But along with the boys we slowly realized that the aircrew are going down and getting erased, like going extinct, but so much worse because if their names aren’t remembered it’s like they never existed.

MEEEEE TOOOO. it really just hits different, it's such a unique dynamic for them and i'm so excited to write it because it's gonna be such a switch up from how i usually write them and also my first swing at a modern au/non–canon fic ooo boy

gale looks like he'd be scary and intimidating and closed–off, and he definitely can be in certain circumstances, but not with john, never with him. it probably takes a while for john to break down his walls, whatever reasons he might have them up, but who can say no to that sweet boy? gale is so protective and probably hates how soft john makes him at first, but they fall into each other's lives and make a home in each other's hearts before they realize it's happening.

john has so much love to give and hasn't had many positive male figures in his life, a la daddy issues, probably has gotten involved with men a little too similar to his dad, raised voices and mean fists and alcohol, because he'll lean into whoever gives him attention and affection. but gale is different, gale's gentle with him, knows what john needs before john himself even knows he needs it, never raises his voice or pushes or is anything other than sweet and soft with him.

This isn't even a headcanon at this point, because it pretty much happens in the show.

When John is informed that Gale has been shot down , he's devastated. And rightfully so, that's his best friend.

But am I the only one who's stuck on the fact that he immediately agreed with bombing German civilians? Like, he was 100% ok with killing innocent civilians after Gale's "death".

They literally had to say, dude, chill, the people you wanna bomb didn't kill Buck, and that seems to clear his mind a little.

Like, that man was ready to risk it all.

So, I HC that once they're both reunited in the Stalag, John starts to get his thoughts in check and realises how messed up his mind was when he thought Gale was dead.

As the months pass , and they remain Prisoners of War, John's thoughts get darker and darker. And Gale starts to notice. Every time he asks him about it, John brushes him off.

Then comes the day when Gale asks how he's doing and John says he's fine, and then he starts to vent on how he can't stand it here, and how he wishes he wasn't there and how he's a terrible person, and that's when Gale stops him.

Because in Gale's eyes, John is perfect. He is kind and loyal and an amazing human being. And most of all, he's just a good person.

And that makes John snap. He spills everything out. He tells him about how he's been feeling the last few months trapped in here.

How he reacted to his supposed death. How he didn't seem to care at the thought of killing innocent people.

How, even after seeing his buck alive and well, he still has dark thoughts. How they keep getting darker and darker the longer they stay here.

He's terrified of the man he's becoming. He can barely recognise himself. He's spiraling and-

And Gale hugs him. He pulls him in close and tucks John's head into his shoulder. He strokes his hair and tells him that everything is going to be alright.

And John breaks down. All his pent up emotions are out in the open. He cries into Gale's shoulder. He grips tightly onto him. Shaking as Gale whispers gentle words of encouragement into his ear.

Everything will be alright, they're together. And no matter what happens. They'll get through it.

John believes him.

And for the first time in months, John believes him. A positive thought enters his mind, a happy thought.

I HC that when meeting them, people assume Gale is more protective over John, he's always silently sitting next to him, watching and analysing everything and everyone around them.

He doesn't seem to join in on the fun, dancing, drinking or playing games. He just hangs next to a happy John enjoying himself. Like a little protective bodyguard.

John seems almost unapproachable, you can hardly get a moment alone with the guy without Gale being stuck to his side. So naturally, people assume it's because Gale is both protective and possessive of his best friend.

That is until someone tries to separate them.

John's on the dance floor drinking and singing, having a good time with his friends. Gale isn't too far away, watching them from the bar, he likes seeing John happy.

That's when he's approached by a couple of drunk soldiers. They seem friendly enough, so Gale doesn't say anything. Maybe they get a little too close and comfortable for Gale's liking.

He doesn't do well with people he doesn't know, especially when they're drunk. They make him uncomfortable.

Maybe they say or do something he doesn't like so he tries to leave, but there's two of them and they block him from leaving.

Curt probably sees this and rushes over to separate them before John can see. Things escalate and the soldiers put their hands on Gale intentionally or unintentionally.

John is on them before anything else can happen. He goes absolutely feral. Curt and a few others have to drag him off of the drunk soldiers.

No one's allowed to touch or make his Buck uncomfortable.

That night, everyone realises that John is just as protective if not more of Gale than they thought.
