The Sun Knows Its Going Down
Tumblr media
Sunset over the Keppel Bay. Photo credit: Jonathan Chua.
This was taken against the setting sun and the original capture was somewhat hazy and drab. Reds and yellows were then tweaked in post to fix that.

The Busiest Station
Tumblr media
Liverpool Street Station clocking over 80 million entries/exits a year to become Britain’s busiest station last year. Photo credit: Sarah Chua.
This image was converted from the DNG raw and cropped a little in post so that things won’t look too small.

It’s No Bronzeback
Tumblr media
One of three striped keelbacks finding themselves somehow marooned in the middle of a basin at the foot of a water cuscading feature in the Gardens by the Bay. Photo credit: Jonathan Chua.
Onsite, I had mistakenly thought that they were Common Bronzebacks but realized only when the images were viewed back home on the computer that these were not really as slender. They were eventually found to be Striped Keelbacks.

A Plume Of Violet-Blue
Tumblr media
A Tillandsia cyanea ‘Pink Quill’ giving off a plume of flowers before giving way to offsets or “pups” to continue the family line. Photo credit: Jonathan Chua.
This was taken just after a misting session and cropped in closer so that the water droplets might be more conspicuous.

In Two Minds
Tumblr media
A blue peafowl half wondering if it should open its train for the photographer. Photo credit: Jonathan Chua.
Camera was held low and the screen was used to get the shot. There was a little motion blur on the head of the peacock visible at actual size but, thankfully, things seemed fine at this size.

Newly Discovered, Critically Endangered
Tumblr media
Critically endangered Begonia cabanillasii blooming here in the Cloud Forest. Photo credit: Jonathan Chua.
Discovered only in 2017 in Palawan and described in 2020, this was a surprising find in the Cloud Forest here.
This was captured against a shady backdrop with the exposure biased 2 stops darker.

Tolling Vine
Tumblr media
Cathedral Bell Vine blooming once again in the Cloud Forest. Photo credit: Eleanor Chua.
These were hanging low along the side railings of the Treetop Walk and had to be taken with the help of the articulated screen on the camera.
Another visitor had to go very low with her cellphone. Apparently, the selfie camera has less resolution than the back camera in most cellphones and I supposed that she had wanted the best quality available.

Blooming Good Time
Tumblr media
Azalea in full bloom in the conservatory. Photo credit: Jonathan Chua.
This was a manually focussed capture as autofocus of the adapted kit wasn’t very consistent. Manual focussing with the camera though was quite pleasant. Focus peaking and the 5.76-million dot electronic viewfinder were both very helpful tools.

Beside Running Waters
Tumblr media
A Purple Heron preening itself in the Kingfisher Wetlands just before the sky opens up. Photo credit: Jonathan Chua.
To capture the smooth flow of waters, the ISO was extended down to 50 to get a slow 0.3-second shutter. It also helped that the sky had happened to be darkening with an approaching thunderstorm.

Shouting For Joy

After the first time that it had shouted, it was then just a matter of pre-focussing and waiting for the moment.

Wild Daisies
Tumblr media
A Tawny Coster keeping Tridax Daisies company in the wild. Photo credit: Jonathan Chua.
Tridax procumbens or Tridax Daisies are treated as widespread weeds here and would regularly be mown away. These temporarily surviving ones were a treat for the butterflies especially the Tawny Coster.
