The combination of 'unnervingly flawless self-control' with 'occasional tendency to engage in reckless, dangerous, and borderline self-destructive or death-seeking behaviour' in a character is SUCH catnip to me

Roommate
Dear Diary,
Today was… hard. To be honest, everyday is hard, but today went ahead and surprised me, which is really rare, like, really really rare. You know very well how bland my reaction to the swarm of two-meters-long wasps was.
After today, I do wish the issue would be as simple as a swarm of little alien insects, but I got a worse pest instead.
[Hey!]
I could go on rambling and rambling about how used to unknown and otherworldly issues I am, but I would be, well, rambling, and you don’t like rambling do you?
[Helyo, this is literally your diary.]
You have the right to ramble to your own diary, it’s yours.
“Then why are you writing in it? Go away, shoo.”
[Don’t be like that-]
“Let me fuck move my own hand, you damn thing!”
As I was saying, diary, at the moment I seem to be infected with a mind controlling parasite, I will explain more after having breakfast. See ya.
With love, Helyo.
[PS: Hello, Helyo’s diary! We’ll talk a lot in the future]
“Leave my diary the fuck alone!”
[It’s our diary now.]
“It fuck isn’t.”

gasping for breath always hits different. chest heaving from panic or strain, coughing and struggling to draw in the air they so desperately need, swallowing and forcing words between wheezes that leave them dizzy and swaying but they can't afford to pass out yet? it could be from pain, fever, sweating, exhaustion, broken ribs, near drowning? it's a whole ass delicacy

Enough of the trope where memory loss undoes the damage or the corruption or whatever. More content where removing memories just removes the context.
The tragedy of needing to grieve and not knowing what or who you lost or why. The angst of having trauma and being denied the awareness that it's trauma. The suspense of being different somehow and left to wonder how and when. The tension of knowing that something is off and you can't find where it hurts. The Adventure Zone gets it. Kingdom Hearts gets it.
There is an aching inside you and you don't know how it got there.

When the unflappable character sees someone they care about in danger and the mask slips, it's great.
But when the unflappable character sees someone they care about in danger, and the mask DOESN'T slip.
Because they understand they need to be calm and unflappable now more than ever; if it protects them, it will certainly protect the person they care about. So their voice doesn't waver, their hands don't shake. They don't panic. From the outside looking in, they're as calm as could be. They handle it.
But after it's over-when the person they care about is safe, and the unflappable character is alone-they completely shatter. Gasping breaths, sobs, barely holding it together because someone they love almost DIED, and it was far, far too close for comfort.
(Optional: Character that they care about finds them in this state and comforts them.)

the happy sunshine whumpee having their past shown to their team, and it’s the most violent, brutal torture anyone has ever seen. “it was a long time ago” they try and say, “don’t worry, i barely even remember it” they try and soothe. but the recordings keep playing and playing, with every scream their eyes grow more and more distant, and the careful persona they’ve crafted slips away. by the time the recordings are finished, the team are eyeing them with worry, whumpee wont talk, and their eyes are clouded over. their knuckles turn white as they ball their fists, leaving the room before anyone can say a thing.

Content: Kidnapping.
Many years ago, Caretaker gifted a beloved piece of jewellery (necklace, bracelet, etc.) to whumpee. Whumpee has never taken it off since.
When Whumper - a “friend” of Caretaker - takes Whumpee, they steal the jewellery piece for themself, deciding that Whumpee does not deserve something so pretty.
Unfortunately, they forget to take it off when they next visit Caretaker, who immediately notices it and turns livid.
