Chapter 1 - Motive

A weapon of murder has been placed in every room. Resting within everyone’s dumbwaiter is a single, sharp knife, with the room number inlaid clearly in the handle in gold. Belrose has promised these knives as totally complimentary, meaning they’ll provide a quick and easy way for you to make your payment of blood, scot-free! However, the identifying number on each handle might prove a curious variable for avoiding the dissent of your fellow guests. Plus, there’s only one per room — you’ll have to learn to share.

The message is clear, but the choice is all yours.

Chapter 1 - Killing Game Reveal

Though the clocks on the walls tick, telling time is quite difficult. You have no sense of where you are, when you are, or what you have to do. But, perhaps you manage to sleep. And this lasts as long as the morning - you are woken up (or perhaps merely startled) by the shrill ringing of your bedside rotary.

At…7:00 AM, no less. Did everyone back then wake up so early?

"Bright and beautiful morning, esteemed guests! It's a lovely day today. I've received word from Management concerning your stay, so please come down to the lobby as soon as you can make yourselves presentable. Thank you very much!"

°||° Lobby

Frumpy. You all are so frumpy. Whether lucky enough to have nailed a luxury suite, or forced into economical status like some sort of poor person, it's hard to imagine anything but restless sleep here. Thankfully, you don't plan on spending another night.

... Right?

From the door behind the front desk emerges the man of the hour — Belrose looks as chipper as ever. Not a hair out of place, not a bounce missing from his step.

"Good morning! Oh, good morning, everyone! I trust that the accommodations were to your tastes?"

His exuberance is very warm. Or grating, depending on your mood. After some hesitant (and perhaps forcefully polite) answers, Belrose's smile widens, as though all he's heard is praise.

"That's wonderful. Golly, nothing makes me happier to know!"

"Oh, but, yes. Right! As to what I've called you here for," he rummages around in his pocket, "I don't mean to hold you all from your morning buffet, but I do promise it's important. I sent word to Management last night about your…er, predicament, as per your request, and, oh, you wouldn't believe!"

Finally finding what it seems he seeks, Belrose tugs free a letter with a flourish. It is stamped in the middle by an illustrious golden seal with the detail of a rose. "That's right — I received this letter, just a couple hours ago! It usually takes some time to hear back. You must be important folks!"

What does it say? "Oh, yes! Let's find out!"

Reaching his hand into his pocket once more, Belrose pulls out an antiquated letter opener. It is golden and gleaming, much like everything else in this hotel. The handle, too, is detailed with a rose.

Without further delay, he drags the small knife through the side of the letter in a quick, sharp slit. He is impossibly neat, and apparently (with the use of the opener) careful not to break the wax seal.

Once opened, he slips the opener back into his pocket and tugs free the letter inside. It is a simple sheet of paper. Vacant, green eyes narrow with new focus as he reads over the contents.

And he… pauses. His eyebrows raise, just a little.

"… Oh."

This is not a comforting sight or sound. After some confusion, he quickly speaks again.

"Well…yes, of course, I'll read it out for you all!" Despite a moment of obvious surprise, Belrose's tone doesn't miss a beat. "Ahem-hem."

"Dear…Belrose," the pause notably fabricated by Belrose himself,

"Thank you for reaching out with such great haste. Accommodations aside, this new group of guests demands your utmost priority and attention. Their stay here is very special, as they are here for…" Another pause. "…business."

Belrose shoots you all a wan sort of smile. This seems to mean something to him, but he continues to read aloud nonetheless.

"Worry not for your position, as there are instructions for you to follow closely. From this day onward, I'll be…"

"…Oh, that's personal, sorry. Shouldn't say."

"…demands retribution. They have been booked indefinitely, until any one of them decides to check out. For this, inform them of the price. They are guests at the finest establishment ever known to New York City; they should know that a refusal wouldn't sit well with our family, or any others."

Belrose fails to mention this price, eyes skipping to the next sentence.

"Encourage them as you can. If nothing strikes you now, that is fine. We know you follow orders best, so check in soon with the other staff and send up our complimentary gifts."

"And a closing remark of farewell." Belrose frowns a little. "This will be a lot to prepare before the anniversary."

