The Mummy 25th anniversary re-release
This is the weekend of anniversary re-releases. Not only is Alien (1979) in theatres; so is The Mummy. This is the film that turned Universal Pictures’ horror icon into an action movie franchise more akin to Raiders of the Lost Ark than the 1932 film starring Boris Karloff as Im-Ho-Tep. It was a huge success, leading to a couple sequels and Van Helsing. Even the later, aborted Universal Dark…

Film Review: Abigail's got bite
Abigail is an entertaining hybrid of horror and heist movie, even if the gene-splicing sometimes goes awry. If ever a film deserved a spoiler-free review, Abigail is it; unfortunately, that ship was blasted to bloody oblivion by a trailer that reveals the big surprise. Consequently, we will be discussing details you might want to avoid if you are lucky enough to have not seen the advertising…

Film Review: Late Night with the Devil
Late Night with the Devil answers the question: What would happen if Larry Sanders sold his soul for better ratings? Late Night with the Devil cleverly exploits the horror genre’s ability to take a metaphor and treat it literally. We all know that TV celebrities figuratively sell their souls for higher ratings, so what would happen if one of them actually did? The film’s answer to that question…

Haunting the Queen Mary
We snapped this pic last Halloween at the Queen Mary’s Shaqtoberfest. It’s a nice angle, but because of the lighting the image did not look good, so we spent some time fiddling with the color, contrast, adding the watercolor effect, etc. Ended up not using it but we happened to run across it today while looking for something else. So we thought: Why not put it out there?

Trailer: The Crow (2024)
Remaking/rebooting/reimagining The Crow did not seem like a great idea, considering how good the 1994 film was and how disappointing the sequels were. And yet this trailer has us optimistic. Bill Skarsgård stars as Eric Draven, supported by FKA twigs and Danny Huston. Lionsgate releases the film on June 7.

Trailer: Abigail
Radio Silence – a.k.a., Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who gave us the wonderful Ready or Not – direct this horror film about a vampire-ballerina (dig the excerpt of “Swan Lake” heard in the trailer – a call back to the opening title music for 1931’s Dracula). The story has some kidnappers snatch the titular child and stash her in a spooky old house, but you can bet they won’t live to…

Trailer: Sting
No, it’s not a bio-pic of former Police-frontman Gordon Sumner; it’s a creepy horror film about a young girl’s pet spider that goes on a deadly rampage. Our guess is the spider is mad about being named “Sting” when spiders actually bite. Well Go USA Entertainment releases the film on April 12.
