           there was an ambiguity behind their statement. a double meaning. one, being the more literal sense of the word — a rather painful experience no matter the species. getting a limb removed often is. or two, being the symbolism behind one losing their freedom. neither would be good to have happen. however, the issue ( & reasonable explanation behind his own hesitation to respond ) revolved around the fact that the demon made a valid argument. still, regardless of everything, aziraphale simply chose to keep a more optimistic view. “ perhaps … there is often a lesson to be learned in it all. but when that is ought to be up to the individual. ”

           there is a palpable grin resurfacing on his lips once again, noticing the failed attempt to hide the new color that warmed the demon’s face. cute had been the first word that popped in the angel’s head. although he chose to keep that little information to himself in fear that he’d never get the chance to see it again. the personal world which they've carved out & nurtured for themselves had been just that — theirs. so when crowley asked if he could stay the night? of course there was to be no hesitation on his part. “ i would’ve thought you’d pick anything over having to spend more time babysitting. ” sarcasm slipped into his response before nodding, “ you don’t have to ask. mi casa es su casa. ” as far as aziraphale knew — why crowley still had the flat was beyond him, when what felt like a majority of the time was spent with each other. but who would the angel be to bring that up?

another sip of the cocoa before the mess on the desk captures his undivided attention. aziraphale made quick work to organize everything into a few different piles. “ any news from your side? ” the question is spoken without a second thought. an attempt to make conversation ( without any recollection of the implications it could hold. ) his gaze moves to meet that of his companion again.

' mumbled without any real CONVICTION to speak of. one observing close enough might just spy the twitch at the corner of otherwise pursed lips. how easily they fell to their teasing these days ; affectionate little jabs and the accompanying smiles, head dipped to hide the rosy dusting of heat at his cheeks ( from the wine, just the wine ). comfortable silence settled over them ... COZY, if they would allow the word to pierce their vocabulary. ' d'you mind if i, er could i stay tonight? ' emboldened, perhaps, by the fact that night was fading fast toward dawn. another handful of hours at best. ' new neighbour ... been hammering like mad, 's driving me up the wall. ' THE ADDENDUM COMES TOO FAST, tongue stumbling over it in a rush.

           spectacles sat atop the angel’s nose, focused on the news articles sprawled out over the oak wood desk. his attention is only stolen away for a moment when the mug of cocoa is brought into view. “ mhn … ” comes the gentle hum of thanks, reaching for the warm cup. aziraphale brings it to his face, taking a small whiff of the sweet chocolate & letting out a breath of content as a result.

“ i’ve seemed to hit a dead end with this one. ” the disappointment sat heavy in the angel’s chest, touching the mug to his lips & taking a sip. he’d hardly noticed how mundane everything felt — with his best friend leisurely laying out on the sofa. it was simply familiar. blue hues finally meet the others, a brief roll of his eyes contradicting the warm smile that settles on his lips. “ thank you by the way, ” he opts to say. “ you don’t have to help me with him, but you are. i really do appreciate it. ”