"I apologize, on behalf of the hotel, for any delays or setbacks to your daily lives." Belrose looks genuinely mournful of this. It's an inconvenience to everyone.

As a guest steps forward to receive the letter, Belrose looks up, a little surprised. "Oh! Oh, no, I'm very sorry. This was a letter directed to myself, from Management. Not for guests to have." He folds it crisply. "I can answer any questions you might have about it, though!"

"The price?"

"The price?"

"The price?"

"Are we certain we'd like to hear the price?"

"…"

"Not so swell at all! I am very glad that we…"

There is such an overwhelming push of confusion and demand, not even Belrose, in his happy state, can ignore it.

"… The price… is not… er," Belrose steels himself. "It's not in cash, folks! The price, as detailed today by Management…" Belrose clears his throat. "Is a…permanent check-out."

He glances to the side, a little bashful. An action too casual for such an announcement. "Gosh, I mean, we take in a lot of guests. E-Especially so close to the anniversary gala! If you'd like to leave now, it seems you'll have to free up somebody else's spot, too."

Gloved hands knit themselves together.

"…Take care of a fellow guest's exit, and you'll have grounds to leave. Retribution in blood."

Prologue End

°||° Several hours have passed...

And the gala is still in full-swing. People dance, people drink, people eat, people chat, people have a lovely evening. Whether you've spent this time enjoying the festivities or sequestering yourself to the sidelines, your presence is demanded here, so here you will stay.

Eventually, the brassy, bold notes of the big band die down once again. A microphone is tapped, and all eyes return to a corner of the room. There, Mr. Belrose stands, just as before, yet looking significantly more comfortable. The hints of a smile wear at the corners of his eyes and mouth. Evidently, even stuffy businessmen are no match for the jubilance!

"Hello, hello. Ahem. I trust that everyone has enjoyed their night so far?"

There are cheers, and Mr. Belrose looks very pleased. Maybe people don't cheer enthusiastically for boring guys like him very much.

"Right. Well, that's great to hear. You can see that your investments have gone all the right places." Pause for laughs(?) that may or may not follow. "In any case, the Foundation would like to thank everyone for their patronage and attendance tonight. I know that if my great-grandmother, Delilah Belrose herself, were here with us today, she'd be over the moon to see her beloved hotel lit back up and..."

And so on. Mr. Belrose prattles on about this and that, naming specific investors and backing companies in thanks. Fairly standard, and fairly snooze-inducing, but it seems that everyone's too excited about their gala-goings to care very much.

He takes a few steps to one side, walking as he talks. He makes a few more in-jokes that tickle the bellies of Mr. Richman and Mrs. Moneybags, and not many others. He briefly congratulates the catering and waitstaff, as is cordial. And he rounds his speech with a profound, heartfelt thanks to the guests. Hey…that's you!

"Whether as recipients of direct invites, or lucky raffle-winners, the Foundation is truly grateful to have you here. Without your presence and support, the Belrose's re-opening could not have gotten off to such a great start." There is real pride in his voice. "Finally, after years and years, the hotel sees its light returned. I propose a toast."

Seeing glasses raised, both by the guests and by other patrons, Mr. Belrose is most pleased. He lifts his own glass higher (though not dramatically so, of course), and smiles. "To the Belrose! To the family. To a century of luxury, and a century more. To—"

Most suddenly, two sounds: a loud SNAP, and a sharp, whooshing whistle breathes throughout the event hall. Not a whistle of song, but a whistle…of rope.

There is no time to even blink, it feels.

Even louder still,

A THUD.

What should follow is the loudest of all. Glass shattering, flames catching, a thousand startled shrieks and horrified screams. In your eyes, the chandelier falls impossibly — too quick to be stopped, yet somehow sinking through airs of molasses.

However, what then meets your ears is not terrible, nor so high-pitched. All you can hear, before you even have the chance to scream yourself, is a single, rattling, swooping, gasping, cacophonous, ear-splitting breath.

As Mr. Belrose breathes his last, something else breathes anew.

