compensatory picks - PFT The Eagles are likely to get a third-round compensatory pick for losing Nick Foles, and two fourth-rounders for losing Golden Tate and Jordan Hicks. The Patriots are expected to get third-round picks for Trey Flowers and Trent Brown, plus a sixth-round pick for Malcom Brown.
State of every NFL team after free agency - PFF Key Players Added: WR DeSean Jackson (79.4), EDGE Brandon Graham (88.7), T Jason Peters (69.6), CB Ronald Darby (70.6), DI Malik Jackson (64.4), LB L.J. Fort (74.2) — Key Players Lost: EDGE Michael Bennett (75.1), G Steven Wisniewski (54.6), LB Jordan Hicks (76.1), WR Golden Tate (71.1), WR Jordan Matthews (65.4), QB Nick Foles (76.6), DI Timmy Jernigan (49.8).
With few options at RB, Eagles might have to get creative - NBCSP There are some borderline lead backs on the market, granted in short supply. Were the Eagles to pair the likes of Isaiah Crowell, C.J. Anderson or Spencer Ware with a promising rookie, such a tandem might not electrify the fan base, but it would create some semblance of stability at the position. The Eagles could even re-sign Jay Ajayi, provided he’ll be healthy. Were it not for a torn ACL, Ajayi probably would’ve been one of the top runners on the market, even with a chronic knee issue. Free agent T.J. Yeldon and Browns running back Duke Johnson have also been mentioned as possibilities, but more as potential replacements for Darren Sproles.
For Temple’s Ryquell Armstead, ‘the small details are what really matters’ with Eagles’ Duce Staley watching - PennLive Assistant head coach and running backs coach Duce Staley paced Armstead and teammates Rob Ritrovato and Nick Sharga through their individual workouts. “It was great,” Armstead said afterward at Temple’s STAR Complex. “He’s a great coach. I love what he was saying to me. The small details are what really matters, and I try to focus on that. All in all, I believe I had a good day. I feel like he liked me. It was great working out with the Eagles.” Armstead knows the team’s recent history with young running backs. Two years ago, the Eagles signed Corey Clement as an undrafted free agent out of Wisconsin. Clement grew up in Glassboro, N.J., and he went on to catch four passes for 100 yards and a touchdown in the Super Bowl LII win. Armstead said his Millville High team scrimmaged against Clement’s Glassboro High squad before the two found success in college.
NFL Free Agency: Andrew Sendejo (and his arms) to sign with Philadelphia Eagles - Daily Norseman Sendejo was a solid safety for most of his time with the Vikings after picking up the starting spot. He’s, essentially, getting a “prove it” deal to see if he can pick up where he left off after missing most of this year. This is another loss for the Vikings, but it’s one that appears that theyll be able to absorb with little to no problem.
2019 NFL Draft: The Jaguars need to go overboard to fix the quarterback position - Big Cat Country Could Nick Foles be the guy? Sure. Heck, you can even argue that he already holds that mantle in Philadelphia. The Jaguars certainly think so by making him the most handsomely paid free agent quarterback this cycle, and his experience in high-pressure situations and influence in the locker room makes the move an extremely logical one for a regime under duress to provide immediate results in 2019. I do not fault the Jaguars for bringing Foles in. I will fault them, however, if they don’t hedge their bets and put all their eggs in a quarterback basket that doesn’t have more than 11 starts in a season as a starter.
How does the Nick Foles signing affect the division? - Stampede Blue Overall, I think this is a terrible move for the Jaguars. They could have easily drafted up to get one of the 2 stud QBs in this class or gone for next years loaded one (like the Dolphins). However, they paid the 7th highest annual salary for an average to below-average quarterback who plays well in the playoffs. Bad move for Jaguars fans, a good move for Colts fans.
Dave Gettleman: Giants got “legitimate value” in return for Odell Beckham Jr. - Big Blue View At the Combine a few weeks ago, Gettleman took issue with the negative narrative about quarterback Eli Manning. He did so again on Monday. This narrative that Eli is overpaid and can’t play is a crock. I’m telling you!,” Gettleman said. The GM says he is “OK” if you disagree with him about Manning, and added that with the way the Giants played at the end of last season and the salary Manning currently makes “there really wasn’t a decision to make.” Gettleman also said the Giants had considered extending or restructuring the veteran quarterback’s deal, but that they will just “keep moving.”
Free agent defensive lineman Vinny Curry visiting Bengals on Monday - Cincy Jungle The Bengals have awoken from their early free agency slumber. Aside from re-signing their fourth internal free agent in Tyler Eifert this weekend, they are also hosting a veteran edge defender. Per Geoff Mosher of 973 ESPN Radio, Vinny Curry is set to visit Cincinnati at the onset of next week. Curry was most recently with the Buccaneers and was released in February.
Los Angeles Rams to sign QB Blake Bortles to one-year deal - Turf Show Times Per the official team site, the Los Angeles Rams are signing former Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles to a one-year deal to back up starting QB Jared Goff. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
A complete history of Vontaze Burfict being the most reckless football player - SB Nation Linebacker Vontaze Burfict is exactly what every NFL team wanted from a middle linebacker about 40 or 50 years ago. Players like Dick Butkus and Jack Lambert had reputations as mean and scary enforcers who didn’t just make tackles, but attempted to set the tone for anybody who dared to go to the middle of the field. Highlight reels showed clothesline tackles, helmet-to-helmet hits, and boasted about the rough and tough linebackers of lore. But the best linebackers of football today are those who can channel the aggression and violence of the game without crossing the line. That’s something that Burfict has struggled with.
