Shop Local!
Cal Herbold's Nursery is about 3 miles from my home. I have purchased quite few products from them like decorative rocks, a couple of boulders, trees, and plants. Here are a few pictures of my recent visit. The Red Yucca and the Kadota Fig do well in the high desert and they are easy to grow in our hot and dry climate. Enj♥y!

Before I post this allow me to share with you Gardening In The Desert. This is a collaboration between two very enthusiastic gardeners, sweating through summers and smiling through winters as they play in the desert dirt of Phoenix, Arizona.
Ayshica and Jessica share their experiences- the blood, sweat and tears, the victories, and failures, the tips and tricks and everything in between on their gardening adventure. https://www.gardeninginthedesert.com/

Expand Your Knowledge
A well-known saying declares, “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.” While many forms of unethical imitation can lead to serious consequences, there is nothing wrong with adopting the practices of some master gardeners and other high desert residents when you’re trying to learn new tricks to implement your garden vision. Here are a few resources to get those creative juices flowing.
The Mojave Water Agency’s list of demonstration gardens https://www.mojavewater.org/conservation/mwa-demonstration-garden/
This website maintains a list of demonstration gardens throughout the high desert area, showcasing sustainable growing techniques, the use of native plants, and tips on water conservation and maintenance.
One of the more unexpected and obscure items on this list came from the city of Adelanto, CA. Perhaps unfortunately most well-known for its ICE detention center and private prison, the city also claims two demonstration gardens. The city hall location also has an accompanying virtual tour on Youtube.
City of Adelanto – City Hall 11600 Air Expressway Adelanto, CA 92301A

Another place to get great ideas is through master gardening courses or content online or through your local university extension. Typical course coverage consists of setting up a garden, soil, water, and chemical considerations, composting, propagation, pest control, and more. Even if you don’t sign up for a course, there is plenty to learn, and the answer to almost every question is out there, if you just take time to look.
If your interest is piqued, visit the Gardening Know How blog’s page at:
To find out more about ways to expand your knowledge, you can visit The American Horticultural Society
Growing anything, from a plant in your garden to your knowledge about sustainable practices in harsh climates, is a process that demands time and effort. The reward is in the journey as much as the final product itself. Keep growing; keep learning, and remember, I’ll be here to cheer you on every step of the way.

A water feature in your garden ♥♥♥
Plants, tress, and shrubs are essential to any garden, but have you consider adding a pond? A pond can add scenic beauty to your property along with financial benefit. Pond Doctor is the best pond builder in California. They construct and maintain koi ponds and waterfalls. Koi fish are rich with symbolic significance especially in Japanese and Chinese culture and history. They represent a symbol of strength, perseverance, love, and bravery, and dedication.
I invite you to check out their website to learn more about their products and services at https://ponddoctor.org/

Local Nurseries
Many people have regular pastimes that they indulge. One of mine is visiting plant nurseries. Nursery visits can give you new ideas for your garden space, help you find creative solutions to pressing problems, and give you an opportunity to recharge in nature. Here are a few stops I suggest if you are in the local area.
Ponderosa Nursery
4544 Summit Valley Road, Hesperia, CA 92345
(760) 927-0050
This location is on my soon-to-visit list. The business is known for its commitment to preserving endangered trees and plants. The selection includes a wide variety of mesquite, acacia, and other native trees.
Herbold’s California Nursery and Affordable Decorative Rock
9403 E Avenue, Hesperia, CA 92345
(760) 244-6125
Herbold’s has been in the high desert for several decades. This independently-owned establishment offers a huge variety of plants, trees and shrubs. If your garden vision includes decorative rock or sod, Herbold’s is happy to oblige, and you will probably come away with a few things you weren’t expecting.
Hanna’s Nursery and Feed
15942 Bear Valley Road
Victorville, CA 92395
(760) 956-3900
In addition to desert plants, Hanna’s sells animal feed and firewood too.
Sometimes it might be tempting to dismiss nurseries because of their high prices and relative unfamiliarity. However, nurseries may offer healthier plants. Knowledgeable staff can help you with particular inquiries related to your garden vision or particular needs. Also, a good nursery can serve as a repository of native plants. Part of the value of nurseries comes from the potential to save endangered plants, trees, and shrubs.
Why not take a trip to your local nursery and see what inspiration you find?