The breath is loud. The breath fills your mind. It is louder even than your own breathing, your own beating, pounding heart, and it makes you feel very cold all over. The tips of your fingertips and toes tingle, then become numb.

The breath gasps, but not quite like a newborn; the breath is finally reaching the surface.

Then, your eyes blink. The world is pitch black for what seems like an eternity, even though a blink is but a split-second of your time.

And you find…that the event hall is completely empty. Save yourselves, that is.

°||° After fleeing to the lobby...

At first glance, the lobby is, similarly to the hall, completely empty. There isn’t even anyone at the front desk. This doesn’t seem at all possible.

But you notice something peculiar... Not that this whole situation isn’t overwhelmingly peculiar, but something stands out to you in the corner of your eye. There is no panic button, there is no staff in sight, there is no help available…

Yet…mightn't there still be a way to call?

As you reach out to the bell and press down on the button, it rings very loud. Clear as day, you have rung for assistance.

And, for a long moment, nothing happens. You feel like a desperate, desperate fool.

That is, until... Behind the door behind the desk marked STAFF ONLY, you hear a shuffle. A muffled voice shouts, “Oh, one moment!”

...What?

Steps sound. The handle of the door turns. You try to inform the disembodied voice of what has happened in the adjacent room just moments ago…

"An emergency?" the voice exclaims, pushing through the door. "Oh, dear!"

Standing before you is, indeed, a man. A young man, certainly not past his twenties, with familiar blonde hair and green eyes. He is dressed in a rather outdated bellhop's uniform, from the tassels on his shoulders to the hat upon his head. His face is rosy, his smile is wide, and you've never seen him before in your life.

The bellhop surveys the panicked room, the urging, frightened people, and his polite smile does not drop.

Prologue Start

°||° New York City, New York, U.S.A...

Autumn. The sun begins to set, and crows haunt the painted skies. There is always much hustle and bustle across New York City, someplace acclaimed for its nightlife, but tonight is a night of particular import.

Tonight, The Belrose Hotel reopens.

A celebratory gala is to be thrown for hotel guests and interested members of the elite. While some hundreds will be in attendance, only a select few have been granted the opportunity for an extended stay; nineteen lucky guests will call the Belrose home for two weeks.

Your plane tickets, your luggage, your living arrangements, everything has been taken care of ahead of time by the Belrose Foundation. Tomorrow, you’re expected to wake up bright and early for tours and events, but tonight, the only thing that matters is music and dancing. Live large! Live grand! Live like those before you once lived, the old guests of the old society.

°||° Now, however, just a half-hour prior to the start...

For your safety (and to keep a proper head-count), you’ve been herded into different limousines for your arrival.

You can feel as your limousines pull themselves to a stop. Though the windows are one-way, meaning the outside can't see in, the inside certainly can see out, and it is crowded. But, you've been warned. You hear the chauffeur dismount, then watch as the limousine doors slide open.

What greets you is...

Music. Dancing. Talking. Eating. The gala is dazzling, rich, and seems bathed in a golden light. Celebrities of ranging fame litter the room, as well as heads of charities, boards, and businesses.

Just before you’re released into the hall, however, a member of staff whispers quietly in your ear: “Mr. Belrose will be speaking soon.”

°||° And, as the too-full room gets fuller...

Someone clears their throat into a microphone.

“Good evening, everyone.”

From across the grand hall, a man’s voice is heard, loud and clear. The music quiets to make way for his words. If you are not close enough to see the sternness in his expression, you can hear it in his voice. This is Mr. Henry Belrose, owner of the Belrose Estate and head of its Foundation. He is the great-grandson of the original founder of the hotel, the esteemed Delilah Belrose, and carries with him all of the grandiose of said status.

“I hope tonight finds you all well. The Foundation has put plenty of work into renovating the Belrose as a modern establishment, while still maintaining its antiquated charms. There could be no parallel to its splendor back in its heyday, and we aim that there will be no parallel today.”

He pauses.

“As you all may be aware, this hotel has been both a blessing and a bane upon my family’s name. It has brought us great fortune, yet no one can deny the tragedy of such a respectable enterprise sinking to rumour and gossip. I am beyond pleased to announce that, in this modern age, we claim no ties to such nonsense. The Belrose Hotel reopens today as a glimpse to the past keeping in mind the future.”

