Tumblr media
"Thrilling. Positively thrilling." —Kirkus Reviews
Nicolas “Nico” Hall is sixteen when he escapes from Dr. H’s religious gay reprogramming institute in California. On his own, he assumes one identity after another to avoid recapture as he flees south--first to Peru, then to Mexico. Seven days older than Nico, Samuel “Sam” Jonas Solomon is a privileged Upper West Side only child who idolizes James Bond. When his heart is broken, he vows that, like Bond, he’s never going to trust in love again. Then he meets Nico, and his heart won’t listen to any logic. Nico’s survived by living only for himself—until his love for Sam has him risking his freedom for others. And as much as Sam wants to be like 007, he discovers that James Bond is a terrible role model. Together, Nico and Sam set out to free the other teens trapped in Dr. H’s Institute, plunging readers into perils, drama, and a long-shot chance at love. To succeed, they’ll both have to be A Different Kind of Brave.

Finished NanoWriMo? Congratulations! You may be thinking about submitting that manuscript soon, and we have some advice in the event you’re thinking about sending your work to Interlude Press and Duet Books.
First, thanks for thinking of us! The fact that authors —both established and aspiring—consider Interlude as a possible home for their hard work means a lot to us. We receive many manuscripts in the weeks following National Novel Writing Month, and it can take a while to get through them all. But there are ways to help ensure that your work stands out no matter where you’re sending it.
Is it ready? This is a tough question, we know. You’ve poured yourself into writing your book, and you’ve probably gone over it a few times, too. Before you send it off for submission, consider getting extra eyes on your words from trusted readers or editors. While all books undergo editing after they’ve been accepted, you will help your chances in you turn in complete and polished work.
Is it a good match? Think about where you’re sending your manuscript. Have you studied the publisher or agent to make sure they work in your space? For example, Interlude and Duet exclusively feature stories from an LGBTQ+ perspective, but we still receive a surprising number of manuscripts from authors (and agents!) who don’t realize that. Take time to check out publishers’ catalogs and check out some of their books to make sure that you’ve found a good home for your work.
Have you checked for submissions policies? It may not be the most exciting thing you do, but read the publisher’s submissions policy (and follow it). At Interlude & Duet, we’re looking for queer adult and YA fiction of 60,000-to-90,000 words. We do not publish poetry or memoirs or picture books. There’s more, and you can find it at https://interludepress.com/open-submissions.
Finally, if you do send us a submission, please hang in there. Your work is important to us, but the submissions inbox gets pretty full this time of year, and it can take some time to work through it.

Can Willa keep her reputation afloat while taking a chance on love?
"This is a sweet story of two women learning who they are and finding love along the way. There are plenty of waves in the ocean to keep you turning pages and oodles of seaside charm. This is one of my favorites of the year so far."—The Lesbian Review

This past weekend marked the eighth anniversary of Interlude Press becoming real. After months of planning, our small business incorporated on January 1, 2014 and soon after, we announced our plans to publish novels from first-time authors making the jump from fanworks to professional publishing.
Some applauded us. Some didn’t. We saw more than a few comments forecasting our inevitable and immediate failure.
Eight years later, our books have received awards, starred reviews, and placement on annual “Best of the Year” lists. They’ve appeared on bestseller lists. They’ve been featured in The New York Times, NPR, and O Magazine. Authors have become reader favorites, and some have moved on to new stages. And ultimately, our books found a larger platform when we signed with a distributor that opened new doors for our books.
As Interlude grew, so did its benchmarks for success. And it became clear that to ensure the continued success of this company in an increasingly competitive market, we were going to need some help.
Other publishers recognized this, as well. We were approached by larger companies about possible acquisition. And one stood out from the others.
On January 1st, we welcomed Chicago Review Press as the new owner of Interlude Press and Duet Books.
In Chicago Review Press, we found not just a new owner, but a familiar space committed to the catalog, the mission, the authors, and the brand of Interlude Press and Duet Books. Its publisher has expressed a strong commitment to keeping the brand intact and assigning editorial leadership to members of the queer community.
We take this step with great excitement for the future of Interlude Press, its authors, and their books. Throughout our months-long process, it became clear that Interlude has found a home that is committed to its future and respectful of its history.
We couldn’t be more grateful for the authors, editors, readers, bloggers, reviewers and more whose support and hard work have helped shape Interlude Press into the publisher it has become.
The three of us— Managing Editor Annie Harper, Art Director C.B. Messer, and Marketing-Communications Director Candysse Miller—have treasured this incredible ride and are thankful for your support and belief in our mission of helping readers of LGBTQ+ fiction find the love, triumphs, friendships, family, adventures, and the uplifting endings they deserve.