A member of staff offers him a tray with a glass on it. He accepts the glass without hesitation.

“All that being said, I’ll delay the gala no longer. Enjoy your night.”

Roster Time + Spectator Form

Hello everyone! With four days left until roster drop and almost all of our cast art completed, we've dropped in to make a couple more announcements! The first being a reminder that our spectator form is still open! We'll link it at the end of this announcement for convenience, but if you are interested in a slot as a potential spectator, please fill this out! Additionally, feel free to forward it to your friends if they'd be interested in it as well! Please note that we will not be considering anyone for a spectator unless they have filled out this form, whether an accepted cast member knows them or not! This is, of course, for both comfort and convenience purposes. If you're unsure if you've filled it out or not, then feel free to submit a second response! We'll filter out any duplicates :]

Secondly, we have decided on a concrete roster drop time! The roster will be dropping August 28, 2023 8:00 PM EST! We apologize for the late time, but we discussed and decided it would be best considering the mods' own schedules + the general reception from the server we saw regarding school starting on/around this date. If you can't make it, then no worries! The roster drop will be posted here on the tumblr to be viewed at any time, and there will be no pressure on our chosen cast to accept the server invites immediately after roster drop. We're leaving plenty of time to let things process.

Roster Drop Date

Hi, guys! As you're all well aware, progress has been slow, but steady! Behind-the-scenes setbacks have been tough, but we're finally at a place where we feel confident announcing a roster drop date. Before that, however, a few ground rules/things to note:

After the drop, YouTube/Tumblr comments as well as asks will be temporarily disabled. Similarly, we will not be sharing the names of any muns with our drop.

All of these are precautions to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our cast and our mod team. We've seen the backlash that past games have received from just roster drops; it's not a fun time for anyone involved. In the end, this is just a Discord roleplay, and we don't want real people being hurt. We ask that everyone practice kindness and respect, whether you are accepted into the cast or not. You all worked super hard on your characters and apps, and that kind of effort can't be diminished, regardless of your acceptance!

All this being said, we've got a date! We'll figure out a specific time once we get a little closer to our drop date. For now: Monday, August 28th is the day! It'll be released as a video here our Tumblr page and on YouTube, with the cast itself listed underneath.

Cast Chosen

Hello, everyone! This is the announcement you've all been waiting for, so I won't delay things any further: Our cast has been chosen! After a couple months of careful reading, preparing and hashing things out, we've finally decided on a cast of 19 lucky guests for this game.

It was incredibly hard to choose between so many amazing applicants, and ultimately, our main priority was cast balance. We're confident in our chosen cast, but we want to recognize that it really was a struggle to pick! There were so many fun personalities, occupations and stories that we just couldn't fit, but appreciated nonetheless. Thank you guys so much for your patience and hard work in applying to this game. It's been a whirlwind already, but so very exciting!

We don't have a specific date yet as to the roster drop, but we're hoping for early to mid August at the most. Accounting for other busy things (shoutout, Artfight!), we'd like your patience for just a little while longer to get everything put together nicely.

Once the date is decided, it will be announced, and we'll drop a link to our spectator forms. Our roster drop will take place in the form of a video, which we will post here on the tumblr when the day comes.

All in all, we're over the moon to be putting on this game for you, but moreso for your support throughout it all. If there are any further questions or concerns, be sure to shoot them our way! Thank you guys so much for everything. And, as always, enjoy your stay!

Power Role Announcement

Hello, everyone! Mod team has been making steady progress, and we're nearly done reading every app in full/slowly piecing together a cast. Thank you so much for your patience thus far, and be sure that good things are soon to come! That being said, we finally have an update! Power roles have been chosen! While we have not collectively finished app-reading, several mods have, and all have read a majority. In the interest of moving things along quicker, we got together, narrowed down our options and came to an absolute consensus today. Our power role selection was a smaller, more condensed group which we had each gone over in detail, so we felt good to go! Therein: Hell Hotel's power roles have been contacted and accepted their spots, which we couldn't be happier about. (If you applied for a power role but were not contacted, don't fret! Your character is still being considered for the main cast. We just figured it would be in good faith to give a heads-up!) Thank you guys for everything! We know things have been coming along slow, but we're so excited for what's up next. Have a good day/night!

Hello, everyone! Thank you all for your patience on further news. Mod team has been hard at work catching up with and organizing all of our planning, and we're now in a spot to make this announcement.

We received a total of 87 applications, which is absolutely incredible, but also very daunting! The amount of interest and support you've all shown us has been amazing, and we're honestly overwhelmed. But happy! Very, very happy! From the bottom of our hearts, thank you all so much.

Once we've decided the cast, we'll make an announcement with information about a cast drop, spectators, and more. If you have any further questions and concerns, don’t hesitate to send an ask!

Hi, all! It is now past midnight, which means the grace period is officially over. All extension apps are now due. If you have any last minute changes, submissions or adjustments, please send them to a mod ASAP! Two things:

Guest list updates may be slow. Please be patient as mods are working their hardest to wrangle everyone's apps and organize things! We've received so many applicants, it's overwhelming. But a good overwhelming!

More announcements to come after this massive wave tonight - mod team has a lot to catch up on! Please be patient with us as we wade through what comes next, but be sure to stay tuned.

Overall, we are so grateful for the amount of support we've received over the whole apping period. Everyone's interest in this game has really been amazing, and we're so impressed by everyone's abilities and incredible work! Everyone should be proud of their efforts. You're all awesome!

One Day Remaining (Extensions)

Good morning! Or day, or afternoon, or night, wherever you are! Today is the extension due date. All extension applicants must have their apps in, pronto!

Just like last deadline, there will be a grace period extending into midnight, tomorrow. There’s been some confusion as to how that works, so we’ll just state it clearly: you can submit up until midnight tomorrow (PST)! Today is just the due date officially; the grace period is meant for last minute changes and emergencies. If your app is not in by today, you can have it in by tomorrow. However, please don’t absolutely rush yourself! Keep your health and happiness above all.

If there are any last minute questions or concerns, please feel free to send an ask on the tumblr. Also, more info on roster tracking/spectators/etcetera will be released after tomorrow, once the grace period is over and everyone’s apps are in. Otherwise, good luck, everybody! Cheering you all on!!!

One Day Remaining

Hi, all! It is April 30th, which marks a very special day: today is the general due date. For those who do not have extensions, your app is due tonight. Before that, however, there are a couple things of note. If you would still like to grab an extension (found in ⁠the discord hopeful’s server, which is linked on the tumblr), you have until midnight tonight to do so. After that, the reaction role message will be deleted, and no more extensions will be granted. Keep this in mind!

Also, there will be a 24 hour grace period extended after midnight to May 1st. This grace period is in place to keep people from rushing super hard, and allow for any last minute changes or adjustments. It will end at midnight tomorrow. After that, apps without an extension will not be accepted.

Once the extension due date has passed (not the general one!), we’ll put up an app tracker in the hopeful’s server to let you all know the mod team’s app reading and cast selection progress. Also, the guest list may not be updated for a bit if there is a sudden influx of apps, so please be patient! If your hopeful isn’t listed/you don’t have your roles within two days, send us a message and we’ll have you sorted, no problem.

You guys have been working so hard, and it’s been super awesome getting to see the fruits of that labor. Thank you all for making this journey so much fun!

One Week Remaining

Hello, everyone! This is your one week reminder for the general deadline due date, or two weeks with an extension. Grab one in the Discord Hopeful’s Server if you haven’t already! As mentioned previously, there will be a 24 hour grace period after the official due date ends that will allow for any last minute changes or submissions. So, technically, the general due date is more May 1st, midnight PST. And, indeed, the extension pushes that day back by a whole extra week. Please be mindful of your capabilities, and don’t push yourself to the limit last minute! I’m a massive procrastinator myself, but a rushed app is always tough to pull off. Take your time! All in all, we’re so excited to see what you guys have cooked up. If anyone has any questions/concerns, feel free to send an ask on the Tumblr or in the hopeful’s server.
